Speed of Light in Gravitational Fields

A spherically symmetric and static metric that describes physical coordinates is introduced. It is defined to be a metric that gives coordinate independent results for physically observable quantities without a further coordinate transformation. The suggested metric also makes a prediction for the second order gravitational red shift effect that can be utilized for a precision experimental test in the future. A possible new experimental test would be provided by a modern Michelson Morley experiment on the earth with the two arms in vertical and horizontal directions to see the validity of isotropy or anisotropy for the speed of light. The possibility of using pulsars and GPS (Global Positioning System) for a general relativity test is discussed.

Axisymmetric Galaxy Distribution and the Center of the Universe

The validity of Hubble's law defies the determination of the center of the big bang expansion, even if it exists. Every point in the expanding universe looks like the center from which the rest of the universe flies away. In this article, the author shows that the distribution of apparently circular galaxies is not uniform in the sky and that there exists a special direction in the universe in our neighborhood. The data is consistent with the assumption that the tidal force due to the mass distribution around the universe center causes the deformation of galactic shapes depending on its orientation and location relative to the center and our galaxy. The location of the center is estimated to be at a distance ~0.88/h Gpc in the direction of l=135 +/- 30 degrrs and b = -35 +/- 20 degrees in galactic coordinates (alpha = 01h 36m, delta = +26d 50m in equatorial J2000.0 or in the direction of the Constellation Pisces). Further study of the deformation of galaxies such as triaxial galaxies and non-axisymmetric spiral galaxies can be utilized for a more accurate determination of the universe center.

Cosmic Rays, Gamma Rays and Neutrinos from Point Sources

The suggestion has been made that the energy spectrum from point sources such as AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei) and GBHC (Galactic Black Hole Candidates) is universal, irrespective of the nature of the emitted particles. A comparison of the energy spectrum for cosmic rays at the source and $γ$-rays from quasars obtained recently by CGRO (Compton Gamma Ray Observatory) indicates that the prediction is in agreement with the data in the average sense. This suggests that neutrinos from point sources should have a spectral index identical to that of $γ$-rays for an individual point source. This prediction is also consistent with the recent observation of neutrinos by Kamiokande and IMB in which the ratio of $ν_μ/ν_e$ is close to 1, instead of 2 as expected from atmospheric neutrinos. For a further test of the model, analysis of the time variation of $γ$-ray spectra from quasars is suggested.
