Accessible information without disturbing partially known quantum states on a von Neumann algebra

This paper addresses the problem of how much information we can extract without disturbing a statistical experiment, which is a family of partially known normal states on a von Neumann algebra. We define the classical part of a statistical experiment as the restriction of the equivalent minimal sufficient statistical experiment to the center of the outcome space, which, in the case of density operators on a Hilbert space, corresponds to the classical probability distributions appearing in the maximal decomposition by Koashi and Imoto [Phys.~Rev.~A $\textbf{66}$, 022318 (2002)]. We show that we can access by a Schwarz or completely positive channel at most the classical part of a statistical experiment if we do not disturb the states. We apply this result to the broadcasting problem of a statistical experiment. We also show that the classical part of the direct product of statistical experiments is the direct product of the classical parts of the statistical experiments. The proof of the latter result is based on the theorem that the direct product of minimal sufficient statistical experiments is also minimal sufficient.

Minimal sufficient statistical experiments on von Neumann algebras

A statistical experiment on a von Neumann algebra is a parametrized family of normal states on the algebra. This paper introduces the concept of minimal sufficiency for statistical experiments in such operator algebraic situations. We define equivalence relations of statistical experiments indexed by a common parameter set by completely positive or Schwarz coarse-graining and show that any statistical experiment is equivalent to a minimal sufficient statistical experiment unique up to normal isomorphism of outcome algebras. We also establish the relationship between the minimal sufficiency condition for statistical experiment in this paper and those for subalgebra. These concepts and results are applied to the concatenation relation for completely positive channels with general input and outcome von Neumann algebras. In the case of the quantum-classical channel corresponding to the positive-operator valued measure (POVM), we prove the equivalence of the minimal sufficient condition previously proposed by the author and that in this paper. We also give a characterization of the discreteness of a POVM up to postprocessing equivalence in terms of the corresponding quantum-classical channel.

Saturation of repeated quantum measurements

We study sequential measurement scenarios where the system is repeatedly subjected to the same measurement process. We first provide examples of such repeated measurements where further repetitions of the measurement do not increase our knowledge on the system after some finite number of measurement steps. We also prove, however, that repeating the Lüders measurement of an unsharp two-outcome observable never saturates in this sense, and we characterize the observable measured in the limit of infinitely many repetitions. Our result implies that a repeated measurement can be used to correct the inherent noise of an unsharp observable.

Minimal sufficient positive-operator valued measure on a separable Hilbert space

We introduce a concept of a minimal sufficient positive-operator valued measure (POVM), which is the least redundant POVM among the POVMs that have the equivalent information about the measured quantum system. Assuming the system Hilbert space to be separable, we show that for a given POVM a sufficient statistic called a Lehmann-Scheffé-Bahadur statistic induces a minimal sufficient POVM. We also show that every POVM has an equivalent minimal sufficient POVM and that such a minimal sufficient POVM is unique up to relabeling neglecting null sets. We apply these results to discrete POVMs and information conservation conditions proposed by the author.

Construction of the least informative observable conserved by a given quantum instrument

For a quantum measurement process described by a quantum instrument $\mathcal{I}$ and a system observable corresponding to a positive-operator valued measure (POVM) $E ,$ $\mathcal{I}$ is said to conserve the information of $E$ if the joint successive measurement of $\mathcal{I}$ followed by $E$ is equivalent to a single measurement of $E .$ We show that for any quantum instrument $\mathcal{I}$ we can construct a POVM conserved by $\mathcal{I}$. Intuitively the construction gives the infinite joint successive measurement of $\mathcal{I}.$ We also show that the constructed POVM is the least informative observable among POVMs conserved by $\mathcal{I}$, i.e. the constructed POVM can be realized by a classical post-processing of any POVM conserved by $\mathcal{I} .$ As typical examples of quantum instruments, we explicitly evaluate POVMs of infinite successive measurements for photon counting and quantum counter instruments.

Tradeoff Relation between Information and Disturbance in Quantum Measurement

When we extract information from a system by performing a quantum measurement, the state of the system is disturbed due to the backaction of the measurement. Numerous studies have been performed to quantitatively formulate tradeoff relations between information and disturbance. We formulate a tradeoff relation between information and disturbance from an estimation-theoretic point of view, and derive an inequality between them. The information is defined as the classical Fisher information obtained by the measurement, and the disturbance is defined as the average loss of the quantum Fisher information. We show that pure and reversible measurements achieve the equality of the inequality. We also identify the necessary condition for various divergences between two quantum states to satisfy a similar relation. The obtained relation holds not only for the quantum relative entropy but also for the maximum quantum relative entropy.

Classicality condition on a system's observable in a quantum measurement and relative-entropy conservation law

We consider the information flow on a system's observable $X$ corresponding to a positive-operator valued measure under a quantum measurement process $Y$ described by a completely positive instrument from the viewpoint of the relative entropy. We establish a sufficient condition for the relative-entropy conservation law which states that the averaged decrease in the relative entropy of the system's observable $X$ equals the relative entropy of the measurement outcome of $Y$, i.e. the information gain due to measurement. This sufficient condition is interpreted as an assumption of classicality in the sense that there exists a sufficient statistic in a joint successive measurement of $Y$ followed by $X$ such that the probability distribution of the statistic coincides with that of a single measurement of $X$ for the pre-measurement state. We show that in the case when $X$ is a discrete projection-valued measure and $Y$ is discrete, the classicality condition is equivalent to the relative-entropy conservation for arbitrary states. The general theory on the relative-entropy conservation is applied to typical quantum measurement models, namely quantum non-demolition measurement, destructive sharp measurements on two-level systems, a photon counting, a quantum counting, homodyne and heterodyne measurements. These examples except for the non-demolition and photon-counting measurements do not satisfy the known Shannon-entropy conservation law proposed by Ban~(M. Ban, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. \textbf{32}, 1643 (1999)), implying that our approach based on the relative entropy is applicable to a wider class of quantum measurements.

Simultaneous continuous measurement of photon-counting and homodyne detection on a free photon field: dynamics of state reduction and mutual influence of measurement backaction

We analyze a simultaneous continuous measurement of photon-counting and homodyne detection. The stochastic master equation or stochastic Schrödinger equation describing the measurement process includes both jump-type and diffusive-type stochastic increments. Analytic expressions of the wave function conditioned on homodyne and photon-counting records are obtained, yielding the probability density distributions and generating functions of the measurement records. Formula for the expectation values of the homodyne records conditioned on a photon-counting event is also derived which quantitatively describes the measurement backaction of photon-counting on the homodyne output. The obtained results are applied to typical initial states --- coherent, number, thermal, and squeezed states. Monte Carlo simulations of the measurement processes are also presented to demonstrate the dynamics of the combined measurement process.
