Gravitational Wave Signal for Quark Matter with Realistic Phase Transition

The cores of neutron stars (NSs) near the maximum mass realize the most highly compressed matter in the universe where quark degrees of freedom may be liberated. Such a state of dense matter is hypothesized as quark matter (QM) and its presence has awaited to be confirmed for decades in nuclear physics. Gravitational waves from binary NS mergers are expected to convey useful information called the equation of state (EOS). However, the signature for QM with realistic EOS is not yet established. Here, we show that the gravitational wave in the post-merger stage can distinguish the theory scenarios with and without a transition to QM. Instead of adopting specific EOSs as studied previously, we compile reliable EOS constraints from the ab initio approaches. We demonstrate that early collapse to a black hole after NS merger signifies softening of the EOS associated with the onset of QM in accord with ab initio constraints. Nature of hadron-quark phase transition can be further constrained by the condition that electromagnetic counterparts need to be energized by the material left outside the remnant black hole.

Equation of state of cold and dense QCD matter in resummed perturbation theory

We discuss the Hard Dense Loop resummation at finite quark mass and evaluate the equation of state (EoS) of cold and dense QCD matter in $β$ equilibrium. The resummation in the quark sector has an effect of lowering the baryon number density and the EoS turns out to have much smaller uncertainty than the perturbative QCD estimate. Our numerical results favor smooth matching between the EoS from the resummed QCD calculation at high density and the extrapolated EoS from the nuclear matter density region. We also point out that the speed of sound in our EoS slightly exceeds the conformal limit.

Topological confinement of vortices in two-flavor dense QCD

We find a novel confinement mechanism in the two-flavor dense quark matter proposed recently, that consists of the 2SC condensates and the $P$-wave diquark condensates of $d$-quarks. This quark matter exhibiting color superconductivity as well as superfluidity is classified into two phases; confined and deconfined phases of vortices. We establish that the criterion of the confinement is color neutrality of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phases: vortices exhibiting color non-singlet AB phases are confined by the so-called AB defects to form color-singlet bound states. In the deconfined phase, the most stable vortices are non-Abelian Alice strings, which are superfluid vortices with fractional circulation and non-Abelian color magnetic fluxes therein, exhibiting color non-singlet AB phases. On the other hand, in the confined phase, these non-Abelian vortices are confined to either a baryonic or mesonic bound state in which constituent vortices are connected by AB defects. The baryonic bound state consists of three non-Abelian Alice strings with different color magnetic fluxes with the total flux canceled out connected by a domain wall junction, while the mesonic bound state consists of two non-Abelian Alice strings with the same color magnetic fluxes connected by a single domain wall. Interestingly, the latter contains a color magnetic flux in its core, but this can exist because of color neutrality of its AB phase.

Alice meets Boojums in neutron stars: vortices penetrating two-flavor quark-hadron continuity

Alice and Boojums are both representative characters created by Lewis Carroll. We show that they possibly meet in cores of rotating neutron stars. Recent studies of quark-hadron continuity suggest that neutron superfluid matter can connect smoothly to two-flavor symmetric quark matter at high densities. We study how this can be maintained in the presence of the vortices. In the neutron matter, quantized superfluid vortices arise. In the two-flavor dense quark matter, vortices carrying color magnetic fluxes together with fractionally quantized superfluid circulations appear as the most stable configuration, and we call these as the non-Abelian Alice strings. We show that three integer neutron superfluid vortices and three non-Abelian Alice strings of different color magnetic fluxes with total color flux canceled out are joined at a junction called a Boojum.

Non-Abelian Alice strings in two-flavor dense QCD

Quark-hadron continuity with two-flavor quarks that was proposed recently connects hadronic matter with neutron $^3P_2$ superfluidity and two-flavor dense quark matter. This two-flavor dense quark phase consists of the coexistence of the 2SC condensates and the $P$-wave diquark condensates of $d$-quarks, which gives rise to color superconductivity as well as superfluidity. We classify vortices in this phase. The most stable vortices are what we call the non-Abelian Alice strings, which are superfluid vortices with non-Abelian color magnetic fluxes therein, exhibiting so-called topological obstruction, or a non-Abelian generalization of the Alice property. We show that a single Abelian superfluid vortex is unstable against decay into three non-Abelian Alice strings. We discover that a non-Abelian Alice string carries orientational moduli of the real projective space $\mathbb{R}P^2$ corresponding to the color flux therein in the presence of the $P$-wave condensates alone. We calculate Aharanov-Bohm (AB) phases around the non-Abelian Alice string, and find that the 2SC condensates and string's orientational moduli must be aligned with each other because of single-valuedness of the AB phases of the 2SC condensates.

Deconfining Phase Boundary of Rapidly Rotating Hot and Dense Matter and Analysis of Moment of Inertia

We discuss the effect of rapid rotation on the phase diagram of hadronic matter. The energy dispersion relation is shifted by an effective chemical potential induced by rotation. This suggests that rotation should lower the critical temperature of chiral restoration, but it is still controversial how the deconfinement temperature should change as a function of angular velocity. We adopt the hadron resonance gas model as an approach free from fitting parameters. We identify the deconfinement from the thermodynamic behavior and find that rotation decreases the deconfinement temperature. We also discuss the spatial inhomogeneity of the pressure and give a semi-quantitative estimate of the moment of inertia.

Extensive Studies of the Neutron Star Equation of State from the Deep Learning Inference with the Observational Data Augmentation

We discuss deep learning inference for the neutron star equation of state (EoS) using the real observational data of the mass and the radius. We make a quantitative comparison between the conventional polynomial regression and the neural network approach for the EoS parametrization. For our deep learning method to incorporate uncertainties in observation, we augment the training data with noise fluctuations corresponding to observational uncertainties. Deduced EoSs can accommodate a weak first-order phase transition, and we make a histogram for likely first-order regions. We also find that our observational data augmentation has a byproduct to tame the overfitting behavior. To check the performance improved by the data augmentation, we set up a toy model as the simplest inference problem to recover a double-peaked function and monitor the validation loss. We conclude that the data augmentation could be a useful technique to evade the overfitting without tuning the neural network architecture such as inserting the dropout.

Continuity from neutron matter to color-superconducting quark matter with $^3 P_2$ superfluidity

I clarify how the concept of quark-hadron continuity, which was previously considered in the context of the asymptotic color-flavor locked phase with ideal three-flavor symmetry, is applied to two-flavor matter. Our observation is that neutron star matter can continuously be connected to two-flavor color-superconducting (2SC) phase with an additional condensate of $d$-quarks in the $^3P_2$ channel. I discuss here two aspects of this novel phase. First, I introduce the notion of continuity based on the patterns of symmetry breaking and the corresponding order parameters, and then explain qualitatively the physics mechanism of $d$-quark $^3P_2$ pairing in analogy to nuclear physics. Our finding serves as the theoretical underpinning for the phenomenological construction of the equation of state in the neutron star environment.

Mapping neutron star data to the equation of state using the deep neural network

The densest state of matter in the universe is uniquely realized inside central cores of the neutron star. While first-principles evaluation of the equation of state of such matter remains as one of the longstanding problems in nuclear theory, evaluation in light of neutron star phenomenology is feasible. Here we show results from a novel theoretical technique to utilize deep neural network with supervised learning. We input up-to-date observational data from neutron star X-ray radiations into the trained neural network and estimate a relation between the pressure and the mass density. Our results are consistent with extrapolation from the conventional nuclear models and the experimental bound on the tidal deformability inferred from gravitational wave observation.

Continuity from neutron matter to two-flavor quark matter with $^1 S_0$ and $^3 P_2$ superfluidity

This study is performed with the aim of gaining insights into the possible applicability of the quark-hadron continuity concept, not only in the idealized case of three-flavor symmetric quark matter, but also for the transition from neutron matter to two-flavor quark matter. A key issue is the continuity between neutron superfluidity and a corresponding superfluid quark phase produced by $d$-quark pairing. Symmetry arguments are developed and relevant dynamical mechanisms are analyzed. It is pointed out that the $^3P_2$ superfluidity in dense neutron matter has a direct analogue in the $^3P_2$ pairing of $d$-quarks in two-flavor quark matter. This observation supports the idea that the quark-hadron continuity hypothesis may be valid for such systems. Possible implications for neutron stars are briefly discussed.

Methodology study of machine learning for the neutron star equation of state

We discuss a methodology of machine learning to deduce the neutron star equation of state from a set of mass-radius observational data. We propose an efficient procedure to deal with a mapping from finite data points with observational errors onto an equation of state. We generate training data and optimize the neural network. Using independent validation data (mock observational data) we confirm that the equation of state is correctly reconstructed with precision surpassing observational errors. We finally discuss the relation between our method and Bayesian analysis with an emphasis put on generality of our method for underdetermined problems.

A Neural Network model with Bidirectional Whitening

We present here a new model and algorithm which performs an efficient Natural gradient descent for Multilayer Perceptrons. Natural gradient descent was originally proposed from a point of view of information geometry, and it performs the steepest descent updates on manifolds in a Riemannian space. In particular, we extend an approach taken by the "Whitened neural networks" model. We make the whitening process not only in feed-forward direction as in the original model, but also in the back-propagation phase. Its efficacy is shown by an application of this "Bidirectional whitened neural networks" model to a handwritten character recognition data (MNIST data).
