Value-Based Large Language Model Agent Simulation for Mutual Evaluation of Trust and Interpersonal Closeness

Large language models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful tools for simulating complex social phenomena using human-like agents with specific traits. In human societies, value similarity is important for building trust and close relationships; however, it remains unexplored whether this principle holds true in artificial societies comprising LLM agents. Therefore, this study investigates the influence of value similarity on relationship-building among LLM agents through two experiments. First, in a preliminary experiment, we evaluated the controllability of values in LLMs to identify the most effective model and prompt design for controlling the values. Subsequently, in the main experiment, we generated pairs of LLM agents imbued with specific values and analyzed their mutual evaluations of trust and interpersonal closeness following a dialogue. The experiments were conducted in English and Japanese to investigate language dependence. The results confirmed that pairs of agents with higher value similarity exhibited greater mutual trust and interpersonal closeness. Our findings demonstrate that the LLM agent simulation serves as a valid testbed for social science theories, contributes to elucidating the mechanisms by which values influence relationship building, and provides a foundation for inspiring new theories and insights into the social sciences.

Bipedal Robot Running: Human-like Actuation Timing Using Fast and Slow Adaptations

We have been developing human-sized biped robots based on passive dynamic mechanisms. In human locomotion, the muscles activate at the same rate relative to the gait cycle during running. To achieve adaptive running for robots, such characteristics should be reproduced to yield the desired effect, In this study, we designed a central pattern generator (CPG) involving fast and slow adaptation to achieve human-like running using a simple spring-mass model and our developed bipedal robot, which is equipped with actuators that imitate the human musculoskeletal system. Our results demonstrate that the CPG-based controller with fast and slow adaptations, and a adjustable actuator control timing can reproduce human-like running. The results suggest that the CPG contributes to the adjustment of the muscle activation timing in human running.

Pink-noise dynamics in an evolutionary game on a regular graph

We consider an iterated multiplayer prisoner's dilemma game on a square lattice and regular graphs based on the pairwise-Fermi update rule, and obtain heat-maps of the fraction of cooperators and the correlation of neighboring pairs. In the heat-map, there is a mixed region where cooperators and defectors coexist, and in the mixed region the correlation between neighbors is enhanced. Moreover, we observe pink-noise behavior in the mixed region, where the power spectrum can be fitted by a power-law function of frequency. We also find that the pink-noise behavior can be reproduced in a simple random-walk model. In particular, we propose a modified random-walk model which can reproduce not only the pink-noise behavior but also the deviation from it observed in a low-frequency region.
