Nonlinearly scalarized rotating black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory

In this paper, we discuss a fully nonlinear mechanism for the formation of scalarized rotating black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where Kerr black holes are linearly stable, but unstable against nonlinear scalar perturbations. With the help of the pseudospectral method, we obtain a spectrum of nonlinearly scalarized rotating black hole solutions with multiple scalarized branches. Moreover, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of nonlinearly scalarized rotating black holes and find the phase transition between Kerr and these scalarized black holes.

Two instabilities of Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in Einstein-Weyl-scalar theory

Stability of Schwarzschild-AdS (SAdS) black hole is investigated in Einstein-Weyl-scalar (EWS) theory with a negative cosmological constant. Here, we introduce a quadratic scalar coupling to the Weyl term, instead of the Gauss-Bonnet term. The linearized EWS theory admits the Lichnerowicz equation for Einstein tensor as well as scalar equation. The linearized Einstein-tensor carries with a regular mass term (${\cal M}^2$), whereas the linearized scalar has a tachyonic mass term ($-3r_0^2/m^2r^6$). Two instabilities of SAdS black hole in EWS theory are found as Gregory-Laflamme and tachyonic instabilities. It shows that the correlated stability conjecture holds for small SAdS black holes obtained from EWS theory by establishing a close relation between Gregory-Laflamme and thermodynamic instabilities. On the other hand, tachyonic instability of SAdS black hole can be used for making five branches of scalarized black holes when considering proper thermodynamic quantities of EWS theory (${\cal M}^2>0$).

Double instability of Schwarzschild black holes in Einstein-Weyl-scalar theory

We study the stability of Schwarzschild black hole in Einstein-Weyl-scalar (EWS) theory with a quadratic scalar coupling to the Weyl term. Its linearized theory admits the Lichnerowicz equation for Ricci tensor as well as scalar equation. The linearized Ricci-tensor carries with a regular mass term ($m^2_2$), whereas the linearized scalar has a tachyonic mass term ($-1/m^2_2$). It turns out that the double instability of Schwarzschild black hole in EWS theory is given by Gregory-Laflamme and tachyonic instabilities. In the small mass regime of $m_2<0.876$, the Schwarzschild black hole becomes unstable against Ricci-tensor perturbations, while tachyonic instability is achieved for $m_2<1.174$. The former would provide a single branch of scalarized black holes, whereas the latter would induce infinite branches of scalarized black holes.

Correlated stability conjecture for AdS black holes in higher dimensional Ricci cubic gravity

We investigate the correlated stability conjecture for AdS black holes obtained from the higher dimensional Ricci cubic gravity. It shows that the Ricci tensor perturbations exhibit unstable modes for small AdS black holes when solving Lichnerowicz equation, leading to Gregory-Laflamme instability. On the other hand, we find that a small black hole is thermodynamically unstable by showing the negative heat capacity. This suggests that the correlated stability conjecture holds for AdS black holes in Ricci cubic gravity. Furthermore, we find a newly non-AdS black hole by solving static Lichnerowicz equations, confirming the threshold mass for Gregory-Laflamme instability.

Analytical approximate solutions for scalarized AdS black holes

The spontaneous scalarization of Schwarzscild-AdS is investigated in the Einstein-scalar-Gauss--Bonnet (ESGB) theory. Firstly, we construct scalarized AdS black holes numerically. Secondly, making use of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), we obtain analytical approximate solutions for scalarized AdS black holes in the ESGB theory. It is found that scalarized AdS black holes constructed numerically are consistent with analytical approximate solutions in the whole space.

Thermodynamic and tachyonic instability for asymptotically flat black holes

It was confirmed that the negative modes of the Euclidean section for asymptotically flat black holes reveal the thermodynamic instability of these black holes in the grand canonical ensemble (GCE). These include Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes. In this work, we develop the relation between thermodynamic instability in the GCE and tachyonic instability for asymptotically flat black holes, where the latter is the onset for obtaining black holes with scalar hair. This implies that the tachyonic instability of black holes when introducing scalar coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term or Maxwell term reflects thermodynamic instability of these black holes in the GCE. We go on further to consider the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole.

Spin-Charge induced spontaneous scalarization of Kerr-Newman black holes

We investigate the tachyonic instability of Kerr-Newman (KN) black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) theory with a positive coupling parameter $α$. This corresponds to exploring the onset of spontaneous scalarization for KN black holes. For this purpose, we use the hyperboloidal foliation method (HFM) to solve the linearized scalar equation numerically. We obtain a 3D graph [$\log_{10}α(a,Q)$] which indicates the onset surface for spontaneous scalarization of KN black holes in the EMS theory. We find that there is no lower bound on the rotational parameter $a$, but its upper bound is given by $M^2-Q^2 \ge a^2$. Also, we confirm that the high rotation enhances spontaneous scalarization of KN black holes in the EMS theory.

Superradiant instability of dyonic Reissner-Nordstrom black holes

We investigate the superradiant instability of dyonic Reissner-Nordström (dRN) black holes with two charges under a charged massive scalar perturbation. Two conditions for possessing a trapping well are obtained from analyzing asymptotic scalar potential and far-region wave functions. It is clear that the superradiant instability is not allowed in the dRN black holes because the conditions for a trapping well are not compatible with the superradiance condition.

Quasibound states of massive scalar around the Kerr black hole

In this work, we obtain quasibound states of a massive scalar around the Kerr black hole. A massive scalar propagating around the Kerr black hole induces the far-region potential with either a trapping well or a tiny well, which produces a peak of resonance or a bound state in the far-region. The former represents superradiant instability, while the latter could accommodate superradiant instability via a positive $ω_I$. If the scalar's energy is really quantized around a tiny well, an ultralight boson could be expressed in terms of a hydrogen-like bound state, leading to a gravitational atom when incorporating superradiant instability. If there are no wells outside the outer horizon, their far-region wave functions represent purely bound state without node. Finally, we discriminate between superradiant instability and stability.

Spin-induced scalarization of Kerr-Newman black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

In this paper, we consider the tachyonic instability of Kerr-Newman (KN) black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) theory with nonminimal negative scalar coupling to Maxwell term, and then obtain a bound $(\frac{a}{r_+}\geq0.4142)$ for spin parameter $a$ of KN black hole in the limit of coupling constant $α\rightarrow-\infty$ by using analytical method. In addition, we perform a $(2+1)$-dimensional time evolution of linearized scalar field perturbation on the KN black hole background by implementing the hyperboloidal foliation method numerically in the EMS theory. It recovers the \textit{spontaneous scalarization} phenomenon for KN black hole in some certain regions of the parameter spaces. We further plot corresponding threshold curves $α(a)$ which describe a boundary between bald KN black holes and scalarized spinning black holes in the EMS theory.

Superradiant instability of a massive scalar on the Kerr spacetime

We investigate the superradiant instability of Kerr black holes under a massive scalar perturbation. We obtain a potential $V_i(r)$ when expanding the scalar potential $V_K(r)$ for large $r$. The Newton potential $V_1(r)$ and the far-region potential $V_2(r)$ are used to explore the superradiant instability, while $V_3(r)$ matches a geodesic potential $V_{gK}(r)$ for a neutral particle moving around the Kerr black hole. Thus, $V_{gK}(r)$ is employed to fix the separation constant. We obtain a condition for a trapping well to possess a quasibound state in the Kerr black holes by analyzing the Newton potential $V_1(r)$and far-region wave functions obtained from $V_2(r)$. The other condition for no trapping well (a tiny well) is found to generate an asymptotic bound state. Finally, we discuss an ultralight boson whose potential has a tiny well located at asymptotic region.

Superradiant instability in slowly rotating Kerr-Newman black holes

We study the superradiant instability of slowly rotating Kerr-Newman (sKN) black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation. These black holes resemble closer the Reissner-Nordström black holes than the Kerr-Newman black holes. We compute the negative absorption cross section of a massive scalar for superradiant scattering in the low frequency limit. From the scalar potential analysis, we find that the superradiant instability is not allowed in the sKN black holes because the condition for a trapping well is not compatible with the superradiance condition. However, the rate of energy extraction might grow exponentially if the sKN black hole is placed inside a reflecting cavity. Finally, we obtain the condition for the trapping well to possess quasibound states in the sKN black holes by analyzing asymptotic scalar potential and wave functions.

Revisiting superradiant stability of Kerr-Newman black holes under a charged massive scalar

We revisit the superradiant stability of Kerr-Newman black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation. We obtain a newly suitable potential which is not singular at the outer horizon when a radial equation is expressed the Schrödinger-type equation in terms of the tortoise coordinate. From the potential analysis, we find a condition for the superradiant stability of Kerr-Newman black holes.

Conditions for superradiant instability of the Kerr-Newman black holes

We find two conditions for superradiant instability of Kerr-Newman black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation by analyzing asymptotic scalar potential and far-region wave function. Actually, they correspond to the condition for getting a trapping well. Also, we obtain the conditions for superradiant stability of Kerr-Newman black holes which states that there is no trapping well. The analysis is applied to Kerr black holes to find a condition for superradiant instability.

Slowly rotating black holes and their scalarization

We study scalarization of slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (GB)-Chern-Simons (CS) theory. In the slow rotation approximation of $a\ll1$ with rotation parameter $a$, the GB term is given by a term for Schwarzschild black hole, whereas the CS term takes a linear term of $a$. The tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes represents the onset of spontaneous scalarization. We use the (2+1)-dimensional hyperboloidal foliation method to show the tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes by considering the time evolution of a spherically symmetric scalar mode. A threshold (existence) curve is obtained from the constant scalar modes under time evolution, which means the boundary between stable and unstable black holes. It is found that the slowly rotating black holes turn out to be unstable against a spherically symmetric scalar-mode propagation for positive coupling $α$. However, we could not find tachyonic instability and any $a$-bound for scalarization for negative coupling $α$.

Rotating scalarized black holes in scalar couplings to two topological terms

The tachyonic instability of the Kerr black holes is analyzed in the Einstein-scalar theory with the quadratic scalar couplings to two topological terms which are parity-even Gauss-Bonnet and parity-odd Chern-Simons terms. For positive coupling $α$, we use the (2+1)-dimensional hyperboloidal foliation method to derive the threshold curve which is the boundary between stable and unstable Kerr black holes by considering a spherically symmetric scalar-mode perturbation. In case of negative coupling, a newly bound of $a\ge0.26$ with $a$ the rotation parameter is found for unstable Kerr black holes and its threshold curve is derived.

Shadow cast by a rotating black hole with anisotropic matter

We obtain the shadow cast induced by the rotating black hole with an anisotropic matter. A Killing tensor representing the hidden symmetry is derived explicitly. The existence of separability structure implies a complete integrability of the geodesic motion. We analyze an effective potential around the unstable circular photon orbits to show that one side of the black hole is brighter than the other side. Further, it is shown that the inclusion of the anisotropic matter ($Kr^{2(1-w)}$) has an effect on the observables of the shadow cast. The shadow observables include approximate shadow radius $R_s$, distortion parameter $δ_s$, area of the shadow $A_s$, and oblateness $D_{os}$.

Scalarization of slowly rotating black holes

It is interesting to note that most black holes are born very slowly rotating. We investigate scalarization of slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-scalar-Chern-Simons (EsCS) theory. In the slow rotation approximation, the CS term takes a linear form of rotation parameter $a$ which determines the tachyonic instability. The tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes represents the onset of spontaneous scalarization. It is shown that the slowly rotating black holes are unstable against a spherically symmetric scalar-mode perturbation for positive coupling $α$, whereas these black holes are unstable for negative coupling without any $a$-bound.
