Predictive information criterion for jump diffusion processes

In this paper, we address a model selection problem for ergodic jump diffusion processes based on high-frequency samples. We evaluate the expected genuine log-likelihood function and derive an Akaike-type information criterion based on the threshold-based quasi-likelihood function. In the derivation process, we also give new estimates of the transition density of jump diffusion processes. We also provide the relative selection probability of the proposed information criterion.

Quasi-Likelihood Analysis for Student-Lévy Regression

We consider the quasi-likelihood analysis for a linear regression model driven by a Student-t Lévy process with constant scale and arbitrary degrees of freedom. The model is observed at high frequency over an extending period, under which we can quantify how the sampling frequency affects estimation accuracy. In that setting, joint estimation of trend, scale, and degrees of freedom is a non-trivial problem. The bottleneck is that the Student-t distribution is not closed under convolution, making it difficult to estimate all the parameters fully based on the high-frequency time scale. To efficiently deal with the intricate nature from both theoretical and computational points of view, we propose a two-step quasi-likelihood analysis: first, we make use of the Cauchy quasi-likelihood for estimating the regression-coefficient vector and the scale parameter; then, we construct the sequence of the unit-period cumulative residuals to estimate the remaining degrees of freedom. In particular, using full data in the first step causes a problem stemming from the small-time Cauchy approximation, showing the need for data thinning.

Student t-Lévy regression model in YUIMA

The aim of this paper is to discuss an estimation and a simulation method in the \textsf{R} package YUIMA for a linear regression model driven by a Student-$t$ Lévy process with constant scale and arbitrary degrees of freedom. This process finds applications in several fields, for example finance, physic, biology, etc. The model presents two main issues. The first is related to the simulation of a sample path at high-frequency level. Indeed, only the $t$-Lévy increments defined on an unitary time interval are Student-$t$ distributed. In YUIMA, we solve this problem by means of the inverse Fourier transform for simulating the increments of a Student-$t$ Lévy defined on a interval with any length. A second problem is due to the fact that joint estimation of trend, scale, and degrees of freedom does not seem to have been investigated as yet. In YUIMA, we develop a two-step estimation procedure that efficiently deals with this issue. Numerical examples are given in order to explain methods and classes used in the YUIMA package.

Noise Inference For Ergodic Lévy Driven SDE

We study inference for the driving Lévy noise of an ergodic stochastic differential equation (SDE) model, when the process is observed at high-frequency and long time and when the drift and scale coefficients contain finite-dimensional unknown parameters. By making use of the Gaussian quasi-likelihood function for the coefficients, we derive a stochastic expansion for functionals of the unit-time residuals, which clarifies some quantitative effect of plugging-in the estimators of the coefficients, thereby enabling us to take several inference procedures for the driving-noise characteristics into account. We also present new classes and methods available in YUIMA for the simulation and the estimation of a Lévy SDE model. We highlight the flexibility of these new advances in YUIMA using simulated and real data.

Bootstrap method for misspecified ergodic Lévy driven stochastic differential equation models

In this paper, we consider possibly misspecified stochastic differential equation models driven by Lévy processes. Regardless of whether the driving noise is Gaussian or not, Gaussian quasi-likelihood estimator can estimate unknown parameters in the drift and scale coefficients. However, in the misspecified case, the asymptotic distribution of the estimator varies by the correction of the misspecification bias, and consistent estimators for the asymptotic variance proposed in the correctly specified case may lose theoretical validity. As one of its solutions, we propose a bootstrap method for approximating the asymptotic distribution. We show that our bootstrap method theoretically works in both correctly specified case and misspecified case without assuming the precise distribution of the driving noise.

Local Asymptotic Mixed Normality via Transition Density Approximation and an Application to Ergodic Jump-Diffusion Processes

We study sufficient conditions for local asymptotic mixed normality. We weaken the sufficient conditions in Theorem 1 of Jeganathan (Sankhya Ser. A 1982) so that they can be applied to a wider class of statistical models including a jump-diffusion model. Moreover, we show that local asymptotic mixed normality of a statistical model generated by approximated transition density functions is implied for the original model. Together with density approximation by means of thresholding techniques, we show local asymptotic normality for a statistical model of discretely observed jump-diffusion processes where the drift coefficient, diffusion coefficient, and jump structure are parametrized. As a consequence, the quasi-maximum-likelihood and Bayes-type estimators proposed in Shimizu and Yoshida (Stat. Inference Stoch. Process. 2006) and Ogihara and Yoshida (Stat. Inference Stoch. Process. 2011) are shown to be asymptotically efficient in this model. Moreover, we can construct asymptotically uniformly most powerful tests for the parameters.

Schwartz type model selection for ergodic stochastic differential equation models

We study the construction of the theoretical foundation of model comparison for ergodic stochastic differential equation (SDE) models and an extension of the applicable scope of the conventional Bayesian information criterion. Different from previous studies, we suppose that the candidate models are possibly misspecified models, and we consider both Wiener and a pure-jump Lévy noise driven SDE. Based on the asymptotic behavior of the marginal quasi-log likelihood, the Schwarz type statistics and stepwise model selection procedure are proposed. We also prove the model selection consistency of the proposed statistics with respect to an optimal model. We conduct some numerical experiments and they support our theoretical findings.

Estimating Diffusion With Compound Poisson Jumps Based On Self-normalized Residuals

We consider parametric estimation of the continuous part of a class of ergodic diffusions with jumps based on high-frequency samples. Various papers previously proposed threshold based methods, which enable us to distinguish whether observed increments have jumps or not at each small-time interval, hence to estimate the unknown parameters separately. However, a data-adapted and quantitative choice of the threshold parameter is known to be a subtle and sensitive problem. In this paper, we present a simple alternative based on the Jarque-Bera normality test for the Euler residuals. Different from the threshold based method, the proposed method does not require any sensitive fine tuning, hence is of practical value. It is shown that under suitable conditions the proposed estimator is asymptotically equivalent to an estimator constructed by the unobserved fluctuation of the continuous part of the solution process, hence is asymptotically efficient. Some numerical experiments are conducted to observe finite-sample performance of the proposed method.

Statistical inference for misspecified ergodic Lévy driven stochastic differential equation models

This paper deals with the estimation problem of misspecified ergodic Lévy driven stochastic differential equation models based on high-frequency samples. We utilize the widely applicable and tractable Gaussian quasi-likelihood approach which focuses on (conditional) mean and variance structure. It is shown that the corresponding Gaussian quasi-likelihood estimators of drift and scale parameters satisfy tail probability estimates and asymptotic normality at the same rate as correctly specified case. In this process, extended Poisson equation for time-homogeneous Feller Markov processes plays an important role to handle misspecification effect. Our result confirms the practical usefulness of the Gaussian quasi-likelihood approach for SDE models, more firmly.

Two-step estimation of ergodic Lévy driven SDE

We consider high frequency samples from ergodic Lévy driven stochastic differential equation (SDE) with drift coefficient $a(x,α)$ and scale coefficient $c(x,γ)$ involving unknown parameters $α$ and $γ$. We suppose that the Lévy measure $ν_{0}$, has all order moments but is not fully specified. We will prove the joint asymptotic normality of some estimators of $α$, $γ$ and a class of functional parameter $\intφ(z)ν_0(dz)$, which are constructed in a two-step manner: first, we use the Gaussian quasi-likelihood for estimation of $(α,γ)$, and then, for estimating $\intφ(z)ν_0(dz)$ we makes use of the method of moments based on the Euler-type residual with the the previously obtained quasi-likelihood estimator.
