HybridNet: Integrating Model-based and Data-driven Learning to Predict Evolution of Dynamical Systems

The robotic systems continuously interact with complex dynamical systems in the physical world. Reliable predictions of spatiotemporal evolution of these dynamical systems, with limited knowledge of system dynamics, are crucial for autonomous operation. In this paper, we present HybridNet, a framework that integrates data-driven deep learning and model-driven computation to reliably predict spatiotemporal evolution of a dynamical systems even with in-exact knowledge of their parameters. A data-driven deep neural network (DNN) with Convolutional LSTM (ConvLSTM) as the backbone is employed to predict the time-varying evolution of the external forces/perturbations. On the other hand, the model-driven computation is performed using Cellular Neural Network (CeNN), a neuro-inspired algorithm to model dynamical systems defined by coupled partial differential equations (PDEs). CeNN converts the intricate numerical computation into a series of convolution operations, enabling a trainable PDE solver. With a feedback control loop, HybridNet can learn the physical parameters governing the system's dynamics in real-time, and accordingly adapt the computation models to enhance prediction accuracy for time-evolving dynamical systems. The experimental results on two dynamical systems, namely, heat convection-diffusion system, and fluid dynamical system, demonstrate that the HybridNet produces higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art deep learning based approach.

All-optical production of ${}^6\textrm{Li}$ molecular BEC in excited hyperfine levels

We present an all-optical method for achieving molecular Bose-Einstein condensates of ${}^6\textrm{Li}$. We demonstrate this with mixtures in the lowest two (1-2), and second lowest two (2-3) hyperfine states. For the 1-2 mixture, we can achieve condensate fractions of 36\%, with $9\times10^4$ atoms at $0.05\textrm{ }μ\textrm{K}$ temperature. For the 2-3 mixture, we have 28\% condensed with $3.2\times10^4$ atoms at $0.05\textrm{ }μ\textrm{K}$ temperature. We use mostly standard methods, but make a number of refinements in the magnetic bias coils compared with earlier work. Our method imposes minimal constraints on subsequent experiments by allowing plenty of optical access while requiring only one high-vacuum chamber. We use an optical system designed around minimizing the number of active elements, and we can accomplish slowing and sub-Doppler cooling with a single tapered amplifier

Cloud Computing - Architecture and Applications

In the era of Internet of Things and with the explosive worldwide growth of electronic data volume, and associated need of processing, analysis, and storage of such humongous volume of data, it has now become mandatory to exploit the power of massively parallel architecture for fast computation. Cloud computing provides a cheap source of such computing framework for large volume of data for real-time applications. It is, therefore, not surprising to see that cloud computing has become a buzzword in the computing fraternity over the last decade. This book presents some critical applications in cloud frameworks along with some innovation design of algorithms and architecture for deployment in cloud environment. It is a valuable source of knowledge for researchers, engineers, practitioners, and graduate and doctoral students working in the field of cloud computing. It will also be useful for faculty members of graduate schools and universities.

A power law of order 1/4 for critical mean-field Swendsen-Wang dynamics

The Swendsen-Wang dynamics is a Markov chain widely used by physicists to sample from the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution of the Ising model. Cooper, Dyer, Frieze and Rue proved that on the complete graph K_n the mixing time of the chain is at most O(n^{1/2}) for all non-critical temperatures. In this paper we show that the mixing time is Theta(1) in high temperatures, Theta(log n) in low temperatures and Theta(n^{1/4}) at criticality. We also provide an upper bound of O(log n) for Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the q-state ferromagnetic Potts model on any tree with n vertices.
