Compactification of the isospectral varieties of nilpotent Toda lattices

The paper concerns a compactification of the isospectral varieties of nilpotent Toda lattices for real split simple Lie algebras. The compactification is obtained by taking the closure of unipotent group orbits in the flag manifolds. The unipotent group orbits are called the Peterson varieties and can be used in the complex case to describe the quantum cohomology of Grassmannian manifolds. We construct a chain complex based on a cell decomposition consisting of the subsystems of Toda lattices. Explicit formulae for the incidence numbers of the chain complex are found, and encoded in a graph containing an edge whenever an incidence number is non-zero. We then compute rational cohomology, and show that there are just three different patterns in the calculation of Betti numbers. Although these compactified varieties are singular, they resemble certain smooth Schubert varieties e.g. they both have a cell decomposition consiting of unipotent group orbits of the same dimensions. In particular, for the case of a Lie algebra of type $A$ the rational homology/cohomology obtained from the compactified isospectral variety of the nilpotent Toda lattice equals that of the corresponding Schubert variety.

On a family of solutions of the KP equation which also satisfy the Toda lattice hierarchy

We describe the interaction pattern in the $x$-$y$ plane for a family of soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, $(-4u_{t}+u_{xxx}+6uu_x)_{x}+3u_{yy}=0$. Those solutions also satisfy the finite Toda lattice hierarchy. We determine completely their asymptotic patterns for $y\to \pm\infty$, and we show that all the solutions (except the one-soliton solution) are of {\it resonant} type, consisting of arbitrary numbers of line solitons in both aymptotics; that is, arbitrary $N_-$ incoming solitons for $y\to -\infty$ interact to form arbitrary $N_+$ outgoing solitons for $y\to\infty$. We also discuss the interaction process of those solitons, and show that the resonant interaction creates a {\it web-like} structure having $(N_--1)(N_+-1)$ holes.

The Whitham Equations for Optical Communications: Mathematical Theory of NRZ

We present a model of optical communication system for high-bit-rate data transmission in the nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) format over transoceanic distance. The system operates in a small group velocity dispersion regime, and the model equation is given by the Whitham equations describing the slow modulation of multi-phase wavetrains of the (defocusing) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The model equation is of hyperbolic type, and certain initial NRZ pulse with phase modulation develops a shock. We then show how one can obtain a global solution by choosing an appropriate Riemann surface on which the Whitham equation is defined. The present analysis may be interpreted as an alternative to the method of inverse scattering transformation for the NLS solitons. We also discuss wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) in the NRZ format by using the Whitham equation for a coupled NLS equation, and show that there exists a hydro-dynamic-type instability between channels.

Toda lattices with indefinite metric II: Topology of the iso-spectral manifolds

We consider the iso-spectral real manifolds of tridiagonal Hessenberg matrices with real eigenvalues. The manifolds are described by the iso-spectral flows of indefinite Toda lattice equations introduced by the authors [Physica, 91D (1996), 321-339]. These Toda lattices consist of $2^{N-1}$ different systems with hamiltonians $H = (1/2) \sum_{k=1}^{N} y_k^2 + \sum_{k=1}^{N-1} s_ks_{k+1} \exp(x_k-x_{k+1})$, where $s_i=\pm 1$. We compactify the manifolds by adding infinities according to the Toda flows which blow up in finite time except the case with all $s_is_{i+1}=1$. The resulting manifolds are shown to be nonorientable for $N>2$, and the symmetric group is the semi-direct product of $(\ZZ_2)^{N-1}$ and the permutation group $S_N$. These properties identify themselves with ``small covers'' introduced by Davis and Januszkiewicz [Duke Mathematical Journal, 62 (1991), 417-451]. As a corollary of our construction, we give a formula on the total numbers of zeroes for a system of exponential polynomials generated as Hankel determinant.

Iso-spectral deformations of general matrix and their reductions on Lie algebras

We study an iso-spectral deformation of general matrix which is a natural generalization of the Toda lattice equation. We prove the integrability of the deformation, and give an explicit formula for the solution to the initial value problem. The formula is obtained by generalizing the orthogonalization procedure of Szegö. Based on the root spaces for simple Lie algebras, we consider several reductions of the hierarchy. These include not only the integrable systems studied by Bogoyavlensky and Kostant, but also their generalizations which were not known to be integrable before. The behaviors of the solutions are also studied. Generically, there are two types of solutions, having either sorting property or blowing up to infinity in finite time.

Topological Landau-Ginzburg theory with a rational potential and the dispersionless KP hierarchy

Based on the dispersionless KP (dKP) theory, we give a comprehensive study of the topological Landau-Ginzburg (LG) theory characterized by a rational potential. Writing the dKP hierarchy in a general form, we find that the hierarchy naturally includes the dispersionless (continuous) limit of Toda hierarchy and its generalizations having finite number of primaries. Several flat solutions of the topological LG theory are obtained in this formulation, and are identified with those discussed by Dubrovin. We explicitly construct gravitational descendants for all the primary fields. Giving a residue formula for the 3-point functions of the fields, we show that these 3-point functions satisfy the topological recursion relation. The string equation is obtained as the generalized hodograph solutions of the dKP hierarchy, which show that all the gravitational effects to the constitutive equations (2-point functions) can be renormalized into the coupling constants in the small phase space.

Toda Hierarchy with Indefinite Metric

We consider a generalization of the full symmetric Toda hierarchy where the matrix $\tilde {L}$ of the Lax pair is given by $\tilde {L}=LS$, with a full symmetric matrix $L$ and a nondegenerate diagonal matrix $S$. The key feature of the hierarchy is that the inverse scattering data includes a class of noncompact groups of matrices, such as $O(p,q)$. We give an explicit formula for the solution to the initial value problem of this hierarchy. The formula is obtained by generalizing the orthogonalization procedure of Szegö, or the QR factorization method of Symes. The behaviors of the solutions are also studied. Generically, there are two types of solutions, having either sorting property or blowing up to infinity in finite time. The $τ$-function structure for the tridiagonal hierarchy is also studied.

Normal Form, Symmetry and Infinite Dimensional Lie Algebra for System of Ode's

The normal form for a system of ode's is constructed from its polynomial symmetries of the linear part of the system, which is assumed to be semi-simple. The symmetries are shown to have a simple structure such as invariant function times symmetries of degree one called basic symmetries. We also show that the set of symmetries naturally forms an infinite dimensional Lie algebra graded by the degree of invariant polynomials. This implies that if this algebra is non-commutative then the method of multiple scales with more than two scaling variables fails to apply.
