Real-time Human-Centric Segmentation for Complex Video Scenes

Most existing video tasks related to "human" focus on the segmentation of salient humans, ignoring the unspecified others in the video. Few studies have focused on segmenting and tracking all humans in a complex video, including pedestrians and humans of other states (e.g., seated, riding, or occluded). In this paper, we propose a novel framework, abbreviated as HVISNet, that segments and tracks all presented people in given videos based on a one-stage detector. To better evaluate complex scenes, we offer a new benchmark called HVIS (Human Video Instance Segmentation), which comprises 1447 human instance masks in 805 high-resolution videos in diverse scenes. Extensive experiments show that our proposed HVISNet outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy at a real-time inference speed (30 FPS), especially on complex video scenes. We also notice that using the center of the bounding box to distinguish different individuals severely deteriorates the segmentation accuracy, especially in heavily occluded conditions. This common phenomenon is referred to as the ambiguous positive samples problem. To alleviate this problem, we propose a mechanism named Inner Center Sampling to improve the accuracy of instance segmentation. Such a plug-and-play inner center sampling mechanism can be incorporated in any instance segmentation models based on a one-stage detector to improve the performance. In particular, it gains 4.1 mAP improvement on the state-of-the-art method in the case of occluded humans. Code and data are available at https://github.com/IIGROUP/HVISNet.

PoseDet: Fast Multi-Person Pose Estimation Using Pose Embedding

Current methods of multi-person pose estimation typically treat the localization and the association of body joints separately. It is convenient but inefficient, leading to additional computation and a waste of time. This paper, however, presents a novel framework PoseDet (Estimating Pose by Detection) to localize and associate body joints simultaneously at higher inference speed. Moreover, we propose the keypoint-aware pose embedding to represent an object in terms of the locations of its keypoints. The proposed pose embedding contains semantic and geometric information, allowing us to access discriminative and informative features efficiently. It is utilized for candidate classification and body joint localization in PoseDet, leading to robust predictions of various poses. This simple framework achieves an unprecedented speed and a competitive accuracy on the COCO benchmark compared with state-of-the-art methods. Extensive experiments on the CrowdPose benchmark show the robustness in the crowd scenes. Source code is available.

NTIRE 2021 Challenge on Perceptual Image Quality Assessment

This paper reports on the NTIRE 2021 challenge on perceptual image quality assessment (IQA), held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement workshop (NTIRE) workshop at CVPR 2021. As a new type of image processing technology, perceptual image processing algorithms based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have produced images with more realistic textures. These output images have completely different characteristics from traditional distortions, thus pose a new challenge for IQA methods to evaluate their visual quality. In comparison with previous IQA challenges, the training and testing datasets in this challenge include the outputs of perceptual image processing algorithms and the corresponding subjective scores. Thus they can be used to develop and evaluate IQA methods on GAN-based distortions. The challenge has 270 registered participants in total. In the final testing stage, 13 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. Almost all of them have achieved much better results than existing IQA methods, while the winning method can demonstrate state-of-the-art performance.

Region-Adaptive Deformable Network for Image Quality Assessment

Image quality assessment (IQA) aims to assess the perceptual quality of images. The outputs of the IQA algorithms are expected to be consistent with human subjective perception. In image restoration and enhancement tasks, images generated by generative adversarial networks (GAN) can achieve better visual performance than traditional CNN-generated images, although they have spatial shift and texture noise. Unfortunately, the existing IQA methods have unsatisfactory performance on the GAN-based distortion partially because of their low tolerance to spatial misalignment. To this end, we propose the reference-oriented deformable convolution, which can improve the performance of an IQA network on GAN-based distortion by adaptively considering this misalignment. We further propose a patch-level attention module to enhance the interaction among different patch regions, which are processed independently in previous patch-based methods. The modified residual block is also proposed by applying modifications to the classic residual block to construct a patch-region-based baseline called WResNet. Equipping this baseline with the two proposed modules, we further propose Region-Adaptive Deformable Network (RADN). The experiment results on the NTIRE 2021 Perceptual Image Quality Assessment Challenge dataset show the superior performance of RADN, and the ensemble approach won fourth place in the final testing phase of the challenge. Code is available at https://github.com/IIGROUP/RADN.

Coarse-to-Fine Searching for Efficient Generative Adversarial Networks

This paper studies the neural architecture search (NAS) problem for developing efficient generator networks. Compared with deep models for visual recognition tasks, generative adversarial network (GAN) are usually designed to conduct various complex image generation. We first discover an intact search space of generator networks including three dimensionalities, i.e., path, operator, channel for fully excavating the network performance. To reduce the huge search cost, we explore a coarse-to-fine search strategy which divides the overall search process into three sub-optimization problems accordingly. In addition, a fair supernet training approach is utilized to ensure that all sub-networks can be updated fairly and stably. Experiments results on benchmarks show that we can provide generator networks with better image quality and lower computational costs over the state-of-the-art methods. For example, with our method, it takes only about 8 GPU hours on the entire edges-to-shoes dataset to get a 2.56 MB model with a 24.13 FID score and 10 GPU hours on the entire Urban100 dataset to get a 1.49 MB model with a 24.94 PSNR score.

Towards Open-World Text-Guided Face Image Generation and Manipulation

The existing text-guided image synthesis methods can only produce limited quality results with at most \mbox{$\text{256}^2$} resolution and the textual instructions are constrained in a small Corpus. In this work, we propose a unified framework for both face image generation and manipulation that produces diverse and high-quality images with an unprecedented resolution at 1024 from multimodal inputs. More importantly, our method supports open-world scenarios, including both image and text, without any re-training, fine-tuning, or post-processing. To be specific, we propose a brand new paradigm of text-guided image generation and manipulation based on the superior characteristics of a pretrained GAN model. Our proposed paradigm includes two novel strategies. The first strategy is to train a text encoder to obtain latent codes that align with the hierarchically semantic of the aforementioned pretrained GAN model. The second strategy is to directly optimize the latent codes in the latent space of the pretrained GAN model with guidance from a pretrained language model. The latent codes can be randomly sampled from a prior distribution or inverted from a given image, which provides inherent supports for both image generation and manipulation from multi-modal inputs, such as sketches or semantic labels, with textual guidance. To facilitate text-guided multi-modal synthesis, we propose the Multi-Modal CelebA-HQ, a large-scale dataset consisting of real face images and corresponding semantic segmentation map, sketch, and textual descriptions. Extensive experiments on the introduced dataset demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method. Code and data are available at https://github.com/weihaox/TediGAN.

TediGAN: Text-Guided Diverse Face Image Generation and Manipulation

In this work, we propose TediGAN, a novel framework for multi-modal image generation and manipulation with textual descriptions. The proposed method consists of three components: StyleGAN inversion module, visual-linguistic similarity learning, and instance-level optimization. The inversion module maps real images to the latent space of a well-trained StyleGAN. The visual-linguistic similarity learns the text-image matching by mapping the image and text into a common embedding space. The instance-level optimization is for identity preservation in manipulation. Our model can produce diverse and high-quality images with an unprecedented resolution at 1024. Using a control mechanism based on style-mixing, our TediGAN inherently supports image synthesis with multi-modal inputs, such as sketches or semantic labels, with or without instance guidance.

Probabilistic Modeling of Semantic Ambiguity for Scene Graph Generation

To generate "accurate" scene graphs, almost all existing methods predict pairwise relationships in a deterministic manner. However, we argue that visual relationships are often semantically ambiguous. Specifically, inspired by linguistic knowledge, we classify the ambiguity into three types: Synonymy Ambiguity, Hyponymy Ambiguity, and Multi-view Ambiguity. The ambiguity naturally leads to the issue of \emph{implicit multi-label}, motivating the need for diverse predictions. In this work, we propose a novel plug-and-play Probabilistic Uncertainty Modeling (PUM) module. It models each union region as a Gaussian distribution, whose variance measures the uncertainty of the corresponding visual content. Compared to the conventional deterministic methods, such uncertainty modeling brings stochasticity of feature representation, which naturally enables diverse predictions. As a byproduct, PUM also manages to cover more fine-grained relationships and thus alleviates the issue of bias towards frequent relationships. Extensive experiments on the large-scale Visual Genome benchmark show that combining PUM with newly proposed ResCAGCN can achieve state-of-the-art performances, especially under the mean recall metric. Furthermore, we prove the universal effectiveness of PUM by plugging it into some existing models and provide insightful analysis of its ability to generate diverse yet plausible visual relationships.

AACP: Model Compression by Accurate and Automatic Channel Pruning

Channel pruning is formulated as a neural architecture search (NAS) problem recently. However, existing NAS-based methods are challenged by huge computational cost and inflexibility of applications. How to deal with multiple sparsity constraints simultaneously and speed up NAS-based channel pruning are still open challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel Accurate and Automatic Channel Pruning (AACP) method to address these problems. Firstly, AACP represents the structure of a model as a structure vector and introduces a pruning step vector to control the compressing granularity of each layer. Secondly, AACP utilizes Pruned Structure Accuracy Estimator (PSAE) to speed up the performance estimation process. Thirdly, AACP proposes Improved Differential Evolution (IDE) algorithm to search the optimal structure vector effectively. Because of IDE, AACP can deal with FLOPs constraint and model size constraint simultaneously and efficiently. Our method can be easily applied to various tasks and achieve state of the art performance. On CIFAR10, our method reduces $65\%$ FLOPs of ResNet110 with an improvement of $0.26\%$ top-1 accuracy. On ImageNet, we reduce $42\%$ FLOPs of ResNet50 with a small loss of $0.18\%$ top-1 accuracy and reduce $30\%$ FLOPs of MobileNetV2 with a small loss of $0.7\%$ top-1 accuracy. The source code will be released after publication.

Augmenting Proposals by the Detector Itself

Lacking enough high quality proposals for RoI box head has impeded two-stage and multi-stage object detectors for a long time, and many previous works try to solve it via improving RPN's performance or manually generating proposals from ground truth. However, these methods either need huge training and inference costs or bring little improvements. In this paper, we design a novel training method named APDI, which means augmenting proposals by the detector itself and can generate proposals with higher quality. Furthermore, APDI makes it possible to integrate IoU head into RoI box head. And it does not add any hyperparameter, which is beneficial for future research and downstream tasks. Extensive experiments on COCO dataset show that our method brings at least 2.7 AP improvements on Faster R-CNN with various backbones, and APDI can cooperate with advanced RPNs, such as GA-RPN and Cascade RPN, to obtain extra gains. Furthermore, it brings significant improvements on Cascade R-CNN.

Controllable Continuous Gaze Redirection

In this work, we present interpGaze, a novel framework for controllable gaze redirection that achieves both precise redirection and continuous interpolation. Given two gaze images with different attributes, our goal is to redirect the eye gaze of one person into any gaze direction depicted in the reference image or to generate continuous intermediate results. To accomplish this, we design a model including three cooperative components: an encoder, a controller and a decoder. The encoder maps images into a well-disentangled and hierarchically-organized latent space. The controller adjusts the magnitudes of latent vectors to the desired strength of corresponding attributes by altering a control vector. The decoder converts the desired representations from the attribute space to the image space. To facilitate covering the full space of gaze directions, we introduce a high-quality gaze image dataset with a large range of directions, which also benefits researchers in related areas. Extensive experimental validation and comparisons to several baseline methods show that the proposed interpGaze outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of image quality and redirection precision.

Domain Fingerprints for No-reference Image Quality Assessment

Human fingerprints are detailed and nearly unique markers of human identity. Such a unique and stable fingerprint is also left on each acquired image. It can reveal how an image was degraded during the image acquisition procedure and thus is closely related to the quality of an image. In this work, we propose a new no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) approach called domain-aware IQA (DA-IQA), which for the first time introduces the concept of domain fingerprint to the NR-IQA field. The domain fingerprint of an image is learned from image collections of different degradations and then used as the unique characteristics to identify the degradation sources and assess the quality of the image. To this end, we design a new domain-aware architecture, which enables simultaneous determination of both the distortion sources and the quality of an image. With the distortion in an image better characterized, the image quality can be more accurately assessed, as verified by extensive experiments, which show that the proposed DA-IQA performs better than almost all the compared state-of-the-art NR-IQA methods.

Match4Rec: A Novel Recommendation Algorithm Based on Bidirectional Encoder Representation with the Matching Task

Characterizing users' interests accurately plays a significant role in an effective recommender system. The sequential recommender system can learn powerful hidden representations of users from successive user-item interactions and dynamic users' preferences. To analyze such sequential data, conventional methods mainly include Markov Chains (MCs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). Recently, the use of self-attention mechanisms and bi-directional architectures have gained much attention. However, there still exists a major limitation in previous works that they only model the user's main purposes in the behavioral sequences separately and locally, and they lack the global representation of the user's whole sequential behavior. To address this limitation, we propose a novel bidirectional sequential recommendation algorithm that integrates the user's local purposes with the global preference by additive supervision of the matching task. We combine the mask task with the matching task in the training process of the bidirectional encoder. A new sample production method is also introduced to alleviate the effect of mask noise. Our proposed model can not only learn bidirectional semantics from users' behavioral sequences but also explicitly produces user representations to capture user's global preference. Extensive empirical studies demonstrate our approach considerably outperforms various state-of-the-art models.

Cognitive Representation Learning of Self-Media Online Article Quality

The automatic quality assessment of self-media online articles is an urgent and new issue, which is of great value to the online recommendation and search. Different from traditional and well-formed articles, self-media online articles are mainly created by users, which have the appearance characteristics of different text levels and multi-modal hybrid editing, along with the potential characteristics of diverse content, different styles, large semantic spans and good interactive experience requirements. To solve these challenges, we establish a joint model CoQAN in combination with the layout organization, writing characteristics and text semantics, designing different representation learning subnetworks, especially for the feature learning process and interactive reading habits on mobile terminals. It is more consistent with the cognitive style of expressing an expert's evaluation of articles. We have also constructed a large scale real-world assessment dataset. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, and effectively learns and integrates different factors of the online article quality assessment.

Towards Multimodal Response Generation with Exemplar Augmentation and Curriculum Optimization

Recently, variational auto-encoder (VAE) based approaches have made impressive progress on improving the diversity of generated responses. However, these methods usually suffer the cost of decreased relevance accompanied by diversity improvements. In this paper, we propose a novel multimodal response generation framework with exemplar augmentation and curriculum optimization to enhance relevance and diversity of generated responses. First, unlike existing VAE-based models that usually approximate a simple Gaussian posterior distribution, we present a Gaussian mixture posterior distribution (i.e, multimodal) to further boost response diversity, which helps capture complex semantics of responses. Then, to ensure that relevance does not decrease while diversity increases, we fully exploit similar examples (exemplars) retrieved from the training data into posterior distribution modeling to augment response relevance. Furthermore, to facilitate the convergence of Gaussian mixture prior and posterior distributions, we devise a curriculum optimization strategy to progressively train the model under multiple training criteria from easy to hard. Experimental results on widely used SwitchBoard and DailyDialog datasets demonstrate that our model achieves significant improvements compared to strong baselines in terms of diversity and relevance.

Cooperative Semantic Segmentation and Image Restoration in Adverse Environmental Conditions

Most state-of-the-art semantic segmentation approaches only achieve high accuracy in good conditions. In practically-common but less-discussed adverse environmental conditions, their performance can decrease enormously. Existing studies usually cast the handling of segmentation in adverse conditions as a separate post-processing step after signal restoration, making the segmentation performance largely depend on the quality of restoration. In this paper, we propose a novel deep-learning framework to tackle semantic segmentation and image restoration in adverse environmental conditions in a holistic manner. The proposed approach contains two components: Semantically-Guided Adaptation, which exploits semantic information from degraded images to refine the segmentation; and Exemplar-Guided Synthesis, which restores images from semantic label maps given degraded exemplars as the guidance. Our method cooperatively leverages the complementarity and interdependence of low-level restoration and high-level segmentation in adverse environmental conditions. Extensive experiments on various datasets demonstrate that our approach can not only improve the accuracy of semantic segmentation with degradation cues, but also boost the perceptual quality and structural similarity of image restoration with semantic guidance.

HSCJN: A Holistic Semantic Constraint Joint Network for Diverse Response Generation

The sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) model generates target words iteratively given the previously observed words during decoding process, which results in the loss of the holistic semantics in the target response and the complete semantic relationship between responses and dialogue histories. In this paper, we propose a generic diversity-promoting joint network, called Holistic Semantic Constraint Joint Network (HSCJN), enhancing the global sentence information, and then regularizing the objective function with penalizing the low entropy output. Our network introduces more target information to improve diversity, and captures direct semantic information to better constrain the relevance simultaneously. Moreover, the proposed method can be easily applied to any Seq2Seq structure. Extensive experiments on several dialogue corpuses show that our method effectively improves both semantic consistency and diversity of generated responses, and achieves better performance than other competitive methods.

Unsupervised Multi-Domain Multimodal Image-to-Image Translation with Explicit Domain-Constrained Disentanglement

Image-to-image translation has drawn great attention during the past few years. It aims to translate an image in one domain to a given reference image in another domain. Due to its effectiveness and efficiency, many applications can be formulated as image-to-image translation problems. However, three main challenges remain in image-to-image translation: 1) the lack of large amounts of aligned training pairs for different tasks; 2) the ambiguity of multiple possible outputs from a single input image; and 3) the lack of simultaneous training of multiple datasets from different domains within a single network. We also found in experiments that the implicit disentanglement of content and style could lead to unexpect results. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for learning to generate diverse outputs using unpaired training data and allow simultaneous training of multiple datasets from different domains via a single network. Furthermore, we also investigate how to better extract domain supervision information so as to learn better disentangled representations and achieve better image translation. Experiments show that the proposed method outperforms or is comparable with the state-of-the-art methods.
