An adaptive phase field framework for large-scale interface evolution problems using a strong-form gradient smoothing approach

Multiscale problems with evolving interfaces are ubiquitous in science and engineering. Phase-field models are a powerful tool for simulating interface-dominated phenomena in computational mechanics and materials modeling, but their application to large-scale problems is often constrained by the high computational cost of resolving thin diffuse interfaces over the entire domain. This paper presents an efficient strong-form phase-field solver that couples the Gradient Smoothing Method (GSM) with a hierarchical adaptive and moving structured mesh, enabling automatic localization of resolution within a narrow interfacial region while retaining coarse discretization in bulk domains. A layered refinement design is introduced to preserve locally uniform resolution across the interface, allowing the GSM discretization to maintain overall second-order accuracy despite strong mesh non-uniformity away from the interface. Although GSM incurs a higher per-degree-of-freedom cost than standard finite-difference schemes, the adaptive framework substantially reduces the total number of degrees of freedom, resulting in near-linear computational scaling compared with the quadratic scaling of uniform-grid approaches. Numerical examples based on the Allen-Cahn and Cahn-Hilliard equations demonstrate that the proposed adaptive GSM solver delivers desired accuracy for interface evolution while attaining more favorable computational complexity, O(N), than existing weak-form and strong-form solvers, becoming significantly more efficient for large-scale problems with thin interfaces or a small interfacial area fraction relative to the whole domain.

Simulation Study on the Discrimination of $0\nu\beta\beta$ Events from Single-Electron Events Using Orthogonal-Strip HPGe Detectors

Neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) offers a sensitive probe of neutrino mass and its Majorana nature. Orthogonal-strip high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors with high spatial resolution provide a promising approach for distinguishing $0\nu\beta\beta$ events from single-electron backgrounds. In this work, a simulation framework was developed to evaluate the discrimination performance of these detectors. The framework combined Geant4 simulations with a hybrid numerical-analytical approach to model charge cloud dynamics. A dual-branch convolutional neural network (CNN) was implemented to extract topological features for event classification. The impact of detector geometry on discrimination performance was quantitatively assessed. For a fixed crystal thickness of 15 mm, the background rejection efficiency decreased from 79.5\% to 59.0\% as the strip pitch increased from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. For a strip pitch of 0.25 mm, a crystal thickness of 20 mm was found to be optimal, balancing full-energy peak (FEP) efficiency with discrimination capability. These results demonstrate that orthogonal-strip HPGe detectors can effectively suppress single-electron backgrounds, and provide quantitative guidance for detector design in $^{76}$Ge $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay searches.

MeV Astrophysical Spectroscopic Surveyor (MASS): A Compton Telescope Mission Concept

We propose a future mission concept, the MeV Astrophysical Spectroscopic Surveyor (MASS), which is a large area Compton telescope using 3D position sensitive cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors optimized for emission line detection. The payload consists of two layers of CZT detectors in a misaligned chessboard layout, with a total geometric area of 4096 cm$^2$ for on-axis observations. The detectors can be operated at room-temperature with an energy resolution of 0.6\% at 0.662 MeV. The in-orbit background is estimated with a mass model. At energies around 1 MeV, a line sensitivity of about $10^{-5}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ can be obtained with a 1 Ms observation. The main science objectives of MASS include nucleosynthesis in astrophysics and high energy astrophysics related to compact objects and transient sources. The payload CZT detectors weigh roughly 40 kg, suggesting that it can be integrated into a micro- or mini-satellite. We have constructed a pathfinder, named as MASS-Cube, to have a direct test of the technique with 4 detector units in space in the near future.

A feasibility study of multi-electrode high-purity germanium detector for Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay searching

Experiments to search for neutrinoless double-beta (0ν\b{eta}\b{eta}) decay of 76Ge using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector rely heavily on background suppression technologies to enhance their sensitivities. In this work, we proposed a pulse-shape analysis method based on a neural network (NN) and a light gradient boosting machine (lightGBM; LGB) to discriminate single-electron (background) and double-electrons (0ν\b{eta}\b{eta} signal) events in a multi-electrode HPGe detector. In this paper, we describe a multi-electrode HPGe detector system, a data-processing system, and pulse-shape simulation procedures. We built a fully connected (FC) neural network and an LGB model to classify the single- and double-electron events. The FC network is trained with simulated single- and double-electron-induced pulses and tested in an independent dataset generated by the pulse-shape simulation. The discrimination efficiency of the FC neural network in the test set for the 0ν\b{eta}\b{eta} double-electron events signal was 77.4%, the precision was 57.7%, and the training time was 430 min. The discrimination efficiency of LGB model was 73.1%, the precision was 64.0%, and the training time was 1.5 min. This study demonstrated that it is feasible to realize single- and double-electron discrimination on multi-electrode HPGe detectors using an FC neural network and LGB model. These results can be used as a reference for future 76Ge 0ν\b{eta}\b{eta} experiments.

A novel method to measure the dE/dx resolution of a TPC prototype using 266 nm UV laser

The specific energy loss (dE/dx) resolution is critical for particle identification and separation in TPC. In connection with the R&D for the TPC at the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), we find the laser ionisation obeys the Gaussian distribution theoretically and experimentally. Based on this, we develop a novel method using a 266 nm UV laser to measure the dE/dx resolution. Comparing to the traditional methods with particle beams or cosmic rays, the novel method with 266 nm UV laser is more convenient and flexible. We verify the method's feasibility with a TPC prototype and extrapolate the dE/dx resolution to the CEPC TPC. The estimation of the dE/dx resolution is without the magnetic field.

Feasibility study of TPC detector at high luminosity $Z$ pole on the circular collider

With the development of the circular collider, it is necessary to make accurate physics experimental measurements of particle properties at higher luminosity $Z$ pole. Micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs), which contain Gaseous Electron Multiplier (GEM) and Micro-mesh gaseous structures (Micromegas), have excellent potential for development as the readout devices of the time projection chamber (TPC) tracker detector. To meet the updated physics requirements of the high luminosity $Z$ from the preliminary concept design report (preCDR) to concept design report (CDR) at the circular electron positron collider (CEPC), In this paper, the space charge distortion of the TPC detector is simulated with the CEPC beam structure. Using the multi-physics simulation software package, the distribution of ion estimated by Geant4 is used as the input for the differential equation, and the relationship between the ion density distribution and electric field in the detector chamber is simulated. These simulation results show that the maximum deviation for Higgs $\mathcal{O}$(25 $μ$m) meets the performance requirements in CEPC TPC detector at the high luminosity $Z$ pole, while it is still a considerable challenge for $Z$ pole, with the maximum deviation $\mathcal{O}$($>100~μ$m). According to the previous developments, the cascaded structure of GEM and Micromegas detector has been measured. The new considerations of the detector's requirements were given, the gain needs to be reached to about 2000 with IBF$\times$Gain under 0.1, and IBF means the ions back flow ratio of the detector. The pixel TPC is a potential option to replace the traditional MPGDs with the low gain, low occupancy, and outstanding pattern recognition. Finally, some update parameters and experiments results were compared.

Performance study of a directional fast neutron detection system based on TPC and plastic scintillation detectors

A neutron time projection chamber can locate the approximate direction of a neutron hot spot with high efficiency and a 4π field of view. The angular resolution can be significantly improved by adding several plastic scintillation detectors and using coincidence events. The specific performances of such a coincidence imaging system are studied based on theoretical calculations and experimental results. The calculated value of the angular resolution is approximately 2° for the current system, which agrees well with the experimental results and sets an upper limit for the angular resolution of traditional back projection based online reconstruction methods. Although the statistical iterative method can breakthrough this limit and further improve the angular resolution, the time consumption is usually a problem. The coincidence imaging system can be further optimized for future applications based on the theoretical model.

Feasibility study of TPC tracker detector for the circular collider

The discovery of a SM Higgs boson at the LHC brought about great opportunity to investigate the feasibility of a Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) operating at center-of-mass energy of $\sim 240$ GeV, as a Higgs factory, with designed luminosity of about $2\times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. The CEPC provides a much cleaner collision environment than the LHC, it is ideally suited for studying the properties of Higgs boson with greater precision. Another advantage of the CEPC over the LHC is that the Higgs boson can be detected through the recoil mass method by only reconstructing Z boson decay without examining the Higgs decays. In Concept Design Report(CDR), the circumference of CEPC is 100km, with two interaction points available for exploring different detector design scenarios and technologies. The baseline design of CEPC detector is an ILD-like concept, with a superconducting solenoid of 3.0 Tesla surrounding the inner silicon detector, TPC tracker detector and the calorimetry system. Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) have been extensively studied and used in many fields, especially in particle physics experiments, including STAR and ALICE. The TPC detector will operate in continuous mode on the circular machine. To fulfill the physics goals of the future circular collider and meet Higgs/$Z$ run, a TPC with excellent performance is required. We have proposed and investigated the ions controlling performance of a novel configuration detector module. The aim of this study is to suppress ion backflow ($IBF$) continually. In this paper, some update results of the feasibility and limitation on TPC detector technology R$\&$D will be given using the hybrid gaseous detector module.

Directional fast neutron detection using a time projection chamber and plastic scintillation detectors

A new method for directional fast neutron detection is proposed based on a neutron time projection chamber (TPC) and position-sensitive plastic scintillation detectors. The detection system can efficiently locate the approximate location of a hot spot with 4π field-of-view using only the neutron TPC. Then, the system generates a high-resolution image of the hot spot using selected coincidence events in the TPC and the scintillation detectors. A prototype was built and tested using a Cf-252 source. An efficiency of 7.1x10-3 was achieved for fast searching. The angular resolution was 7.8° (full width at half maximum, FWHM) for high-resolution imaging using the simple back projection method.

Development of a 3-D Position Sensitive Neutron Detector Based on Organic Scintillators with Double Side SiPM Readout

A 3-D position sensitive neutron detector is being developed based on a plastic scintillator array. A double side SiPM readout is used to determine the depth of interaction (DOI) in each scintillator unit. In the preliminary test, the DOI in a 254 x 6 x 6 mm3 SP101 plastic scintillator is measured at different positions using a collimated Co-60 source. The SiPM (KETEK PM6660) signals are recorded by a 2.5 GS/s digital oscilloscope. The DOI results are calculated using both the amplitude and the temporal information. Position resolutions (FWHM) of 2.5 cm and 6.6 cm are realized, respectively. A detector based on a 2-D array is capable of recording the 3-D position information of the incident neutron. The 3-D detector is to be used together with a neutron time projection chamber as a directional fast neutron detector. According to the simulation results, the angular resolution (8 degree FWHM) is much better than that of a typical neutron scatter camera.

A Time Projection Chamber with GEM-Based Readout

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

High efficiency event-counting thermal neutron imaging using Gd doped micro channel plate

An event-counting thermal neutron imaging detector based on 3 mol % natGd2O3 doped micro channel plate (MCP) has been developed and tested. Thermal neutron imaging experiment was carried out with a low flux neutron beam. Detection efficiency of 33 % was achieved with only one doped MCP. The spatial resolution of 72 μm RMS is currently limited by the readout anode. A detector with larger area and improved readout method is now being developed.

Threshold fields for antiparallel ferroelectric domain wall motion

While an ideal antiparallel ferroelectric wall is considered a unit cell in width (~0.5nm), we show using phase field modeling that the threshold field for moving this wall dramatically drops by 2-3 orders of magnitude if the wall were diffuse by only ~2-3nm. Since antiparallel domain walls are symmetry allowed in all ferroelectrics, and since domain wall broadening on nanometer scale is widely reported in literature, this mechanism is generally applicable to all ferroelectrics.

Superhumps in a Peculiar SU UMa-Type Dwarf Nova ER Ursae Majoris

We report the photometry of a peculiar SU UMa-type dwarf nova - ER UMa for ten nights during 1998 December and 1999 March covering a complete rise to the supermaximum and a normal outburst cycle. Superhumps have been found during the rise to the superoutburst. A negative superhump appeared in Dec.22 light curve, while the superhump on the next night became positive and had large amplitude and distinct waveform from that of the previous night. In the normal outburst we captured, superhumps with larger or smaller amplitudes seem to always exist, although it is not necessarily true for every normal outburst. These results show great resemblance with V1159 Ori (Patterson et al. 1995). It is more likely that superhumps occasionally exist at essentially all phases of the eruption cycles of ER UMa stars, which should be considered in modeling.
