Muon Electric Dipole Moment as a Probe of Flavor-Diagonal CP Violation

Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of elementary particles are powerful probes of new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation. The reported discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment motivates us to explore to what extent new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation to address the discrepancy is probed by searches for the muon EDM. As a benchmark, we focus on a CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model to explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly where the muon exclusively couples to one Higgs doublet. Since contributions to flavor violating processes as well as the electron EDM are suppressed, the muon EDM becomes an essential probe of the model. Our result shows that some viable parameter space leads to the muon EDM of around $d_μ \simeq 6 \times 10^{-23} \, e \, \rm cm$ probed by the PSI experiment and most of the parameter space is covered by the proposed J-PARC experiment.

Baryon Asymmetric Universe from Spontaneous CP Violation

Spontaneous CP violation, such as the Nelson-Barr (NB) mechanism, is an attractive scenario for addressing the strong CP problem while realizing the observed phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix. However, not only the CKM phase but also the baryon asymmetric Universe requires sources of CP violation. In this study, we show that a supersymmetric NB mechanism can naturally accommodate the Affleck-Dine (AD) baryogenesis within a CP-invariant Lagrangian. The model provides flat directions associated with new heavy quarks. Focusing on one of the directions, we find that the correct baryon asymmetry is obtained with a sufficiently low reheating temperature which does not cause the gravitino problem. Some parameter space is consistent with the gravitino dark matter. We assess radiative corrections to the strong CP phase induced by gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking and CP-violating heavy fields and show that the strong CP problem is solved in a viable parameter space where the visible sector supersymmetric particles must be lighter than O(100) TeV. Even in the case that they are heavier than the TeV scale, our model predicts the neutron electric dipole moment within the reach of the near future experiments. Our model addresses the electroweak naturalness problem, strong CP problem, baryon asymmetric Universe, and dark matter. Then, the model may give a new compelling paradigm of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Multiple Hierarchies from a Warped Extra Dimension

Theories beyond the Standard Model often contain mass scales hierarchically different from the electroweak scale and the Planck scale. It has been shown that such hierarchical mass scales can be realized as typical energy scales of multiple 3-branes in a 5D warped spacetime. We present a mechanism for stabilizing the intervals between the multiple 3-branes in the warped extra dimension, by introducing a single 5D scalar field with brane-localized potentials. We discuss the radion stabilization by solving the Einstein equation and the scalar field equation of motion so that a backreaction effect on the geometry due to the presence of the scalar field is taken into account. Perturbations from the background configuration are then considered with proper identification of multiple radion degrees of freedom. By solving their equations of motion, we compute the mass spectrum of the radion-scalar field system and the radion couplings to brane-localized matter fields, which are found to be suppressed by typical energy scales and radion profiles at the branes. We also compute the mass spectrum of Kaluza-Klein gravitons and their profiles in the extra dimension. Some applications of the setup are briefly described. Our analysis provides a solid ground to build 5D warped extra dimension models with multiple 3-branes.

Electroweak-like Baryogenesis with New Chiral Matter

We propose a framework where a phase transition associated with a gauge symmetry breaking that occurs (not far) above the electroweak scale sets a stage for baryogenesis similar to the electroweak baryogenesis in the Standard Model. A concrete realization utilizes the breaking of $SU(2)_R \times U(1)_X \rightarrow U(1)_Y$. New chiral fermions charged under the extended gauge symmetry have nonzero lepton numbers, which makes the $B-L$ symmetry anomalous. The new lepton sector contains a large flavor-dependent CP violation, similar to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase, without inducing sizable electric dipole moments of the Standard Model particles. A bubble wall dynamics associated with the first-order phase transition and $SU(2)_R$ sphaleron processes generate a lepton asymmetry, which is transferred into a baryon asymmetry via the ordinary electroweak sphaleron process. Unlike the Standard Model electroweak baryogenesis, the new phase transition can be of the strong first order and the new CP violation is not significantly suppressed by Yukawa couplings, so that the observed asymmetry can be produced. The model can be probed by collider searches for new particles and the observation of gravitational waves. One of the new leptons becomes a dark matter candidate. The model can be also embedded into a left-right symmetric theory to solve the strong CP problem.

High Quality Axion via a Doubly Composite Dynamics

We explore a new framework that furnishes a mechanism to simultaneously address the electroweak naturalness problem and the axion high quality problem. The framework is based on a doubly composite dynamics where the second confinement takes place after the CFT encounters the first confinement and the theory flows into another conformal fixed point. For a calculable example, we present a holographic dual description of the 4D model via a warped extra dimension model with three 3-branes. While the hierarchy problem is taken cared of by the localization of the Higgs fields on the TeV brane just as in the original Randall-Sundrum model, the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is realized as a gauge symmetry in the bulk of the extra dimension to solve the axion quality problem. We introduce a 5D scalar field whose potential at the intermediate brane drives spontaneous breaking of the PQ symmetry. Then, the PQ breaking scale is given by the scale of the intermediate brane and is naturally small compared to the Planck scale. The axion bulk profile is significantly suppressed around the UV brane, which protects the axion from gravitational violations of the PQ symmetry on the UV brane. Our model genuinely predicts the existence of the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the QCD axion at around the TeV scale and relatively light extra Higgs bosons.

Supersymmetric Alignment Models for $(g-2)_μ$

Hierarchical masses of quarks and leptons are addressed by imposing horizontal symmetries. In supersymmetric Standard Models, the same symmetries play a role in suppressing flavor violating processes induced by supersymmetric particles. Combining the idea of spontaneous CP violation to control contributions to electric dipole moments (EDMs), the mass scale of supersymmetric particles can be lowered. We present supersymmetric models with $U(1)$ horizontal symmetries and discuss CP and flavor constraints. Models with two $U(1)$ symmetries are found to give a viable solution to the muon $g-2$ anomaly. Interestingly, the parameter space to explain the anomaly will be probed by future electron EDM experiments.

Spontaneous CP Violation and Horizontal Symmetry in the MSSM: Toward Lepton Flavor Naturalness

We study the contributions of supersymmetric models with a $U(1)$ horizontal symmetry and only spontaneous CP breaking to various lepton flavor observables, such as $μ\to eγ$ and the electron electric dipole moment. We show that both a horizontal symmetry and a lack of explicit CP violation can alleviate the existing bounds from such observables. The undetermined $\mathcal{O}(1)$ coefficients in such mass matrix models muddle the interpretation of the bounds from various flavor observables. To overcome this, we define a new fine-tuning measure for different observables in such setups. This allows us to study how naturally the observed IR flavor observables can emerge from a given mass matrix model. We use our flavor-naturalness measure in study of our supersymmetric models and quantify the degree of fine tuning required by the bounds from various lepton flavor observables at each mass scale of sleptons, neutralinos, and charginos.

Axion Quality from Superconformal Dynamics

We discuss a possibility that a superconformal dynamics induces the emergence of a global $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry to solve the strong CP problem through the axion. Fields spontaneously breaking the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry couple to new quarks charged under the ordinary color $SU(3)_C$ and a new $SU(N)$ gauge group. The theory flows into an IR fixed point where the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking fields hold a large anomalous dimension leading to the suppression of $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$-violating higher dimensional operators. The spontaneous breaking of the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ makes the new quarks massive. The $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry is anomalous under the $SU(3)_C$ but not under the $SU(N)$ so that the axion couples to only the color $SU(3)_C$ and the usual axion potential is generated. We also comment on a model that the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking fields are realized as meson superfields in a new supersymmetric QCD.

A more attractive scheme for radion stabilization and supercooled phase transition

We propose a new radion stabilization mechanism in the Randall-Sundrum spacetime, introducing a bulk ${SU(N_H)}$ gauge field which confines at a TeV scale. It turns out that the radion is stabilized by the balance between a brane tension and a pressure due to the Casimir energy of the strong ${SU(N_H)}$ gauge field. We investigate the phase transition between the Randall-Sundrum (compactified) spacetime and a de-compactified spacetime and determine the parameter regime in which eternal (old) inflation is avoided and the phase transition can be completed. In comparison to the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, the 5D Planck mass can be larger than the AdS curvature and a classical description of the gravity is reliable in our stabilization mechanism. We also discuss the effect of the phase transition in cosmology such as an entropy dilution and a production of gravitational waves.

Gravitational Waves from Primordial Magnetic Fields via Photon-Graviton Conversion

We explore a novel process in the early Universe in which thermalized photons are converted into gravitons in the presence of strong primordial magnetic fields. It is found that the frequency of generated gravitational waves (GWs) is typically of order of GHz and their amplitude can be up to $ Ω_\mathrm{GW}h^2 \sim 10^{-10}$. If detected with future developments of the technology to explore this frequency region, the produced stochastic GW background enables us to know when and how strong the primordial magnetic fields are generated. From the peak frequency of the GWs, we can also probe the number of relativistic degrees of freedom at that time.

Implications of Gravitational Waves for Supersymmetric Grand Unification

Supersymmetric grand unification based on $SO(10)$ is one of the most attractive paradigms in physics beyond the Standard Model. Inspired by the recent NANOGrav signal, we discuss the implications of detecting a stochastic gravitational wave background emitted by a network of cosmic strings for the $SO(10)$ grand unification. Starting from a minimal model with multiple steps of symmetry breaking, we show that it generally prefers a high intermediate scale above $10^{14}\, \mathrm{GeV}$ that is favored by observable primordial gravitational waves. The observed spectrum can potentially narrow the possible range of the cosmic string scale and restricts the unified couplings and the unification scale by requiring gauge coupling unification. As an indirect consequence of the high cosmic string scale, the monopole abundance places non-trivial constraints on the theory. These are complementary to the proton decay constraints and probe different facets of supersymmetric $SO(10)$ unification theories.

Gravitational Waves and Dark Radiation from Dark Phase Transition: Connecting NANOGrav Pulsar Timing Data and Hubble Tension

Recent pulsar timing data reported by the NANOGrav collaboration may indicate the existence of a stochastic gravitational wave background around $f \sim 10^{-8}$ Hz. We explore a possibility to generate such low-frequency gravitational waves from a dark sector phase transition. Assuming that the dark sector is completely decoupled from the visible sector except via the gravitational interaction, we find that some amount of dark radiation should remain until present. The NANOGrav data implies that the amount of dark radiation is close to the current upper bound, which may help mitigate the so-called Hubble tension. If the existence of dark radiation is not confirmed in the future CMB-S4 experiment, it would imply the existence of new particles feebly interacting with the standard model sector at an energy scale of O(1-100) MeV.

Inelastic Dark Matter Electron Scattering and the XENON1T Excess

Detection of electron recoils by dark matter (DM) may reveal the structure of the dark sector. We consider a scenario where a heavier DM particle inelastically scatters off an electron and is converted into a lighter DM particle. A small mass difference between the two DM particles is transferred into electron recoil energy. We investigate the DM-electron interaction mediated by a massive dark photon and evaluate the inelastic DM scattering rate, taking account of the atomic structure. It is found that the scattering rate is significantly enhanced because of the small mass splitting, which allows for a small momentum transfer matched with the size of the electron wave function. We show that there exists a viable parameter space which explains the excess of electron recoil events around 2-3 keV recently reported by the XENON1T experiment.

Light Dark Photon Dark Matter from Inflation

We discuss the possibility of producing a light dark photon dark matter through a coupling between the dark photon field and the inflaton. The dark photon with a large wavelength is efficiently produced due to the inflaton motion during inflation and becomes non-relativistic before the time of matter-radiation equality. We compute the amount of production analytically. The correct relic abundance is realized with a dark photon mass extending down to $10^{-21} \, \rm eV$.

Strange Jet Tagging

Tagging jets of strongly interacting particles initiated by energetic strange quarks is one of the few largely unexplored Standard Model object classification problems remaining in high energy collider physics. In this paper we investigate the purest version of this classification problem in the form of distinguishing strange-quark jets from down-quark jets. Our strategy relies on the fact that a strange-quark jet contains on average a higher ratio of neutral kaon energy to neutral pion energy than does a down-quark jet. Long-lived neutral kaons deposit energy mainly in the hadronic calorimeter of a high energy detector, while neutral pions decay promptly to photons that deposit energy mainly in the electromagnetic calorimeter. In addition, short-lived neutral kaons that decay in flight to charged pion pairs can be identified as a secondary vertex in the inner tracking system. Using these handles we study different approaches to distinguishing strange-quark from down-quark jets, including single variable cut-based methods, a boosted decision tree (BDT) with a small number of simple variables, and a deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture with jet images. We show that modest gains are possible from the CNN compared with the BDT or a single variable. Starting from jet samples with only strange-quark and down-quark jets, the CNN algorithm can improve the strange to down ratio by a factor of roughly 2 for strange tagging efficiencies below 0.2, and by a factor of 2.5 for strange tagging efficiencies near 0.02.

Interpreting the Electron EDM Constraint

The ACME collaboration has recently announced a new constraint on the electron EDM, $|d_e| < 1.1 \times 10^{-29}\, e\, {\rm cm}$, from measurements of the ThO molecule. This is a powerful constraint on CP-violating new physics: even new physics generating the EDM at two loops is constrained at the multi-TeV scale. We interpret the bound in the context of different scenarios for new physics: a general order-of-magnitude analysis for both the electron EDM and the CP-odd electron-nucleon coupling; 1-loop SUSY, probing sleptons above 10 TeV; 2-loop SUSY, probing multi-TeV charginos or stops; and finally, new physics that generates the EDM via the charm quark or top quark Yukawa couplings. In the last scenario, new physics generates a "QULE operator" $(q_f \barσ^{μν}{\bar u}_f) \cdot (\ell {\barσ}_{μν} {\bar e})$, which in turn generates the EDM through RG evolution. If the QULE operator is generated at tree level, this corresponds to a previously studied leptoquark model. For the first time, we also classify scenarios in which the QULE operator is generated at one loop through a box diagram, which include SUSY and leptoquark models. The electron EDM bound is the leading constraint on a wide variety of theories of CP-violating new physics interacting with the Higgs boson or the top quark. We argue that any future nonzero measurement of an electron EDM will provide a strong motivation for constructing new colliders at the highest feasible energies.

Dyonic Catalysis in the KPV Vacuum Decay

We investigate catalysis induced by a dyonic impurity in the metastable vacuum studied by Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde, which can be relevant to vacuum decay in the KKLT scenario. The impurity is a D3-brane wrapping on $ \mathbb{S}^3$ in the Klebanov-Strassler geometry. The effect of the D3-brane can be encoded in the world-volume theory of an NS5-brane as an electromagnetic field on it. As the field strength becomes large, instability of the vacuum enhances. As a result, the lifetime of the metastable vacuum becomes drastically shorter.

Phase Transitions in Twin Higgs Models

We study twin Higgs models at non-zero temperature and discuss cosmological phase transitions as well as their implications on electroweak baryogenesis and gravitational waves. It is shown that the expectation value of the Higgs field at the critical temperature of the electroweak phase transition is much smaller than the critical temperature, which indicates two important facts: (i) the electroweak phase transition cannot be analyzed perturbatively (ii) the electroweak baryogenesis is hardly realized in the typical realizations of twin Higgs models. We also analyze the phase transition associated with the global symmetry breaking, through which the Standard Model Higgs is identified with one of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons in terms of its linear realization, with and without supersymmetry. For this phase transition, we show that, only in the supersymmetric case, there are still some parameter spaces, in which the perturbative approach is validated and the phase transition is the first order. We find that the stochastic gravitational wave background is generated through this first order phase transition, but it is impossible to be detected by DECIGO or BBO in the linear realization and the decoupling limit. The detection of stochastic gravitational wave background with the feature of first order phase transition, therefore, will give strong constraints on twin Higgs models.
