Designing electronic magnetoelectric matter with organic quantum spin trimers

Magnetoelectric (ME) phenomena are commonly driven by spin-lattice coupling. Here we demonstrate a different route based on frustrated quantum spin trimers that intrinsically intertwine magnetic moments and electric dipoles. Using molecular design principles, we realize a weakly coupled lattice of equilateral $S=1/2$ spin trimers in the organic radical crystal TNN$\cdot$CH$_3$CN. In this material, correlated electronic fluctuations within each trimer generate electric dipoles, while geometrically frustrated intertrimer interactions organize them into collective ME states. Magnetization, thermodynamic, and dielectric measurements reveal multiple magnetic-field-induced phases, including the $1/3$-magnetization plateau marked by pronounced dielectric anomalies. Effective low-energy theories and numerical simulations show that these phenomena are driven by electronically generated trimer dipoles whose collective order is stabilized by frustration relief of the intertrimer interactions, establishing a direct connection between geometric frustration and emergent magnetoelectricity. Our results identify quantum spin trimers as multifunctional building blocks, providing a bottom-up route for designing correlated ME materials from electronically active quantum spin clusters.

Numerical Diagonalization Study of the Phase Boundaries of the S=2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Orthogonal Dimer Lattice

The S=2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the orthogonal dimer lattice is studied. The edges of the exact dimer and Neel-ordered phases in the ground state of the system are examined by the numerical diagonalization method. Our present results are discussed by combining them with previously obtained estimates for smaller-S cases. We find that an intermediate region between the exact dimer and Neel-ordered phases gradually widens as spin S is increased up to S=2.

Realization of a triangular spin necklace in a verdazyl-based Ni complex

We successfully synthesized a verdazyl-based complex, ($m$-Py-V)$_3$[Ni(NO$_3$)$_2$], in which Ni$^{2+}$ ions and verdazyl radicals form a one-dimensional, triangular spin necklace consisting of spin-1/2 and spin-1 units. Molecular orbital calculations reveal strong antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions between inversion-related radical pairs that form spin-1/2 singlet dimers. The remaining verdazyl and Ni$^{2+}$ spins form frustrated triangular units, creating a distinctive spin network. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements identify a phase transition to an AF order. The application of magnetic fields suppresses the phase transition signal, suggesting field-induced decoupling of the spin-1 moments. Electron spin resonance measurements are used to evaluate the easy-axis anisotropy of spin-1, which may promote the AF order. This work provides a rare example of a geometrically frustrated quantum spin chain realized via molecular design, thereby offering a platform for exploring frustration-driven quantum phases in low-dimensional materials.

Gapless behavior in a two-leg spin ladder with bond randomness

We successfully synthesized [Cu$_2$(AcO)$_4$($p$-Py-V-$p$-F)$_2$]$\cdot$4CHCl$_3$, a verdazyl-based complex with a paddlewheel structure comprising two Cu atoms, which induces strong antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interactions between Cu spins, generating a nonmagnetic singlet state at low temperatures. Two primary exchange interactions between radical spins generate a spin-1/2 AF two-leg ladder. In addition, two possible positional configurations of the F atom in the complex create four different overlap patterns of molecular orbitals, introducing bond randomness in the spin ladder. The observed experimental behaviors, such as the Curie tail in the magnetic susceptibility and the gapless gradual increase in the magnetization curve, are attributed to a broad distribution of excitation energies and a few orphan spins in the random-singlet (RS) state that are stabilized by bond randomness. The low-temperature specific heat exhibits a temperature dependence with $\propto 1/|{\rm{ln}}T|^3$, demonstrating the formation of the RS state in unfrustrated systems. We also consider the effect of restricted patterns of exchange interactions and one-dimensional nature of the system on the RS state.

Properties of an organic model $S=1$ Haldane chain system

We present the properties of a new organic $S=1$ antiferromagnetic chain system $m$-NO$_2$PhBNO (abbreviated BoNO). In this biradical system two unpaired electrons from aminoxyl groups are strongly ferromagnetically coupled ($|J_\text{FM}| /k_B \gtrsim 500$ K) which leads to the formation of an effective $S=1$ state for each molecule. The chains of BoNO biradicals propagate along the crystallographic $a$ axis. Temperature dependence of the $g$ factor and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) linewidth are consistent with a low-dimensional system with antiferromagnetic interactions. The EPR data further suggest that BoNO is the first known Haldane system with an almost isotropic $g$ factor ($2.0023 \pm 2 \unicode{x2030}$). The magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to $40$ T and low-field susceptibility, together with $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, reveal a dominant intrachain antiferromagnetic exchange coupling of $J_\text{1D}/k_B = (11.3\pm0.1)$ K, and attainable critical magnetic fields of $\mu_0 H_\text{c1} \approx 2$ T and $\mu_0 H_\text{c2} \approx 33$ T. These measurements therefore suggest that BoNO is a unique Haldane system with extremely small magnetic anisotropy. Present results are crucial for a future in-depth NMR study of the low-temperature Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) and magnetic field-induced phases, which can be performed in the entire phase space.

Quantum spin state stabilized by coupling with classical spins

We introduce a model compound featuring a spin-1/2 frustrated square lattice partially coupled by spin-5/2. A significant magnetization plateau exceeding 60 T could be observed, indicating a quantum state formed by $S$ = 1/2 spins in the square lattice. The remaining $S$ = 5/2 spins exhibited paramagnetic behavior in the low-field regions. The numerical analysis confirmed that the observed quantum state is a many-body entangled state based on the dominant AF interactions and is strongly stabilized by coupling with spin-5/2. The stabilization of this quantum state can be attributed to a compensation effect similar to magnetic field-induced superconductivity, which serves as a strategy to control the stability of quantum spin states in magnetic fields.

Quantum gapped state in a spin-1/2 distorted honeycomb-based lattice with frustration

We successfully synthesized ($p$-Py-V)[Cu(hfac)$_2$], a verdazyl-based complex. Molecular orbital calculations revealed five types of intermolecular interactions between the radical spins and two types of intramolecular interactions between the radical and the Cu spins, resulting in a spin-1/2 distorted honeycomb-based lattice. Additionally, competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions induce frustration. The magnetization curve displayed a multistage increase, including a zero-field energy gap. Considering the stronger AF interactions that form dimers and tetramers, the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curves were qualitatively explained. These findings demonstrated that the quantum state, based on the dominant AF interactions, was stabilized due to the effects of frustration in the lattice. Hence, the exchange interactions forming two-dimensional couplings decoupled, reducing energy loss caused by frustration and leading to frustration-induced dimensional reduction.

Field-induced quantum phase in a frustrated zigzag-square lattice

This study presents the experimental realization of a spin-1/2 zigzag-square lattice in a verdazyl-based complex, namely ($m$-Py-V-2,6-F$_2$)$[$Cu(hfac)$_2]$. Molecular orbital calculations suggest the presence of five types of frustrated exchange couplings. Our observations reveal an incremental increase in the magnetization curve beyond a critical field, signifying a phase transition from the antiferromagnetic ordered state to a quantum state characterized by a 1/2 plateau. This intriguing behavior arises from the effective stabilization of a zigzag chain by the external fields. These results provide evidence for field-induced dimensional reduction in a zigzag-square lattice attributed to the effects of frustration.

Magnetization process of the S = 1/2 two-leg organic spin-ladder compound BIP-BNO

We have measured the magnetization of the organic compound BIP-BNO (3,5'-bis(N-tert-butylaminoxyl)-3',5-dibromobiphenyl) up to 76 T where the magnetization is saturated. The S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg spin-ladder model accounts for the obtained experimental data regarding the magnetization curve, which is clarified using the quantum Monte Carlo method. The exchange constants on the rung and the side rail of the ladder are estimated to be J(rung)/kB = 65.7 K and J(leg)/kB = 14.1 K, respectively, deeply in the strong coupling region: J(rung)/J(leg) > 1.

Magnetic properties of quasi-two-dimensional $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with distorted square lattice

We successfully synthesize single crystals of the verdazyl radical $α$-2,3,5-Cl$_3$-V. $Ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital calculations indicate that the two dominant antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_{\rm{1}}$ and $J_{\rm{2}}$ ($α=J_{\rm{2}}/J_{\rm{1}}\simeq 0.56$), form an $S$ = 1/2 distorted square lattice. We explain the magnetic properties based on the $S$ = 1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet using the quantum Monte Carlo method, and examine the effects of the lattice distortion and the interplane interaction contribution. In the low-temperature regions below 6.4 K, we observe anisotropic magnetic behavior accompanied by a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state. The electron spin resonance signals exhibit anisotropic behavior in the temperature dependence of the resonance field and the linewidth. We explain the frequency dependence of the resonance fields in the ordered phase using a mean-field approximation with out-of-plane easy-axis anisotropy, which causes a spin-flop phase transition at approximately 0.4 T for the field perpendicular to the plane. Furthermore, the anisotropic dipole field provides supporting information regarding the presence of the easy-axis anisotropy. These results demonstrate that the lattice distortion, anisotropy, and interplane interaction of this model are sufficiently small that they do not affect the intrinsic behavior of the $S$ = 1 / 2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Phase Diagram and Soliton Picture of an Ideal Spin-Peierls Compound D-F$_{5}$PNN

We investigate magnetic properties of an $S$=1/2 quasi-one dimensional organic antiferromagnet, D-F$_{5}$PNN using magnetization measurements taken at temperatures as low as 0.5 K. Three distinct phases were observed consisting of uniform, dimerized (D), and incommensurate (I) spin structures in the magnetic field versus temperature plane, where a significant hysteresis appears between D-I transitions in the field scan measurements. A combination of magnon ($S$=1) and soliton ($S$=1/2) excitations have successfully reproduced the observed magnetic susceptibility. In addition, such excitations provide a reasonable interpretation of the temperature dependent electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. By comparison with the theoretical study, we conclude that D-F$_{5}$PNN is an ideal compound for investigating the spin-Peierls transition.

$S$ = 1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain in a zinc-verdazyl complex

We successfully synthesized the zinc-verdazyl complex [Zn(hfac)$_2$]$\cdot$($o$-Py-V) [hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate; $o$-Py-V = 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], which is an ideal model compound with an $S$ = 1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain (F-AF AHC). $Ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital (MO) calculations indicate that two dominant interactions $J_{\rm{F}}$ and $J_{\rm{AF}}$ form the $S=1/2$ F-AF AHC in this compound. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetic specific heat of the compound exhibit thermally activated behavior below approximately 1 K. Furthermore, its magnetization curve is observed up to the saturation field and directly indicates a zero-field excitation gap of 0.5 T. These experimental results provide evidence for the existence of a Haldane gap. We successfully explain the results in terms of the $S=1/2$ F-AF AHC through quantum Monte Carlo calculations with $|J_{\rm{AF}}/J_{\rm{F}}|$ = 0.22. The $ab$ $initio$ MO calculations also indicate a weak AF interchain interaction $J'$ and that the coupled F-AF AHCs form a honeycomb lattice. The $J'$ dependence of the Haldane gap is calculated, and the actual value of $J'$ is determined to be less than 0.01$|J_{\rm{F}}|$.

Fine-Tuning of Magnetic Interactions in Organic Spin Ladders

We have succeeded in synthesizing two types of new organic radical crystals 3-I-V [= 3- (3-iodophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl] and 3-Br-4-F-V [= 3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5- diphenylverdazyl]. Their crystal strucutures are found to be isomorphous to that of previously reported spin ladder 3-Cl-4-F-V. Through the quantitative analysis of their molecular arrangements and magnetic properties, we confirm that these materials form ferromagnetic chain-based spin ladders with slightly modulated magnetic interactions. These results present the first quantitative demonstration of the fine-tuning of magnetic interactions in the molecular- based materials.

Magnetic Field versus Temperature Phase Diagram of the Spin-1/2 Alternating Chain Compound F5PNN

We have measured the specific heat of the S = 1/2 alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound pentafluorophenyl nitronyl nitroxide in magnetic fields using a single crystal and powder. A sharp peak due to field-induced magnetic ordering (FIMO) is observed in both samples. The H-T phase boundary of the FIMO of the single crystal is symmetric with respect to the central field of the gapless field region HC1 < H < HC2, whereas it is distorted for the powder whose ordering temperatures are lower. An analysis employing calculations based on the finite temperature density matrix renormalization group indicates the possibility of novel incommensurate ordering due to frustration in the powder around the central field.
