Systematic assessment of disk truncation in the black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613 using NICER

The 2023/24 NICER monitoring campaign of the 7 Crab bright black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613 covered the outburst in almost all accretion states. High-quality data are available in the high-Eddington-fraction hard-intermediate state, hard-to-soft transition, the soft state, and the poorly studied back-transition to the dim hard state, making it an ideal dataset to compare the accretion flow at vastly different accretion rates. We apply disk continuum fitting techniques to investigate the evolution of the inner disk radius throughout the outburst. Taking a temperature-dependent color-correction factor into account, we see evolution of the disk inner radius by a factor of a few comparing the hard states to the thermal/soft state. We tentatively detect an onset of disk truncation in the soft-to-hard transition, right after the source leaves the soft state. After accounting for model systematics, we find the disk to be more truncated in the high-luminosity bright hard state compared to the low-luminosity dim hard state.

Exploring the spin dependence on mass inclination and distance for the newly discovered black hole X-ray binary Swift J151857.0-572147

The black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) Swift J151857.0-572147 was discovered during its first outburst in March 2024. We review the archive of NICER observations from this outburst, focusing on the soft states. We select spectra for which the disk to total flux ratio exceeds 0.8 and the coronal scattering fraction fsc is less than 25%, conditions under which the accretion disk is expected to extend to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and remains geometrically thin. Through a continuum fitting analysis, we explore the dependence of spin on mass, inclination, and distance. We constrain the spin within the parameter space typical of stellar-mass black holes (sBHs), assuming a mass around 10 solar masses, inclination angles between 20 and 60 degree, and distances between 4 and 16 kpc. For fiducial parameters: a mass of 10 solar masses, a distance of 10 kpc, and an inclination angle of 40 degree, a moderate spin of approximately 0.7 is obtained. However, precise determination of the spin will require accurate measurements of these parameters. Our analysis provides a framework to infer the spin and estimate its uncertainties once more precise measurements of mass, distance, and inclination become available. As we demonstrate, lower inclination angles, greater distances, or larger black hole masses result in higher spin values.

EP250827b/SN 2025wkm: An X-ray Flash-Supernova Powered by a Central Engine and Circumstellar Interaction

We present the discovery of EP250827b/SN 2025wkm, an X-ray Flash (XRF) discovered by the Einstein Probe (EP), accompanied by a broad-line Type Ic supernova (SN Ic-BL) at $z = 0.1194$. EP250827b possesses a prompt X-ray luminosity of $\sim 10^{45} \, \rm{erg \, s^{-1}}$, lasts over 1000 seconds, and has a peak energy $E_{\rm{p}} < 1.5$ keV at 90\% confidence. SN 2025wkm possesses a double-peaked optical light curve (LC), though its bolometric luminosity plateaus after its initial peak for $\sim 20$ days, consistent with a central engine injecting additional energy into the explosion. Its spectrum transitions from a blue to red continuum with clear blueshifted broad absorption features consistent with a SN Ic-BL classification. We do not detect any transient radio emission and rule out the existence of an on-axis, energetic jet $\gtrsim 10^{50}~$erg assuming a typical LGRB circumburst constant density ($n \approx 10^{-3}$--$10^{-1}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$) and microphysical parameters ($\epsilon_{\rm e} = 0.1$ and $\epsilon_{\rm B} = 0.01$). In the model we invoke, the collapse gives rise to a long-lived magnetar, potentially surrounded by an accretion disk. Magnetically--driven winds from the magnetar and the disk mix together and break out with a velocity $\sim 0.35c$ and interact with an extended circumstellar medium with radius $\sim 10^{13}$ cm, generating X-ray breakout emission through non-thermal free-free processes. The disk outflows and magnetar winds power blackbody photospheric emission as they cool adiabatically and thermalize, producing the first SN peak. The spin-down luminosity of the magnetar and radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni powers the late-time emission. We end by discussing the landscape of XRF-SNe within the context of EP's recent discoveries.

Biomimetic Liquid Metal Cell

Gallium-based liquid metals, as a broad category of emerging functional materials with unique physical, chemical, and biological properties, offer numerous possibilities for advancing intelligent systems. However, a basic query persistently remains for the complex liquid metal system: Is there a minimal functional unit that can fully capture its diversity of morphology and function? Cells, as the most basic structural and functional units of life, are small in scale but have complex structures, functions, and life activities. Analogous to nature, this article proposes the concept of liquid metal cells, and systematically explores their construction routes, sensing capabilities, motion behaviors, and potential applications. We first construct a multi-phase composite structure with liquid metal as the nucleus, ionic solution as the cytoplasm, and polymer as the cell membrane by developing a layered cryogenic molding method. Furthermore, we reveal that liquid metal cells exhibit inherently versatile responsive characteristics and self-adaptive behaviors to thermal, pressure, chemical, electrical, and magnetic fields, indicating "small world, vast potential". Based on these fundamental findings, we finally demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing liquid metal cells as sensors, fluidic valves, and material transport carriers in flow channels through dynamic control.

Coronal Mass Ejections Deflected by Newly Emerging Flux: A Combined Analytic and Numerical Study

Newly emerging flux (NEF) has been widely studied as a trigger of solar filament eruptions, but its influence on the subsequent dynamics remains poorly explored. Because NEF typically emerges adjacent to filaments, it imposes magnetic asymmetry that can drive non-radial eruptions and complicate space-weather forecasting. We bridge analytic catastrophe theory with 2D resistive MHD simulations: analytic solutions provide magnetic configurations containing a flux rope at the loss-of-equilibrium point, which are then used as initial conditions for simulations to examine the following dynamics. We find that NEF governs the kinematics of filament eruptions in two ways. First, by reshaping coronal stability, NEF can create or eliminate a higher equilibrium in corona, thereby producing failed eruptions or CMEs. In the transitional situation where a metastable equilibrium appears, the rising filament decelerates and stalls before re-accelerating into a CME, consistent with observed two-step eruptions. Second, by breaking symmetry, NEF deflects eruptions away from the radial direction: depending on its polarity, it acts as a repulsor or an attractor on eruptive filaments, and the deflection magnitude increases with the degree of asymmetry. Our theory yields two characteristic angles that predict the deflection directions of CMEs and failed eruptions, and simulations closely aligns with these predictors. These results highlight the NEF not only as a trigger but also as a key factor that governs both the acceleration and deflection of eruptions during their propagation in the low corona.

Probing the Strong Gravity Region of Black Holes with eXTP

We present the novel capabilities of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission to study the strong gravity region around stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binary systems and supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. eXTP can combine X-ray spectral, timing, and polarimetric techniques to study the accretion process near black holes, measure black hole masses and spins, and test Einstein's theory of General Relativity in the strong field regime. We show how eXTP can improve the current measurements of black holes of existing X-ray missions and we discuss the scientific questions that can be addressed.

Measuring the Spin of Black Hole Transient 4U 1543-47 Using Insight-HXMT

We provided a comprehensive study of the properties of the black hole in the low-mass X-ray binary system 4U 1543-47, specifically focusing on the 2021 outburst (MJD 59380-59470). Using observations from the \textit{Insight}-HXMT mission, we employed X-ray reflection fitting method and analyzed spectral data to estimate key black hole parameters. Through our investigation redbased on 6 out of the 52 available observations, we estimated the spin parameter of the black hole to be $0.902_{-0.053}^{+0.054}$ and the inclination angle of the accretion disk to be $28.91_{-1.24}^{+1.82}$ degrees (90\% confidence limits, statistical only), then we discussed the influence of high luminosity. Based on the \texttt{relxill} series models are not suitable for thick disk scenario, and in comparison with findings from other studies, we propose that our estimation of the spin value may be exaggerated.

The spin measurement of MAXI J1348-630 using the Insight-HXMT data

We report the results of fitting Insight-HXMT data to the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1348-430, which was discovered on January 26th, 2019, with the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) on-board MAXI. Several observations at the beginning of the first burst were selected, with a total of 10 spectra. From the residuals of fits using disk plus power law models, X-ray reflection signatures were clearly visible in some of these observations. We use the state-of the-art relxill series reflection model to fit six spectra with distinct reflection signatures and a joint fit to these spectra. In particular, we focus on the results for the black hole spin values. Assuming Rin = RISCO, the spin parameter is constrained to be 0.82+0.04-0.03 with 90% confidence level (statistical only).

The spin measurement of MAXI J0637-430: a black hole candidate with high disk density

The Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J0637-430 was first discovered by $\textit{MAXI/GSC}$ on 2019 November 02. We study the spectral properties of MAXI J0637-430 by using the archived $\textit{NuSTAR}$ data and $\textit{Swift}$/XRT data. After fitting the eight spectra by using a disk component and a powerlaw component model with absorption, we select the spectra with relatively strong reflection components for detailed X-ray reflection spectroscopy. Using the most state-of-art reflection model $\tt{relxillCp}$, the spectral fitting measures a black hole spin $\textit{a}_{\rm{*}} > 0.72$ and the inclination angle of the accretion disk $i$ = $46.1_{-5.3}^{+4.0}$ degrees, at 90 per cent confidence level. In addition, the fitting results show an extreme supersolar iron abundance. Combined with the fitting results of the reflection model $\tt{reflionx\_hd}$, we consider that this unphysical iron abundance may be caused by a very high density accretion disk ( $n_{\rm{e}} > 2.34 \times 10^{21}$ $\rm{cm}^{-3}$ ) or a strong Fe K$α$ emission line. The soft excess is found in the soft state spectral fitting results, which may be an extra free-free heating effect caused by high density of the accretion disk. Finally, we discuss the robustness of black hole spin obtained by X-ray reflection spectroscopy. The result of relatively high spin is self-consistent with broadened Fe K$α$ line. Iron abundance and disk density have no effect on the spin results.

Dolphin: A Spoken Language Proficiency Assessment System for Elementary Education

Spoken language proficiency is critically important for children's growth and personal development. Due to the limited and imbalanced educational resources in China, elementary students barely have chances to improve their oral language skills in classes. Verbal fluency tasks (VFTs) were invented to let the students practice their spoken language proficiency after school. VFTs are simple but concrete math related questions that ask students to not only report answers but speak out the entire thinking process. In spite of the great success of VFTs, they bring a heavy grading burden to elementary teachers. To alleviate this problem, we develop Dolphin, a spoken language proficiency assessment system for Chinese elementary education. Dolphin is able to automatically evaluate both phonological fluency and semantic relevance of students' VFT answers. We conduct a wide range of offline and online experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of Dolphin. In our offline experiments, we show that Dolphin improves both phonological fluency and semantic relevance evaluation performance when compared to state-of-the-art baselines on real-world educational data sets. In our online A/B experiments, we test Dolphin with 183 teachers from 2 major cities (Hangzhou and Xi'an) in China for 10 weeks and the results show that VFT assignments grading coverage is improved by 22\%.
