An emerging baryon cycle in a galaxy 500 million years after the Big Bang

The emergence of stellar feedback as a regulator of galaxy growth marks a fundamental transition in cosmic history. At early times, rapid gas accretion and collapse may induce intense star formation before feedback becomes effective, producing feedback-free starbursts. When and how such bursts subsequently develop into self-regulated baryon cycles remain observationally unknown. Here we show that Gz9p3, a merging galaxy at $z=9.311$, is caught in this transition only 500 million years after the Big Bang. Deep JWST spectroscopy reveals a substantial neutral-gas reservoir along its merger-driven tidal structure and a multiphase outflow. Fine-structure absorption provides the first direct measurement of the electron density of the cool outflowing gas at high redshift ($\approx\,17\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$), yielding a mass-loading factor among the highest yet measured for galaxies of comparable stellar mass. The emergence of such efficient feedback after an intense burst is consistent with the delayed onset of feedback expected in feedback-free starburst models. The cool outflowing gas is unlikely to escape the host halo, implying that much of this metal-enriched material may remain available for future recycling through the circumgalactic medium. Gz9p3 therefore provides an early view of a baryon cycle being established through the interplay of merger-driven gas redistribution, bursty star formation and stellar feedback, suggesting that feedback-regulated recycling was already shaping galaxy growth during the epoch of reionization.

Scaling Relations of Galactic Outflows Across Cosmic Time: New Insights from Cosmic Noon

Galactic outflows play a significant role in regulating galaxy evolution. Scaling relations between stellar mass ($M_\ast$), star formation (SFR), and outflow properties have been extensively studied at low redshifts ($z<1$) but less so beyond $z \sim 2$. We construct a joint sample of 387 galaxies from $z \sim$ 0-9, including 98 new Cosmic Noon galaxies from the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey and the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey. Using high signal-to-noise emission lines (SNR $>$ 50 for H$α$ or [OIII] $\lambda5007$) from Keck/MOSFIRE spectra, we detect warm-ionized outflows by decomposing lines into narrow and broad components. With the joint sample, we explore the redshift evolution of outflow scaling relations. On average, outflows at Cosmic Noon have higher maximum velocities than those at low$-z$ by up to a factor of 3 for a fixed $M_\ast$, SFR, or SFR surface density. They also have higher mass outflow rates for a fixed $M_\ast$. Despite faster and stronger outflows, there is no evolution in the mass loading factor for a fixed $M_\ast$. We find evidence for galactic fountains, as the majority of outflowing gas is recycled at a radius of $\sim$0.03 R$_\textrm{vir}$. We also constrain the overall outflow occurrence rate in our galaxy sample to be at least 30$\%$ when taking galaxy orientation and outflow geometry into account. By analyzing the largest sample of warm-ionized outflows at Cosmic Noon to date and compiling large galaxy samples across all redshifts, we present a comprehensive analysis of galactic outflows throughout cosmic time.

High-Density Horizontal Arrays of Single-Chirality Carbon Nanotubes

Highly ordered high-density arrays of single-chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are greatly desired for exploring the intrinsic anisotropic properties and collective performance of such 1-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials. Here we present a Marangoni flow-induced self-assembly (MISA) strategy to fabricate monolayered SWCNT arrays achieving a packing density of ~200 ${μm}^{-1}$ and a 2-dimensional order parameter ($S_{2\mathrm{D}}$) of ~0.95. Relying on its general compatibility with both organic and aqueous dispersions, we prepare single-chirality and enantiomer-pure SWCNT arrays from organic and aqueous dispersions resulting from the sorting processes. The anisotropic optical and electrical properties of the arrays are demonstrated by the polarization-dependent Rabi splitting as well as polarized near-infrared light emission and detection. With the great tolerance to solutions, substrates, and materials, as well as the feasibility and controllability, MISA shows great potential in the assembly of 1D nanomaterials.

TopGen: Learning Structural Layouts and Cross-Fields for Quadrilateral Mesh Generation

High-quality quadrilateral mesh generation is a fundamental challenge in computer graphics. Traditional optimization-based methods are often constrained by the topological quality of input meshes and suffer from severe efficiency bottlenecks, frequently becoming computationally prohibitive when handling high-resolution models. While emerging learning-based approaches offer greater flexibility, they primarily focus on cross-field prediction, often resulting in the loss of critical structural layouts and a lack of editability. In this paper, we propose TopGen, a robust and efficient learning-based framework that mimics professional manual modeling workflows by simultaneously predicting structural layouts and cross-fields. By processing input triangular meshes through point cloud sampling and a shape encoder, TopGen is inherently robust to non-manifold geometries and low-quality initial topologies. We introduce a dual-query decoder using edge-based and face-based sampling points as queries to perform structural line classification and cross-field regression in parallel. This integrated approach explicitly extracts the geometric skeleton while concurrently capturing orientation fields. Such synergy ensures the preservation of geometric integrity and provides an intuitive, editable foundation for subsequent quadrilateral remeshing. To support this framework, we also introduce a large-scale quadrilateral mesh dataset, TopGen-220K, featuring high-quality paired data comprising raw triangular meshes, structural layouts, cross-fields, and their corresponding quad meshes. Experimental results demonstrate that TopGen significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in both geometric fidelity and topological edge flow rationality.

Surprising increase of electron temperature in metal-rich star-forming region

The electron temperature is a crucial parameter for the determination of the gas-phase metallicity of galaxies. Low electron temperature is expected for metal-rich galaxies, theoretically. We report the discovery that temperature, as measured through auroral-to-strong line ratios of O$^+$, trends in reverse directions at 12+log(O/H) $\geq$ 8.7. This trend remains consistent regardless of the emission line fitting method employed and is not attributable to contamination or dust attenuation correction. Notably, this phenomenon is not observed in other low-ionization ions, such as S$^+$ and N$^+$, which also probe electron temperature. The results are verified in two independent datasets. We analyze the potential cause for the high [OII] auroral-to-strong line ratios at high metallicities, finding that no specific reason could account for that. This finding challenges the fundamental principles of the direct $T_e$ method for metallicity measurement, warranting further investigation into its physical interpretation.

Consistent Gas-Phase Temperatures and Metallicities from UV and Optical Nebular Emission: A Reliable Foundation from z=0 to Cosmic Dawn

The rest-frame UV spectra of star-forming galaxies are increasingly important as they become one of the primary windows to probe the physical properties of cosmic dawn (z>8) galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope. However, the systematic discrepancies between UV and optical gas-phase metallicity measurements remain poorly understood in the local universe, partly due to challenges in achieving precise comparisons between UV and optical spectra for the same objects. In this work, we introduce a novel method that leverages the HeII 1640 and HeII 4686 nebular emission lines to achieve accurate aperture and reddening corrections between UV and optical spectra. Here we apply this method to three nearby Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies. Our results demonstrate that this approach enables precise measurements, with electron temperatures ($T_e$) derived from UV and optical spectra exhibiting closer agreement compared to previous studies, and O/H abundance agreeing within 0.1 dex. However, two BCDs appear to have lower UV-based electron temperatures $T_{e~1666} < T_{e~4363}$, in contrast to expectations from the temperature fluctuation model. We consider a variety of possible explanations for these unphysical temperatures - differential dust attenuation, aperture differences, and spatial extent of emission lines - but no suitable cause is identified. These findings suggest a complex gaseous environment associated with star formation, and underscore the need for additional observations to further investigate the nature of HeII nebular emission and address the systematic issues between UV and optical nebular properties. Nonetheless, the close empirical agreement of these results indicates that UV- and optical-based nebular temperature and abundance measurements can be reliably compared within 0.1 dex, providing a solid foundation for evolutionary studies from the local Universe to cosmic dawn.

Joint Optical and Infrared Observations of N and O Reveal the Dust-Obscured Gas in Haro 3

Accurate chemical compositions of star-forming regions are a critical diagnostic tool to characterize the star formation history and gas flows which regulate galaxy formation. However, the abundance discrepancy factor (ADF) between measurements from the "direct" optical electron temperature ($T_e$) method and from the recombination lines (RL) represents $\sim0.2$ dex systematic uncertainty in oxygen abundance. The degree of uncertainty for other elements is unknown. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of O$^{++}$ and N$^+$ ion abundances using optical and far-infrared spectra of a star-forming region within the nearby dwarf galaxy Haro 3, which exhibits a typical ADF. Assuming homogeneous conditions, the far-IR emission indicates an O abundance which is higher than the $T_e$ method and consistent with the RL value, as would be expected from temperature fluctuations, whereas the far-IR N abundance is too large to be explained by temperature fluctuations. A two-phase analytical model reveals that differential dust obscuration associated with temperature inhomogeneity is likely required to explain all the emission line ratios, and that the total oxygen metallicity of two phases is consistent with the RL metallicity. Our findings underscore the critical importance of resolving the cause of abundance discrepancies and understanding the biases between different metallicity methods. This work represents a promising methodology, and we identify further approaches to address the current dominant uncertainties.

The mass distribution of clumpy accretion onto the nearby young star TW Hya

The proliferation of high time-resolution and decades-long monitoring of classical T Tauri stars provides a vast opportunity to test the variability of the star-disk connections. However, most monitoring surveys use single broad-band filters, which makes the conversion of photometric variability into accretion rate difficult. In this study, we analyze accretion bursts onto the nearby young star TW Hya over short (hours, days) and long (months, years) timescales by calibrating TESS and ASAS-SN $g$-band photometry to accretion rates with simultaneous spectroscopy. The high cadence TESS light curve shows bursts of accretion in clumps with masses from a sensitivity limit of $\sim10^{-13}$~M$_\odot$ up to $3\times 10^{-11}$\,M$_\odot$. The average burst duration of 1.8 days is longer than a simple estimate of the thermal response timescale, supporting the interpretation that the photometric variability probes the instantaneous accretion rate. The reset timescale of 1.2--2 days derived from the structure function and previously reported quasi-periods of 3.5--4 days are consistent with bursts that may be related to the different rotation between the stellar magnetosphere and inner disk or with azimuthal asymmetries in the inner disk. The near-daily ASAS-SN light curve across 8 years reveals some seasonal changes in brightness with a standard deviation of $\sim 0.13$ mag, about half of the scatter seen on short timescales. This study demonstrates the importance of coordinating contemporaneous multi-epoch spectroscopy with time domain surveys to interpret light curves of young stars.

CECILIA: Gas-Phase Physical Conditions and Multi-Element Chemistry at Cosmic Noon

Galaxies at Cosmic Noon (z$\sim$2-3) are characterized by rapid star formation that will lead to significant metal enrichment in the interstellar medium (ISM). While much observational evidence suggests that these galaxies are chemically distinct from those in the local Universe, directly measuring the ISM chemistry in large samples of high-z galaxies is only now possible with the observational capabilities of JWST. In this first key paper of the CECILIA program, we present the direct-method physical conditions and multi-element abundances in twenty galaxies at Cosmic Noon. Using a combination of archival Keck/MOSFIRE and new $\sim$30-hr NIRSpec spectroscopy, we measure multiple electron gas densities and the temperature structure from the O$^+$ and S$^{2+}$ ions. We find that n$_e$[O II] and n$_e$[S II] are comparable but elevated with respect to n$_e$ in local star-forming galaxies, and the simultaneous T$_e$[O II] and T$_e$[S III] generally agree with photoionization model T$_e$ scaling relations. The O abundances in the CECILIA galaxies range from 12+log(O/H)$=$7.76-8.81 (12-131% solar O/H), representing some of the highest direct-method metallicities and lowest T$_e$ (T$_e$[O II]$\approx$6500 K) measured with JWST to date. The CECILIA galaxies exhibit significantly sub-solar S/O and Ar/O a signature of predominant enrichment from core collapse supernovae. The N/O-O/H trends in the CECILIA galaxies generally agree with the abundance trends in local nebulae, but the large scatter in N/O could be sensitive to the star-formation history. The CECILIA observations demonstrate that exceptionally deep JWST spectroscopy can unveil the multi-element ISM abundance patterns in typical high-z galaxies.

Consistent gas-phase C/O abundances from UV and optical emission lines: a robust scale for chemical evolution across cosmic time

The carbon to oxygen (C/O) abundance ratio is a valuable tracer of star formation history, as C and O enrichment occurs on different timescales. However, measurements based on ultraviolet (UV) collisionally excited lines and those based on optical recombination lines may be subject to biases from the abundance discrepancy factor (ADF), which is well established for oxygen but uncertain for carbon. We present precise UV-based measurements of gas-phase C$^{2+}$/O$^{2+}$ ionic abundance in four H II regions which have prior optical-based measurements, combined with archival UV data for two additional H II regions, in order to establish a reliable abundance scale and to investigate biases between the two methods. We find a clear ADF for the C$^{2+}$ ion which is consistent with that of O$^{2+}$, assuming a similar temperature structure in the zones of the nebula which these ions occupy. The C/O abundance derived from UV collisional lines and optical recombination lines is therefore also consistent to within $<0.1$ dex, with an offset of $0.05\pm0.03$ dex in C$^{2+}$/O$^{2+}$ for the standard T$_e$ method. While the absolute C/H and O/H abundances are subject to large uncertainty from the ADF, our results establish that C/O abundances measured from these different methods can be reliably compared. Thus we confirm the robustness of gas-phase C/O measurements for studying galaxy evolution and star formation timescales, including from rest-UV observations of high redshift galaxies with JWST.

SeamCrafter: Enhancing Mesh Seam Generation for Artist UV Unwrapping via Reinforcement Learning

Mesh seams play a pivotal role in partitioning 3D surfaces for UV parametrization and texture mapping. Poorly placed seams often result in severe UV distortion or excessive fragmentation, thereby hindering texture synthesis and disrupting artist workflows. Existing methods frequently trade one failure mode for another-producing either high distortion or many scattered islands. To address this, we introduce SeamCrafter, an autoregressive GPT-style seam generator conditioned on point cloud inputs. SeamCrafter employs a dual-branch point-cloud encoder that disentangles and captures complementary topological and geometric cues during pretraining. To further enhance seam quality, we fine-tune the model using Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) on a preference dataset derived from a novel seam-evaluation framework. This framework assesses seams primarily by UV distortion and fragmentation, and provides pairwise preference labels to guide optimization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SeamCrafter produces seams with substantially lower distortion and fragmentation than prior approaches, while preserving topological consistency and visual fidelity.

ArtUV: Artist-style UV Unwrapping

UV unwrapping is an essential task in computer graphics, enabling various visual editing operations in rendering pipelines. However, existing UV unwrapping methods struggle with time-consuming, fragmentation, lack of semanticity, and irregular UV islands, limiting their practical use. An artist-style UV map must not only satisfy fundamental criteria, such as overlap-free mapping and minimal distortion, but also uphold higher-level standards, including clean boundaries, efficient space utilization, and semantic coherence. We introduce ArtUV, a fully automated, end-to-end method for generating artist-style UV unwrapping. We simulates the professional UV mapping process by dividing it into two stages: surface seam prediction and artist-style UV parameterization. In the seam prediction stage, SeamGPT is used to generate semantically meaningful cutting seams. Then, in the parameterization stage, a rough UV obtained from an optimization-based method, along with the mesh, is fed into an Auto-Encoder, which refines it into an artist-style UV map. Our method ensures semantic consistency and preserves topological structure, making the UV map ready for 2D editing. We evaluate ArtUV across multiple benchmarks and show that it serves as a versatile solution, functioning seamlessly as either a plug-in for professional rendering tools or as a standalone system for rapid, high-quality UV generation.

Mapping the z ~ 2 Circumgalactic Medium using KBSS Galaxy Pairs

We present new results on the spatial structure and kinematics of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of z ~ 2 star-forming galaxies drawn from the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey, using Lya and metallic ion absorption recorded in spectra of background galaxies whose sightlines are projected within ~ 30" (physical distances D_tran < 250 kpc) of the foreground galaxy. The sample of 1033 foreground galaxies ( = 2.03; 8 < log(M_star/M_sun) < 11) is probed by the spectra of 736 background galaxies obtained using Keck/KCWI (R ~ 1800) and Keck/LRIS (R ~ 1200). Using the galaxy pair ensemble, we present measurements of absorption strength (W_lambda) and line-of-sight velocity dispersion (sigma) as a function of D_tran, which together with "down-the-barrel" spectra of the foreground galaxies provide unprecedented maps of neutral hydrogen and ionized metals throughout the CGM of star-forming galaxies at "cosmic noon". A 2D map of Lya absorption depth (vs. line-of-sight velocity and D_tran) for the full ensemble shows a distinct transition near D_tran ~ 80 kpc (close to the virial radius of the average foreground galaxy) where the line-of-sight velocity dispersion reaches a minimum and beyond which the Lya absorption depth flattens. Splitting the sample into subsets based on foreground galaxy properties, we find a strong and monotonic correlation of both W_lambda(C IV) and sigma(C IV) with stellar mass (M_star) at all D_tran including DTB (i.e., D_tran ~ 0 - 250 kpc). Taken together, our results suggest that the kinematics, covering fraction, and spatial extent of CGM gas traced by Lya and (especially) CIV are modulated primarily by halo mass, and that a significant fraction of the CGM gas may be unbound.

Resolved Stellar and Nebular Kinematics of a Star-forming Galaxy at $z\sim2$

The kinematics of star-forming galaxy populations at high redshifts are integral to our understanding of disk properties, merger rates, and other defining characteristics. Nebular gas emission is a common tracer of galaxies' gravitational potentials and angular momenta, but is sensitive to non-gravitational forces as well as galactic outflows, and thus might not accurately trace the host galaxy dynamics. We present kinematic maps of young stars from rest-ultraviolet photospheric absorption in the star-forming galaxy CASSOWARY 13 (a.k.a. SDSS J1237+5533) at $z=1.87$ using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager, alongside nebular emission measurements from the same observations. Gravitational lensing magnification of the galaxy enables good spatial sampling of multiple independent lensed images. We find close agreement between the stellar and nebular velocity fields. We measure a mean local velocity dispersion of $σ= 64\pm12$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$ for the young stars, consistent with that of the H II regions traced by nebular C III] emission ($52\pm9$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$). The $\sim20$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$ average difference in line-of-sight velocity is much smaller than the local velocity width and the velocity gradient ($\gtrsim 100$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$). We find no evidence of asymmetric drift nor evidence that outflows bias the nebular kinematics, and thus conclude that nebular emission appears to be a reasonable dynamical tracer of young stars in the galaxy. These results support the picture of star formation in thick disks with high velocity dispersion at $z\sim2$, and represent an important step towards establishing robust kinematics of early galaxies using collisionless tracers.

Auto-Regressive Surface Cutting

Surface cutting is a fundamental task in computer graphics, with applications in UV parameterization, texture mapping, and mesh decomposition. However, existing methods often produce technically valid but overly fragmented atlases that lack semantic coherence. We introduce SeamGPT, an auto-regressive model that generates cutting seams by mimicking professional workflows. Our key technical innovation lies in formulating surface cutting as a next token prediction task: sample point clouds on mesh vertices and edges, encode them as shape conditions, and employ a GPT-style transformer to sequentially predict seam segments with quantized 3D coordinates. Our approach achieves exceptional performance on UV unwrapping benchmarks containing both manifold and non-manifold meshes, including artist-created, and 3D-scanned models. In addition, it enhances existing 3D segmentation tools by providing clean boundaries for part decomposition.

The Lyman-alpha Halos of Galaxies at z=2-3 in the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey

We present the large-scale spatial Lya profiles of galaxies from the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) at 2 50 kpc, theta > 6''). We find that the scale length of the Lya halo is not strongly dependent on the properties of the central galaxy, including its net continuum luminosity or EW_Lya, although we find a possible weak tendency of continuum-faint, high-EW_Lya galaxies to exhibit larger Lya halos in contrast with previous work.

Stacking PANCAKEZ: sPectroscopic Analysis with NirspeC stAcKs in the Epoch of reioniZation. Weak ISM Absorption and Implications for Ionizing Photon Escape at $z\sim7$

We present a spectral stacking analysis of galaxies at $z\geq6$ observed with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We curate a sample of $64$ galaxies spanning redshifts $z_{\rm spec} = 6.0 - 9.4$ which have NIRSpec medium resolution data. The stacks achieve sufficient signal-to-noise to measure equivalent widths (EW) and velocity centroids ($v_{\rm{cen}}$) of low-ionization species (LIS) absorption features, transmitted Lyman-alpha ($\rm{Lyα}$) emission, and nebular emission lines. Overall, we find our sample has weaker LIS absorption lines ($\rm{EW}(\rm{LIS}) \approx 1 Å$), smaller $v_{\rm{cen,LIS}} \approx -20 \pm 50~ \rm{km} \; \rm{s}^{-1}$, and significantly suppressed $\rm{Lyα}$ emission ($\rm{EW}(\rm{Lyα}) \approx 5~Å$), compared to similar studies undertaken at lower redshift. The weaker LIS absorption may suggest a lower covering fraction of HI and larger escape fraction of ionizing photons from our sample. Additionally, the smaller blueshifted $v_{\rm{cen,LIS}}$ indicates less prevalent or weaker outflows in $z>6$ galaxies. Stacking our sub-sample of $\rm{Lyα}$ emitters (LAEs), we find high EW$(\rm{H}β) \approx 170 \pm 4~Å$ and a detection of nebular $\rm{C}\; \rm{IV}$ emission suggesting higher $ξ_{ion}$ in LAEs at $z>6$. This work showcases the enormous potential for stacked JWST spectra revealing properties of galaxies and their diffuse interstellar medium in the epoch of reionization.
