An infinite series of Gorenstein local algebras failing the affine homogeneity property

We provide an infinite series of commutative finite-dimensional Gorenstein local algebras $A_n$ for $n \ge 2$. We give an elementary proof that the maximal ideal of every algebra $A_n$ possesses a one-dimensional subspace that is different from the socle and invariant under the automorphism group of $A_n$. The latter implies that the algebras $A_n$ fail the affine homogeneity property. We also discuss some consequences concerning additive actions on projective hypersurfaces, related to the generalized Hassett-Tschinkel correspondence for these algebras.

Algebraic monoid structures on the affine 3-space

We complete the classification of algebraic monoid structures on the affine 3-space. The result is based on a reduction of the general case to that of commutative monoids. We also study various algebraic properties of all monoids appearing in the classification.

Root monoids and active algebraic groups

We describe affine monoids whose group of invertible elements is an active semidirect product of a unipotent group and a torus, in terms of comultiplications on the algebra of regular functions. We introduce the notion of a root monoid, which is constructed from a set of Demazure root pairs on an affine toric variety, and study the properties of such monoids.

Affine monoids of corank one

We give a classification of noncommutative algebraic monoid structures on normal affine varieties such that the group of invertible elements of the monoid is connected, solvable, and has a one-dimensional unipotent radical. We describe the set of idempotents and the center of such a monoid and give a criterion for existence of the zero element.

On Normality of Projective Hypersurfaces with an Additive Action

We study projective hypersurfaces $X$ admitting an induced additive action, i.e., an effective action ${\mathbb G_a^m\times X\to X}$ of the vector group $\mathbb G_a^m$ with an open orbit that can be extended to an action on the ambient projective space. A criterion for normality of such a hypersurface $X$ is given. Also, we prove that for any projective hypersurface $Z$ there exists a hypersurface $X$ with an induced additive action such that the complement to the open $\mathbb G_a^m$-orbit in $X$ is a projective cone over $Z$. We introduce a construction that produces non-degenerate hypersurfaces with induced additive action from Young diagrams and study the properties of the hypersurfaces obtained in this way.

Affine homogeneous varieties and suspensions

An algebraic variety $X$ is called a homogeneous variety if the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ acts on $X$ transitively, and a homogeneous space if there exists a transitive action of an algebraic group on $X$. We prove a criterion of smoothness of a suspension to construct a wide class of homogeneous varieties. As an application, we give criteria for a Danielewski surface to be a homogeneous variety and a homogeneous space. Also, we construct affine suspensions of arbitrary dimension that are homogeneous varieties but not homogeneous spaces.

Equivariant completions of affine spaces

We survey recent results on open embeddings of the affine space $\mathbb{C}^n$ into a complete algebraic variety $X$ such that the action of the vector group $\mathbb{G}_a^n$ on $\mathbb{C}^n$ by translations extends to an action of $\mathbb{G}_a^n$ on $X$. We begin with Hassett-Tschinkel correspondence describing equivariant embeddings of $\mathbb{C}^n$ into projective spaces and give its generalization for embeddings into projective hypersurfaces. Further sections deal with embeddings into flag varieties and their degenerations, complete toric varieties, and Fano varieties of certain types.

Homogeneous algebraic varieties and transitivity degree

Let $X$ be an algebraic variety such that the group $\text{Aut}(X)$ acts on $X$ transitively. We define the transitivity degree of $X$ as a maximal number $m$ such that the action of $\text{Aut}(X)$ on $X$ is $m$-transitive. If the action of $\text{Aut}(X)$ is $m$-transitive for all $m$, the transitivity degree is infinite. We compute the transitivity degree for all quasi-affine toric varieties and for many homogeneous spaces of algebraic groups. Also we discuss a conjecture and open questions related to this invariant.

Commutative algebraic monoid structures on affine surfaces

We classify commutative algebraic monoid structures on normal affine surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The answer is given in two languages: comultiplications and Cox coordinates. The result follows from a more general classification of commutative monoid structures of rank 0, n-1 or n on a normal affine variety of dimension n.

Commutative algebraic monoid structures on affine spaces

We study commutative associative polynomial operations $\mathbb{A}^n\times\mathbb{A}^n\to\mathbb{A}^n$ with unit on the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A classification of such operations is obtained up to dimension 3. Several series of operations are constructed in arbitrary dimension. Also we explore a connection between commutative algebraic monoids on affine spaces and additive actions on toric varieties.
