High-Precision Near-Infrared Abundances of Solar Analogs in the YJ Bands

We present a near-infrared abundance analysis of 46 solar analogs with known ages, observed with the WINERED WIDE-mode spectrograph at a resolution of $λ/Δλ= 28,000$. Using an empirically calibrated, line-by-line approach in the $YJ$ bands (0.976--1.089 and 1.182--1.319~{$μ$}m), we derive abundances for 16 elements. Despite the intrinsic weakness of near-infrared phosphorus diagnostics, the combination of five P\,{\sc i} lines yields a typical uncertainty half-width of $\sim$0.04~dex, providing an estimate of the internal precision over the solar-analog sample. For other elements, the internal precision ranges from $\sim$0.01~dex for Fe and Si to over 0.05--0.14~dex for elements with only a couple of lines available. The resulting per-object abundances for various elements are consistent with previous measurements using high-precision optical spectra with residuals of 0.03--0.2~dex depending on the element. The inferred age--[X/Fe] relations reproduce known trends for the thin disk, while extending them to elements difficult to access in the optical, including P and K. We find the slope of the age--[P/Fe] relation is steeper than that for $α$ elements, which provides an empirical constraint for future modeling of Galactic phosphorus evolution. In addition, we publish a high signal-to-noise (S/N 500--1000) reference spectrum constructed by combining solar-analog spectra, together with the spectra of individual stars, and an empirically calibrated line list with per-line zero-point corrections, for future near-infrared spectroscopic studies.

Kinematical and dynamical properties of recently discovered bulge and disc star clusters with WINERED

Context. Galactic globular clusters are a very important tool in explaining the characteristics of the Milky Way. Therefore it is essential to determine the kinematical and dynamical properties of the new star cluster candidates, especially at the low-latitude regions that suffer from heavy extinction and crowding. Aims. In this work, we report the first spectroscopic analysis for seven recently identified star cluster candidates: CWNU 4193, FSR 1700, Garro 02, Patchick 98, FSR 1767, Mercer 08, and BH 140. Our aim is to determine the kinematical properties, such as the mean cluster radial velocity, and the dynamical properties, such as the orbital parameters and the global dynamical mass, of these clusters in order to spectroscopically confirm the nature of these seven stellar systems. Methods. We collected the high-resolution infrared spectra of 33 candidate members of these clusters using the WINERED spectrograph mounted on the Magellan Clay 6.5 m telescope. Using the WINERED spectra, we measured the radial velocity of each individual star to confirm its membership in the clusters. From the confirmed members, we derived the mean cluster radial velocity of each cluster. In addition, for these clusters, we computed the orbital elements using the GravPot16 model and estimated their global dynamical masses based on the virial theorem. Results. As a result, we confirmed enough member stars (from three to seven stars per cluster) to reliably derive the mean cluster radial velocity and compute the orbital parameters of the clusters CWNU 4193, FSR 1700, Garro 02, and BH 140. For clusters CWNU 4193, FSR 1700, and BH 140, the number of confirmed members also allowed us to estimate their global dynamical masses. Therefore, we successfully derived key kinematical and dynamical properties for four of the most obscured star clusters in the Milky Way.

Assessing robustness and bias in 1D retrievals of 3D Global Circulation Models at high spectral resolution: a WASP-76 b simulation case study in emission

High-resolution spectroscopy (HRS) of exoplanet atmospheres has successfully detected many chemical species and is quickly moving toward detailed characterization of the chemical abundances and dynamics. HRS is highly sensitive to the line shape and position, thus, it can detect three-dimensional (3D) effects such as winds, rotation, and spatial variation of atmospheric conditions. At the same time, retrieval frameworks are increasingly deployed to constrain chemical abundances, pressure-temperature (P-T) structures, orbital parameters, and rotational broadening. To explore the multidimensional parameter space, they need computationally fast models that are consequently mostly one-dimensional (1D). However, this approach risks introducing interpretation bias since the planet's true nature is 3D. We investigate the robustness of this methodology at high spectral resolution by running 1D retrievals on simulated observations in emission within an observational framework using 3D Global Circulation Models of the quintessential HJ WASP-76 b. We find that the retrieval broadly recovers conditions present in the atmosphere, but that the retrieved P-T and chemical profiles are not a homogeneous average of all spatial and phase-dependent information. Instead, they are most sensitive to spatial regions with large thermal gradients, which do not necessarily coincide with the strongest emitting regions. Our results further suggest that the choice of parameterization for the P-T and chemical profiles, as well as Doppler offsets among opacity sources, impact retrieval results. These factors should be carefully considered in future retrieval analyses.

First Result for Dark Matter Search by WINERED

The identity of dark matter has been a mystery in astronomy, cosmology, and particle theory for about a century. Bessho, Ikeda, and Yin (2022), three of the current authors, proposed using the state-of-the-art infrared spectrographs, including WINERED at $6.5$m Magellan Clay telescope and NIRSpec at James Webb Space Telescope, as efficient detectors for the indirect detection of dark matter with the mass around eV by measuring the line photons from the dark matter two body decays. Applying this concept, we have performed spectrographic observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) Leo V and Tucana II using WINERED by utilizing an object-sky-object nodding observation technique for background subtraction. We present the first result from this dark matter search. Employing zero consistent flux data after the sky subtraction, we have established one of the most stringent limits to date on dark matter decaying into line photons in the mass range of $1.8-2.7\,$eV. Our data can also be applied to constrain other spectra of photons from the dSphs.

A High-Resolution Non-Detection of Escaping Helium In The Ultra-Hot Neptune LTT 9779b: Evidence for Weakened Evaporation

The recent discovery of ``ultra-hot'' ($P < 1$ day) Neptunes has come as a surprise: some of these planets have managed to retain gaseous envelopes despite being close enough to their host stars to trigger strong photoevaporation and/or Roche lobe overflow. Here, we investigate atmospheric escape in LTT 9779b, an ultra-hot Neptune with a volatile-rich envelope. We observed two transits of this planet using the newly-commissioned WINERED spectrograph ($R\sim68,000$) on the 6.5 m Clay/Magellan II Telescope, aiming to detect an extended upper atmosphere in the He 10830 A triplet. We found no detectable planetary absorption: in a 0.75 A passband centered on the triplet, we set a 2$σ$ upper limit of 0.12% ($δR_p/H < 14$) and a 3$σ$ upper limit of 0.20% ($δR_p/H < 22$). Using a H/He isothermal Parker wind model, we found corresponding 95% and 99.7% upper limits on the planetary mass-loss rate of $\dot{M} < 10^{10.03}$ g s$^{-1}$ and $\dot{M} < 10^{11.11}$ g s$^{-1}$ respectively, smaller than predicted by outflow models even considering the weak stellar XUV emission. The low evaporation rate is plausibly explained by a metal-rich envelope, which would decrease the atmospheric scale height and increase the cooling rate of the outflow. This hypothesis is imminently testable: if metals commonly weaken planetary outflows, then we expect that \textit{JWST} will find high atmospheric metallicities for small planets that have evaded detection in He 10830 A.

A Very Metal-poor RR Lyrae Star with a Disk Orbit Found in the Solar Neighborhood

Metal-deficient stars are important tracers for understanding the early formation of the Galaxy. Recent large-scale surveys with both photometric and spectroscopic data have reported an increasing number of metal-deficient stars whose kinematic features are consistent with those of the disk stellar populations. We report the discovery of an RR~Lyrae variable (hereafter RRL) that is located within the thick disk and has an orbit consistent with the thick-disk kinematics. Our target RRL (HD 331986) is located at around 1 kpc from the Sun and, with V=11.3, is among the 130 brightest RRLs known so far. However, this object was scarcely studied because it is in the midplane of the Galaxy, the Galactic latitude around -1 deg. Its near-infrared spectrum (0.91-1.32 micron) shows no absorption line except hydrogen lines of the Paschen series, suggesting [Fe/H] less than -2.5. It is the most metal-deficient RRL, at least, among the RRLs whose orbits are consistent with the disk kinematics, although we cannot determine to which of the disk and the halo it belongs. This unique RRL would provide us with essential clues for studying the early formation of stars in the inner Galaxy with further investigations, including high-resolution optical spectroscopy.

Relationship between Radar Cross Section and Optical Magnitude based on Radar and Optical Simultaneous Observations of Faint Meteors

Radar and optical simultaneous observations of meteors are important to understand the size distribution of the interplanetary dust. However, faint meteors detected by high power large aperture radar observations, which are typically as faint as 10 mag. in optical, have not been detected until recently in optical observations, mainly due to insufficient sensitivity of the optical observations. In this paper, two radar and optical simultaneous observations were organized. The first observation was carried out in 2009 to 2010 using Middle and Upper Atmosphere Radar (MU radar) and an image-intensified CCD camera. The second observation was carried out in 2018 using the MU radar and a mosaic CMOS camera, Tomo-e Gozen, mounted on the 1.05-m Kiso Schmidt Telescope. In total, 331 simultaneous meteors were detected. The relationship between radar cross sections and optical V-band magnitudes was well approximated by a linear function. A transformation function from the radar cross section to the V-band magnitude was derived for sporadic meteors. The transformation function was applied to about 150,000 meteors detected by the MU radar in 2009--2015, large part of which are sporadic, and a luminosity function was derived in the magnitude range of $-1.5$ to $9.5$ mag. The luminosity function was well approximated by a single power-law function with the population index of $r = 3.52{\pm}0.12$. The present observation indicates that the MU radar has capability to detect interplanetary dust of $10^{-5}$ to $10^{0}$ g in mass as meteors.

An optical search for transients lasting a few seconds

Using a prototype of the Tomo-e Gozen wide-field CMOS mosaic camera, we acquire wide-field optical images at a cadence of 2 Hz and search them for transient sources of duration 1.5 to 11.5 seconds. Over the course of eight nights, our survey encompasses the equivalent of roughly two days on one square degree, to a fluence equivalent to a limiting magnitude about $V = 15.6$ in a 1-second exposure. After examining by eye the candidates identified by a software pipeline, we find no sources which meet all our criteria. We compute upper limits to the rate of optical transients consistent with our survey, and compare those to the rates expected and observed for representative sources of ephemeral optical light.

New constraint on the atmosphere of (50000) Quaoar from a stellar occultation

We report observations of a stellar occultation by the classical Kuiper belt object (50000) Quaoar occurred on 28 June 2019. A single-chord high-cadence (2 Hz) photometry dataset was obtained with the Tomo-e Gozen CMOS camera mounted on the 1.05 m Schmidt telescope at Kiso Observatory. The obtained ingress and egress data do not show any indication of atmospheric refraction and allow to set new $1σ$ and $3σ$ upper limits of 6 and 16 nbar, respectively, for the surface pressure of a pure methane atmosphere. These upper limits are lower than the saturation vapor pressure of methane at Quaoar's expected mean surface temperature ($T \sim 44$ K) and imply the absence of a $\sim$10 nbar-level global atmosphere formed by methane ice on Quaoar's surface.

Physical properties of near-Earth asteroids with a low delta-${\it v}$: Survey of target candidates for the Hayabusa2 mission

Sample return from the near-Earth asteroid known as 25143 Itokawa was conducted as part of the Hayabusa mission, with a large number of scientific findings being derived from the returned samples. Following the Hayabusa mission, Hayabusa2 was planned, targeting sample return from a primitive asteroid. The primary target body of Hayabusa2 was asteroid 162173 Ryugu; however, it was also necessary to gather physical information for backup target selection. Therefore, we examined five asteroids spectroscopically, 43 asteroids spectrophotometrically, and 41 asteroids through periodic analysis. Hence, the physical properties of 74 near-Earth asteroids were obtained, which helped the Hayabusa2 backup target search and, also, furthered understanding of the physical properties of individual asteroids and their origins.

Luminosity Function of Faint Sporadic Meteors measured with a Wide-Field CMOS mosaic camera Tomo-e PM

Imaging observations of faint meteors were carried out on April 11 and 14, 2016 with a wide-field CMOS mosaic camera, Tomo-e PM, mounted on the 105-cm Schmidt telescope at Kiso Observatory, the University of Tokyo. Tomo-e PM, which is a prototype model of Tomo-e Gozen, can monitor a sky of ${\sim}1.98\,\mathrm{deg^2}$ at 2\,Hz. The numbers of detected meteors are 1514 and 706 on April 11 and 14, respectively. The detected meteors are attributed to sporadic meteors. Their absolute magnitudes range from $+4$ to $+10\,\mathrm{mag}$ in the $V$-band, corresponding to about $8.3{\times}10^{-2}$ to $3.3{\times}10^{-4}\,\mathrm{g}$ in mass. The present magnitude distributions we obtained are well explained by a single power-law luminosity function with a slope parameter $r = 3.1{\pm}0.4$ and a meteor rate $\log_{10}N_0 = -5.5{\pm}0.5$. The results demonstrate a high performance of telescopic observations with a wide-field video camera to constrain the luminosity function of faint meteors. The performance of Tomo-e Gozen is about two times higher than that of Tomo-e PM. A survey with Tomo-e Gozen will provide a more robust measurement of the luminosity function.

Ground-based lightcurve observation campaign of (25143) Itokawa between 2001 and 2004

The asteroid (25143) Itokawa is a target object of the Japanese sample return mission, HAYABUSA. We have observed Itokawa in optical wave- length (R-band) with the 1.05-m Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory, the 2.24-m telescope of University of Hawaii, and the 1.05-m telescope at the Misato Observatory since 2001. From the analysis of the data, we present the relationship between brightness and the solar phase angle, 6.9 to 87.8 deg. We obtained the absolute magnitude H_R(0) = 19.09+-0.37, and the slope parameter G_R = 0.25 +- 0.29. The rotational period of Itokawa is 12.1324 +- 0.0001 hours.

OISTER Optical and Near-Infrared Monitoring Observations of a Peculiar Radio-Loud Active Galactic Nucleus SDSS J110006.07+442144.3

We present monitoring campaign observations at optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths for a radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z=0.840, SDSS~J110006.07+442144.3 (hereafter, J1100+4421), which was identified during a flare phase in late February, 2014. The campaigns consist of three intensive observing runs from the discovery to March, 2015, mostly within the scheme of the OISTER collaboration. Optical-NIR light curves and simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are obtained. Our measurements show the strongest brightening in March, 2015. We found that the optical-NIR SEDs of J1100+4421 show an almost steady shape despite the large and rapid intranight variability. This constant SED shape is confirmed to extend to $\sim5~μ$m in the observed frame using the archival WISE data. Given the lack of absorption lines and the steep power-law spectrum of $α_ν\sim-1.4$, where $f_ν\proptoν^{α_ν}$, synchrotron radiation by a relativistic jet with no or small contributions from the host galaxy and the accretion disk seems most plausible as an optical-NIR emission mechanism. The steep optical-NIR spectral shape and the large amplitude of variability are consistent with this object being a low $ν_{\rm{peak}}$ jet-dominated AGN. In addition, sub-arcsec resolution optical imaging data taken with Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam does not show a clear extended component and the spatial scales are significantly smaller than the large extensions detected at radio wavelengths. The optical spectrum of a possible faint companion galaxy does not show any emission lines at the same redshift and hence a merging hypothesis for this AGN-related activity is not supported by our observations.

Organized Autotelescopes for Serendipitous Event Survey (OASES): design and performance

Organized Autotelescopes for Serendipitous Event Survey (OASES) is an optical observation project that aims to detect and investigate stellar occultation events by kilometer-sized trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). In this project, multiple low-cost observation systems for wide-field and high-speed photometry were developed in order to detect rare and short-timescale stellar occultation events. The observation system consists of commercial off-the-shelf $0.28 \ {\rm m}$ aperture $f/1.58$ optics providing a $2.3 \times 1.8$ square-degree field of view. A commercial CMOS camera is coupled to the optics to obtain full-frame imaging with a frame rate greater than $10 \ {\rm Hz}$. As of September 2016, this project exploits two observation systems, which are installed on Miyako Island, Okinawa, Japan. Recent improvements in CMOS technology in terms of high-speed imaging and low readout noise mean that the observation systems are capable of monitoring $\sim 2000$ stars in the Galactic plane simultaneously with magnitudes down to ${\rm V} \sim 13.0$, providing $\sim 20\%$ photometric precision in light curves with a sampling cadence of $15.4 \ {\rm Hz}$. This number of monitored stars is larger than for any other existing instruments for coordinated occultation surveys. In addition, a precise time synchronization method needed for simultaneous occultation detection is developed using faint meteors. The two OASES observation systems are executing coordinated monitoring observations of a dense stellar field in order to detect occultations by kilometer-sized TNOs for the first time.

Broad-Lined Supernova 2016coi with Helium Envelope

We present the early-phase spectra and the light curves of the broad-lined supernova (SN) 2016coi from $t=7$ to $67$ days after the estimated explosion date. This SN was initially reported as a broad-lined Type SN Ic (SN Ic-BL). However, we found that spectra up to $t=12$ days exhibited the He~{\sc i} $λ$5876, $λ$6678, and $λ$7065 absorption lines. We show that the smoothed and blueshifted spectra of normal SNe Ib are remarkably similar to the observed spectrum of SN 2016coi. The line velocities of SN 2016coi were similar to those of SNe Ic-BL and significantly faster than those of SNe Ib. Analyses of the line velocity and light curve suggest that the kinetic energy and the total ejecta mass of SN 2016coi are similar to those of SNe Ic-BL. Together with broad-lined SNe 2009bb and 2012ap for which the detection of He~{\sc i} were also reported, these SNe could be transitional objects between SNe Ic-BL and SNe Ib, and be classified as broad-lined Type `Ib' SNe (SNe `Ib'-BL). Our work demonstrates the diversity of the outermost layer in broad-lined SNe, which should be related to the variety of the evolutionary paths.

2014-2015 Multiple Outbursts of 15P/Finlay

Multiple outbursts of a Jupiter-family comet, 15P/Finlay, occurred from late 2014 to early 2015. We conducted an observation of the comet after the first outburst and subsequently witnessed another outburst on 2015 January 15.6-15.7. The gas, consisting mostly of C2 and CN, and dust particles expanded at speeds of 1,110 +/- 180 m/s and 570 +/- 40 m/s at a heliocentric distance of 1.0 AU. We estimated the maximum ratio of solar radiation pressure with respect to the solar gravity beta_max = 1.6 +/- 0.2, which is consistent with porous dust particles composed of silicates and organics. We found that 10^8-10^9 kg of dust particles (assumed to be 0.3 micron - 1 mm) were ejected through each outburst. Although the total mass is three orders of magnitude smaller than that of the 17P/Holmes event observed in 2007, the kinetic energy per unit mass (104 J/kg) is equivalent to the estimated values of 17P/Holmes and 332P/2010 V1 (Ikeya-Murakami), suggesting that the outbursts were caused by a similar physical mechanism. From a survey of cometary outbursts on the basis of voluntary reports, we conjecture that 15P/Finlay-class outbursts occur >1.5 times annually and inject dust particles from Jupiter-family comets and Encke-type comets into interplanetary space at a rate of ~10 kg/s or more.

Detection of Remnant Dust Cloud Associated with the 2007 Outburst of 17P/Holmes

This paper reports a new optical observation of 17P/Holmes one orbital period after the historical outburst event in 2007. We detected not only a common dust tail near the nucleus, but also a long narrow structure that extended along the position angle 274.6+/- 0.1 degree beyond the field of view of the Kiso Wide Field Camera, i.e., >0.2 degree eastward and >2.0 degree westward from the nuclear position. The width of the structure decreased westward with increasing distance from the nucleus. We obtained the total cross section of the long extended structure in the field of view, C= (2.3 +/- 0.5)x10^10 m^2. From the position angle, morphology and the mass, we concluded that the long narrow structure consists of materials ejected during the 2007 outburst. On the basis of the dynamical behavior of dust grains in the solar radiation field, we estimated that the long narrow structure would be composed of 1 mm-1 cm grains having an ejection velocity of >50 m/s. The velocity was more than one order of magnitude faster than that of millimeter - centimeter grains from typical comets around a heliocentric distance rh of 2.5 AU. We considered that sudden sublimation of a large amount of water ice (about 10^30 mol/s) would be responsible for the high ejection velocity. We finally estimated a total mass of M=(4-8)x10^11 kg and a total kinetic energy of E=(1-6)x10^15 J for the 2007 outburst ejecta, which are consistent with those of previous studies that conducted soon after the outburst.

Optical and Near-Infrared Polarimetry for a Highly Dormant Comet 209P/LINEAR

We conducted an optical and near-infrared polarimetric observation of the highly dormant Jupiter-Family Comet, 209P/LINEAR. Because of its low activity, we were able to determine the linear polarization degrees of the coma dust particles and nucleus independently, that is $P_n$=30.3$^{+1.3}_{-0.9}$% at $α$=92.2$^\circ$ and $P_n$=31.0$^{+1.0}_{-0.7}$% at $α$=99.5$^\circ$ for the nucleus, and $P_c$=28.8$^{+0.4}_{-0.4}$% at $α$=92.2$^\circ$ and 29.6$^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$% at $α$=99.5$^\circ$ for the coma. We detected no significant variation in $P$ at the phase angle coverage of 92.2$^\circ$-99.5$^\circ$, which may imply that the obtained polarization degrees are nearly at maximum in the phase-polarization curves. By fitting with an empirical function, we obtained the maximum values of linear polarization degrees $P_\mathrm{max}$=30.8% for the nucleus and $P_\mathrm{max}$=29.6% for the dust coma. The $P_\mathrm{max}$ of the dust coma is consistent with those of dust-rich comets. The low geometric albedo of $P_v$=0.05 was derived from the slope-albedo relationship and was associated with high $P_\mathrm{max}$. We examined $P_\mathrm{max}$-albedo relations between asteroids and 209P, and found that the so-called Umov law seems to be applicable on this cometary surface.
