Non-invertible symmetries act locally by quantum operations

Non-invertible symmetries of quantum field theories and many-body systems generalize the concept of symmetries by allowing non-invertible operations in addition to more ordinary invertible ones described by groups. The aim of this paper is to point out that these non-invertible symmetries act on local operators by quantum operations, i.e. completely positive maps between density matrices, which form a natural class of operations containing both unitary evolutions and measurements and play an important role in quantum information theory. This observation will be illustrated by the Kramers--Wannier duality of the one-dimensional quantum Ising chain, which is a prototypical example of non-invertible symmetry operations.

Lectures on 4d N=1 dynamics and related topics

This lecture series consists of mostly independent three parts: Part 1: a tour of basic 4d N=1 supersymmetric dynamics, covering the pure super Yang-Mills, the Seiberg duality for classical groups, the supersymmetric index on S^3, and the a-maximization. Part 2: a brief look at 2d N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) dynamics, covering the Landau-Ginzburg and Calabi-Yau models, the elliptic genera on T^2, and the triality of Gadde-Gukov-Putrov. Appendix: a review of basic properties of supersymmetries in various dimensions. Part of the content is based on an unpublished collaboration with F. Yagi and another with K. Kikuchi.

Classification of chiral fermionic CFTs of central charge $\le 16$

We classify two-dimensional purely chiral conformal field theories which are defined on two-dimensional surfaces equipped with spin structure and have central charge less than or equal to 16, and discuss their duality webs. This result can be used to confirm that the list of non-supersymmetric ten-dimensional heterotic string theories found in the late 1980s is complete and does not miss any exotic example.

On a class of selection rules without group actions in field theory and string theory

We discuss a class of selection rules which i) do not come from group actions on fields, ii) are exact at tree level in perturbation theory, iii) are increasingly violated as the loop order is raised, and iv) eventually reduce to selection rules associated with an ordinary group symmetry. We start from basic field-theoretical examples in which fields are labeled by conjugacy classes rather than representations of a group, and discuss generalizations using fusion algebras or hypergroups. We also discuss how such selection rules arise naturally in string theory, such as for non-Abelian orbifolds or other cases with non-invertible worldsheet symmetries.

S-folds and 4d N=3 superconformal field theories

S-folds are generalizations of orientifolds in type IIB string theory, such that the geometric identifications are accompanied by non-trivial S-duality transformations. They were recently used by Garcia-Etxebarria and Regalado to provide the first construction of four dimensional N=3 superconformal theories. In this note, we classify the different variants of these N=3 preserving S-folds, distinguished by an analog of discrete torsion, using both a direct analysis of the different torsion classes and the compactification of the S-folds to three dimensional M-theory backgrounds. Upon adding D3-branes, these variants lead to different classes of N=3 superconformal field theories. We also analyze the holographic duals of these theories, and in particular clarify the role of discrete gauge and global symmetries in holography. In the main part of the paper, certain properties of cohomology groups associated to the S-folds were conjectured and used. This arXiv version includes an appendix written by Kiyonori Gomi in 2023 providing the proofs of the required properties using the technique of Borel equivariant cohomology, whose brief review is also provided.

Asymptotic density of states in 2d CFTs with non-invertible symmetries

It is known that the asymptotic density of states of a 2d CFT in an irreducible representation $ρ$ of a finite symmetry group $G$ is proportional to $(\dimρ)^2$. We show how this statement can be generalized when the symmetry can be non-invertible and is described by a fusion category $\mathcal{C}$. Along the way, we explain what plays the role of a representation of a group in the case of a fusion category symmetry; the answer to this question is already available in the broader mathematical physics literature but not yet widely known in hep-th. This understanding immediately implies a selection rule on the correlation functions, and also allows us to derive the asymptotic density.

Topological modular forms and the absence of all heterotic global anomalies

We reformulate the question of the absence of global anomalies of heterotic string theory mathematically in terms of a certain natural transformation $\mathrm{TMF}^\bullet\to (I_{\mathbb{Z}}Ω^\text{string})^{\bullet-20}$, from topological modular forms to the Anderson dual of string bordism groups, using the Segal-Stolz-Teichner conjecture. We will show that this natural transformation vanishes, implying that heterotic global anomalies are always absent. The fact that $\mathrm{TMF}^{21}(\mathrm{pt})=0$ plays an important role in the process. Along the way, we also discuss how the twists of $\mathrm{TMF}$ can be described under the Segal-Stolz-Teichner conjecture, by using the result of Freed and Hopkins concerning anomalies of quantum field theories. The paper contains separate introductions for mathematicians and for string theorists, in the hope of making the content more accessible to a larger audience. The sections are also demarcated cleanly into mathematically rigorous parts and those which are not.

Non-supersymmetric heterotic branes

The common statement that any consistent quantum gravity theory contains dynamical objects with all possible charges suggests that there are still a number of hitherto-unidentified branes in string theory. Here we give the exact worldsheet description of near-horizon limits of non-supersymmetric $p$-branes in ten-dimensional $\mathrm{Spin}(32)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ or $(E_8 \times E_8) \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic superstring theories for $p=7,6,4,0$.

The ABCDEFG of Instantons and W-algebras

For arbitrary gauge groups, we check at the one-instanton level that the Nekrasov partition function of pure N=2 super Yang-Mills is equal to the norm of a certain coherent state of the corresponding W-algebra. For non-simply-laced gauge groups, we confirm in particular that the coherent state is in the twisted sector of a simply-laced W-algebra.

On ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetry enhancements in three dimensions

We introduce a class of 3d theories consisting of strongly-coupled ${\mathcal N}=4$ systems coupled to ${\mathcal N}=3$ Chern-Simons gauge multiplets, which exhibit ${\mathcal N}=4$ enhancements when a peculiar condition on the Chern-Simons levels is met. An example is the $SU(N)^3$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to the 3d $T_N$ theory, which enhances to ${\mathcal N}=4$ when $1/k_1+1/k_2+1/k_3=0$. We also show that some but not all of these ${\mathcal N}=4$ enhancements can be understood by considering M5-branes on a special class of Seifert manifolds. Our construction provides a large class of ${\mathcal N}=4$ theories which have not been studied previously.

Reading between the lines of four-dimensional gauge theories

Starting with a choice of a gauge group in four dimensions, there is often freedom in the choice of magnetic and dyonic line operators. Different consistent choices of these operators correspond to distinct physical theories, with the same correlation functions of local operators in R^4. In some cases these choices are permuted by shifting the theta-angle by 2pi. In other cases they are labeled by new discrete theta-like parameters. Using this understanding we gain new insight into the dynamics of four-dimensional gauge theories and their phases. The existence of these distinct theories clarifies a number of issues in electric/magnetic dualities of supersymmetric gauge theories, both for the conformal N=4 theories and for the low-energy dualities of N=1 theories.

Fermionization and boundary states in 1+1 dimensions

In the last few years it was realized that every fermionic theory in 1+1 dimensions is a generalized Jordan-Wigner transform of a bosonic theory with a non-anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. In this note we determine how the boundary states are mapped under this correspondence. We also interpret this mapping as the fusion of the original boundary with the fermionization interface.

Numerical evidence for a Haagerup conformal field theory

We numerically study an anyon chain based on the Haagerup fusion category, and find evidence that it leads in the long-distance limit to a conformal field theory whose central charge is $\sim 2$. Fusion categories generalize the concept of finite group symmetries to non-invertible symmetry operations, and the Haagerup fusion category is the simplest one which comes neither from finite groups nor affine Lie algebras. As such, ours is the first example of conformal field theories which have truly exotic generalized symmetries.

Matching higher symmetries across Intriligator-Seiberg duality

We study higher symmetries and anomalies of 4d $\mathfrak{so}(2n_c)$ gauge theory with $2n_f$ flavors. We find that they depend on the parity of $n_c$ and $n_f$, the global form of the gauge group, and the discrete theta angle. The contribution from the fermions plays a central role in our analysis. Furthermore, our conclusion applies to $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric cases as well, and we see that higher symmetries and anomalies match across the Intriligator-Seiberg duality between $\mathfrak{so}(2n_c)\leftrightarrow\mathfrak{so}(2n_f-2n_c+4)$.

Fermionic minimal models

We show that there is a fermionic minimal model, i.e. a 1+1d conformal field theory which contains operators of half-integral spins in its spectrum, for each $c=1-6/m(m+1)$, $m\ge 3$. This generalizes the Majorana fermion for $c=1/2$, $m=3$ and the smallest $\mathcal{N}{=}1$ supersymmetric minimal model for $c=7/10$, $m=4$. We provide explicit Hamiltonians on Majorana chains realizing these fermionic minimal models.

Anomalies, Black strings and the charged Cardy formula

We derive the general anomaly polynomial for a class of two-dimensional CFTs arising as twisted compactifications of a higher-dimensional theory on compact manifolds $\mathcal{M}_d$, including the contribution of the isometries of $\mathcal{M}_d$. We then use the result to perform a counting of microstates for electrically charged and rotating supersymmetric black strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$ and AdS$_7\times S^4$ with horizon topology BTZ$ \ltimes S^2$ and BTZ$ \ltimes S^2 \times Σ_\mathfrak{g}$, respectively, where $Σ_\mathfrak{g}$ is a Riemann surface. We explicitly construct the latter class of solutions by uplifting a class of four-dimensional rotating black holes. We provide a microscopic explanation of the entropy of such black holes by using a charged version of the Cardy formula.

Topological modular forms and the absence of a heterotic global anomaly

Spacetime theories obtained from perturbative string theory constructions are automatically free of perturbative anomalies, but it is not settled whether they are always free of global anomalies. Here we discuss a possible $\mathbb{Z}_{24}$-valued pure gravitational anomaly of heterotic compactifications down to two spacetime dimensions, and point out that it can be shown to vanish using the theory of topological modular forms, assuming the validity of the Stolz-Teichner conjecture.
