Memory-Native Non-Terrestrial Networks for Embodied Intelligence

Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) provide ubiquitous connectivity for embodied intelligence (EI), enabling robots in the wilderness to leverage cloud resources or report critical information to remote centers. However, the synergy is nontrivial due to the highly dynamic, resource-constrained, topology-varying, and task-oriented environment. Existing memoryless NTN protocols become inefficient, since the decisions are driven by local channel conditions and instantaneous service demands. To address these limitations, this paper proposes the memory-native NTN (Mem-NTN) paradigm that leverages long-horizon contexts for memory-augmented system optimization. To realize this paradigm shift, we establish a dual-memory architecture that distinguishes between physical memory representing the state of the world and digital memory encoding historical network experience. We develop memory acquisition, compression, valuation, update, and utilization mechanisms that facilitate cross-layer, memory-native decision-making, spanning from the physical and access layers up to the network and application layers. Experiments in satellite embodied question answering (SEQA) demonstrate that the proposed Mem-NTN consistently outperforms conventional stateless NTN and terrestrial approaches.

LAGS: Low-Altitude Gaussian Splatting with Groupwise Heterogeneous Graph Learning

Low-altitude Gaussian splatting (LAGS) facilitates 3D scene reconstruction by aggregating aerial images from distributed drones. However, as LAGS prioritizes maximizing reconstruction quality over communication throughput, existing low-altitude resource allocation schemes become inefficient. This inefficiency stems from their failure to account for image diversity introduced by varying viewpoints. To fill this gap, we propose a groupwise heterogeneous graph neural network (GW-HGNN) for LAGS resource allocation. GW-HGNN explicitly models the non-uniform contribution of different image groups to the reconstruction process, thus automatically balancing data fidelity and transmission cost. The key insight of GW-HGNN is to transform LAGS losses and communication constraints into graph learning costs for dual-level message passing. Experiments on real-world LAGS datasets demonstrate that GW-HGNN significantly outperforms state-of-the-art benchmarks across key rendering metrics, including PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS. Furthermore, GW-HGNN reduces computational latency by approximately 100x compared to the widely-used MOSEK solver, achieving millisecond-level inference suitable for real-time deployment.

Edge Collaborative Gaussian Splatting with Integrated Rendering and Communication

Gaussian splatting (GS) struggles with degraded rendering quality on low-cost devices. To address this issue, we present edge collaborative GS (ECO-GS), where each user can switch between a local small GS model to guarantee timeliness and a remote large GS model to guarantee fidelity. However, deciding how to engage the large GS model is nontrivial, due to the interdependency between rendering requirements and resource conditions. To this end, we propose integrated rendering and communication (IRAC), which jointly optimizes collaboration status (i.e., deciding whether to engage large GS) and edge power allocation (i.e., enabling remote rendering) under communication constraints across different users by minimizing a newly-derived GS switching function. Despite the nonconvexity of the problem, we propose an efficient penalty majorization minimization (PMM) algorithm to obtain the critical point solution. Furthermore, we develop an imitation learning optimization (ILO) algorithm, which reduces the computational time by over 100x compared to PMM. Experiments demonstrate the superiority of PMM and the real-time execution capability of ILO.

Embodied Edge Intelligence Meets Near Field Communication: Concept, Design, and Verification

Realizing embodied artificial intelligence is challenging due to the huge computation demands of large models (LMs). To support LMs while ensuring real-time inference, embodied edge intelligence (EEI) is a promising paradigm, which leverages an LM edge to provide computing powers in close proximity to embodied robots. Due to embodied data exchange, EEI requires higher spectral efficiency, enhanced communication security, and reduced inter-user interference. To meet these requirements, near-field communication (NFC), which leverages extremely large antenna arrays as its hardware foundation, is an ideal solution. Therefore, this paper advocates the integration of EEI and NFC, resulting in a near-field EEI (NEEI) paradigm. However, NEEI also introduces new challenges that cannot be adequately addressed by isolated EEI or NFC designs, creating research opportunities for joint optimization of both functionalities. To this end, we propose radio-friendly embodied planning for EEI-assisted NFC scenarios and view-guided beam-focusing for NFC-assisted EEI scenarios. We also elaborate how to realize resource-efficient NEEI through opportunistic collaborative navigation. Experimental results are provided to confirm the superiority of the proposed techniques compared with various benchmarks.

Heuristic-enhanced Candidates Selection strategy for GPTs tackle Few-Shot Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

Few-Shot Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (FSABSA) is an indispensable and highly challenging task in natural language processing. However, methods based on Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) struggle to accommodate multiple sub-tasks, and methods based on Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) perform poorly. To address the above issues, the paper designs a Heuristic-enhanced Candidates Selection (HCS) strategy and further proposes All in One (AiO) model based on it. The model works in a two-stage, which simultaneously accommodates the accuracy of PLMs and the generalization capability of GPTs. Specifically, in the first stage, a backbone model based on PLMs generates rough heuristic candidates for the input sentence. In the second stage, AiO leverages LLMs' contextual learning capabilities to generate precise predictions. The study conducted comprehensive comparative and ablation experiments on five benchmark datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model can better adapt to multiple sub-tasks, and also outperforms the methods that directly utilize GPTs.

Robotic Sensor Network: Achieving Mutual Communication Control Assistance With Fast Cross-Layer Optimization

Robotic sensor network (RSN) is an emerging paradigm that harvests data from remote sensors adopting mobile robots. However, communication and control functionalities in RSNs are interdependent, for which existing approaches become inefficient, as they plan robot trajectories merely based on unidirectional impact between communication and control. This paper proposes the concept of mutual communication control assistance (MCCA), which leverages a model predictive communication and control (MPC2) design for intertwined optimization of motion-assisted communication and communication-assisted collision avoidance. The MPC2 problem jointly optimizes the cross-layer variables of sensor powers and robot actions, and is solved by alternating optimization, strong duality, and cross-horizon minorization maximization in real time. This approach contrasts with conventional communication control co-design methods that calculate an offline non-executable trajectory. Experiments in a high-fidelity RSN simulator demonstrate that the proposed MCCA outperforms various benchmarks in terms of communication efficiency and navigation time.

Improving Photometric Redshift Estimation for Cosmology with LSST using Bayesian Neural Networks

We present results exploring the role that probabilistic deep learning models can play in cosmology from large-scale astronomical surveys through photometric redshift (photo-z) estimation. Photo-z uncertainty estimates are critical for the science goals of upcoming large-scale surveys such as LSST, however common machine learning methods typically provide only point estimates and lack uncertainties on predictions. We turn to Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) as a promising way to provide accurate predictions of redshift values with uncertainty estimates. We have compiled a galaxy data set from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey with grizy photometry, which is designed to be a smaller scale version of large surveys like LSST. We use this data set to investigate the performance of a neural network (NN) and a probabilistic BNN for photo-z estimation and evaluate their performance with respect to LSST photo-z science requirements. We also examine the utility of photo-z uncertainties as a means to reduce catastrophic outlier estimates. The BNN outputs the estimate in the form of a Gaussian probability distribution. We use the mean and standard deviation as the redshift estimate and uncertainty. We find that the BNN can produce accurate uncertainties. Using a coverage test, we find excellent agreement with expectation -- 67.2$\%$ of galaxies between $0 < 2.5$ have 1-$σ$ uncertainties that cover the spectroscopic value. We also include a comparison to alternative machine learning models using the same data. We find the BNN meets two out of three of the LSST photo-z science requirements in the range $0 < z < 2.5$.

Photometric Redshifts for Cosmology: Improving Accuracy and Uncertainty Estimates Using Bayesian Neural Networks

We present results exploring the role that probabilistic deep learning models can play in cosmology from large scale astronomical surveys through estimating the distances to galaxies (redshifts) from photometry. Due to the massive scale of data coming from these new and upcoming sky surveys, machine learning techniques using galaxy photometry are increasingly adopted to predict galactic redshifts which are important for inferring cosmological parameters such as the nature of dark energy. Associated uncertainty estimates are also critical measurements, however, common machine learning methods typically provide only point estimates and lack uncertainty information as outputs. We turn to Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) as a promising way to provide accurate predictions of redshift values. We have compiled a new galaxy training dataset from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey, designed to mimic large surveys, but over a smaller portion of the sky. We evaluate the performance and accuracy of photometric redshift (photo-z) predictions from photometry using machine learning, astronomical and probabilistic metrics. We find that while the Bayesian neural network did not perform as well as non-Bayesian neural networks if evaluated solely by point estimate photo-z values, BNNs can provide uncertainty estimates that are necessary for cosmology

Label-free virtual HER2 immunohistochemical staining of breast tissue using deep learning

The immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) biomarker is widely practiced in breast tissue analysis, preclinical studies and diagnostic decisions, guiding cancer treatment and investigation of pathogenesis. HER2 staining demands laborious tissue treatment and chemical processing performed by a histotechnologist, which typically takes one day to prepare in a laboratory, increasing analysis time and associated costs. Here, we describe a deep learning-based virtual HER2 IHC staining method using a conditional generative adversarial network that is trained to rapidly transform autofluorescence microscopic images of unlabeled/label-free breast tissue sections into bright-field equivalent microscopic images, matching the standard HER2 IHC staining that is chemically performed on the same tissue sections. The efficacy of this virtual HER2 staining framework was demonstrated by quantitative analysis, in which three board-certified breast pathologists blindly graded the HER2 scores of virtually stained and immunohistochemically stained HER2 whole slide images (WSIs) to reveal that the HER2 scores determined by inspecting virtual IHC images are as accurate as their immunohistochemically stained counterparts. A second quantitative blinded study performed by the same diagnosticians further revealed that the virtually stained HER2 images exhibit a comparable staining quality in the level of nuclear detail, membrane clearness, and absence of staining artifacts with respect to their immunohistochemically stained counterparts. This virtual HER2 staining framework bypasses the costly, laborious, and time-consuming IHC staining procedures in laboratory, and can be extended to other types of biomarkers to accelerate the IHC tissue staining used in life sciences and biomedical workflow.

Randomized $Δ$-Edge-Coloring via Quaternion of Complex Colors

This paper explores the application of a new algebraic method of color exchanges to the edge coloring of simple graphs. Vizing's theorem states that the edge coloring of a simple graph $G$ requires either $Δ$ or $Δ+1$ colors, where $Δ$ is the maximum vertex degree of $G$. Holyer proved that it is {\bf NP}-complete to decide whether $G$ is $Δ$-edge-colorable even for cubic graphs. By introducing the concept of complex colors, we show that the color-exchange operation follows the same multiplication rules as quaternion. An initially $Δ$-edge-colored graph $G$ allows variable-colored edges, which can be eliminated by color exchanges in a manner similar to variable eliminations in solving systems of linear equations. The problem is solved if all variables are eliminated and a properly $Δ$-edge-colored graph is reached. For a randomly generated graph $G$, we prove that our algorithm returns a proper $Δ$-edge-coloring with a probability of at least 1/2 in $O(Δ|V||E|^5)$ time if $G$ is $Δ$-edge-colorable. Otherwise, the algorithm halts in polynomial time and signals the impossibility of a solution, meaning that the chromatic index of $G$ probably equals $Δ+1$. Animations of the edge-coloring algorithms proposed in this paper are posted at YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMnj4UMYl7k.
