The non-perturbative phase diagram of the BMN matrix model

We study the maximally supersymmetric plane wave matrix model (the BMN model) at finite temperature, $T$, and locate the high temperature phase boundary in the $(μ,T)$ plane, where $μ$ is the mass parameter. We find the first transition, as the system is cooled from high temperatures, is from an approximately $SO(9)$ symmetric phase to one where three matrices expand to form fuzzy spheres. For $μ> 3.0$ there is a second distinct transition at a lower temperature. The two transitions approach one another at smaller $μ$ and merge in the vicinity of $μ=3.0$. The resulting single transition curve then approaches the gauge/gravity prediction as $μ$ is further decreased. We find a rough estimate of the transition, for all $μ$, is given by a Padé resummation of the large-$μ$, 3-loop perturbative, predictions. We find evidence that the transition at small $μ$ is to an M5-brane phase of the theory.

Spherical transverse M5-branes from the plane wave matrix model

We consider matrix theoretical description of transverse M5-branes in M-theory on the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background. We apply the localization to the plane wave matrix model (PWMM) and show that the transverse spherical fivebranes with zero light cone energy in M-theory are realized as the distribution of low energy moduli of the $SO(6)$ scalar fields in PWMM.

The Flavoured BFSS Model at High Temperature

We study the high temperature series expansion of the Berkooz-Douglas matrix model which describes the D0/D4--brane system. At high temperature the model is weakly coupled and we develop the series to second order. We check our results against the high temperature regime of the bosonic model (without fermions) and find excellent agreement. We track the temperature dependence of the bosonic model and find backreaction of the fundamental fields lifts the zero temperature adjoint mass degeneracy. In the low temperature phase the system is well described by a gaussian model with three masses $m^t_A=1.964 \pm 0.003$, $m^l_A=2.001 \pm 0.003$ and $m_f=1.463 \pm 0.001$, the adjoint longitudional and transverse masses and the mass of the fundamental fields respectively.

On the transverse M5-branes in matrix theory

It has been a long-standing problem how the transverse M5-branes are described in the matrix-model formulations of M-theory. We consider this problem for M-theory on the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave geometry, which admits transverse spherical M5-branes with zero light-cone energy. By using the localization, we directly analyze the strong coupling region of the corresponding matrix theory called the plane wave matrix model (PWMM). Under the assumption that the low energy modes of the scalar fields in PWMM become mutually commuting in the strong coupling region, we show that the eigenvalue density of the $SO(6)$ scalars in the low energy region exactly agrees with the shape of the spherical M5-branes in the decoupling limit. This result gives a strong evidence that the transverse M5-branes are indeed contained in the matrix theory and the theory realizes a second quantization of the M-theory.

Melnikov's method in String Theory

Melnikov's method is an analytical way to show the existence of classical chaos generated by a Smale horseshoe. It is a powerful technique, though its applicability is somewhat limited. In this paper, we present a solution of type IIB supergravity to which Melnikov's method is applicable. This is a brane-wave type deformation of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background. By employing two reduction ansätze, we study two types of coupled pendulum-oscillator systems. Then the Melnikov function is computed for each of the systems by following the standard way of Holmes and Marsden and the existence of chaos is shown analytically.

Chaotic strings in a near Penrose limit of AdS$_5\times T^{1,1}$

We study chaotic motions of a classical string in a near Penrose limit of AdS$_5\times T^{1,1}$. It is known that chaotic solutions appear on $R\times T^{1,1}$, depending on initial conditions. It may be interesting to ask whether the chaos persists even in Penrose limits or not. In this paper, we show that sub-leading corrections in a Penrose limit provide an unstable separatrix, so that chaotic motions are generated as a consequence of collapsed Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) tori. Our analysis is based on deriving a reduced system composed of two degrees of freedom by supposing a winding string ansatz. Then, we provide support for the existence of chaos by computing Poincare sections. In comparison to the AdS$_5\times T^{1,1}$ case, we argue that no chaos lives in a near Penrose limit of AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, as expected from the classical integrability of the parent system.

Chaos in the BMN matrix model

We study classical chaotic motions in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model. For this purpose, it is convenient to focus upon a reduced system composed of two-coupled anharmonic oscillators by supposing an ansatz. We examine three ansätze: 1) two pulsating fuzzy spheres, 2) a single Coulomb-type potential, and 3) integrable fuzzy spheres. For the first two cases, we show the existence of chaos by computing Poincaré sections and a Lyapunov spectrum. The third case leads to an integrable system. As a result, the BMN matrix model is not integrable in the sense of Liouville, though there may be some integrable subsectors.

Emergent bubbling geometries in gauge theories with SU(2|4) symmetry

We study the gauge/gravity duality between bubbling geometries in type IIA supergravity and gauge theories with SU(2|4) symmetry, which consist of N=4 super Yang-Mills on $R\times S^3/Z_k$, N=8 super Yang-Mills on $R\times S^2$ and the plane wave matrix model. We show that the geometries are realized as field configurations in the strong coupling region of the gauge theories. On the gravity side, the bubbling geometries can be mapped to electrostatic systems with conducting disks. We derive integral equations which determine the charge densities on the disks. On the gauge theory side, we obtain a matrix integral by applying the localization to a 1/4-BPS sector of the gauge theories. The eigenvalue densities of the matrix integral turn out to satisfy the same integral equations as the charge densities on the gravity side. Thus we find that these two objects are equivalent.

Emergent bubbling geometries in the plane wave matrix model

The gravity dual geometry of the plane wave matrix model is given by the bubbling geometry in the type IIA supergravity, which is described by an axially symmetric electrostatic system. We study a quarter BPS sector of the plane wave matrix model in terms of the localization method and show that this sector can be mapped to a one-dimensional interacting Fermi gas system. We find that the mean-field density of the Fermi gas can be identified with the charge density in the electrostatic system in the gravity side. We also find that the scaling limits in which the dual geometry reduces to the D2-brane or NS5-brane geometry are given as the free limit or the strongly coupled limit of the Fermi gas system, respectively. We reproduce the radii of $S^5$'s in these geometries by solving the Fermi gas model in the corresponding limits.

Exact results for perturbative partition functions of theories with SU(2|4) symmetry

In this paper, we study the theories with SU(2|4) symmetry which consist of the plane wave matrix model (PWMM), super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on RxS^2 and SYM on RxS^3/Z_k. The last two theories can be realized as theories around particular vacua in PWMM, through the commutative limit of fuzzy sphere and Taylor's T-duality. We apply the localization method to PWMM to reduce the partition function and the expectation values of a class of supersymmetric operators to matrix integrals. By taking the commutative limit and performing the T-duality, we also obtain the matrix integrals for SYM on RxS^2 and SYM on RxS^3/Z_k. In this calculation, we ignore possible instanton effects and our matrix integrals describe the perturbative part exactly. In terms of the matrix integrals, we also provide a nonperturbative proof of the large-N reduction for circular Wilson loop operator and free energy in N=4 SYM on RxS^3.

Large-N reduction for N=2 quiver Chern-Simons theories on S^3 and localization in matrix models

We study reduced matrix models obtained by the dimensional reduction of N=2 quiver Chern-Simons theories on S^3 to zero dimension and show that if a reduced model is expanded around a particular multiple fuzzy sphere background, it becomes equivalent to the original theory on S^3 in the large-N limit. This is regarded as a novel large-N reduction on a curved space S^3. We perform the localization method to the reduced model and compute the free energy and the vacuum expectation value of a BPS Wilson loop operator. In the large-N limit, we find an exact agreement between these results and those in the original theory on S^3.

Factorization of the Effective Action in the IIB Matrix Model

We study the low-energy effective action of the IIB matrix model in the derivative interpretation, where the diffeomorphism invariance is manifest and arbitrary manifolds are described by matrices. We show that it is expressed as a sum of terms, each of which is factorized into a product of diffeomorphism invariant action functionals: $S=\sum_{i}c_is_i+\sum_{i,j}c_{ij}s_is_j+\sum_{i,j,k}c_{ijk}s_is_js_k+\...$. Each action functional $s_i$ is an ordinary local action of the form $s_i=\int d^Dx\sqrt{-g} O_i(x)$, where $O_i(x)$ is a scalar operator. This is also true for the background consisting of block diagonal matrices. In this case, the effective action can be interpreted as describing a multiverse where the universes described by the blocks are connected by wormholes.
