Finite Size Effects of the Surface States in a Lattice Model of Topological Insulator

Energy gap and wave function in thin films of topological insulator is studied, based on tight--binding model. It is revealed that thickness dependence of the magnitude of energy gap is composed of damping and oscillation. The damped behavior originates from the presence of gapless surface Dirac cone in the infinite thickness limit. On the other hand, the oscillatory behavior stems from electronic properties in the thin thickness limit.

Evolution of Edge States and Critical Phenomena in the Rashba Superconductor with Magnetization

We study Andreev bound states (ABS) and resulting charge transport of Rashba superconductor (RSC) where two-dimensional semiconductor (2DSM) heterostructures is sandwiched by spin-singlet s-wave superconductor and ferromagnet insulator. ABS becomes a chiral Majorana edge mode similar to that in spinless chiral p-wave pairing in topological phase (TP). We clarify that two types of quantum criticality about the topological change of ABS near a quantum critical point (QCP), whether ABS exists at QCP or not. In the former type, ABS has a energy gap and does not cross at zero energy in non-topological phase (NTP). These complex properties can be detected by tunneling conductance between normal metal / RSC junctions.

Topological Superconductivity in CuxBi2Se3

A topological superconductor (TSC) is characterized by the topologically-protected gapless surface state that is essentially an Andreev bound state consisting of Majorana fermions. While a TSC has not yet been discovered, the doped topological insulator CuxBi2Se3, which superconducts below ~3 K, has been predicted to possess a topological superconducting state. We report that the point-contact spectra on the cleaved surface of superconducting CuxBi2Se3 present a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) which signifies unconventional superconductivity. Theoretical considerations of all possible superconducting states help us conclude that this ZBCP is due to Majorana Fermions and gives evidence for a topological superconductivity in CuxBi2Se3. In addition, we found an unusual pseudogap that develops below ~20 K and coexists with the topological superconducting state.

Symmetry and Topology in Superconductors - Odd-frequency pairing and edge states -

Superconductivity is a phenomenon where the macroscopic quantum coherence appears due to the pairing of electrons. This offers a fascinating arena to study the physics of broken gauge symmetry. However, the important symmetries in superconductors are not only the gauge invariance. Especially, the symmetry properties of the pairing, i.e., the parity and spin-singlet/spin-triplet, determine the physical properties of the superconducting state. Recently it has been recognized that there is the important third symmetry of the pair amplitude, i.e., even or odd parity with respect to the frequency. The conventional uniform superconducting states correspond to the even-frequency pairing, but the recent finding is that the odd-frequency pair amplitude arises in the spatially non-uniform situation quite ubiquitously. Especially, this is the case in the Andreev bound state (ABS) appearing at the surface/interface of the sample. The other important recent development is on the nontrivial topological aspects of superconductors. As the band insulators are classified by topological indices into (i) conventional insulator, (ii) quantum Hall insulator, and (iii) topological insulator, also are the gapped superconductors. The influence of the nontrivial topology of the bulk states appears as the edge or surface of the sample. In the superconductors, this leads to the formation of zero energy ABS (ZEABS). Therefore, the ABSs of the superconductors are the place where the symmetry and topology meet each other which offer the stage of rich physics. In this review, we discuss the physics of ABS from the viewpoint of the odd-frequency pairing, the topological bulk-edge correspondence, and the interplay of these two issues. It is described how the symmetry of the pairing and topological indices determines the absence/presence of the ZEABS, its energy dispersion, and properties as the Majorana fermions.

Spectrum of Andreev bound states in Josepshon junctions with a ferromagnetic insulator

Ferromagnetic-insulator (FI) based Josephson junctions are promising candidates for a coherent superconducting quantum bit as well as a classical superconducting logic circuit. Recently the appearance of an intriguing atomic-scale 0-pi transition has been theoretically predicted. In order to uncover the mechanism of this phenomena, we numerically calculate the spectrum of Andreev bound states in a FI barrier by diagonalizing the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We show that Andreev spectrum drastically depends on the parity of the FI-layer number L and accordingly the pi (0) state is always more stable than the 0 (pi) state if L is odd (even).

Theory of the beta-type Organic Superconductivity under Uniaxial Compression

We study theoretically the shift of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) under uniaxial compression in beta-type organic superconductors, beta-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 and beta-(BDA-TTP)2X[X=SbF6,AsF6], in order to clarify the electron correlation, the spin frustration and the effect of dimerization. The transfer integrals are calculated by the extended Huckel method assuming the uniaxial strain and the superconducting state mediated by the spin fluctuation is solved using Eliashberg's equation with the fluctuation-exchange approximation. The calculation is carried out on both the dimerized (one-band) and nondimerized (two-band) Hubbard models. We have found that (i) the behavior of Tc in beta-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 with a stronger dimerization is well reproduced by the dimer model, while that in weakly dimerized beta-BDA-TTP salts is rather well reproduced by the two-band model, and (ii) the competition between the spin frustration and the effect induced by the fluctuation is important in these materials, which causes nonmonotonic shift of Tc against uniaxial compression.

Anomalous Surface Impedance due to Odd-frequency Cooper Pairs

We discuss dynamical response of odd-frequency Cooper pairs to electromagnetic field. By using the quasiclassical Green function method, we calculate the surface impedance (Z=R-iX) of a normal metal thin film which covers a superconductor. In contrast to the standard relation (i.e., R << X), the surface impedance in spin-triplet proximity structures shows anomalous behavior (i.e., R>X) at low temperatures. This unusual relation is a result of the penetration of odd-frequency pairs into the normal metal and reflects the negative Cooper pair density.

Theory of edge states in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator/ spin-singlet s-wave superconductor hybrid system

We study the edge states for a quantum anomalous Hall system (QAHS) coupled with a spin-singlet s-wave superconductor through the proximity effect, and clarify the topological nature of them. When we consider a superconducting pair potential induced in the QAHS, there appear topological phases with nonzero Chern numbers, $i.e.$, ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$, where Andreev bound states appear as chiral Majorana edge modes. We calculate the energy spectrum of the edge modes and the resulting local density of states. It is found that the degenerate chiral Majorana edge modes for ${\cal N}=2$ are lifted off by applying Zeeman magnetic field along the parallel to the interface or the shift of the chemical potential by doping. The degeneracy of the chiral Majorana edge modes and its lifting are explained by two different winding numbers defined at the time-reversal invariant point of the edge momentum.

Edge states of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ detected by in-plane tunneling spectroscopy

We perform tunneling spectroscopy of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ searching for the edge states peculiar to topological superconductivity. Conductance spectra obtained on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$/Au junctions fabricated using $in$ $situ$ process show broad humps indicating the successful detection of a-axis edge of 1.5K phase. Three types of peak shape are detected: domelike peak, split peak and two-step peak. By comparing the experiments with predictions for unconventional superconductivity, these varieties are shown to originate from multiband chiral p-wave symmetry with weak anisotropy of pair amplitude. The broad hump in conductance spectrum is a direct manifestation of the edge state peculiar to the chiral p-wave superconductivity.

Pairing symmetry of superconductivity coexisting with antiferromagnetism

Pairing symmetry in the superconducting state coexisting with antiferromagnetic order is studied based on a microscopic theory. We calculate the linearized Eliashberg's equation within the random phase approximation in the Hubbard model with a staggered field. We find that odd-frequency spin-triplet (equal-spin) s-wave pairing state can be realized. This result contradicts a naive expectation that antiferromagnetic order induces antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and favors spin-singlet d-wave pairing as in the standard strongly correlated systems.

Atomic scale 0-pi transition in a high-Tc superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator/high-T superconductor Josephson junction

We study the Josephson transport in a high-Tc superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator(FI)/high-Tc superconductor numerically. We found the formation of a pi-junction in such systems. More remarkably the ground state of such junction alternates between 0- and pi-states when thickness of FI is increasing by a single atomic layer. We propose an experimental setup for observing the atomic-scale 0-pi transition. Such FI-based pi-junctions can be used to implement highly-coherent quantum bits.

Anomalous Meissner effect in NS junction with spin-active interface

We investigate Meissner effect in normal metal/superconductor junctions where the interface is spin-active. We find that orbital magnetic susceptibility of the normal metal shows highly nontrivial behaviors. In particular, the magnetic susceptibility depends on the temperature in an oscillatory fashion, accompanied by its sign change. Correspondingly, magnetic field and current density can spatially oscillate in the normal metal. The possible spontaneous formation of the current pattern is also discussed. These results are attributed to the generation of odd-frequency pairing due to the spin-active interface.

Topology of Andreev Bound States with Flat Dispersion

A theory of dispersionless Andreev bound states on surfaces of time-reversal invariant unconventional superconductors is presented. The generalized criterion for the dispersionless Andreev bound state is derived from the bulk-edge correspondence, and the chiral spin structure of the dispersionless Andreev bound states is argued from which the Andreev bound state is stabilized. Then we summarize the criterion in a form of index theorems. The index theorems are proved in a general framework to certify the bulk-edge correspondence. As concrete examples, we discuss (i) dxy-wave superconductor (ii) px-wave superconductor, and (iii) noncentrosymmetric superconductors. In the last example, we find a peculiar time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion. The time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion shows an unusual response to the Zeeman magnetic field, which can be used to identify it experimentally.

Tunneling Hamiltonian description of the atomic-scale 0-pi transition in superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator junctions

We show a perturbation theory of the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs). Recently we have found that the appearance of the atomic scale 0-pi transition in such junctions based on numerical calculations. In order to explore the mechanism of this anomalous transition, we have analytically calculated the Josephson current using the tunneling Hamiltonian theory and found that the spin dependent pi-phase shift in the FI barrier gives the atomic scale 0-pi transition.

Surface density of states and topological edge states in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We study Andreev bound state (ABS) and surface density of state (SDOS) of non-centrosymmetric superconductor where spin-singlet $d$-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet $p$ (or $f)$-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For $d_{xy} + p$-wave pairing, ABS appears as a zero energy state. The present ABS is a Majorana edge mode preserving the time reversal symmetry. We calculate topological invariant number and discuss the relevance to a single Majorana edge mode. In the presence of the Majorana edge mode, the SDOS depends strongly on the direction of the Zeeman field.

Thermally induced 0-pi phase transition in Josephson junctions through a ferromagnetic oxide film

We investigate the Josephson transport through a ferromagnetic oxide film, e.g., La$_2$BaCuO$_5$, theoretically. Using the recursive Green's function technique, we found the formation of a pi-junction in such systems. Moreover the 0-pi phase transition is induced by increasing the temperature. Such ferromagnetic-oxide based Josephson junctions may become an element in the architecture of future quantum computers.

Anomalous Andreev bound state in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We study edge states of non-centrosymmetric superconductors where spin-singlet d-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet p (or f)-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For dxy-wave pairing, the obtained Andreev bound state has an anomalous dispersion as compared to conventional helical edge modes. A unique topologically protected time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion appears at the edge. The charge conductance in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor junctions reflects the anomalous structures of the dispersions, particularly the time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion is manifested as a zero bias conductance peak.

Realization of Berezinskii's superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional systems

We revisit the pairing symmetry competition in quasi-one-dimensional systems. We show that spin-triplet s-wave pairing, where the pair is formed by electrons with different times and has an odd-frequency symmetry, can be realized in systems with strong one-dimensionality when the strength of charge fluctuation dominates over spin fluctuation. The present study provides a novel microscopic mechanism for this exotic pairing originally proposed by Berezinskii in 1974.
