Submillimetre galaxies in two massive protoclusters at z = 2.24: witnessing the enrichment of extreme starbursts in the outskirts of HAE density peaks

Submillimetre galaxies represent a rapid growth phase of both star formation and massive galaxies. Mapping SMGs in galaxy protoclusters provides key insights into where and how these extreme starbursts take place in connections with the assembly of the large-scale structure in the early Universe. We search for SMGs at 850$\,μm$ using JCMT/SCUBA-2 in two massive protoclusters at $z=2.24$, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, and detect 43 and 54 sources with $S_{850}>4\,$mJy at the $4σ$ level within an effective area of 264$\,$arcmin$^2$, respectively. We construct the intrinsic number counts and find that the abundance of SMGs is $2.0\pm0.3$ and $2.1\pm0.2$ times that of the general fields, confirming that BOSS1244 and BOSS1542 contain a higher fraction of dusty galaxies with strongly enhanced star formation. The volume densities of the SMGs are estimated to be $\sim15-$30 times the average, significantly higher than the overdensity factor ($\sim 6$) traced by H$α$ emission-line galaxies (HAEs). More importantly, we discover a prominent offset between the spatial distributions of the two populations in these two protoclusters -- SMGs are mostly located around the high-density regions of HAEs, and few are seen inside these regions. This finding may have revealed for the first time the occurrence of violent star formation enhancement in the outskirts of the HAE density peaks, likely driven by the boosting of gas supplies and/or starburst triggering events. Meanwhile, the lack of SMGs inside the most overdense regions at $z\sim2$ implies a transition to the environment disfavouring extreme starbursts.

Systematic biases in determining dust attenuation curves through galaxy SED fitting

While the slope of the dust attenuation curve ($δ$) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation ($A_V$) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope ($β_0$) spanning over a reasonably wide range. The best-fitting $β_0$ for our sample SFGs shows a wide coverage, dramatically differing from the limited range of $β_0<-2.2$ for a starburst of constant star formation. Our results show that strong degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$ in the SED fitting induce systematic biases leading to a false $A_V$--$δ$ correlation. Our simulation tests reveal that this relationship can be well reproduced even when a flat $A_V$--$δ$ relation is taken to build the input model galaxy SEDs. The variations in best-fitting $δ$ are dominated by the fitting errors. We show that assuming a starburst with constant star formation in SED fitting will result in a steeper attenuation curve, smaller degeneracy errors, and a stronger $A_V$--$δ$ relation. Our findings confirm that the $A_V$--$δ$ relation obtained through SED fitting is likely driven by the systematic biases induced by the fitting degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$.

The cosmic environment overtakes the local density in shaping galaxy star formation

The gas supply from the cosmic web is the key to sustain star formation in galaxies. It remains to be explored how the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS) effects on galaxy evolution at given local environments. We examine galaxy specific star formation rate as a function of local density in a LSS at $z=0.735$ in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. The LSS is mapped by 732 galaxies with $R<24$\,mag and redshift at $0.72\le z \le 0.75$ collected from the literature and our spectroscopic observations with Magellan/IMACS, consisting of five galaxy clusters/groups and surrounding filaments over an area of $23.9 \times22.7$\,co-moving\,Mpc$^2$. The spread of spectroscopic redshifts corresponds a velocity dispersion of 494\,km\,s$^{-1}$, indicating the LSS likely to be a thin sheet with a galaxy density $\gtrsim 3.9$ times that of the general field. These clusters/groups in this LSS mostly exhibit elongated morphologies and multiple components connected with surrounding filaments. Strikingly, we find that star-forming galaxies in the LSS keep star formation at the same level as field, and show no dependence on local density but stellar mass. Meanwhile, an increasing fraction of quiescent galaxies is detected at increasing local density in both the LSS and the field, consistent with the expectation that galaxy mass and local dense environment hold the key to quench star formation. Combined together, we conclude that the cosmic environment of the LSS overtakes the local environment in remaining galaxy star formation to the level of the field.

Convolutional Ordinal Regression Forest for Image Ordinal Estimation

Image ordinal estimation is to predict the ordinal label of a given image, which can be categorized as an ordinal regression problem. Recent methods formulate an ordinal regression problem as a series of binary classification problems. Such methods cannot ensure that the global ordinal relationship is preserved since the relationships among different binary classifiers are neglected. We propose a novel ordinal regression approach, termed Convolutional Ordinal Regression Forest or CORF, for image ordinal estimation, which can integrate ordinal regression and differentiable decision trees with a convolutional neural network for obtaining precise and stable global ordinal relationships. The advantages of the proposed CORF are twofold. First, instead of learning a series of binary classifiers \emph{independently}, the proposed method aims at learning an ordinal distribution for ordinal regression by optimizing those binary classifiers \emph{simultaneously}. Second, the differentiable decision trees in the proposed CORF can be trained together with the ordinal distribution in an end-to-end manner. The effectiveness of the proposed CORF is verified on two image ordinal estimation tasks, i.e. facial age estimation and image aesthetic assessment, showing significant improvements and better stability over the state-of-the-art ordinal regression methods.

Improving Robustness to Model Inversion Attacks via Mutual Information Regularization

This paper studies defense mechanisms against model inversion (MI) attacks -- a type of privacy attacks aimed at inferring information about the training data distribution given the access to a target machine learning model. Existing defense mechanisms rely on model-specific heuristics or noise injection. While being able to mitigate attacks, existing methods significantly hinder model performance. There remains a question of how to design a defense mechanism that is applicable to a variety of models and achieves better utility-privacy tradeoff. In this paper, we propose the Mutual Information Regularization based Defense (MID) against MI attacks. The key idea is to limit the information about the model input contained in the prediction, thereby limiting the ability of an adversary to infer the private training attributes from the model prediction. Our defense principle is model-agnostic and we present tractable approximations to the regularizer for linear regression, decision trees, and neural networks, which have been successfully attacked by prior work if not attached with any defenses. We present a formal study of MI attacks by devising a rigorous game-based definition and quantifying the associated information leakage. Our theoretical analysis sheds light on the inefficacy of DP in defending against MI attacks, which has been empirically observed in several prior works. Our experiments demonstrate that MID leads to state-of-the-art performance for a variety of MI attacks, target models and datasets.

The Secret Revealer: Generative Model-Inversion Attacks Against Deep Neural Networks

This paper studies model-inversion attacks, in which the access to a model is abused to infer information about the training data. Since its first introduction, such attacks have raised serious concerns given that training data usually contain privacy-sensitive information. Thus far, successful model-inversion attacks have only been demonstrated on simple models, such as linear regression and logistic regression. Previous attempts to invert neural networks, even the ones with simple architectures, have failed to produce convincing results. We present a novel attack method, termed the generative model-inversion attack, which can invert deep neural networks with high success rates. Rather than reconstructing private training data from scratch, we leverage partial public information, which can be very generic, to learn a distributional prior via generative adversarial networks (GANs) and use it to guide the inversion process. Moreover, we theoretically prove that a model's predictive power and its vulnerability to inversion attacks are indeed two sides of the same coin---highly predictive models are able to establish a strong correlation between features and labels, which coincides exactly with what an adversary exploits to mount the attacks. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed attack improves identification accuracy over the existing work by about 75\% for reconstructing face images from a state-of-the-art face recognition classifier. We also show that differential privacy, in its canonical form, is of little avail to defend against our attacks.

Ordinal Distribution Regression for Gait-based Age Estimation

Computer vision researchers prefer to estimate age from face images because facial features provide useful information. However, estimating age from face images becomes challenging when people are distant from the camera or occluded. A person's gait is a unique biometric feature that can be perceived efficiently even at a distance. Thus, gait can be used to predict age when face images are not available. However, existing gait-based classification or regression methods ignore the ordinal relationship of different ages, which is an important clue for age estimation. This paper proposes an ordinal distribution regression with a global and local convolutional neural network for gait-based age estimation. Specifically, we decompose gait-based age regression into a series of binary classifications to incorporate the ordinal age information. Then, an ordinal distribution loss is proposed to consider the inner relationships among these classifications by penalizing the distribution discrepancy between the estimated value and the ground truth. In addition, our neural network comprises a global and three local sub-networks, and thus, is capable of learning the global structure and local details from the head, body, and feet. Experimental results indicate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art gait-based age estimation methods on the OULP-Age dataset.

Record-High Superconductivity in Niobium-Titanium Alloy

Here we report the observation of extraordinary superconductivity in a pressurized commercial niobium-titanium alloy. We find that its zero-resistance superconductivity persists from ambient pressure to the pressure as high as 261.7 GPa, a record high pressure up to which a known superconducting state can continuously survives. Remarkably, at such an ultra-high pressure, although the ambient pressure volume is shrunk by 45% without structural phase transition, the superconducting transition temperature (TC) increases to ~19.1 K from ~9.6 K, and the critical magnetic field (HC2) at 1.8 K has been enhanced to 19 T from 15.4 T. These results set new records for both of the TC and the HC2 among all the known alloy superconductors composed of only transition metal elements. The remarkable high pressure superconducting properties observed in the NbTi alloy not only expand our knowledge on this important commercial superconductor but also are helpful for a better understanding on the superconducting mechanism.

Topological semimetal state and field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction in antiferromagnetic monopnictide NdSb

We report the experimental realization of Dirac semimetal state in NdSb, a material with antiferromagnetic ground state. The occurrence of topological semimetal state has been well supported by our band structure calculations and the experimental observation of chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance. A field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed, in response to the change of spin polarization. The observation of topological semimetal state in a magnetic material provides an opportunity to investigate the magneto-topological phenomena.

Recognition of Fermi-arc states through the magnetoresistance quantum oscillations in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 nanoplates

The disjointed Fermi-arcs in Weyl semimetals can intertwine with chiral bulk modes and participate in unusual closed magnetic orbits in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. Here we carry out the quantum oscillation study of such unusual Weyl magnetic orbits in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2, a close cousin of Weyl semimetals. We find that extra two-dimensional (2D) quantum oscillations emerge at high field, which superimpose on 3D bulk background and can be attributed to the Weyl magnetic orbits, when the thickness of nanoplates is smaller than the mean free path of the electrons. Further evidence of the 2D quantum oscillations from the Weyl magnetic orbits is provided by the nonlocal detection, which demonstrates an alternative way to study the quantum transport properties of Fermi-arcs under magnetic field.

Probing the Chiral Anomaly by Planar Hall Effect in Three-dimensional Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2 Nanoplates

Searching for exotic transport properties in new topological state of matters is an active topic. One of the most fascinating achievements is the chiral anomaly in recently discovered Weyl semimetals (WSMs), which is manifested as a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR) in the presence of a magnetic field B parallel to an electric field E. Another predicted key effect closely related to the chiral anomaly is the planar Hall effect (PHE), which has not been identified in WSMs so far. Here we carried out the planar Hall measurements on Cd3As2 nanoplates, and found that, accompanied by the large negative LMR, a PHE with non-zero transverse voltage can be developed while tilting the in-plane magnetic field B away from the electric field E. Further experiments reveal that both the PHE and the negative LMR can be suppressed synchronously by increasing the temperature, but still visible at room temperature, indicating the same origin of these two effects. The observation of PHE in Cd3As2 nanoplates gives another transport evidence for the chiral anomaly and provides a deep insight into the chiral charge pumping in Weyl Fermions system.

Tricritical point and phase diagram based on critical scaling in monoaxial chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2

In this work, the magnetism of the single crystal Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$, which exhibits chiral magnetic soliton lattice (CSL) state, is investigated. The magnetization displays strong magnetic anisotropy when the field is applied perpendicularly and parallel to the $c$-axis in low field region ($H<H_{S}$, $H_{S}$ is the saturation field). The critical exponents of Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$ are obtained as $β=$ 0.370(4), $γ=$ 1.380(2), and $δ=$ 4.853(6), which are close to the theoretical prediction of three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Based on the scaling equation and the critical exponents, the $H-T$ phase diagram in the vicinity of the phase transition is constructed, where two critical points are determined. One is a tricritical point which locates at the intersection between the CSL, forced ferromagnetic (FFM), and paramagnetic (PM) states. The other one is a critical point situated at the boundaries between CSL, helimagnetic (HM), and PM states.

Field induced topological phase transition from a three-dimensional Weyl semimetal to a two-dimensional massive Dirac metal in ZrTe5

Symmetry protected Dirac semimetals can be transformed into Weyl semimetals by breaking the protecting symmetry, leading to many exotic quantum phenomena such as chiral anomaly and anomalous Hall effect. Here we show that, due to the large Zeeman g factor and small band width along b-axis in Dirac semimetal ZrTe5, a magnetic field of about 8 T along b-axis direction may annihilate the Weyl points and open up a two-dimensional (2D) Dirac mass gap, when the Zeeman splitting exceeds the band width along b-axis. This is manifested by a sharp drop of magnetoresistance (MR) above 8 T, which is probably due to additional carriers induced by the orbital splitting of the zeroth Landau level associated with the 2D Dirac point, which is descendant of the original Weyl points. Further evidence of the additional carriers is provided by the Hall effect and different anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in low and high field regions. Our experiment reveals a probable topological quantum phase transition of field induced Weyl points annihilation in Dirac semimetal ZrTe5 and gives an alternative explanation for the drop of MR at high field.

Manipulating Multiple Order Parameters via Oxygen Vacancies: The case of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ

Controlling functionalities, such as magnetism or ferroelectricity, by means of oxygen vacancies (VO) is a key issue for the future development of transition metal oxides. Progress in this field is currently addressed through VO variations and their impact on mainly one order parameter. Here we reveal a new mechanism for tuning both magnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously by using VO. Combined experimental and density-functional theory studies of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies create Ti3+ 3d1 defect states, mediating the ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Eu 4f7 spins, and increase an off-center displacement of Ti ions, enhancing the ferroelectric Curie temperature. The dual function of Ti sites also promises a magnetoelectric coupling in the Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ.

Direct imaging of a zero-field target skyrmion and its polarity switch in a chiral magnetic nanodisk

A target skyrmion is a flux-closed spin texture that has two-fold degeneracy and is promising as a binary state in next generation universal memories. Although its formation in nanopatterned chiral magnets has been predicted, its observation has remained challenging. Here, we use off-axis electron holography to record images of target skyrmions in a 160-nm-diameter nanodisk of the chiral magnet FeGe. We compare experimental measurements with numerical simulations, demonstrate switching between two stable degenerate target skyrmion ground states that have opposite polarities and rotation senses and discuss the observed switching mechanism.

Experimental observation of magnetic bobbers for a new concept of magnetic solid-state memory

The use of chiral skyrmions, which are nanoscale vortex-like spin textures, as movable data bit carriers forms the basis of a recently proposed concept for magnetic solid-state memory. In this concept, skyrmions are considered to be unique localized spin textures, which are used to encode data through the quantization of different distances between identical skyrmions on a guiding nanostripe. However, the conservation of distances between highly mobile and interacting skyrmions is difficult to implement in practice. Here, we report the direct observation of another type of theoretically-predicted localized magnetic state, which is referred to as a chiral bobber (ChB), using quantitative off-axis electron holography. We show that ChBs can coexist together with skyrmions. Our results suggest a novel approach for data encoding, whereby a stream of binary data representing a sequence of ones and zeros can be encoded via a sequence of skyrmions and bobbers. The need to maintain defined distances between data bit carriers is then not required. The proposed concept of data encoding promises to expedite the realization of a new generation of magnetic solid-state memory.

Extremely large magnetoresistance in a topological semimetal candidate pyrite PtBi2

While pyrite-type PtBi2 with face-centered cubic structure has been predicted to be a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal, experimental study on its physical properties remains absent. Here we report the angular-dependent magnetoresistance (MR) measurements of PtBi2 single-crystal under high magnetic fields. We observed extreme large unsaturated magnetoresistance (XMR) up to 11.2 million percent at T = 1.8 K in a magnetic field of 33 T, which surpasses the previously reported Dirac materials, such as WTe2, LaSb and NbP. The crystals exhibit an ultrahigh mobility and significant Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry's phase. Analysis of Hall resistivity indicates that the XMR can be ascribed to the nearly compensated electron and hole. Our experimental results associated with the ab initio calculations suggest that pyrite PtBi2 is a topological semimetal candidate which might provide a platform for exploring topological materials with XMR in noble metal alloys.

Stepwise quantized surface states and delayed Landau level hybridization in Co cluster-decorated BiSbTeSe2 topological insulator devices

In three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs), the nontrivial topology in their electronic bands casts a gapless state on their solid surfaces, using which dissipationless TI edge devices based on the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and quantum Hall (QH) effect have been demonstrated. Practical TI devices present a pair of parallel-transport topological surface states (TSSs) on their top and bottom surfaces. However, due to the no-go theorem, the two TSSs always appear as a pair and are expected to quantize synchronously. Quantized transport of a separate Dirac channel is still desirable, but has never been observed in graphene even after intense investigation over a period of 13 years, with the potential aim of half-QHE. By depositing Co atomic clusters, we achieved stepwise quantization of the top and bottom surfaces in BiSbTeSe2 (BSTS) TI devices. Renormalization group flow diagrams13, 22 (RGFDs) reveal two sets of converging points (CVPs) in the (Gxy, Gxx) space, where the top surface travels along an anomalous quantization trajectory while the bottom surface retains 1/2 e2/h. This results from delayed Landau-level (LL) hybridization (DLLH) due to coupling between Co clusters and TSS Fermions.
