Inversion-symmetric topological insulators in cut-and-project binary chains

We investigate the electronic properties of binary tight-binding chains generated by the cut-and-project method for rational slopes $\alpha=p/q$, leading to periodic and inversion symmetric chains with $n=p+q$ sites. The binary structure is encoded in two hopping amplitudes $t_a$ and $t_b$. For fixed $t_a \neq t_b$, the support of the energy spectrum as a function of $p/n$ gives rise to a "Cut-and-Project butterfly". We concentrate on insulators with $M$ filled bands among a total of $n$ bands and vary $t_a/t_b$. Inversion symmetry constrains the electric polarization $P$ to $0$ or $P_q/2$ modulo a polarization quantum $P_q = \gcd(M,n)/n$. A topological transition, between two insulators that differ by their quantized polarization, occurs if and only if $n/\gcd(M,n)$ is odd. When $n/\gcd(M,n)$ is even, the two insulating regimes have a vanishing polarization and no topological transition occurs, despite the gap closing at $t_a=t_b$. When $n$ is even and $M$ odd, we find an adiabatic path between $t_a>t_b$ and $t_a<t_b$ that maintains inversion symmetry and a gap.

Topological Degeneracy Induced Flat Bands in two-Dimensional Holed Systems

Systems hosting flat bands offer a powerful platform for exploring strong correlation physics. Theoretically topological degeneracy rising in systems with non-trivial topological orders on periodic manifolds of non-zero genus can generate ideal flat bands. However, experimental realization of such geometrically engineered systems is very difficult. In this work, we demonstrate that flat planes with strategically patterned hole defects can engineer ideal flat bands. We constructing two families of models, singular flat band systems where degeneracy is stabilized by non-contractible loop excitations tied to hole defects and perfectly nested van Hove systems where degeneracy arises from line excitations in momentum space. These models circumvent the need for exotic manifolds while retaining the essential features of topological flat bands. By directly linking defect engineering to degeneracy mechanisms, our results establish a scalable framework for experimentally accessible flat band design.

Decoding flat bands from compact localized states

The flat band system is an ideal quantum platform to investigate the kaleidoscope created by the electron-electron correlation effects. The central ingredient of realizing a flat band is to find its compact localized states. In this work, we develop a systematic way to generate the compact localized states by designing destructive interference pattern from 1-dimensional chains. A variety of 2-dimensional new flat band systems are constructed with this method. Furthermore, we show that the method can be extended to generate the compact localized states in multi-orbital systems by carefully designing the block hopping scheme, as well as in quasicrystal and disorder systems.
