Local magnon modes studied by dynamic magnetic pair-density function analysis

The dynamic magnetic pair-density function (DymPDF) $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$ is obtained via the Fourier transform of the dynamic magnetic structure factor, $S_{\rm M}(Q, E)$, which is measured using nonpolarized inelastic neutron scattering. While there is a long history of magnetic excitation studies with $S_{\rm M}(Q, E)$, there are no reports on $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$. In this study, we examine simple magnet models and representative magnet examples, such as FeTiO$_{3}$ and YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6}$, to investigate the real-space dynamics of $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$. We derive the $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$ equations for simple magnet models in a low energy limit. By comparing these equations to the simulations, we demonstrate the characteristic energy dependence of real-space local magnon modes, including the transition of the magnon mode from acoustic to optical. Our novel analysis reveals the local magnon modes accompanied by a sign change in each spin-pair correlation at a given energy in nanoscale real space even under non-periodic conditions. This method is unique for studying local magnetic dynamics.

Monoaxial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction-induced topological Hall effect in a new chiral-lattice magnet GdPt$_2$B

We investigate the topological Hall effect (THE) in the monoaxial chiral crystal GdPt$_2$B, a recently discovered compound that exhibits putative helimagnetism below 87 K. The distinct THE was observed in GdPt2B in the magnetically ordered state. The scaling relations for anomalous and topological Hall conductivities differed from those of conventional models based on the scattering process. We further demonstrate the clear scaling behavior of the THE in a wide temperature range, which we attribute to the monoaxial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction under external magnetic fields perpendicular to the screw axis. The THE induced by the monoaxial DM interaction as well as the THE in a monoaxial chiral crystal of f-electron system are demonstrated in this study.

Field evolution of magnetic phases and spin dynamics in the honeycomb lattice magnet Na2Co2TeO6: 23Na NMR study

We report on the results of 23Na NMR in the honeycomb lattice magnet Na2Co2TeO6 which has been nominated as a Kitaev material. Measurements of magnetic shift and width of the NMR line as functions of temperature and magnetic field show that a spin-disordered phase does not appear up to a field of 9 T. In the antiferromagnetic phase just below the Neel temperature TN, we find a temperature region extending down to ~TN/2 where the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 remains enhanced and is further increased by a magnetic field. This region crosses over to a low temperature region characterized by the rapidly decreasing 1/T1 which is less field-sensitive. These observations suggest incoherent spin excitations with a large spectral weight at low energies in the intermediate temperature region transforming to more conventional spin-wave excitations at low temperatures. The drastic change of the low-energy spin dynamics is likely caused by strong damping of spin waves activated only in the intermediate temperature region, which may be realized for triple-q magnetic order possessing partially-disordered moments as scattering centers of spin waves. In the paramagnetic phase near TN, dramatic field suppression of 1/T1 is observed. From analysis of the temperature dependence of 1/T1 based on the renormalized-classical description of a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet, we find the field-dependent spin stiffness constant that scales with TN as a function of magnetic field. This implies field suppression of the energy scale characterizing both two-dimensional spin correlations and three-dimensional long-range order, which may be associated with an increasing effect of frustration in magnetic fields.

Giant Peltier Conductivity in an Uncompensated Semimetal Ta2PdSe6

Thermoelectric properties of single crystal Ta2PdSe6 is investigated by means of transport measurements, and a density functional calculation. We found a giant Peltier conductivity of 100 Acm-1K-1 at 10 K and successfully explained it by means of conventional semiconductor theory. We concluded that an uncompensated semimetal, high mobility, and heavy effective mass are responsible for the giant Peltier conductivity. Our finding opens a new ground in the field of thermoelectrics to explore much better semimetals for a new possible application such as an electric current generator for a superconducting magnet.

Emergent spin-$1$ Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Enhanced thermopower via spin-state modification

We investigated the effect of pressure on the magnetic and thermoelectric properties of Sr$_{3.1}$Y$_{0.9}$Co$_{4}$O$_{10+δ}$. The magnetization is reduced with the application of pressure, reflecting the spin-state modification of the Co$^{3+}$ ions into the nonmagnetic low-spin state. Accordingly, with increasing pressure, the Seebeck coefficient is enhanced, especially at low temperatures, at which the effect of pressure on the spin state becomes significant. These results indicate that the spin-orbital entropy is a key valuable for the thermoelectric properties of the strongly correlated cobalt oxides.

Anomalous Thermoelectric Response in an Orbital-Ordered Oxide Near and Far from Equilibrium

We report the thermoelectric transport properties in the orbital-ordered Mott insulating phase of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ close to and far from equilibrium. Near equilibrium conditions where the temperature gradient is only applied to the sample, an insulating but non-monotonic temperature variation of the Seebeck coefficient is observed, which is accounted for in terms of a temperature-induced suppression of the orbital order. In non-equilibrium conditions where we have applied high electrical currents, we find that the Seebeck coefficient is anomalously increased in magnitude with increasing external current. The present result clearly demonstrates a non-thermal effect since the heating simply causes a decrease of the Seebeck coefficient, implying a non-trivial non-equilibrium effect such as a modification of the spin and orbital state in currents.

Magneto-thermopower in the Weak Ferromagnetic Oxide CaRu0.8Sc0.2O3: An Experimental Test for the Kelvin Formula in a Magnetic Material

We have measured the resistivity, the thermopower, and the specific heat of the weak ferromagnetic oxide CaRu0.8Sc0.2O3 in external magnetic fields up to 140 kOe below 80 K. We have observed that the thermopower Q is significantly suppressed by magnetic fields at around the ferromagnetic transition temperature of 30 K, and have further found that the magneto-thermopower ΔQ(H, T) = Q(H, T) - Q(0, T) is roughly proportional to the magneto-entropy ΔS(H, T) = S(H, T)-S(0, T).We discuss this relationship between the two quantities in terms of the Kelvin formula, and find that the observed ΔQ is quantitatively consistent with the values expected from the Kelvin formula, a possible physical meaning of which is discussed.

Novel Charge Ordering in the Trimer Iridium Oxide BaIrO3

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of the trimer Ir oxide BaIrO3 with face-shared Ir3O12 trimers, and have investigated the origin of the phase transition at 182 K by measuring resistivity, thermopower, magnetization and synchrotron x-ray diffraction. We propose a possible electronic model and transition mechanism, starting from a localized electron picture on the basis of the Rietveld refinement. Within this model, BaIrO3 can be basically regarded as a Mott insulator, when the Ir3O12 trimer is identified to one pseudo-atom or one lattice site. The transition can be viewed as a transition from the Mott insulator phase to a kind of charge ordered insulator phase.

Unconventional magnetism in the layered oxide LaSrRhO$_4$

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of LaSrRh$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_4$ and LaSr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RhO$_4$,and have measured the x-ray diffraction, resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, magnetization and electron spin resonance in order to evaluate their electronic states. The energy gap evaluated from the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient systematically changes with the Ga concentration, and suggests that the system changes from a small polaron insulator to a band insulator. We find that all the samples show Curie-Weiss-like susceptibility with a small Weiss temperature of the order of 1 K, which is seriously incompatible with the collective wisdom that a trivalent rhodium ion is nonmagnetic. We have determined the $g$ factor to be $g$=2.3 from the electron spin resonance, and the spin number to be $S$=1 from the magnetization-field curves by fitting with a modified Brillouin function. The fraction of the $S$=1 spins is 2--5%, which depends on the degree of disorder in the La/Sr/Ca-site, which implies that disorder near the apical oxygen is related to the magnetism of this system. A possible origin for the magnetic Rh$^{3+}$ ions is discussed.

Static magnetic moments revealed by muon spin relaxation and thermodynamic measurements in quantum spin ice Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We present muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and specific-heat versus temperature $C(T)$ measurements on polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. $C(T)$ exhibits a sharp peak at a $T_\mathrm{C}$ of 0.21 and 0.26~K for the single-crystal and polycrystalline samples respectively. For both samples, the magnetic entropy released between 50~mK and 30~K amounts to $R\ln2$ per Yb. At temperatures below $T_\mathrm{C}$ we observe a steep drop in the asymmetry of the zero-field $μ$SR time spectra at short time scales, as well as a decoupling of the muon spins from the internal field in longitudinal magnetic fields of $\leq0.25$~T for both the polycrystalline and single-crystal samples. These muon data are indicative of static magnetic moments. Our results are consistent with the onset of long-range magnetic order in both forms of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Optical Conductivity Measurement of a Dimer-Mott to Charge-Order Phase Transition in a Two-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Organic Salt Compound

We report a novel insulator-insulator transition arising from the internal charge degrees of freedom in the two-dimensional quarter-filled organic salt beta-(meso-DMBEDT-TTF)2PF6. The optical conductivity spectra above Tc = 70 K display a prominent feature of the dimer-Mott insulator, characterized by a substantial growth of a dimer peak near 0.6 eV with decreasing temperature. The dimer-peak growth is rapidly quenched as soon as a peak of the charge order shows up below Tc, indicating a competition between the two insulating phases. Our infrared imaging spectroscopy has further revealed a spatially competitive electronic phases far below Tc, suggesting a nature of quantum phase transition driven by material-parameter variations.

Spin state of Co$^{3+}$ in LaCo$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{3}$ investigated by structural phenomena

Neutron diffraction for a polycrystalline sample of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ and synchrotron x-ray diffraction for polycrystalline samples of LaCo$_{0.9}$Rh$_{0.1}$O$_{3}$ and LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ have been carried out in order to investigate the structural properties related with the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ ions. We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$_{6}$ octahedron of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$^{3+}$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$_{3}$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ions.

X-ray crystal structure analysis and the Ru valence of Ba4Ru3O10 single crystals

We present the single-crystalline x-ray diffraction study on the Ba4Ru3O10 consisting of the corner-shared Ru3O12 trimers. The crystal structure is re-determined from 78 to 300 K across an antiferromagnetic transition at 105 K. The orthorhombic symmetry (Cmca, space group No. 64) is preserved at all temperatures measured. This structure presents exceptionally long Ru-O distances characterized by a significant distribution within the Ru3O12 trimer. A bond valence sum calculation suggests that the charge disproportionation within the Ru3O12 trimer emerges even at room temperature, which we ascribe to molecular orbital formation in the Ru3O12 trimer, as supported by recent theoretical calculations. Based on the analyzed crystal structure, the electronic states and the nature of the phase transition at 105 K are discussed.

Dielectric Anomaly in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Frustrated Spin-1/2 System Rb$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ (M=Ni and Zn)

Dielectric and magnetic properties have been studied for poly-crystalline samples of quasi-one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 system Rb$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$(M=Ni and Zn) which does not exhibit a three-dimensional magnetic transition due to quantum spin fluctuation and low dimensionality. A broad peak in the magnetic susceptibility - temperature curves originated from a short range helical ordering at low temperature is suppressed by the Ni and Zn substitution for Cu sites. The capacitance is found to anomalously increase with decreasing T below ~50 K, which is also suppressed by the impurity doping. The behavior of the anomalous capacitance component is found to be strongly connected with that of the magnetic susceptibility for Rb$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ which indicates that the low-temperature dielectric response is driven by the magnetism.

Photo-Seebeck Effect in ZnO

We examine how the photo-induced carriers contribute the thermoelectric transport, i.e. the nature of the photo-Seebeck effect, in the wide-gap oxide semiconductor ZnO for the first time. We measure the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient with illuminating light. The light illumination considerably changes the Seebeck coefficient as well as the conductivity, which is sensitive to the photon energy of the illuminated light. By using a simple parallel-circuit model, we evaluate the contributions of the photo-induced carriers to the conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient, whose relationship shows a remarkable resemblance to that in doped semiconductors. Our results also demonstrate that the light illumination increases both the carrier concentration and the mobility, which can be compared with impurity-doping case for ZnO. Future prospects for thermoelectrics using light are discussed.

High-temperature thermoelectric properties of the double-perovskite ruthenium oxide (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$ErRuO$_6$

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$ErRuO$_6$ and (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$YRuO$_6$, and have measured the resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, susceptibility and x-ray absorption in order to evaluate the electronic states and thermoelectric properties of the doped double-perovskite ruthenates. We have observed a large Seebeck coefficient of -160 $μ$V/K and a low thermal conductivity of 7 mW/cmK for $x$=0.1 at 800 K in air. These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics, although the resistivity is still as high as 1 $Ω$cm. From the susceptibility and x-ray absorption measurements, we find that the doped electrons exist as Ru$^{4+}$ in the low spin state. On the basis of the measured results, the electronic states and the conduction mechanism are discussed.

Higgs transition from a magnetic Coulomb liquid to a ferromagnet in Yb_2Ti_2O_7

In a class of frustrated magnets known as spin ice, magnetic monopoles emerge as classical defects and interact via the magnetic Coulomb law. With quantum-mechanical interactions, these magnetic charges are carried by fractionalised bosonic quasi-particles, spinons, which can undergo Bose-Einstein condensation through a first-order transition via the Higgs mechanism. Here, we report evidence of a Higgs transition from a magnetic Coulomb liquid to a ferromagnet in single-crystal Yb2Ti2O7. Polarised neutron-scattering experiments show that the diffuse [111]-rod scattering and pinch-point features which develop on cooling are suddenly suppressed below T_C ~ 0.21 K, where magnetic Bragg peaks and a full depolarisation of the neutron spins are observed with thermal hysteresis, indicating a first-order ferromagnetic transition. Our results are explained on the basis of a quantum spin-ice model, whose high-temperature phase is effectively described as a magnetic Coulomb liquid, while the ground state shows a nearly collinear ferromagnetism with gapped spin excitations.
