Searching for Two-Neutrino and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of $^{134}$Xe with the PandaX-4T Experiment

$^{134}$Xe is a candidate isotope for neutrinoless double beta decay~($0νββ$) search. In addition, the two-neutrino case ($2νββ$) allowed by the Standard Model of particle physics has not yet been observed. Utilizing the 10.4% of $^{134}$Xe in the natural xenon in the PandaX-4T detector and its first 94.9-day exposure, we have established the most stringent constraints on $2νββ$ and $0νββ$ of $^{134}$Xe half-lives, with limits of $2.8\times10^{22}$ yr and $3.0\times10^{23}$ yr at 90% confidence level, respectively. The $2νββ$ ($0νββ$) limit surpasses the previously reported best result by a factor of 32 (2.7), highlighting the potential of large monolithic natural xenon detectors.

Detecting Neutrinos from Supernova Bursts in PandaX-4T

Neutrinos from core-collapse supernovae are essential for the understanding of neutrino physics and stellar evolution. The dual-phase xenon dark matter detectors can provide a way to track explosions of galactic supernovae by detecting neutrinos through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scatterings. In this study, a variation of progenitor masses as well as explosion models are assumed to predict the neutrino fluxes and spectra, which result in the number of expected neutrino events ranging from 6.6 to 13.7 at a distance of 10 kpc over a 10-second duration with negligible backgrounds at PandaX-4T. Two specialized triggering alarms for monitoring supernova burst neutrinos are built. The efficiency of detecting supernova explosions at various distances in the Milky Way is estimated. These alarms will be implemented in the real-time supernova monitoring system at PandaX-4T in the near future, providing the astronomical communities with supernova early warnings.

Search for Dark-Matter-Nucleon Interactions with a Dark Mediator in PandaX-4T

We report results of a search for dark-matter-nucleon interactions via a dark mediator using optimized low-energy data from the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. With the ionization-signal-only data and utilizing the Migdal effect, we set the most stringent limits on the cross section for dark matter masses ranging from 30~$\rm{MeV/c^2}$ to 2~$\rm{GeV/c^2}$. Under the assumption that the dark mediator is a dark photon that decays into scalar dark matter pairs in the early Universe, we rule out significant parameter space of such thermal relic dark-matter model.

Search for light dark matter from atmosphere in PandaX-4T

We report a search for light dark matter produced through the cascading decay of $η$ mesons, which are created as a result of inelastic collisions between cosmic rays and Earth's atmosphere. We introduce a new and general framework, publicly accessible, designed to address boosted dark matter specifically, with which a full and dedicated simulation including both elastic and quasi-elastic processes of Earth attenuation effect on the dark matter particles arriving at the detector is performed. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data of 0.63 tonne$\cdot$year exposure, no significant excess over background is observed. The first constraints on the interaction between light dark matter generated in the atmosphere and nucleus through a light scalar mediator are obtained. The lowest excluded cross-section is set at $5.9 \times 10^{-37}{\rm cm^2}$ for dark matter mass of $0.1$ MeV$/c^2$ and mediator mass of 300 MeV$/c^2$. The lowest upper limit of $η$ to dark matter decay branching ratio is $1.6 \times 10^{-7}$.

Radon Emanation from Dust of Varying Composition and Size

$^{222}Rn$ emanating from environmental dust constitutes an important background component for many low-energy, low-rate experiments. Radon emanation rates from dust and rock, thus, are important for experiment planning. In this paper, we report measured radon emanation fractions for five types of dry dust differing in grain size and composition. These data were obtained by a novel technique in $γ$-spectroscopy, measuring emanated and non-emanated $^{222}Rn$ progeny activities as well as the the parent $^{226}$Ra activity in a time series. The range of observed radon emanation fractions is $(3.7 \pm 2.0)\%$ to $(16.2 \pm 0.9)\%$. Four of the five samples are standardized samples available commercially, so additional investigations of these samples may be readily carried out.

BambooMC -- A Geant4-based simulation program for the PandaX experiments

The purpose of the PandaX experiments is to search for the possible events resulted from dark matter particles, neutrinoless double beta decay or other rare processes with xenon detectors. Understanding the energy depositions from backgrounds or calibration sources in these detectors is very important. The program of BambooMC is created to perform the Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation, providing reference information for the experiments. We introduce the design and features of BambooMC in this report. The running of the program depends on a configuration file, which combines different detectors, event generators, physics lists and analysis packs together in one simulation. The program can be easily extended and applied to other experiments.

A Mathematical Analysis of Mathematical Faculty

We use the data of tenured and tenure-track faculty at ten public and private math departments of various tiered rankings in the United States, as a case study to demonstrate the statistical and mathematical relationships among several variables, e.g., the number of publications and citations, the rank of professorship and AMS fellow status. At first we do an exploratory data analysis of the math departments. Then various statistical tools, including regression, artificial neural network, and unsupervised learning, are applied and the results obtained from different methods are compared. We conclude that with more advanced models, it may be possible to design an automatic promotion algorithm that has the potential to be fairer, more efficient and more consistent than human approach.

An Experimental Mathematics Approach to Several Combinatorial Problems

Experimental mathematics is an experimental approach to mathematics in which programming and symbolic computation are used to investigate mathematical objects, identify properties and patterns, discover facts and formulas and even automatically prove theorems. With an experimental mathematics approach, this dissertation deals with several combinatorial problems and demonstrates the methodology of experimental mathematics. We start with parking functions and their moments of certain statistics. Then we discuss about spanning trees and "almost diagonal" matrices to illustrate the methodology of experimental mathematics. We also apply experimental mathematics to Quicksort algorithms to study the running time. Finally we talk about the interesting peaceable queens problem.

Using Non-Linear Difference Equations to Study Quicksort Algorithms

Using non-linear difference equations, combined with symbolic computations, we make a detailed study of the running times of numerous variants of the celebrated Quicksort algorithms, where we consider the variants of single-pivot and multi-pivot Quicksort algorithms as discrete probability problems. With non-linear difference equations, recurrence relations and experimental mathematics techniques, explicit expressions for expectations, variances and even higher moments of their numbers of comparisons and swaps can be obtained. For some variants, Monte Carlo experiments are performed, the numerical results are demonstrated and the scaled limiting distribution is also discussed.

Numerical and Symbolic Studies of the Peaceable Queens Problem

We discuss, and make partial progress on, the peaceable queens problem, the protagonist of OEIS sequence A250000. Symbolically, we prove that Jubin's construction of two pentagons is at least a local optimum. Numerically, we find the exact numerical optimums for some specific configurations. Our method can be easily applied to more complicated configurations with more parameters.

Untying The Gordian Knot via Experimental Mathematics

In this methodological article on experimental-yet-rigorous enumerative combinatorics, we use two instructive case studies, to show that often, just like Alexander the Great before us, the simple, "cheating" solution to a hard problem is the best. So before you spend days (and possibly years) trying to answer a mathematical question by analyzing and trying to 'understand' its structure, let your computer generate enough data, and then let it guess the answer. Often its guess can be proved by a quick 'hand-waving' (yet fully rigorous) 'meta-argument'. Since our purpose is to illustrate a methodology, we include many details, as well as Maple source-code.
