Research on the Flat Field Measurement Method of Coronagraph

The solar corona has an extremely low density, and its brightness is only about one millionth of that of the photosphere. High-dynamic-range imaging of its faint structure is therefore essential for studying coronal heating, coronal mass ejections, and space weather. Quantitative coronagraph imaging requires flat-field measurement and calibration, which underpin intensity calibration, small-scale feature detection, and long-term cyclic analysis. This paper analyzes the coronagraph imaging chain and the origins of flat-field errors, including optical aberrations, stray light, and pixel-response non-uniformity, and summarizes the resulting calibration requirements of next-generation coronagraphs. On this basis, ground-based and space-based flat-fielding methods are systematically reviewed: the ground-based methods include integrating-sphere uniform light sources, opal glass/diffuser plates, clear-sky and thin-cloud backgrounds, and solar-disk scanning, while the space-based methods include internal light sources and diffuser plates, attitude-roll and off-corona offset observations, and multi-phase statistical self-consistent flat-fielding. Their accuracy, resource cost, and applicability are compared. The review shows that no single method is simultaneously high-precision, easy to update, and engineer-friendly; a hierarchical, multi-method calibration framework is therefore recommended. Finally, a new method is proposed in which lithographically generated structured light fields, combined with Fourier-optics and machine-learning inversion, are used to estimate the pixel-response function. Preliminary experiments show that this method achieves a lower residual error than the integrating-sphere and opal-glass methods, providing a high-precision reference for future wide-band, high-resolution coronagraph calibration.

Simultaneous determination of multiple low-lying energy levels on a superconducting quantum processor

Determining the ground and low-lying excited states is critical in numerous scenarios. Recent work has proposed the ancilla-entangled variational quantum eigensolver (AEVQE) that utilizes entanglement between ancilla and physical qubits to simultaneously tagert multiple low-lying energy levels. In this work, we report the experimental implementation of the AEVQE on a superconducting quantum cloud platform, demonstrating the full procedure of solving the low-lying energy levels of the H$_2$ molecule and the transverse-field Ising models (TFIMs). We obtain the potential energy curves of H$_2$ and show an indication of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition in the TFIMs from the average absolute magnetization. Moreover, we investigate multiple factors that affect the algorithmic performance and provide a comparison with ancilla-free VQE algorithms. Our work demonstrates the experimental feasibility of the AEVQE algorithm and offers a guidance for the VQE approach in solving realistic problems on publicly-accessible quantum platforms.

Joint Semantic-Channel Coding and Modulation for Token Communications

In recent years, the Transformer architecture has achieved outstanding performance across a wide range of tasks and modalities. Token is the unified input and output representation in Transformer-based models, which has become a fundamental information unit. In this work, we consider the problem of token communication, studying how to transmit tokens efficiently and reliably. Point cloud, a prevailing three-dimensional format which exhibits a more complex spatial structure compared to image or video, is chosen to be the information source. We utilize the set abstraction method to obtain point tokens. Subsequently, to get a more informative and transmission-friendly representation based on tokens, we propose a joint semantic-channel and modulation (JSCCM) scheme for the token encoder, mapping point tokens to standard digital constellation points (modulated tokens). Specifically, the JSCCM consists of two parallel Point Transformer-based encoders and a differential modulator which combines the Gumel-softmax and soft quantization methods. Besides, the rate allocator and channel adapter are developed, facilitating adaptive generation of high-quality modulated tokens conditioned on both semantic information and channel conditions. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms both joint semantic-channel coding and traditional separate coding, achieving over 1dB gain in reconstruction and more than 6x compression ratio in modulated symbols.

Semantic Communication Enabled Holographic Video Processing and Transmission

Holographic video communication is considered a paradigm shift in visual communications, becoming increasingly popular for its ability to offer immersive experiences. This article provides an overview of holographic video communication and outlines the requirements of a holographic video communication system. Particularly, following a brief review of semantic com- munication, an architecture for a semantic-enabled holographic video communication system is presented. Key technologies, including semantic sampling, joint semantic-channel coding, and semantic-aware transmission, are designed based on the proposed architecture. Two related use cases are presented to demonstrate the performance gain of the proposed methods. Finally, potential research topics are discussed to pave the way for the realization of semantic-enabled holographic video communications.

Observing Quantum Correlation Dynamics in Tunable Superconducting Bose-Hubbard Simulators

The dynamics of quantum correlations are central to understanding many physical properties of quantum systems. Here we experimentally study the correlation dynamics via two-particle quantum walks in superconducting Bose-Hubbard qutrit arrays, with tunable on-site interaction $U$ realized by Floquet engineering. Quantum walks show the characteristic change from bosonic bunching to fermionic antibunching with increasing $U$. The two-site entanglement and quantum correlation dynamics, as measured by negativity and quantum discord, are investigated. We find that depending on the initial state, the propagation of entanglement can be strongly suppressed with increasing $U$, while that of quantum discord exhibits considerably larger amplitude; or both of them appear insensitive to $U$. Furthermore, the forms of entanglement are found to persist throughout particle walks for $U =$ 0 and it is generally not the case when $U$ increases. Our work highlights the role of interaction in shaping quantum dynamics and extends the realm of simulating correlated quantum systems with superconducting circuits.

Simultaneous determination of multiple low-energy eigenstates of many-body systems on a superconducting quantum processor

The determination of the ground and low-lying excited states is critical in many studies of quantum chemistry and condensed-matter physics. Recent theoretical work proposes a variational quantum eigensolver using ancillary qubits to generate entanglement in the variational circuits, which avoids complex ansatz circuits and successive measurements in the previous algorithms. In this work, we employ the ancilla-entangled variational quantum eigensolver to simultaneously compute multiple low-lying eigenenergies and eigenstates of the H2 molecule and three- and five-spin transverse field Ising models (TFIMs) on a superconducting quantum processor. We obtain the potential energy curves of H2 and show an indication of antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition in the TFIMs from the average absolute magnetization. Our experiments demonstrate that the algorithm is capable of simultaneously determining multiple eigenenergies and eigenstates of many-body systems with high efficiency and accuracy and with less computational resources.

Adaptive Sampling and Joint Semantic-Channel Coding under Dynamic Channel Environment

Deep learning enabled semantic communications are attracting extensive attention. However, most works normally ignore the data acquisition process and suffer from robustness issues under dynamic channel environment. In this paper, we propose an adaptive joint sampling-semantic-channel coding (Adaptive-JSSCC) framework. Specifically, we propose a semantic-aware sampling and reconstruction method to optimize the number of samples dynamically for each region of the images. According to semantic significance, we optimize sampling matrices for each region of the most individually and obtain a semantic sampling ratio distribution map shared with the receiver. Through the guidance of the map, high-quality reconstruction is achieved. Meanwhile, attention-based channel adaptive module (ACAM) is designed to overcome the neural network model mismatch between the training and testing channel environment during sampling-reconstruction and encoding-decoding. To this end, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is employed as an extra parameter input to integrate and reorganize intermediate characteristics. Simulation results show that the proposed Adaptive-JSSCC effectively reduces the amount of data acquisition without degrading the reconstruction performance in comparison to the state-of-the-art, and it is highly adaptable and adjustable to dynamic channel environments.

Variational Source-Channel Coding for Semantic Communication

Semantic communication technology emerges as a pivotal bridge connecting AI with classical communication. The current semantic communication systems are generally modeled as an Auto-Encoder (AE). AE lacks a deep integration of AI principles with communication strategies due to its inability to effectively capture channel dynamics. This gap makes it difficult to justify the need for joint source-channel coding (JSCC) and to explain why performance improves. This paper begins by exploring lossless and lossy communication, highlighting that the inclusion of data distortion distinguishes semantic communication from classical communication. It breaks the conditions for the separation theorem to hold and explains why the amount of data transferred by semantic communication is less. Therefore, employing JSCC becomes imperative for achieving optimal semantic communication. Moreover, a Variational Source-Channel Coding (VSCC) method is proposed for constructing semantic communication systems based on data distortion theory, integrating variational inference and channel characteristics. Using a deep learning network, we develop a semantic communication system employing the VSCC method and demonstrate its capability for semantic transmission. We also establish semantic communication systems of equivalent complexity employing the AE method and the VAE method. Experimental results reveal that the VSCC model offers superior interpretability compared to AE model, as it clearly captures the semantic features of the transmitted data, represented as the variance of latent variables in our experiments. In addition, VSCC model exhibits superior semantic transmission capabilities compared to VAE model. At the same level of data distortion evaluated by PSNR, VSCC model exhibits stronger human interpretability, which can be partially assessed by SSIM.

Mapping Topology-Localization Phase Diagram with Quasiperiodic Disorder Using a Programmable Superconducting Simulator

We explore topology-localization phase diagram by simulating one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with quasiperiodic disorder using a programmable superconducting simulator. We experimentally map out and identify various trivial and topological phases with extended, critical, and localized bulk states. We find that with increasing disorder strength, some extended states can be first replaced by localized states and then by critical states before the system finally becomes fully localized. The critical states exhibit typical features such as multifractality and self-similarity, which lead to surprisingly rich phases with different types of mobility edges and scaling behaviors on the phase boundaries. Our results shed new light on the investigation of the topological and localization phenomena in condensed-matter physics.

Vacuum-gap transmon qubits realized using flip-chip technology

Significant progress has been made in building large-scale superconducting quantum processors based on flip-chip technology. In this work, we use the flip-chip technology to realize a modified transmon qubit, donated as the "flipmon", whose large shunt capacitor is replaced by a vacuum-gap parallel plate capacitor. To further reduce the qubit footprint, we place one of the qubit pads and a single Josephson junction on the bottom chip and the other pad on the top chip which is galvanically connected with the single Josephson junction through an indium bump. The electric field participation ratio can arrive at nearly 53% in air when the vacuum-gap is about 5 microns, and thus potentially leading to a lower dielectric loss. The coherence times of the flipmons are measured in the range of 30-60 microseconds, which are comparable with that of traditional transmons with similar fabrication processes. The electric field simulation indicates that the metal-air interface's participation ratio increases significantly and may dominate the qubit's decoherence. This suggests that more careful surface treatment needs to be considered. No evidence shows that the indium bumps inside the flipmons cause significant decoherence. With well-designed geometry and good surface treatment, the coherence of the flipmons can be further improved.

Transmon qubit with relaxation time exceeding 0.5 milliseconds

By using the dry etching process of tantalum (Ta) film, we had obtained transmon qubit with the best lifetime (T1) 503 us, suggesting that the dry etching process can be adopted in the following multi-qubit fabrication with Ta film. We also compared the relaxation and coherence times of transmons made with different materials (Ta, Nb and Al) with the same design and fabrication processes of Josephson junction, we found that samples prepared with Ta film had the best performance, followed by those with Al film and Nb film. We inferred that the reason for this difference was due to the different loss of oxide materials located at the metal-air interface.

Evaluation of the neutron background in CsI target for WIMP direct detection when using a reactor neutrino detector as a neutron veto system

A direct WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particle) detector with a neutron veto system is designed to better reject neutrons. An experimental configuration is studied in the present paper: a WIMP detectors with CsI(Na) target is placed inside a reactor neutrino detector. The neutrino detector is used as a neutron veto device. The neutron background for the experimental design has been estimated using the Geant4 simulation. The results show that the neutron background can decrease to O(0.01) events per year per tonne of CsI(Na). We calculate the sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering. An exposure of one tonne $\times$ year could reach a cross-section of about 3$\times$$10^{-11}$ pb.
