Hessian-Free Second-Order Adversarial Examples for Adversarial Learning

Recent studies show deep neural networks (DNNs) are extremely vulnerable to the elaborately designed adversarial examples. Adversarial learning with those adversarial examples has been proved as one of the most effective methods to defend against such an attack. At present, most existing adversarial examples generation methods are based on first-order gradients, which can hardly further improve models' robustness, especially when facing second-order adversarial attacks. Compared with first-order gradients, second-order gradients provide a more accurate approximation of the loss landscape with respect to natural examples. Inspired by this, our work crafts second-order adversarial examples and uses them to train DNNs. Nevertheless, second-order optimization involves time-consuming calculation for Hessian-inverse. We propose an approximation method through transforming the problem into an optimization in the Krylov subspace, which remarkably reduce the computational complexity to speed up the training procedure. Extensive experiments conducted on the MINIST and CIFAR-10 datasets show that our adversarial learning with second-order adversarial examples outperforms other fisrt-order methods, which can improve the model robustness against a wide range of attacks.

Do conspicuous manuscripts experience shorter time in the duration of peer review?

A question often asked by authors is how long would it take for the peer review process. Peer review duration has been concerned much by authors and attracted much attention in academia these years. Existing research on this field focuses primarily on a single quantitative dimension. Seldom studies considered that peer review duration is closely related to the attractiveness of manuscripts. This study aims to fill this research gap employing attention economy theory. By analyzing the peer review history from the British Medical Journal (BMJ), we find that a significant negative relationship exists between the peer review duration and altmetric attention score (AAs). Overall, our study contributes to understanding peer review behavior from a new perspective and bridging the divide between peer reviews and altmetrics.

Probing Heavy Spin-2 Bosons with $γγ$ final states from Vector Boson Fusion Processes at the LHC

New massive spin-2 particles are predicted in theoretical extensions to the Standard Model (SM) attempting to solve the hierarchy problem. Such theories postulate that gravity is diluted compared to the other fundamental forces because it can propagate in extra spatial dimensions. While such theoretical models are of high experimental interest because they predict massive spin-2 particles ($Y_{2}$) potentially detectable by collider experiments, searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have thus far produced no significant evidence for their existence. This work considers a hypothetical physics scenario where low coupling strengths between the $Y_{2}$ and quarks/gluons is the underlying reason behind the null $Y_{2}$ search results at the LHC, which have mainly relied on Drell-Yan and gluon-gluon fusion production mechanisms. The focus of this paper is a feasibility study to search for $Y_{2}$ particles using vector boson fusion (VBF) processes at the LHC. In the context of an effective field theory approach with varying couplings $κ_{V}$ between $Y_{2}$ and the weak bosons of the SM, we consider the $Y_{2}\toγγ$ decay mode to show that the requirement of a diphoton pair combined with two high $p_{T}$ forward jets with large dijet mass and with large separation in pseudorapidity can significantly reduce the SM backgrounds. Assuming proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, we present the total VBF production cross sections, $Y_{2}$ decay widths, and $Y_{2}\toγγ$ branching ratios as a function of $m(Y_{2})$, considering universal and non-universal couplings to the SM particles. The unitarity-violating phase space is described. The proposed VBF $Y_{2}\toγγ$ search is expected to achieve a discovery reach with signal significance greater than 5$σ$ for $Y_{2}$ masses up to 4.4 TeV and $κ_{V}$ couplings down to 0.5.
