Magnetic Structural Unit with Convex Geometry: a Building Block Hosting an Exchange-striction-driven Magnetoelectric Coupling

We perform a combined experimental and theoretical study of a magnetic-field ($B$) induced evolution of magnetic and ferroelectric properties in an antiferromagnetic material Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$, whose structure is characterized by a staggered array of Cu$_4$O$_{12}$ magnetic units with convex geometry known as square cupola. Our experiments show a $B$-induced phase transition from a previously reported low-$B$ linear magnetoelectric phase to a new high-$B$ magnetoelectric phase, which accompanies a 90$^\circ$ flop of electric polarization and gigantic magnetodielectric effect. Moreover, we observe a $B$-induced sign reversal of ferroelectric polarization in the high-$B$ phase. Our model and first-principles calculations reveal that the observed complex magnetoelectric behavior is well explained in terms of a $B$-dependent electric polarization generated in each Cu$_4$O$_{12}$ unit by the so-called exchange striction mechanism. The present study demonstrates that the materials design based on the magnetic structural unit with convex geometry deserves to be explored for developing strong magnetoelectric couplings.

Nonreciprocal spin Seebeck effect in antiferromagnets

We theoretically propose a nonreciprocal spin Seebeck effect, i.e., nonreciprocal spin transport generated by a temperature gradient, in antiferromagnetic insulators with broken inversion symmetry. We find that nonreciprocity in antiferromagnets has rich properties not expected in ferromagnets. In particular, we show that polar antiferromagnets, in which the crystal lacks the spatial inversion symmetry, exhibit perfect nonreciprocity --- one-way spin current flow irrespective of the direction of the temperature gradient. We also show that nonpolar centrosymmetric crystals can exhibit nonreciprocity when a magnetic order breaks the inversion symmetry, and in this case, the direction of the nonreciprocal flow can be controlled by reversing the magnetic domain. As their representatives, we calculate the nonreciprocal spin Seebeck voltages for the polar antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ and the honeycomb antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$, while varying temperature and magnetic field.

Antiferromagnetic Kitaev Interaction in $f$-Electron Based Honeycomb Magnets

We theoretically propose a family of $f$-electron based magnets that realizes Kitaev-type bond-dependent anisotropic interactions. Based on {\it ab initio} calculations, we show that $A_2$PrO$_3$ ($A$: alkali metals) crystalize in a triclinic structure with honeycomb layers of edge-sharing PrO$_6$ octahedra. Each Pr$^{4+}$ cation has a $4f$ electron in the $Γ_7$ doublet, which comprises a spin-orbital entangled Kramers pair with the effective moment $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$. By using the Wannier orbitals from the {\it ab initio} calculations, we find that the effective interactions between the $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ moments are predominantly of {\it antiferromagnetic} Kitaev type for light alkali metals $A$=Li and Na, in stark contrast to the ferromagnetic ones in $4d$- and $5d$-electron based materials. Our finding would provide a playground for the Kitaev spin liquids that is hard to be accessed by the candidates ever discovered.

Global constraints on $Z_2$ fluxes in two different anisotropic limits of a hypernonagon Kitaev model

The Kitaev model is an exactly-soluble quantum spin model, whose ground state provides a canonical example of a quantum spin liquid. Spin excitations from the ground state are fractionalized into emergent matter fermions and $Z_2$ fluxes. The $Z_2$ flux excitation is pointlike in two dimensions, while it comprises a closed loop in three dimensions because of the local constraint for each closed volume. In addition, the fluxes obey global constraints involving (semi)macroscopic number of fluxes. We here investigate such global constraints in the Kitaev model on a three-dimensional lattice composed of nine-site elementary loops, dubbed the hypernonagon lattice, whose ground state is a chiral spin liquid. We consider two different anisotropic limits of the hypernonagon Kitaev model where the low-energy effective models are described solely by the $Z_2$ fluxes. We show that there are two kinds of global constraints in the model defined on a three-dimensional torus, namely, surface and volume constraints: the surface constraint is imposed on the even-odd parity of the total number of fluxes threading a two-dimensional slice of the system, while the volume constraint is for the even-odd parity of the number of the fluxes through specific plaquettes whose total number is proportional to the system volume. In the two anisotropic limits, therefore, the elementary excitation of $Z_2$ fluxes occurs in a pair of closed loops so as to satisfy both two global constraints as well as the local constraints.

Chiral Spin Liquids at Finite Temperature in a Three-Dimensional Kitaev Model

Chiral spin liquids (CSLs) in three dimensions and thermal phase transitions to paramagnet are studied by unbiased Monte Carlo simulations. For an extension of the Kitaev model to a three-dimensional tricoordinate network dubbed the hypernonagon lattice, we derive low-energy effective models in two different anisotropic limits. We show that the effective interactions between the emergent $Z_2$ degrees of freedom called fluxes are unfrustrated in one limit, while highly frustrated in the other. In both cases, we find a first-order phase transition to the CSL, where both time-reversal and parity symmetries are spontaneously broken. In the frustrated case, however, the CSL state is highly exotic --- the flux configuration is subextensively degenerate while showing a directional order with broken $C_3$ rotational symmetry. Our results provide two contrasting archetypes of CSLs in three dimensions, both of which allow approximation-free simulation for the thermodynamics.

Multiple Dirac Cones and Topological Magnetism in Honeycomb-Monolayer Transition Metal Trichalcogenides

The discovery of monolayer graphene has initiated two fertile fields in modern condensed matter physics, Dirac semimetals and atomically-thin layered materials. When these trends meet again in transition metal compounds, which possess spin and orbital degrees of freedom and strong electron correlations, more exotic phenomena are expected to emerge in the cross section of topological states of matter and Mott physics. Here, we show by using ab initio calculations that a monolayer form of transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTs), which has a honeycomb network of transition metal cations, may exhibit multiple Dirac cones with tunable gaps in the electronic structure. Furthermore, we elucidate that electron correlations and carrier doping turn the multiple-Dirac semimetal into a topological ferromagnet with high Chern number. Our findings raise the honeycomb-monolayer TMTs to a new paradigm to explore correlated Dirac electrons and topologically-nontrivial magnetism. In turn, the unique wide-ranging properties of the materials will deliver new building blocks for atomically thin heterostructures.

Successive Majorana Topological Transitions Driven by a Magnetic Field in the Kitaev Model

We study quantum phase transitions in the honeycomb Kitaev model under a magnetic field, focusing on the topological nature of Majorana fermion excitations. We find a gapless phase between the low-field gapless quantum spin liquid and the high-field gapped forced-ferromagnetic state for the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in the [001] field by using the Majorana mean-field theory, in conjunction with the exact diagonalization and the spin-wave theory supporting the validity of this approach. The transition between the two gapless phases is driven by a topological change of the Majorana spectrum --- line node formation interconnecting two Majorana cones. The peculiar change of the Majorana band topology is rationalized by a sign change of the effective Kitaev coupling by the magnetic field, which does not occur in the ferromagnetic Kitaev case. Upon tilting the magnetic field away from [001], the two gapless phases become gapped and topologically nontrivial, characterized by nonzero Chern numbers with different signs. The sign change of the Chern number leads to a reversal of the thermal edge current in the half-quantized thermal Hall effect.

Néel- and Bloch-Type Magnetic Vortices in Rashba Metals

We theoretically study noncoplanar spin textures in polar magnetic conductors. Starting from the Kondo lattice model with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we derive an effective spin model with generalized Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions including the anisotropic and antisymmetric exchange interactions. By performing simulated annealing for the effective model, we find that a vortex crystal of Néel type is stabilized even in the absence of a magnetic field. Moreover, we demonstrate that a Bloch-type vortex crystal, which is usually associated with the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, can also be realized in our Rashba-based model. A magnetic field turns the vortex crystals into Néel- and Bloch-type skyrmion-like crystals. Our results underscore that the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and itinerant magnetism brings fertile possibilities of noncoplanar magnetic orderings.

Generation and control of noncollinear magnetism by supercurrent

When superconductivity couples with noncollinear spin textures, rich physics arises; for instance, singlet Cooper pairs can be converted to triplet pairs, and topological superconductors can be realized. For their applications, the controllability of noncollinear magnetism is a crucial issue. Here, we propose that a supercurrent can induce and control noncollinear magnetic orders in a correlated metal on top of a singlet superconductor. We show that the magnetic instability in the correlated metal is enhanced by the proximity effect of supercurrents, which leads to phase transitions from a paramagnetic state to noncollinear magnetic phases with helical or vortexlike spin textures. Furthermore, these magnetic orders can be switched by the direction of the supercurrent. We also discuss the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the experimental realization.

Finite-temperature phase transition to a Kitaev spin liquid phase on a hyperoctagon lattice: A large-scale quantum Monte Carlo study

The quantum spin liquid is an enigmatic quantum state in insulating magnets, in which conventional long-range order is suppressed by strong quantum fluctuations. Recently, an unconventional phase transition was reported between the low-temperature quantum spin liquid and the high-temperature paramagnet in the Kitaev model on a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb lattice. Here, we show that a similar "liquid-gas" transition takes place in another three-dimensional lattice, the hyperoctagon lattice. We investigate the critical phenomena by adopting the Green-function based Monte Carlo technique with the kernel polynomial method, which enables systematic analysis of up to 2048 sites. The critical temperature is lower than that in the hyperhoneycomb case, reflecting the smaller flux gap. We also discuss the transition on the basis of an effective model in the anisotropic limit.

Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian for High-Spin $d^7$ Mott Insulators

In the search for quantum spin liquids, candidate materials for the Kitaev model and its extensions have been intensively explored during the past decade, as the models realize the exact quantum spin liquids in the ground state. Thus far, insulating magnets in the low-spin $d^5$ electron configuration under the strong spin-orbit coupling have been studied for realizing the Kitaev-type bond-dependent anisotropic interactions between the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublets. To extend the candidates, here we investigate the systems in a high-spin $d^7$ electron configuration, whose ground state is described by the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublet. By the second- order perturbation in terms of the $t_{2g}$-$t_{2g}$ and $t_{2g}$-$e_g$ hoppings, we show that the effective spin model possesses the anisotropic Kitaev interactions as well as the isotropic Heisenberg ones. While the Kitaev interaction is always ferromagnetic, the Heisenberg interaction can become either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending on the Coulomb interactions and the crystalline electric fields. We also derive the effective model for the low-spin $d^5$ electron configuration within the same perturbation scheme, in which the Kitaev interaction becomes both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, while the Heisenberg one always ferromagnetic. Referring to the previous study for the Kitaev-Heisenberg model, we find that the quantum spin liquid phase exists in the reasonable parameter region in both $d^7$ and $d^5$ cases, while the former has a richer structure of the phase diagram. We discuss the advantages of the $d^7$ case in comparison with the $d^5$ case. Our results indicate that the high-spin $d^7$ state provides another platform for the Kitaev-type quantum spin liquid.

Lock-in of a Chiral Soliton Lattice by Itinerant Electrons

Chiral magnets often show intriguing magnetic and transport properties associated with their peculiar spin textures. A typical example is a chiral soliton lattice, which is found in monoaxial chiral magnets, such as CrNb$_3$S$_6$ and Yb(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_3$Al$_9$ in an external magnetic field perpendicular to the chiral axis. Here, we theoretically investigate the electronic and magnetic properties in the chiral soliton lattice by a minimal itinerant electron model. Using variational calculations, we find that the period of the chiral soliton lattice can be locked at particular values dictated by the Fermi wave number, in stark contrast to spin-only models. We discuss this behavior caused by the spin-charge coupling as a possible mechanism for the lock-in discovered in Yb(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_3$Al$_9$. We also show that the same mechanism leads to the spontaneous formation of the chiral soliton lattice even in the absence of the magnetic field.

Emergent odd-parity multipoles and magnetoelectric effects on a diamond structure: implication to 5$d$ transition metal oxides $A$OsO$_4$ ($A=$ K, Rb, and Cs)

We report our theoretical predictions on the linear magnetoelectric (ME) effects originating from odd-parity multipoles associated with spontaneous spin and orbital ordering on a diamond structure. We derive a two-orbital model for $d$ electrons in $e_g$ orbitals by including the effective spin-orbit coupling which arises from the mixing between $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ orbitals. We show that the model acquires a net antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling once staggered spin and orbital orders occur spontaneously. The staggered orders are accompanied by odd-parity multipoles: magnetic monopole, quadrupoles, and toroidal dipoles. We classify the types of the odd-parity multipoles according to the symmetry of the spin and orbital orders. Furthermore, by computing the ME tensor using the linear response theory, we show that the staggered orders induce a variety of the linear ME responses. We elaborate all possible ME responses for each staggered order, which are useful to identify the order parameter and to detect the odd-parity multipoles by measuring the ME effects. We also elucidate the effect of lowering symmetry by a tetragonal distortion, which leads to richer ME responses. The implications of our results are discussed for $5d$ transition metal oxides, $A$OsO$_4$ ($A=$ K, Rb, and Cs), in which the order parameters are not fully identified.

Monte Carlo study of magnetoresistance in a chiral soliton lattice

Monoaxial chiral magnets can form a peculiar noncollinear spin structure called the chiral soliton lattice in an applied magnetic field perpendicular to the helical axis. We study magnetic properties and electrical transport in the chiral soliton lattice by a Monte Carlo simulation for a one-dimensional Kondo lattice model including the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between classical localized spins. We show that the model exhibits a helical spin structure at a zero magnetic field, which turns into the chiral soliton lattice, and finally, to a forced ferromagnetic state with increasing the external magnetic field. In the chiral soliton lattice state, we find negative magnetoresistance proportional to the number of solitons at low temperature, which corroborates the spin scattering of electrons by chiral solitons. We also discuss the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the spin structure factor and electrical resistivity, in comparison with experiments for CrNb$_{3}$S$_{6}$.

Electronic band structure of 4d and 5d transition metal trichalcogenides

Transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTs), a family of van der Waals materials, have gained increasing interests from the discovery of magnetism in few-layer forms. Although TMTs with 3d transition metal elements have been studied extensively, much less is explored for the 4d and 5d cases, where the interesting interplay between electron correlations and the relativistic spin-orbit coupling is expected. Using ab initio calculations, we here investigate the electronic property of TMTs with 4d and 5d transition metal elements. We show that the band structures exhibit multiple node-like features near the Fermi level. These are the remnant of multiple Dirac cones that were recently discovered in the monolayer cases. Our results indicate that the peculiar two-dimensional multiple Dirac cones are concealed even in the layered bulk systems.

Chiral helimagnetic state in a Kondo lattice model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Monoaxial chiral magnets can form a noncollinear twisted spin structure called the chiral helimagnetic state. We study magnetic properties of such a chiral helimagnetic state, with emphasis on the effect of itinerant electrons. Modeling a monoaxial chiral helimagnet by a one-dimensional Kondo lattice model with the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction, we perform a variational calculation to elucidate the stable spin configuration in the ground state. We obtain a chiral helimagnetic state as a candidate for the ground state, whose helical pitch is modulated by the model parameters: the Kondo coupling, the Dzyaloshinski--Moriya interaction, and electron filling.

Temperature evolution of spin dynamics in two- and three-dimensional Kitaev models: Influence of fluctuating gauge fluxes

The long-sought quantum spin liquid is a quantum-entangled magnetic state leading to the fractionalization of spin degrees of freedom. Quasiparticles emergent from the fractionalization affect not only the ground state properties but also thermodynamic behavior in a peculiar manner. We here investigate how the spin dynamics evolves from the high-temperature paramagnet to the quantum spin liquid ground state, for the Kitaev spin model describing the fractionalization into itinerant matter fermions and localized $Z_2$ gauge fluxes. Beyond the previous study [J. Yoshitake, J. Nasu, and Y. Motome, Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{117}$, 157203 (2016)], in which the mean-field nature of the cluster dynamical mean-field theory prevented us from studying low-temperature properties, we develop a numerical technique by applying the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) method to statistical samples generated by the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method in a Majorana fermion representation. This QMC+CTQMC method is fully unbiased and enables us to investigate the low-temperature spin dynamics dominated by thermally excited gauge fluxes, including the unconventional phase transition caused by gauge flux loops in three dimensions, which was unreachable by the previous methods. We apply this technique to the Kitaev model in both two and three dimensions. Our results clearly distinguish two cases: while the dynamics changes smoothly through the crossover in the two-dimensional honeycomb case, it exhibits singular behaviors at the phase transition in the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb case. We show that the low-temperature spin dynamics is a sensitive probe for thermally fluctuating gauge fluxes that behave very differently between two and three dimensions.

Majorana dynamical mean-field study of spin dynamics at finite temperatures in the honeycomb Kitaev model

A prominent feature of quantum spin liquids is fractionalization of the spin degree of freedom. Fractionalized excitations have their own dynamics in different energy scales, and hence, affect finite-temperature ($T$) properties in a peculiar manner even in the paramagnetic state harboring the quantum spin liquid state. We here present a comprehensive theoretical study of the spin dynamics in a wide $T$ range for the Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, whose ground state is such a quantum spin liquid. In this model, the fractionalization occurs to break up quantum spins into itinerant matter fermions and localized gauge fluxes, which results in two crossovers at very different $T$ scales. Extending the previous study for the isotropic coupling case [J. Yoshitake, J. Nasu, and Y. Motome, Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\textbf 117}$, 157203 (2016)], we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor, the NMR relaxation rate, and the magnetic susceptibility while changing the anisotropy in the exchange coupling constants, by using the dynamical mean-field theory and the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method based on a Majorana fermion representation. We find that the system exhibits peculiar behaviors below the high-$T$ crossover whose temperature is comparable to the average of the exchange constants, reflecting the spin fractionalization in the paramagnetic region. Among them, the dichotomy between the static and dynamical spin correlations is unusual behavior hardly seen in conventional magnets. We discuss the relation between the dichotomy and the spatial configuration of gauge fluxes. Our results could stimulate further experimental and theoretical analyses of candidate materials for the Kitaev quantum spin liquids.
