Emergence of soft quark excitations by the coupling with a soft mode of the QCD critical point

We study the quark spectrum at nonzero temperature and density near the critical point (CP) of the chiral phase transition incorporating effects of the scalar- and pseudoscalar-density fluctuations in a chiral effective model with a nonzero current quark mass. It is known that the soft mode associated with the second-order transition at the CP lies in the spacelike region of the scalar-density fluctuation. We find that the soft mode influences the quark spectrum significantly near the CP, resulting in the shift of the quasiquark peak. Effects of the composite stable pions on the quark spectrum near the CP are also discussed.

Possible generation of anomalously soft quark excitations at nonzero temperature: Nonhyperbolic dispersion of parapion and van Hove singularity

We study the quark spectrum at finite temperature near and above the pseudocritical temperature of the chiral phase transition incorporating the effects of the collective modes with the quantum number of the sigma (parasigma) and pion (parapion) in a chiral effective model with a nonzero current quark mass. Below the pion zero-binding temperature where the pionic modes are bound, the quark self-energy has van Hove singularity induced by the scattering of quarks with the composite bound pions with a nonhyperbolic dispersion curve. This singularity is found to cause a drastic change in the quark spectrum from that in the mean field picture near the pseudocritical temperature: The quark spectrum has an unexpected sharp peak at an energy considerably lower than the constituent quark mass, while the spectrum approaches the mean field one at high temperatures. We clarify that the emergence of this anomalous structure of the quark spectral function originates from the composite nature of the pionic modes with a non-Lorentz invariant dispersion relation in the medium at finite temperature.

Quasifermion spectrum at finite temperature from coupled Schwinger-Dyson equations for a fermion-boson system

We nonperturbatively investigate a fermion spectrum at finite temperature in a chiral invariant linear sigma model. Coupled Schwinger-Dyson equations for fermion and boson are developed in the real time formalism and solved numerically. From the coupling of a massless fermion with a massive boson, the fermion spectrum shows a three-peak structure at some temperatures even for the strong coupling region. This means that the three-peak structure which was originally found in the one-loop calculation is stable against higher order corrections even in the strong coupling region.

Spectral properties of massless and massive quarks coupled with massive boson at finite temperature

We study the properties of massless and massive quarks coupled with a scalar and pseudoscalar boson at finite temperature in Yukawa models at the one-loop order. The behavior of the spectral function and the pole structure of the propagator are analyzed as functions of temperature $T$ and the quark mass $m_f$. It is shown that the three-peak structure of the spectral function found in a previous work for massless quarks is formed at temperatures comparable to the boson mass even for finite $m_f$, but gradually ceases to exist as $m_f$ becomes larger. We identify the three poles of the quark propagator corresponding to the collective excitations of the quark in the complex energy plane. It is shown that the three trajectories made by the poles along with a variation of $T$ undergo a structural rearrangement at a critical quark mass when $m_f$ is increased. This suggests that the physics content of the collective quark excitations is changed in a drastic way at this point. The results are nicely accounted for with the notion of the level mixing induced by a resonant scattering of the massive boson with quarks and holes of thermally excited anti-quarks.

Quasi-quark spectrum in the chiral symmetric phase from the Schwinger-Dyson equation

We non-perturbatively study the fermion spectrum in the chiral symmetric phase from the Schwinger-Dyson equation with the Feynman gauge, in which we perform an analytic continuation of the solution on the imaginary time axis to the real time axis with a method employing an integral equation. It is shown that the fermion spectrum has two peaks, which correspond to the normal quasi-fermion and the plasmino, although these peaks in the strong coupling region are very broad, owing to multiple scatterings with gauge bosons. We find that the thermal mass of the quasi-fermion saturates at some value of the gauge coupling, beyond which the thermal (pole) mass satisfies $M \sim T$, independently of the value of the gauge coupling. We also comment on the appearance of a three-peak structure in the fermion spectrum as a non-perturbative effect.

How do diquark fluctuations and chiral soft modes affect di-lepton production in the deconfined phase?

We examine diquark fluctuations and chiral soft modes existing in the precritical region of color superconductivity and chiral transition, respectively, at finite temperature and density. We evaluate how they contribute to anomalous di-lepton production; although there appear peaks in the spectral function owing to the existence of the soft modes, the enhancement of the production rate may not be so prominent to be a clear signal of the phsase transitions.

Fluctuations of the chiral condensate and quasi-particle spectra near phase transition

We investigate the quark spectrum near but above the critical temperature of the chiral transition, taking into account the precursory soft modes. It is found that there appear novel excitation spectra of quasi-quarks and quasi-antiquarks with a three-peak structure. By a detailed analysis on the formation of the three-peak structure using Yukawa models, it is shown that the new quark spectra originate from the mixing between a quark (anti-quark) and an antiquark hole (quark hole) caused by a resonant scattering of the quasi-quark with the soft modes which have a small but finite excitation energy with a small width near the critical temperature.

Further Analysis of Excitations of Quarks at Finite Temperature -- Mass Effect and Pole Structure --

We calculate the spectral function of the massive quark at finite temperature (T) using a Yukawa model and show that the peak in the negative energy region among the three-peaks found in a previous work for the massless quark is largely suppressed. To explore the underlying mechanism of this behavior, we also investigate the pole structure of the retarded Green function of the quark. We will show the result only for the massless quark. We find the residues of the poles corresponding the three-peaks are all comparable at $T\sim m_b$. We also show that the multi-peak structure of the quark spectra is well described in the pole approximation which indicates that the quasi-paricle picture is valid in this $T$ region.

Fermionic Collective Modes in QGP near Critical Temperatures

We investigate the quark spectrum in the quark-gluon plasma phase near color superconducting (CS) and chiral phase transitions. Owing to the precursory soft modes of the phase transitions, there appear novel excitaion spectra: In the CS transition, the quark matter shows non-Fermi liquid behavior and leads to the pseudogap in the density of states of quarks. In the chiral transition, three collective excitations appear in the quark spectrum.

Quark spectrum above the critical temperature from Schwinger-Dyson equation

We investigate a spectrum of a fermion, which we call a quark, above the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition in a gauge theory using the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation. The SD equation enables us to study the spectrum over a wide range of the gauge coupling. It is shown that the quark spectrum has two sharp peaks which correspond to the normal quasi-quark and the plasmino and is consistent with that obtained in the hard thermal loop approximation in the weak coupling region, while it has also two peaks but with smaller thermal masses and broader widths in the strong coupling region. Temperature-dependence of the quark spectrum is also discussed.

Novel Collective Excitations and the Quasi-Particle Picture of Quarks Coupled with a Massive Boson at Finite Temperature

Motivated by the observation that there may exist hadronic excitations even in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase, we investigate how the properties of quarks, especially within the quasi-particle picture, are affected by the coupling with bosonic excitations at finite temperature (T), employing Yukawa models with a massive scalar (pseudoscalar) and vector (axial-vector) boson of mass m. The quark spectral function and the quasi-dispersion relations are calculated at one-loop order. We find that there appears a three-peak structure in the quark spectral function with a collective nature when T is comparable with m, irrespective of the type of boson considered. Such a multi-peak structure was first found in a chiral model yielding scalar composite bosons with a decay width. We elucidate the mechanism through which the new quark collective excitations are realized in terms of the Landau damping of a quark (an antiquark) induced by scattering with the thermally excited boson, which gives rise to mixing and hence a level repulsion between a quark (antiquark) and an antiquark-hole (quark-hole) in the thermally excited antiquark (quark) distribution. Our results suggest that the quarks in the QGP phase can be described within an interesting quasi-particle picture with a multi-peak spectral function. Because the models employed here are rather generic, our findings may represent a universal phenomenon for fermions coupled to a massive bosonic excitation with a vanishing or small width. The relevance of these results to other fields of physics, such as neutrino physics, is also briefly discussed. In addition, we describe a new aspect of the plasmino excitation obtained in the hard-thermal loop approximation.

Quasiparticle picture of quarks near chiral transition at finite temperature

We investigate, using a chiral effective model, the quark spectrum in the critical region of the chiral transition focusing on the effect of the possible mesonic excitations in the quark-gluon plasma phase. We find that there appears a novel three-peak structure in the quark spectra. We elucidate the mechanism of the appearance of the multi-peak structure with the help of a Yukawa model with an elementary boson.

Quark Spectrum above but near Critical Temperature of Chiral Transition

We explore the quark properties at finite temperature near but above the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition. We investigate the effects of the precursory soft mode of the phase transition on the quark dispersion relation and the spectral function. It is found that there appear novel excitation spectra of quasi-quarks and quasi-antiquarks with a three-peak structure, which are not attributed to the hard-thermal-loop approximation. We show that the new spectra originate from the mixing between a quark (anti-quark) and an anti-quark hole (quark hole) caused by a ``resonant scattering'' of the quasi-fermions with the thermally-excited soft mode which has a small but finite excitation energy.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior Induced by Resonant Diquark-pair Scattering in Heated Quark Matter

We show how the quasiparticle picture of quarks changes near but above the critical temperature T_c of the color-superconducting phase transition in the heated quark matter. We demonstrate that a non-Fermi liquid behavior of the matter develops drastically when the diquark coupling constant is increased owing to the coupling of the quark with the pairing soft mode: We clarify that the depression and eventually the appearance of a gap structure in the spectral function as well as the anomalous quark dispersion relation of the quark can be understood in terms of the resonant scattering between the incident quark and a particle near the Fermi surface to make the pairing soft mode.

Quasiparticle Picture of Quarks near Chiral Phase Transition

We study how the quasiparticle picture of the quark can be modified near but above the critical tempearture (Tc) of the chiral phase transition; we incorporate into the quark self-energy the effects of the precursory soft modes of the phase transition, i.e., `para-σ(π) meson'. It is found that the quark spectrum has a three-peak structure near Tc: We show that the additional new spectra originate from the mixing between a quark (anti-quark) and an anti-quark hole (quark hole) caused by a ``resonant scattering'' of the quasi-fermions with the thermally-excited soft modes.

Anisotropic lattice QCD study of pentaquark baryons in spin 3/2 channel

We perform the comprehensive analysis of the pentaquark (5Q) in J^P=3/2^{\pm} channel using anisotropic quenched lattice QCD. We employ the standard Wilson gauge action at β=5.75 and the O(a) improved Wilson (clover) quark action on a 12^3*96 lattice with the renormalized anisotropy as a_s/a_t = 4. A large number of gauge configurations as Nconf=1000 is analyzed, which is found to be essential to achieve a reliable measurement. We study three types of the Rarita-Schwinger intepolationg fields with I=0: (a) the NK*-type, (b) the (color-)twisted NK*-type, (c) a diquark-type. As a result, we find only massive states as m(5Q)= 2.1-2.2 GeV in J^P=3/2^- channel, and m(5Q) = 2.4-2.6 GeV in J^P=3/2^+ channel in the chiral limit. The analysis with the hybrid boundary condition (HBC) is performed to distinguish whether these resonances are compact 5Q resonances or two-particle scattering states. No low-lying compact 5Q resonance states are found below 2.1GeV.

Pre-critical Phenomena of Two-flavor Color Superconductivity in Heated Quark Matter -- diquark-pair fluctuations and non-Fermi liquid behavior --

We investigate the fluctuations of the diquark-pair field and their effects on observables above the critical temperature $T_c$ in two-flavor color superconductivity (CSC) at moderate density using a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-type effective model of QCD. Because of the strong-coupling nature of the dynamics, the fluctuations of the pair field develop a collective mode, which has a prominent strength even well above T_c. We show that the collective mode is actually the soft mode of CSC. We examine the effects of the pair fluctuations on the specific heat and the quark spectrum for T above but close to T_c. We find that the specific heat exhibits singular behavior because of the pair fluctuations, in accordance with the general theory of second-order phase transitions. The quarks display a typical non-Fermi liquid behavior, owing to the coupling with the soft mode, leading to a pseudo-gap in the density of states of the quarks in the vicinity of the critical point. Some experimental implications of the precursory phenomena are also discussed.

Quark Spectrum near Chiral Transition Points

Near the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition, a collective excitation due to fluctuation of the chiral order parameter appears. We investigate how it affects the quark spectrum near but above the critical temperature. The calculated spectral function has many peaks. We show this behavior can be understood in terms of resonance scatterings of a quark off the collective mode.
