Odd-frequency pairing in a nonunitary p-wave superconductor with multiple Majorana fermions

Odd-frequency Cooper pairs are gathering attention for the convenience of investigating the edge state of topological superconductors including Majorana fermions. Although a spinless p-wave superconductor has only one Majorana fermion in a topological phase, the system with magnetic fields can reach the topological phases with multiple Majorana fermions. To distinguish these multiple Majorana fermion phases, we correlate the energy spectrum with the odd-frequency pair amplitude as increasing the system size. The system size dependence tells us three pieces of information: the parity of the number of the Majorana fermions at the edge, the number of low-energy modes corresponding to the Majorana fermions with different localization lengths, and the fingerprints of the Majorana fermions. Also, we present the spatial dependence of the odd-frequency f vector that is created from odd-frequency pair amplitude and the spin structure of odd-frequency Cooper pairs. We find that the odd-frequency f vector is fixed in the same direction in any topological phase. Also, we show that the spin state of odd-frequency Cooper pairs tends to be oriented toward the direction of the magnetic fields. Our results highlight the odd-frequency Cooper pairs can be a good indicator for the detection of the multiple Majorana fermions and the distinction among the topological phases.

Quasiparticle spectrum in mesoscopic superconducting junctions with weak magnetization

We theoretically investigate the effects of the weak magnetization on the local density of states of mesoscopic proximity structures, where two superconducting terminals are attached to a side surface of the diffusive ferromagnet wire with a phase difference. When there is no phase difference, the local density of states is significantly modified by the magnetization in both spin-singlet $s$-wave and spin-triplet $p$-wave cases. When the phase difference is $π$, the local density of stets is less modified by the magnetization compared with the in-phase case because of the destructive interference of Cooper pairs.

Identifying Majorana bound states at quantum spin Hall edges using a metallic probe

We study the conductance afforded by a normal-metal probe which is directly contacting the helical edge modes of a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI). We show a $2e^2/h$ conductance peak at zero temperature in QSHI-based superconductor--ferromagnet hybrids due to the formation of a single Majorana bound state (MBS). In a corresponding Josephson junction hosting a pair of MBSs, a $4e^2/h$ conductance peak is found at zero temperature. The conductance quantization is robust to changes of the relevant system parameters and, remarkably, remains unaltered with increasing the distance between probe and MBSs. In the low temperature limit, the conductance peak is robust as the probe is placed within the localization length of MBSs. Our findings can therefore provide an effective way to detect the existence of MBSs in QSHI systems.

Spin susceptibility for orbital-singlet Cooper pair in the three-dimensional Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor

We study the spin susceptibility of the orbital-singlet pairings, including the spin-triplet/orbital-singlet/$s$-wave $E_g$ representation proposed by Suh \textit{et al}., [H.\ G.\ Suh \textit{et al}., Phys.\ Rev.\ Research \textbf{2}, 032023 (2020)], for a three-orbital model of superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in three dimensions. For the pseudospin-singlet states represented in the band basis, the spin susceptibility decreases when reducing the temperature, irrespective of the direction of the applied magnetic fields, even if they are spin-triplet/orbital-singlet pairings in the spin-orbital space. However, because the pseudospin-triplet \textbf{d}-vector in the band basis is not completely aligned in the $xy$-plane (along $z$-axis) owing to the strong atomic spin-orbit coupling, the spin susceptibility for spin-singlet/orbital-singlet/odd-parity pairings is reduced around $5$-$10$ percent with the decrease of the temperature along the $z$ ($x$) axis. We can determine the symmetry of the pseudospin structure of the Cooper pair by the temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility measured by nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. Our obtained results serve as a guide to determine the pairing symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Possible topological phases in quantum anomalous Hall insulator/unconventional superconductor hybrid systems

Quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAH)/$s$-wave superconductor (SC) hybrid systems are known to be an ideal platform for realizing two-dimensional topological superconductors with chiral Majorana edge modes. In this paper we study QAH/unconventional SC hybrid systems whose pairing symmetry is $p$-wave, $d$-wave, chiral $p$-wave, or chiral $d$-wave. The hybrid systems are a generalization of the QAH/$s$-wave SC hybrid system. In view of symmetries of the QAH and pairings, we introduce three topological numbers to classify topological phases of the hybrid systems. One is the Chern number that characterizes chiral Majorana edge modes and the others are topological numbers associated with crystalline symmetries. We numerically calculate the topological numbers and associated surface states for three characteristic regimes that feature an influence of unconventional SCs on QAHs. Our calculation shows a rich variety of topological phases and unveils the following topological phases that are no counterpart of the $s$-wave case: crystalline symmetry-protected helical Majorana edge modes, a line node phase (crystalline-symmetry-protected Bogoliubov Fermi surface), and multiple chiral Majorana edge modes. The phenomena result from a nontrivial topological interplay between the QAH and unconventional SCs. Finally, we discuss tunnel conductance in a junction between a normal metal and the hybrid systems, and show that the chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are distinguishable in terms of the presence/absence of zero-bias conductance peak.

Flat-band Majorana bound states in topological Josephson junctions

Nodal topological superconductors characterized by $p_x$-wave pairing symmetry host flat-band Majorana bound states causing drastic anomalies in low-energy electromagnetic responses. Nevertheless, the study of flat-band Majorana bound states has been at a standstill owing to a serious lack of candidate materials for $p_x$-wave superconductors. In this paper, by expanding a scheme of planar topological Josephson junctions, we propose a promising device realizing an effective $p_x$-wave superconductor. Specifically, we consider a three-dimensional Josephson junction consisting of a thin-film semiconductor hosting a persistent spin-helix state and two conventional $s$-wave superconductors. We analytically obtain a topological phase diagram and numerically demonstrate the emergence of flat-band Majorana bound states by calculating the local density of states.

Generalization of spectral bulk-boundary correspondence

The bulk-boundary correspondence in one dimension asserts that the physical quantities defined in the bulk and at the edge are connected, as well established in the argument for electric polarization. Recently, a spectral bulk-boundary correspondence (SBBC), an extended version of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence to energy-dependent spectral functions, such as Green's functions, has been proposed in chiral symmetric systems, in which the chiral operator anticommutes with the Hamiltonian. In this study, we extend the SBBC to a system with impurity scattering and dynamical self-energies, regardless of the presence or absence of a gap in the energy spectrum. Moreover, the SBBC is observed to hold even in a system without chiral symmetry, which substantially generalizes its concept. The SBBC is demonstrated with concrete models, such as superconducting nanowires and a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Its potential applications and certain remaining issues are also discussed.

Anisotropic supercurrent due to inhomogeneous magnetization in ferromagnet/superconductor junctions

We investigate transverse charge and spin dc supercurrents in a ferromagnet coupled to a superconductor where the ferromagnet has inhomogeneous magnetic structure. These transverse supercurrents arise from non-trivial structure of the magnetization. The magnetic structure manifested in the transverse charge supercurrent is essentially different from that discussed in the context of anomalous Hall effect, reflecting the disspationless nature of supercurrent. Possible candidates of magnetic structure to verify our prediction are also discussed.

Theory of pair density wave on a quasi-one-dimensional lattice in the Hubbard model

In this study, we examine the superconducting instability of a quasi-one-dimensional lattice in the Hubbard model based on the random-phase approximation (RPA) and the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation. We find that a spin-singlet pair density wave (PDW-singlet) with a center-of-mass momentum of $2k_F$ can be stabilized when the one-dimensionality becomes prominent toward the perfect nesting of the Fermi surface. The obtained pair is a mixture of even-frequency and odd-frequency singlet ones. The dominant even-frequency component does not have nodal lines on the Fermi surface. This PDW-singlet state is more favorable as compared to RPA when self-energy correction is introduced in the FLEX approximation.

Generation of odd-frequency surface superconductivity with spontaneous spin current due to the zero-energy Andreev bound state

We propose that the odd-frequency $s$ wave ($s^{\rm{odd}}$ wave) superconducting gap function, which is usually unstable in the bulk, naturally emerges at the edge of $d$ wave superconductors. This prediction is based on the surface spin fluctuation pairing mechanism owing to the zero-energy surface Andreev bound state. The interference between bulk and edge gap functions triggers the $d+s^{\rm{odd}}$ state, and the generated spin current is a useful signal uncovering the ``hidden'' odd-frequency gap. In addition, the edge $s^{\rm{odd}}$ gap can be determined via the proximity effect on the diffusive normal metal. Furthermore, this study provides a decisive validation of the ``Hermite odd-frequency gap function,'' which has been an open fundamental challenge to this field.

Fingerprints of possible even-parity superconducting states in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ detected by planar tunneling spectroscopy

After more than 25 years of research, three even-parity superconducting states -- the $d+id$-wave, $d+ig$-wave, and $s+id$-wave states -- have emerged as leading candidates for the superconducting states of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In the present work, we propose a tunneling spectroscopy experiment for distinguishing among these three superconducting states. The key component of our proposal is that we examine the conductance spectra of normal-metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junctions with various angles between the junction interface and the crystal axis of the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The angle dependence of the conductance spectra shows a unique pattern in each superconducting state, which can function as a fingerprint for verifying the pairing symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Observation of domain wall bimerons in chiral magnets

Topological defects embedded in or combined with domain walls have been proposed in various systems, some of which are referred to as domain wall skyrmions or domain wall bimerons. However, the experimental observation of such topological defects remains an ongoing challenge. Here, using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we report the experimental discovery of domain wall bimerons in chiral magnet Co-Zn-Mn(110) thin films. By applying a magnetic field, multidomain structures develop, and simultaneously, chained and isolated bimerons arise as the localized state between the domains with the opposite in-plane components of net magnetization. The multidomain formation is attributed to magnetic anisotropy and dipolar interaction, and domain wall bimerons are stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In addition, micromagnetic simulations show that domain wall bimerons appear for a wide range of conditions in chiral magnets with cubic magnetic anisotropy. Our results promote further study in various fields of physics.

Optical Responses of Chiral Majorana Edge States in Two-Dimensional Topological Superconductors

Majorana fermions exist on the boundaries of two-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs) as charge-neutral quasi-particles. The neutrality makes the detection of such states challenging from both experimental and theoretical points of view. Current methods largely rely on transport measurements in which Majorana fermions manifest themselves by inducing electron-pair tunneling at the lead-contacting point. Here we show that chiral Majorana fermions in TSCs generate {enhanced} local optical response. The features of local optical conductivity distinguish them not only from trivial superconductors or insulators but also from normal fermion edge states such as those in quantum Hall systems. Our results provide a new applicable method to detect dispersive Majorana fermions and may lead to a novel direction of this research field.

Tunnelling conductance of $d+ip$-wave superconductor

We theoretically investigate the tunneling conductance of the $d+ip$-wave superconductor which is recently proposed to be realised at the (110) surface of a high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor. Utilizing the quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we obtain the self-consistent pair potentials and the differential conductance of the normal-metal/$d+ip$-wave superconductor junction. We demonstrate that the zero-bias peak of a $d$-wave superconductor is robust against the spin-triplet $p$-wave surface subdominant order even though it is fragile against the spin-singlet $s$-wave one. Comparing our numerical results and the experimental results, we conclude the spin-triplet $p$-wave surface subdominant order is feasible.

Edge-induced pairing states in a Josephson junction through a spin-polarized quantum anomalous Hall insulator

Despite the robustness of the chiral edge modes of quantum Hall systems against the superconducting proximity effect, Cooper pairs can penetrate into the chiral edge channels and carry the Josephson current in an appropriate setup. In our work, the Josephson junction of a spin-polarized quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) with a Chern number $ν=1$ connecting conventional superconductors is studied from the perspective of pairing symmetry consistent with the chiral edge mode. Induced pairing states are equal-spin triplet, a combination of the even- and odd-frequency components, nonlocally extended, and have a finite momentum $2k_F$. The signature of the equal-spin triplet pairings is confirmed via the dependence on the interface-magnetization direction, and that of the finite-momentum pairing states via the spatial profile of the anomalous Green's function. In the presence of disorder, the robustness of the chiral edge mode leads to high sensitivity of the critical current and the equilibrium phase difference to disorder configurations, which is resulting from the interference of current-carrying channels. The numerical calculations on a lattice model are also examined by a simplified analytical model.

Thermoelectric detection of Andreev states in unconventional superconductors

We theoretically describe a thermoelectric effect that is entirely due to Andreev processes involving the formation of Cooper pairs through the coupling of electrons and holes. The Andreev thermoelectric effect can occur in ballistic ferromagnet-superconductor junctions with a dominant superconducting proximity effect on the ferromagnet, and it is very sensitive to surface states emerging in unconventional superconductors. We consider hybrid junctions in two and three dimensions to demonstrate that the thermoelectric current is always reversed in the presence of low-energy Andreev bound states at the superconductor surface. A microscopic analysis of the proximity-induced pairing reveals that the thermoelectric effect only arises if even and odd-frequency Cooper pairs coexist in mixed singlet and triplet states. Our results are an example of the richness of emergent phenomena in systems that combine magnetism and superconductivity, and they open a pathway for exploring exotic surface states in unconventional superconductors.

Impact of impurity scattering on odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing near the edge of the Kitaev chain

We study a Kitaev chain model, which is the simplest model of topological superconductors hosting Majorana fermion, appearing as a zero-energy state at the edge. We analytically calculate the Green's function of the semi-infinite Kitaev chain with a delta-function-type impurity potential within the quasi-classical regime to obtain the spatial dependence of the induced odd-frequency pairing. It is found that if the position of the impurity is not far from the edge, the spatial profile of the local density of states (LDOS) and the odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave pair amplitude is tunable as a function of the strength of the impurity potential. Moreover, the zero-energy LDOS and low-frequency odd-frequency pair amplitude are found to have the same spatial dependence. The spatial profile of the zero-energy LDOS is analyzed based on the wave function of Majorana fermions.

Anomalous inverse proximity effect in unconventional-superconductor junctions

We investigate the effects of Andreev bound states due to the unconventional pairing on the inverse proximity effect of ferromagnet/superconductor junctions. Utilizing quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we obtain the magnetization penetrating into the superconductor. We show that in a wide parameter range the direction of the induced magnetization is determined by two factors: whether Andreev bound states are present at the junction interface and the sign of the spin-mixing angle. In particular, when Andreev bound states appear at the interface, the direction of the induced magnetization is opposite to that without Andreev bound states. We also clarify the conditions under which the inverted induced magnetization appears. Applying this novel effect helps distinguishing the pairing symmetry of a superconductor.
