Orphan GRB afterglow searches with the Pan-STARRS1 COSMOS survey

We present the result of a search for orphan Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows in the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) COSMOS survey. There is extensive theoretical and observational evidence suggesting that GRBs are collimated jets; the direct observation of orphan GRB afterglows would further support this model. An optimal survey strategy is designed by coupling the PS1 survey with the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The PS1 COSMOS survey, one of the survey fields in the PS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1/MDS), searches a field of 7 deg$^2$ from December 2011 to January 2014, reaching a limiting magnitude R $\sim$ 23. The dense cadence of PS1/MDS is crucial for identifying transients, and the deep magnitude reached by the HSC survey (R $\sim$ 26) is important for evaluating potential GRB hosts. A transient classification method is employed to select potential orphan GRB afterglow candidates. After a thorough analysis of the transient and host galaxy properties, we conclude that there are no candidates in this survey field. The null result implies that the consideration of jet structures is essential for further orphan GRB afterglow surveys.

Properties of environment around AGN and luminous galaxy pairs through HSC wide survey

We investigated the properties of AGN environments, particularly environments where the association of luminous galaxies (LGs) is found within 4~Mpc from AGNs with redshifts of 0.8 -- 1.1. For comparison, three additional AGN environments, (namely, AGNs of all types, type~1 AGNs with X-ray and/or radio detection, and type~2 AGNs) and an environment of blue $M_{*}$, characteristic luminosity of the Schechter function, galaxies were investigated. The cross-correlation function with the surrounding galaxies was measured and compared between the AGN and blue galaxy samples. We also compared the distributions of color, absolute magnitude, and stellar mass of the galaxies around such target objects. The properties of clusters detected using surrounding galaxies selected based on a photometric redshift were examined and compared for different samples. The target AGNs were drawn from the Million Quasars (MILLIQUAS) catalog, and the blue galaxies were drawn from six redshift survey catalogs (SDSS, WiggleZ, DEEP2, VVDS, VIPERS, and PRIMUS). The galaxies used as a measure of the environment around the targets are drawn from S18a internal data released by the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). We found that, among the five AGN and blue galaxy samples considered, the environment of AGN-LG pairs is the most enriched with luminous galaxies. We also found an enhancement in the number of mass-selected clusters in the AGN-LG pair sample against those in the other samples. The results obtained in this study indicate that existence of multiple clusters is the major driver in the association of AGNs and LGs, rather than a single large-mass dark matter halo hosting the AGN.

Clustering of galaxies around AGN in the HSC Wide survey

We have measured the clustering of galaxies around active galactic nuclei (AGN) for which single-epoch virial masses of the super-massive black hole (SMBH) are available to investigate the relation between the large scale environment of AGNs and the evolution of SMBHs. The AGN samples used in this work were derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) observations and the galaxy samples were from 240~deg$^{2}$ S15b data of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). The investigated redshift range is 0.6--3.0, and the masses of the SMBHs lie in the range $10^{7.5}$--$10^{10}$~M$_{\odot}$. The absolute magnitude of the galaxy samples reaches to $M_{λ310}$ $\sim$ $-$18 at rest frame wavelength 310~nm for the low-redshift end of the samples. More than 70\% of the galaxies in the analysis are blue. We found a significant dependence of the cross-correlation length on redshift, which primarily reflects the brightness dependence of the galaxy clustering. At the lowest redshifts the cross-correlation length increases from 7~$h^{-1}$~Mpc around $M_{λ310}$$ = $$-19$~mag to $>$10~$h^{-1}$~Mpc beyond $M_{λ310}$$ = $$-20$~mag. No significant dependence of the cross-correlation length on BH mass was found for whole galaxy samples dominated by blue galaxies, while there was an indication of BH mass dependence in the cross-correlation with red galaxies. These results provides a picture of the environment of AGNs studied in this paper being enriched with blue starforming galaxies, and a fraction of the galaxies are being evolved to red galaxies along with the evolution of SMBHs in that system.

Clustering of quasars in a wide luminosity range at redshift 4 with Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam wide field imaging

We examine the clustering of quasars over a wide luminosity range, by utilizing 901 quasars at $\overline{z}_{\rm phot}\sim3.8$ with $-24.73<M_{\rm 1450}<-22.23$ photometrically selected from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) S16A Wide2 date release and 342 more luminous quasars at $3.4<z_{\rm spec}<4.6$ having $-28.0<M_{\rm 1450}<-23.95$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) that fall in the HSC survey fields. We measure the bias factors of two quasar samples by evaluating the cross-correlation functions (CCFs) between the quasar samples and 25790 bright $z\sim4$ Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in $M_{\rm 1450}<-21.25$ photometrically selected from the HSC dataset. Over an angular scale of \timeform{10.0"} to \timeform{1000.0"}, the bias factors are $5.93^{+1.34}_{-1.43}$ and $2.73^{+2.44}_{-2.55}$ for the low and high luminosity quasars, respectively, indicating no luminosity dependence of quasar clustering at $z\sim4$. It is noted that the bias factor of the luminous quasars estimated by the CCF is smaller than that estimated by the auto-correlation function (ACF) over a similar redshift range, especially on scales below \timeform{40.0"}. Moreover, the bias factor of the less-luminous quasars implies the minimal mass of their host dark matter halos (DMHs) is $0.3$-$2\times10^{12}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, corresponding to a quasar duty cycle of $0.001$-$0.06$.

Properties of Galaxies around AGNs with Most Massive Supermassive Black Hole Revealed by the Clustering Analysis

We present results of the clustering analysis between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies at redshift 0.1-1.0 for investigating properties of galaxies associated with the AGNs, revealing the nature of fueling mechanism of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We used 8059 SDSS AGNs/QSOs for which virial masses of individual SMBHs were measured, and divided them into four mass groups. Cross-correlation analysis was performed and bias for each mass group was derived. The averaged color and luminosity distributions of galaxies around the AGNs/QSOs were also derived for each mass group. The galaxy color was estimated for SED constructed from a merged SDSS and UKIDSS catalog. The distributions of color and luminosity were derived by the subtraction method, which does not require redshift information of galaxies. The main results of this work are: (1) a bias increases by a factor two from the lower mass group to the highest mass group; (2) the environment around AGNs with the most massive SMBH (Mbh > 10^9 Msun) is dominated by red sequence galaxies; (3) marginal indication of decline in luminosity function at dimmer side of M > -19.5 mag is found for galaxies around AGNs with Mbh = 10^8.2 - 10^9 Msun and nearest redshift group (z=0.1-0.3). These results indicate that AGNs with the most massive SMBHs reside in haloes where large fraction of galaxies have been transited to the red sequence. The accretion of hot halo gas as well as recycled gas from evolving stars can be the most plausible mechanism to fuel the SMBHs above ~10^9 Msun.

Blade Runner -What kind objects are there in the JVO ALMA Archive?-

The JVO ALMA Archive provides users one of the easiest ways to access the ALMA archival data. The users can have a quick look at a 3 or 4-dimensional data cube without downloading multiple huge tarballs from a science portal of ALMA Regional Centers (ARCs). Since we just synchronize all datasets with those of ARCs, the metadata are identical to the upstream, including ``target name'' for each dataset. The name is not necessarily a common one like NGC numbers, but sometimes one of sequential numbers assigned in an observation proposal. Compilation of these artificial names into astronomical ones could provide users more flexible and powerful search interfaces; for instance, with the knowledge of the redshift for each source, the users can easily find the datasets which observed their interested emission/absorption lines at not the observer frame but the rest frame, fitting well with theoretical studies. To implement this functionality, cross-identification of all the sources in our archive with those in some other astronomical databases such as NED and SIMBAD is required. We developed a tiny Java application named ``Blade Runner'' for this purpose. The program works as a crawler for both the JVO ALMA Archive and SIMBAD, storing all information onto a SQLite-based database file; this portable design enables us to communicate results to each other even under different computing environments. In this paper, we introduce its software design and our recent work on the application, and report a preliminary result on the source identification in our archive.

A Cross-correlation Analysis of AGN and Galaxies using Virtual Observatory: Dependence on Virial Mass of Super-Massive Black Hole

We present results of the cross-correlation analysis between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies at redshift 0.1-1. We obtain data of ~10,000 SDSS AGNs in which their virial masses with a super-massive black hole (SMBH) were estimated. The UKIDSS galaxy samples around the AGNs were obtained using the virtual observatory. The scale length of AGN-galaxy cross-correlation for all of the samples is measured to be r_0= 5.8+0.8-0.6 h^-1Mpc (for the fixed slope parameter γ=1.8). We also derived a dependence of r_0 on the BH mass, M_BH, and found an indication of an increasing trend of r_0 at M_BH > 10^8 Msun. It is suggested that the growth of SMBH is mainly driven by interactions with the surrounding environment for M_BH > 10^8 Msun. On the other hand, at M_BH <~10^8 Msun, we did not find the BH mass dependence. This would imply that, for less massive BHs, the mass growth process can be different from that for massive BHs.

Prototype Implementation of Web and Desktop Applications for ALMA Science Verification Data and the Lessons Learned

ALMA is estimated to generate TB scale data during only one observation; astronomers manage to identify which part of the data they are really interested in. Now we have been developing new GUI software for this purpose utilizing the VO interface: ALMA Web Quick Look System (ALMAWebQL) and ALMA Desktop Application (Vissage). The former is written in JavaScript and HTML5 generated from Java codes by Google Web Toolkit, and the latter is in pure Java. An essential point of our approach is how to reduce network traffic: we prepare, in advance, "compressed" FITS files of 2x2x1 (horizontal, vertical, and spectral directions, respectively) binning, 2x2x2 binning, 4x4x2 binning data, and so on. These files are hidden from users, and Web QL automatically choose proper one by each user operation. Through this work, we find that network traffic in our system is still a bottleneck towards TB scale data distribution. Hence we have to develop alternative data containers for much faster data processing. In this paper, I introduce our data analysis systems, and describe what we learned through the development.

This document describes the Astronomical Data Query Language (ADQL). ADQL has been developed based on SQL92. This document describes the subset of the SQL grammar supported by ADQL. Special restrictions and extensions to SQL92 have been defined in order to support generic and astronomy specific operations.

Early Science Result from the Japanese Virtual Observatory: AGN and Galaxy Clustering at z = 0.3 to 3.0

We present the result of projected cross correlation analysis of AGNs and galaxies at redshifts from 0.3 to 3.0. The Japanese Virtual Observatory (JVO) was used to obtain the Subaru Suprime-Cam images and UKIDSS catalog data around AGNs. We investigated 1,809 AGNs, which is about ten times larger a sample than that used in previous studies on AGN-galaxy clustering at redshifts larger than 0.6. 90% of the AGN samples are optically-selected AGN from the SDSS and 2dF catalogs. The galaxy samples at low redshift includes many redder objects from UKIDSS survey, while at higher redshift they are mainly blue galaxies from Suprime-Cam. We found significant excess of galaxies around the AGNs at redshifts from 0.3 to 1.8. For the low redshift samples ($z<0.9$), we obtained correlation length of $r_{0} = $5--6 $h^{-1}$Mpc ($γ= 1.8$), which indicates that the AGNs at this redshift range reside in a similar environment around typical local galaxies. We also found that AGNs at higher redshift ranges reside in a denser environment than lower redshift AGNs; For $z=1.3 \sim 1.8$ AGNs, the cross correlation length was measured as 11$^{+6}_{-3}$ $h^{-1}$Mpc ($γ=1.8$). Considering that our galaxies sample is based on optical observations with Suprime-Cam at the redshift range, it is expected that blue star-forming galaxies comprise the majority of objects that are observed to be clustered around the AGNs. It is successfully demonstrated that the use of the archive through the Virtual Observatory system can provide a powerful tool for investigating the small scale environment of the intermediate redshift AGNs.

Multiple Component Analysis of Time Resolved Spectra of GRB041006: A Clue to the Nature of Underlying Soft Component of GRBs

GRB 041006 was detected by HETE-2 at 12:18:08 UT on 06 October 2004. This GRB displays a soft X-ray emission, a precursor before the onset of the main event, and also a soft X-ray tail after the end of the main peak. The light curves in four different energy bands display different features; At higher energy bands several peaks are seen in the light curve, while at lower energy bands a single broader bump dominates. It is expected that these different features are the result of a mixture of several components each of which has different energetics and variability. To reveal the nature of each component, we analysed the time resolved spectra and they are successfully resolved into several components. We also found that these components can be classified into two distinct classes; One is a component which has an exponential decay of $E_{p}$ with a characteristic timescale shorter than $\sim$ 30 sec, and its spectrum is well represented by a broken power law function, which is frequently observed in many prompt GRB emissions, so it should have an internal-shock origin. Another is a component whose $E_{p}$ is almost unchanged with characteristic timescale longer than $\sim$ 60 sec, and shows a very soft emission and slower variability. The spectrum of the soft component is characterized by either a broken power law or a black body spectrum. This component might originate from a relatively wider and lower velocity jet or a photosphere of the fireball. By assuming that the soft component is a thermal emission, the radiation radius is initially $4.4 \times 10^{6}$ km, which is a typical radius of a blue supergiant, and its expansion velocity is $2.4 \times 10^{5}$ km/s in the source frame.

A Comprehensive Study of Short Bursts from SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 Detected by HETE-2

We present the results of temporal and spectral studies of the short burst (less than a few hundred milliseconds) from the soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) 1806-20 and 1900+14 using the HETE-2 samples. In five years from 2001 to 2005, HETE-2 detected 50 bursts which were localized to SGR 1806-20 and 5 bursts which were localized to SGR 1900+14. Especially SGR 1806-20 was active in 2004, and HETE-2 localized 33 bursts in that year. The cumulative number-intensity distribution of SGR 1806-20 in 2004 is well described by a power law model with an index of -1.1+/-0.6. It is consistent with previous studies but burst data taken in other years clearly give a steeper distribution. This may suggest that more energetic bursts could occur more frequently in periods of greater activity. A power law cumulative number-intensity distribution is also known for earthquakes and solar flares. It may imply analogous triggering mechanisms. Although spectral evolution during bursts with a time scale of > 20 ms is not common in the HETE-2 sample, spectral softening due to the very rapid (< a few milliseconds) energy reinjection and cooling may not be excluded. The spectra of all short bursts are well reproduced by a two blackbody function (2BB) with temperatures ~4 and ~11 keV. From the timing analysis of the SGR 1806-20 data, a time lag of 2.2+/-0.4 ms is found between the 30-100 keV and 2-10 keV radiation bands. This may imply (1) a very rapid spectral softening and energy reinjection, (2) diffused (elongated) emission plasma along the magnetic field lines in pseudo equilibrium with multi-temperatures, or (3) a separate (located at < 700 km) emission region of softer component (say, ~4 keV) which could be reprocessed X-rays by higher energy (> 11 keV) photons from an emission region near the stellar surface.

HETE-2 Observations of the X-Ray Flash XRF 040916

A long X-ray flash was detected and localized by the instruments aboard the High Energy Transient Explorer II (HETE-2) at 00:03:30 UT on 2004 September 16. The position was reported to the GRB Coordinates Network (GCN) approximately 2 hours after the burst. This burst consists of two peaks separated by 200 s, with durations of 110 s and 60 s. We have analyzed the energy spectra of the 1st and 2nd peaks observed with the Wide Field X-Ray Monitor (WXM) and the French Gamma Telescope (FREGATE). We discuss the origin of the 2nd peak in terms of flux variabilities and timescales. We find that it is most likely part of the prompt emission, and is explained by the long-acting engine model. This feature is similar to some bright X-ray flares detected in the early afterglow phase of bursts observed by the Swift satellite.

Constructing the Subaru Advanced Data and Analysis Service on VO

We present our activity on making the Subaru Data Archive accessible through the Japanese Virtual Observatory (JVO) system. There are a lot of demand to use the archived Subaru data from various fields of astronomers. To be used by those who are not familiar with the way to reduce the Subaru data, the data reduction should be made before providing for them, or at least it should be easily done without precise knowledge about instrument's characteristic and environment where data are taken. For those purposes, data quality assessment system NAQATA is developed, which is presented in this meeting by Nakata et al. (2006), and the science-ready image data are provided for some of the SuprimeCam data at SMOKA data service which is presented by Enoki et al (2006). JVO portal will provide the way to access the reduce data, and also provides the way to reduce from raw data with very few efforts through the user-friendly web browser I/F. To provide such a CPU-intensive service, we have developed a GRID computing system. The architecture of this Subaru Data and Analysis system are discussed.

An Optically Dark GRB Observed by HETE-2: GRB 051022

GRB 051022 was detected at 13:07:58 on 22 October 2005 by HETE-2. The location of GRB 051022 was determined immediately by the flight localization system. This burst contains multiple pulses and has a rather long duration of about 190 seconds. The detections of candidate X-ray and radio afterglows were reported, whereas no optical afterglow was found. The optical spectroscopic observations of the host galaxy revealed the redshift z = 0.8. Using the data derived by HETE-2 observation of the prompt emission, we found the absorption N_H = 8.8 -2.9/+3.1 x 10^22 cm^-2 and the visual extinction A_V = 49 -16/+17 mag in the host galaxy. If this is the case, no detection of any optical transient would be quite reasonable. The absorption derived by the Swift XRT observations of the afterglow is fully consistent with those obtained from the early HETE-2 observation of the prompt emission. Our analysis implies an interpretation that the absorbing medium could be outside external shock at R ~ 10^16 cm, which may be a dusty molecular cloud.

Structured Query Language for Virtual Observatory

Currently two query languages are defined as standards for the Virtual Observatory (VO). Astronomical Data Query Language (ADQL) is used for catalog data query and Simple Image Access Protocol (SIAP) is for image data query. As a result, when we query each data service, we need to know in advance which language is supported and then construct a query language accordingly. The construct of SIAP is simple, but they have a limited capability. For example, there is no way to specify multiple regions in one query, and it is difficult to specify complex query conditions. In this paper, we propose a unified query language for any kind of astronomical database on the basis of SQL99. SQL is a query language optimized for a table data, so to apply the SQL to the image and spectrum data set, the data structure need to be mapped to a table like structure. We present specification of this query language and an example of the architecture for the database system.

Searching for a Long Cosmic String Through the Gravitational Lensing Effect

It has been suggested that cosmic strings produced at a phase transition in the early universe can be the origin of the extremely high energy cosmic rays (EHCR) observed by AGASA above 10^20 eV. Superheavy cosmic strings with linear mass density of 10^22 g/cm can be indirectly observed through the gravitational lensing effect the distant galaxies. The lensing effect by a long straight object can be characterized by a line of double galaxies or quasars with angular separation of about 5 arcsec. We have searched for aligned double objects from the archived data taken by the Subaru Prime Focus Camera (Suprime-Cam). The Suprime-Cam has a great advantage in observing the wide field of view (30x30 arcmin^2) with high sensitivity (R<26 400s exposure), so it is suitable for this research. In this paper, we describe the result of simulation study for developing the method of searching the objects lensed by cosmic strings, and present the observational result obtained by this method.
