Kru\v{z}kov-type uniqueness theorem for a non-monotone flow function case with application to Riemann problem solutions

We generalize the previously obtained Kru\v{z}kov-type uniqueness result for the initial-boundary value problem for the chemical flood conservation law system to the case of an almost arbitrary flow function, not restricted by the S-shaped condition or the monotonicity with respect to the chemical agent concentration. The result is applied to the analysis of the Riemann problem solutions for an S-shaped flow function changing monotonicity with respect to the chemical concentration exactly once. All possible Riemann problem solution structures are classified, including certain unique structures that have not been described in earlier studies. Keywords: Initial-boundary value problem; Riemann problem; first-order hyperbolic system; conservation laws; shock waves; uniqueness theorem; vanishing viscosity; chemical flood.

Vanishing adsorption limit of Riemann problem solutions for the polymer model

We examine the vanishing adsorption limit of solutions of Riemann problems for the Glimm-Isaacson model of chemical flooding of a petroleum reservoir. A contact discontinuity is deemed admissible if it is the limit of traveling waves or rarefaction waves for an augmented system that accounts for weak chemical adsorption onto the rock. We prove that this criterion justifies the admissibility criteria adopted previously by Keyfitz-Kranzer, Isaacson-Temple, and de Souza-Marchesin, provided that the fractional flow function depends monotonically on chemical concentration. We also demonstrate that the adsorption criterion selects the undercompressive contact discontinuities required to solve the general Riemann problem in an example model with non-monotone dependence.

Propagating terrace in a two-tubes model of gravitational fingering

We study a semi-discrete model for the two-dimensional incompressible porous medium (IPM) equation describing gravitational fingering phenomenon. The model consists of a system of advection-reaction-diffusion equations on concentration, velocity and pressure, describing motion of miscible liquids under the Darcy's law in two vertical tubes (real lines) and interflow between them. Our analysis reveals the structure of gravitational fingers in this simple setting - the mixing zone consists of space-time regions of constant intermediate concentrations and the profile of propagation is characterized by two consecutive traveling waves which we call a terrace. We prove the existence of such a propagating terrace for the parameters corresponding to small distances between the tubes. This solution shows the possible mechanism of slowing down the fingers' growth due to convection in the transversal direction. The main tool in the proof is a reduction to pressure-free transverse flow equilibrium (TFE) model using geometrical singular perturbation theory and the persistence of stable and unstable manifolds under small perturbations.

Velocity of viscous fingers in miscible displacement: Intermediate concentration

We investigate one-phase flow in porous medium corresponding to a miscible displacement process in which the viscosity of the injected fluid is smaller than the viscosity in the reservoir fluid, which frequently leads to the formation of a mixing zone characterized by thin fingers. The mixing zone grows in time due to the difference in speed between its leading and trailing edges. The transverse flow equilibrium (TFE) model provides estimates of these speeds. We propose an enhancement for the TFE estimates, and provide its theoretical justification. It is based on the assumption that an intermediate concentration exists near the tip of the finger, which allows to reduce the integration interval in the speed estimate. Numerical simulations were conducted that corroborate the new estimates within the computational fluid dynamics model. The refined estimates offer greater accuracy than those provided by the original TFE model.

$L_2$-small ball asymptotics for a family of finite-dimensional perturbations of Gaussian functions

In this article we study the small ball probabilities in $L_2$-norm for a family of finite-dimensional perturbations of Gaussian functions. We define three types of perturbations: non-critical, partially critical and critical; and derive small ball asymptotics for the perturbated process in terms of the small ball asymptotics for the original process. The natural examples of such perturbations appear in statistics in the study of empirical processes with estimated parameters (the so-called Durbin's processes). We show that the Durbin's processes are critical perturbations of the Brownian bridge. Under some additional assumptions, general results can be simplified. As an example we find the exact $L_2$-small ball asymptotics for critical perturbations of the Green processes (the processes which covariance function is the Green function of the ordinary differential operator).
