Faraday patterns generated by Rabi oscillation in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

The interaction between atoms in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is effectively modulated by the Rabi oscillation. This periodic modulation of the effective interaction is shown to generate Faraday patterns through parametric resonance. We show that there are multiple resonances arising from the density and spin waves in a two-component BEC, and investigate the interplay between the Faraday-pattern formation and the phase separation.

Interaction modulation in a long-lived Bose-Einstein condensate by rf coupling

We demonstrate modulation of the effective interaction between the magnetic sublevels of the hyperfine spin $F=1$ in a $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate by Rabi coupling with radio-frequency (rf) field. The use of the $F=1$ manifold enables us to observe the long-term evolution of the system owing to the absence of inelastic collisional losses. We observe that the evolution of the density distribution reflects the change in the effective interaction between atoms due to rf coupling. We also realize a miscibility-to-immiscibility transition in the magnetic sublevels of $m = \pm 1$ by quenching the rf field. Rf-induced interaction modulation in long-lived states as demonstrated here will facilitate the study of out-of-equilibrium quantum systems.

Dissipation-assisted coherence formation in a spinor quantum gas

Dissipation affects all real-world physical systems and often induces energy or particle loss, limiting the efficiency of processes. Dissipation can also lead to the formation of dissipative structures or induce quantum decoherence. Quantum decoherence and dissipation are critical for quantum information processing. On the one hand, such effects can make achieving quantum computation much harder, but on the other hand, dissipation can promote quantum coherence and offer control over the system. It is the latter avenue -- how dissipation can be exploited to promote coherence in a quantum system -- that is explored in this work. We report the exploration of dissipation in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of spin-2 87Rb atoms. Through experiments and numerical simulations, we show that spin-dependent particle dissipation can give rise to quantum coherence and lead to the spontaneous formation of a magnetic eigenstate. Although the interactions between the atomic spins are not ferromagnetic, the spin-dependent dissipation enhances the synchronization of the relative phases among five magnetic sublevels, and this effects promotes magnetization.

Ground-state phases of a mixture of spin-1 and spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the ground-state phases of a mixture of spin-1 and spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates at zero magnetic field. In addition to the intra-spin interactions, two spin-dependent interaction coefficients are introduced to describe the inter-spin interaction. We systematically explore the wide parameter space, and obtain phase diagrams containing a rich variety of phases. For example, there exists a phase in which the spin-1 and spin-2 vectors are tilted relative to each other breaking the axial symmetry.

Spinor dynamics in a mixture of spin-1 and spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates

The spinor dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb atoms with hyperfine spins 1 and 2 were investigated. A technique of simultaneous Ramsey interferometry was developed for individual control of the vectors of two spins with almost the same Zeeman splittings. The mixture of spinor condensates is generated in the transversely polarized spin-1 and the longitudinally polarized spin-2 states. The time evolution of the spin-1 condensate exhibits dephasing and rephasing of the Larmor precession due to the interaction with the spin-2 condensate. The scattering lengths between spin-1 and -2 atoms were estimated by comparison with the numerical simulation using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The proposed technique is expected to facilitate the further study of multiple spinor condensates.

Non-equilibrium dynamics induced by miscible-immiscible transition in binary Bose-Einstein condensates

The non-equilibrium spatial dynamics in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate were excited by controlled miscible-immiscible transition, in which immiscible condensates with domain structures are transferred to the miscible condensates by changing the internal state of 87Rb atoms. The subsequent evolution exhibits the oscillation of spatial structures involving component mixing and separation. We show that the larger total energy of the miscible system results in a higher oscillation frequency. This investigation introduces a new technique to control the miscibility and the spatial degrees of freedom in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

Bouncing motion and penetration dynamics in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate dynamic properties of bouncing and penetration in colliding binary and ternary Bose-Einstein condensates comprised of different Zeeman or hyperfine states of 87Rb. Through the application of magnetic field gradient pulses, two- or three-component condensates in an optical trap are spatially separated and then made to collide. The subsequent evolutions are classified into two categories: repeated bouncing motion and mutual penetration after damped bounces. We experimentally observed mutual penetration for immiscible condensates, bouncing between miscible condensates, and domain formation for miscible condensates. From numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we find that the penetration time can be tuned by slightly changing the atomic interaction strengths.

Suppression of relative flow by multiple domains in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate flow properties of immiscible Bose-Einstein condensates composed of two different Zeeman spin states of 87Rb. Spatially overlapping two condensates in the optical trap are prepared by application of a resonant radio frequency pulse, and then the magnetic field gradient is applied in order to produce the atomic flow. We find that the spontaneous multiple domain formation arising from the immiscible nature drastically changes the fluidity. The homogeneously overlapping condensates readily separate under the magnetic field gradient, and they form stable configuration composed of the two layers. In contrast, the relative flow between two condensates are largely suppressed in the case where the magnetic field gradient is applied after spontaneous domain formation.

Observation of Dipole-Induced Spin Texture in an $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein Condensate

We report the spin texture formation resulting from the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in a spin-2 $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. The spinor condensate is prepared in the transversely polarized spin state and the time evolution is observed under a magnetic field of 90 mG with a gradient of 3 mG/cm using Stern-Gerlach imaging. The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which reveals that the observed spatial modulation of the longitudinal magnetization is due to the spin precession in an effective magnetic field produced by the dipole-dipole interaction. These results show that the dipole-dipole interaction has considerable effects even on spinor condensates of alkali metal atoms.

Control of spin current in a Bose gas by bang-bang pulses

We generate spin currents in an $^{87}$Rb spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate by application of a magnetic field gradient. The spin current destroys the spin polarization, leading to a sudden onset of two-body collisions. In addition, the spin coherence, as measured by the fringe contrast using Ramsey interferometry, is reduced drastically but experiences a weak revival due to in-trap oscillations. The spin current can be controlled using periodic $π$ pulses (bang-bang control), producing longer spin coherence times. Our results show that spin coherence can be maintained even in the presence of spin currents, with applications to quantum sensing in noisy environments.

Quantum tele-amplification with a continuous variable superposition state

Optical coherent states are classical light fields with high purity, and are essential carriers of information in optical networks. If these states could be controlled in the quantum regime, allowing for their quantum superposition (referred to as a Schrödinger cat state), then novel quantum-enhanced functions such as coherent-state quantum computing (CSQC), quantum metrology, and a quantum repeater could be realized in the networks. Optical cat states are now routinely generated in the laboratories. An important next challenge is to use them for implementing the aforementioned functions. Here we demonstrate a basic CSQC protocol, where a cat state is used as an entanglement resource for teleporting a coherent state with an amplitude gain. We also show how this can be extended to a loss-tolerant quantum relay of multi-ary phase-shift keyed coherent states. These protocols could be useful both in optical and quantum communications.

Ultrabroadband direct detection of nonclassical photon statistics at telecom wavelength

Broadband light sources play essential roles in diverse fields, such as high-capacity optical communications, optical coherence tomography, optical spectroscopy, and spectrograph calibration. Though an ultrabroadband nonclassical state from standard spontaneous parametric down-conversion may serve as a quantum counterpart, its detection and quantum characterization have been a challenging task. Here we demonstrate the quantitative characterization of a multimode structure in such an ultrabroadband (150 nm FWHM) squeezed state at telecom wavelength (1.5 μm). The nonclassical photon distribution of our highly multimode state is directly observed using a superconducting transition-edge sensor. From the observed photon correlation functions, we show that several tens of different squeezers are coexisting in the same spatial mode. We anticipate our results and technique open up a new possibility to generate and characterize nonclassical light sources for a large-scale optical quantum network in the frequency domain.

Spin-Echo-Based Magnetometry with Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

We demonstrate detection of a weak alternate-current magnetic field by application of the spin echo technique to F = 2 Bose-Einstein condensates. A magnetic field sensitivity of 12 pT/Hz^1/2 is attained with the atom number of 5*10^3 at spatial resolution of 99 μm^2. Our observations indicate magnetic field fluctuations synchronous with the power supply line frequency. We show that this noise is greatly suppressed by application of a reverse phase magnetic field. Our technique is useful in order to create a stable magnetic field environment, which is an important requirement for atomic experiments which require a weak bias magnetic field.

Quantum State Engineering using Single Nuclear Spin Qubit of Optically Manipulated Ytterbium Atom

A single Yb atom is loaded into a high-finesse optical cavity with a moving lattice, and its nuclear spin state is manipulated using a nuclear magnetic resonance technique. A highly reliable quantum state control with fidelity and purity greater than 0.98 and 0.96, respectively, is confirmed by the full quantum state tomography; a projective measurement with high speed (500us) and high efficiency (0.98) is accomplished using the cavity QED technique. Because a hyperfine coupling is induced only when the projective measurement is operational, the long coherence times (T_1 = 0.49 s and T_2 = 0.10 s) are maintained. Our technique can be applied for implementing a scalable one-way quantum computation with a cluster state in an optical lattice.

Projective measurement of a single nuclear spin qubit by using two-mode cavity QED

We report the implementation of projective measurement on a single 1/2 nuclear spin of the 171Yb atom by measuring the polarization of cavity-enhanced fluorescence. To obtain cavity-enhanced fluorescence having a nuclear-spin-dependent polarization, we construct a two-mode cavity QED system, in which two cyclic transitions are independently coupled to each of the orthogonally polarized cavity modes, by manipulating the energy level of 171Yb. This system can associate the nuclear spin degrees of freedom with the polarization of photons, which will facilitate the development of hybrid quantum systems.

Faraday Rotation with Single Nuclear Spin Qubit in a High-Finesse Optical Cavity

When an off-resonant light field is coupled with atomic spins, its polarization can rotate depending on the direction of the spins via a Faraday rotation which has been used for monitoring and controlling the atomic spins. We observed Faraday rotation by an angle of more than 10 degrees for a single 1/2 nuclear spin of 171Yb atom in a high-finesse optical cavity. By employing the coupling between the single nuclear spin and a photon, we have also demonstrated that the spin can be projected or weakly measured through the projection of the transmitted single ancillary photon.
