Reflecting on Design Paradigms of Animated Data Video Tools

Animated data videos have gained significant popularity in recent years. However, authoring data videos remains challenging due to the complexity of creating and coordinating diverse components (e.g., visualization, animation, audio, etc.). Although numerous tools have been developed to streamline the process, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding and reflection of their design paradigms to inform future development. To address this gap, we propose a framework for understanding data video creation tools along two dimensions: what data video components to create and coordinate, including visual, motion, narrative, and audio components, and how to support the creation and coordination. By applying the framework to analyze 46 existing tools, we summarized key design paradigms of creating and coordinating each component based on the varying work distribution for humans and AI in these tools. Finally, we share our detailed reflections, highlight gaps from a holistic view, and discuss future directions to address them.

Narrative Player: Reviving Data Narratives with Visuals

Data-rich documents are commonly found across various fields such as business, finance, and science. However, a general limitation of these documents for reading is their reliance on text to convey data and facts. Visual representation of text aids in providing a satisfactory reading experience in comprehension and engagement. However, existing work emphasizes presenting the insights of local text context, rather than fully conveying data stories within the whole paragraphs and engaging readers. To provide readers with satisfactory data stories, this paper presents Narrative Player, a novel method that automatically revives data narratives with consistent and contextualized visuals. Specifically, it accepts a paragraph and corresponding data table as input and leverages LLMs to characterize the clauses and extract contextualized data facts. Subsequently, the facts are transformed into a coherent visualization sequence with a carefully designed optimization-based approach. Animations are also assigned between adjacent visualizations to enable seamless transitions. Finally, the visualization sequence, transition animations, and audio narration generated by text-to-speech technologies are rendered into a data video. The evaluation results showed that the automatic-generated data videos were well-received by participants and experts for enhancing reading.

A parallel domain decomposition method for solving elliptic equations on manifolds

We propose a new numerical domain decomposition method for solving elliptic equations on compact Riemannian manifolds. One advantage of this method is its ability to bypass the need for global triangulations or grids on the manifolds. Additionally, it features a highly parallel iterative scheme. To verify its efficacy, we conduct numerical experiments on some $4$-dimensional manifolds without and with boundary.

GRB 241030A: a prompt thermal X-ray emission component and diverse origin of the very early UVOT WHITE and U band emission

We present a detailed analysis of the long-duration GRB 241030A detected by {\it Swift}. Thanks to the rapid response of XRT and UVOT, the strongest part of the prompt emission of GRB 241030A has been well measured simultaneously from optical to hard X-ray band. The time-resolved WHITE band emission shows strong variability, largely tracing the activity of the prompt gamma-ray emission, may be produced by internal shocks too. The joint analysis of the XRT and BAT data reveals the presence of a thermal component with a temperature of a few keV, which can be interpreted as the photosphere radiation, and the upper limit of the Lorentz factor of this region is found to range between approximately 20 and 80. The time-resolved analysis of the initial U-band exposure data yields a very rapid rise ($ \sim t^{5.3}$) with a bright peak reaching 13.6 AB magnitude around 410 seconds, which is most likely attributed to the onset of the external shock emission. The richness and fineness of early observational data have made this burst a unique sample for studying the various radiation mechanisms of gamma-ray bursts.

Composing Data Stories with Meta Relations

To facilitate the creation of compelling and engaging data stories, AI-powered tools have been introduced to automate the three stages in the workflow: analyzing data, organizing findings, and creating visuals. However, these tools rely on data-level information to derive inflexible relations between findings. Therefore, they often create one-size-fits-all data stories. Differently, our formative study reveals that humans heavily rely on meta relations between these findings from diverse domain knowledge and narrative intent, going beyond datasets, to compose their findings into stylized data stories. Such a gap indicates the importance of introducing meta relations to elevate AI-created stories to a satisfactory level. Though necessary, it is still unclear where and how AI should be involved in working with humans on meta relations. To answer the question, we conducted an exploratory user study with Remex, an AI-powered data storytelling tool that suggests meta relations in the analysis stage and applies meta relations for data story organization. The user study reveals various findings about introducing AI for meta relations into the storytelling workflow, such as the benefit of considering meta relations and their diverse expected usage scenarios. Finally, the paper concludes with lessons and suggestions about applying meta relations to compose data stories to hopefully inspire future research.

Flat panel laser displays enabled by large-scale visible photonic integrated circuits

Laser-based displays are highly sought after for their superior brightness and color performance, especially in advanced applications like augmented reality (AR). However, their broader adoption has been hindered by bulky projector designs and complex optical module assemblies. Here, we introduce a new laser display architecture enabled by large-scale visible photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to address these challenges. Unlike previous projector-style laser displays, this architecture features an ultra-thin, flat-panel form factor, replacing bulky free-space illumination modules with a single, high-performance photonic chip. Centimeter-scale PIC devices, which integrate thousands of distinct optical components on-chip, are carefully tailored to achieve high display uniformity, contrast, and efficiency. We demonstrate a 2 mm-thick flat-panel laser display combining the PIC with a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) panel, achieving 211% of the color gamut and more than 80% volume reduction compared to traditional LCoS displays. We further showcase its application in a see-through AR system. Our work represents a major advancement in the integration of nanophotonics with display technology, enabling a range of new display concepts, from high-performance immersive displays to slim-panel 3D holography.

Detection of an Orphan X-ray Flare from a Blazar Candidate EP240709a with Einstein Probe

Blazars are often observed to flare across multiple wavelengths. Orphan flares from blazars have been only detected a few times, providing an opportunity to understand the structure of the jet in the accreting system. We report a remarkable orphan X-ray flare from a blazar candidate EP240709a, detected by Einstein Probe (EP) in July 2024. The multi-band spectral properties and variability support EP240709a as a high-energy peaked BL Lacertae-type object. The flux in 0.5-10 keV increases by at least 28 times to the value of low state in 2020, with non-detection of remarkable flaring in other bands during the same period. EP240709a exhibits the harder-when-brighter tendency in the X-ray band during the orphan flare, while its infrared-optical spectra are featureless. We employ one-zone and two-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton models to perform the spectral energy distribution fitting. Detecting this rare orphan flare shows the potential of EP in discovering peculiar activities from AGN in high-cadence X-ray sky surveys.

FlowMamba: Learning Point Cloud Scene Flow with Global Motion Propagation

Scene flow methods based on deep learning have achieved impressive performance. However, current top-performing methods still struggle with ill-posed regions, such as extensive flat regions or occlusions, due to insufficient local evidence. In this paper, we propose a novel global-aware scene flow estimation network with global motion propagation, named FlowMamba. The core idea of FlowMamba is a novel Iterative Unit based on the State Space Model (ISU), which first propagates global motion patterns and then adaptively integrates the global motion information with previously hidden states. As the irregular nature of point clouds limits the performance of ISU in global motion propagation, we propose a feature-induced ordering strategy (FIO). The FIO leverages semantic-related and motion-related features to order points into a sequence characterized by spatial continuity. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of FlowMamba, with 21.9\% and 20.5\% EPE3D reduction from the best published results on FlyingThings3D and KITTI datasets. Specifically, our FlowMamba is the first method to achieve millimeter-level prediction accuracy in FlyingThings3D and KITTI. Furthermore, the proposed ISU can be seamlessly embedded into existing iterative networks as a plug-and-play module, improving their estimation accuracy significantly.

Capturing primordial non-Gaussian signatures in the late Universe by multi-scale extrema of the cosmic log-density field

We construct two new summary statistics, the scale-dependent peak height function (scale-PKHF) and the scale-dependent valley depth function (scale-VLYDF) of matter density, and forecast their constraining power on primordial non-Gaussianity and cosmological parameters based on \textsc{Quijote} and \textsc{Quijote-PNG} simulations at $z=0$. With the Fisher analysis, we demonstrate that these statistics outperform the power spectrum and bispectrum. Key findings include: (1) the constraint on the scalar spectral index $n_s$ obtained from the scale-VLYDF/scale-PKHF is 1.59/1.10 times tighter than that from the joint analysis of power spectrum and bispectrum; (2) the combination of the two statistics yields a slight improvement in constraining $\{f_\mathrm{NL}^\mathrm{local}, f_\mathrm{NL}^\mathrm{equil}\}$ over the power spectrum-bispectrum combination, and provides a 1.39-fold improvement in the constraint on $f_\mathrm{NL}^\mathrm{ortho}$; (3) after incorporating the power spectrum with our new statistics, parameter constraints surpass those from power spectrum-bispectrum combination by factors up to 2.93. This work offers an effective scheme for extracting primordial signals from the late Universe, paving the way for further breakthroughs in precision cosmology.

Optimization of Delivery Routes for Fresh E-commerce in Pre-warehouse Mode

With the development of the economy, fresh food e-commerce has experienced rapid growth. One of the core competitive advantages of fresh food e-commerce platforms lies in selecting an appropriate logistics distribution model. This study focuses on the front warehouse model, aiming to minimize distribution costs. Considering the perishable nature and short shelf life of fresh food, a distribution route optimization model is constructed, and the saving mileage method is designed to determine the optimal distribution scheme. The results indicate that under certain conditions, different distribution schemes significantly impact the performance of fresh food e-commerce platforms. Based on a review of domestic and international research, this paper takes Dingdong Maicai as an example to systematically introduce the basic concepts of distribution route optimization in fresh food e-commerce platforms under the front warehouse model, analyze the advantages of logistics distribution, and thoroughly examine the importance of distribution routes for fresh products.

Neural Search Space in Gboard Decoder

Gboard Decoder produces suggestions by looking for paths that best match input touch points on the context aware search space, which is backed by the language Finite State Transducers (FST). The language FST is currently an N-gram language model (LM). However, N-gram LMs, limited in context length, are known to have sparsity problem under device model size constraint. In this paper, we propose \textbf{Neural Search Space} which substitutes the N-gram LM with a Neural Network LM (NN-LM) and dynamically constructs the search space during decoding. Specifically, we integrate the long range context awareness of NN-LM into the search space by converting its outputs given context, into the language FST at runtime. This involves language FST structure redesign, pruning strategy tuning, and data structure optimizations. Online experiments demonstrate improved quality results, reducing Words Modified Ratio by [0.26\%, 1.19\%] on various locales with acceptable latency increases. This work opens new avenues for further improving keyboard decoding quality by enhancing neural LM more directly.

The Detection Prospect of the Counter Jet Radiation in the Late Afterglow of GRB 170817A

The central engine of a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) is widely believed to launch a pair of oppositely moving jets, i.e. the forward jet moving towards us and the counter jet regressing away. The forward jet generates the radiation typically observed in GRBs, while the counter jet has not been detected yet due to its dimness. GRB 170817A, a short burst associated with a binary neutron star merger event, is a nearby event ($z=0.0097$) with an off-axis structured energetic forward jet and hence probably the most suitable target for searching the counter jet radiation. Assuming the same properties for the forward and counter jet components as well as the shock parameters, the fit to the multi-wavelength afterglow emission of GRB 170817A suggests a peak time $\sim {\rm quite~a~few}\times 10^{3}$ day of the counter jet radiation, but the detection prospect of this new component is not promising. Anyhow, if the shock parameters ($ε_{\rm e}$ and $ε_{\rm B}$) of the counter jet component are (a few times) higher than that of the forward shock e.g., the posterior results of the magnetic energy fraction of the forward shock and the counter jet are $\log_{10}ε_{\rm B}=-4.23^{+1.42}_{-0.69}$ and $\log_{10}ε_{\rm B, cj}=-3.65^{+3.06}_{-2.11}$, respectively), as still allowed by the current data, the counter jet afterglow emission will be enhanced and hence may be detected. A few hour exposure by JWST in F356W band will stringently test such a scenario.

Probing blackbody components in gamma-ray bursts from black hole neutrino-dominated accretion flows

A stellar-mass black hole (BH) surrounded by a neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) is generally considered to be the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Neutrinos escaping from the disk will annihilate out of the disk to produce the fireball that could power GRBs with blackbody (BB) components. The initial GRB jet power and fireball launch radius are related to the annihilation luminosity and annihilation height of the NDAFs, respectively. In this paper, we collect 7 GRBs with known redshifts and identified BB components to test whether the NDAF model works. We find that, in most cases, the values of the accretion rates and the central BH properties are all in the reasonable range, suggesting that these BB components indeed originate from the neutrino annihilation process.

The Mitochondrial Genome of Cathaya argyrophylla Reaches 18.99 Mb: Analysis of Super-Large Mitochondrial Genomes in Pinaceae

Mitochondrial genomes in the Pinaceae family are notable for their large size and structural complexity. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the mitochondrial genome of Cathaya argyrophylla, an endangered and endemic Pinaceae species, uncovering a genome size of 18.99 Mb, meaning the largest mitochondrial genome reported to date. To investigate the mechanisms behind this exceptional size, we conducted comparative analyses with other Pinaceae species possessing both large and small mitochondrial genomes, as well as with other gymnosperms. We focused on repeat sequences, transposable element activity, RNA editing events, chloroplast-derived sequence transfers (mtpts), and sequence homology with nuclear genomes. Our findings indicate that while Cathaya argyrophylla and other extremely large Pinaceae mitochondrial genomes contain substantial amounts of repeat sequences and show increased activity of LINEs and LTR retrotransposons, these factors alone do not fully account for the genome expansion. Notably, we observed a significant incorporation of chloroplast-derived sequences in Cathaya argyrophylla and other large mitochondrial genomes, suggesting that extensive plastid-to-mitochondrial DNA transfer may play a crucial role in genome enlargement. Additionally, large mitochondrial genomes exhibited distinct patterns of RNA editing and limited similarity with nuclear genomes compared to smaller genomes. These results suggest that the massive mitochondrial genomes in Pinaceae are likely the result of multiple contributing factors, including repeat sequences, transposon activity, and extensive plastid sequence incorporation. Our study enhances the understanding of mitochondrial genome evolution in plants and provides valuable genetic information for the conservation and study of Cathaya argyrophylla.

Data Playwright: Authoring Data Videos with Annotated Narration

Creating data videos that effectively narrate stories with animated visuals requires substantial effort and expertise. A promising research trend is leveraging the easy-to-use natural language (NL) interaction to automatically synthesize data video components from narrative content like text narrations, or NL commands that specify user-required designs. Nevertheless, previous research has overlooked the integration of narrative content and specific design authoring commands, leading to generated results that lack customization or fail to seamlessly fit into the narrative context. To address these issues, we introduce a novel paradigm for creating data videos, which seamlessly integrates users' authoring and narrative intents in a unified format called annotated narration, allowing users to incorporate NL commands for design authoring as inline annotations within the narration text. Informed by a formative study on users' preference for annotated narration, we develop a prototype system named Data Playwright that embodies this paradigm for effective creation of data videos. Within Data Playwright, users can write annotated narration based on uploaded visualizations. The system's interpreter automatically understands users' inputs and synthesizes data videos with narration-animation interplay, powered by large language models. Finally, users can preview and fine-tune the video. A user study demonstrated that participants can effectively create data videos with Data Playwright by effortlessly articulating their desired outcomes through annotated narration.

Identifying Halos in Cosmological Simulations with Continuous Wavelet Analysis: The 2D Case

Continuous wavelet analysis is gaining popularity in science and engineering for its ability to analyze data across spatial and scale domains simultaneously. In this study, we introduce a wavelet-based method to identify halos and assess its feasibility in two-dimensional (2D) scenarios. We begin with the generation of four pseudo-2D datasets from the SIMBA dark matter simulation by compressing thin slices of three-dimensional (3D) data into 2D. We then calculate the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) directly from the particle distributions, identify local maxima that represent actual halos, and segment the CWT to delineate halo boundaries. A comparison with the traditional friends-of-friends (FOF) method shows that our CWT-identified halos, while contain slightly fewer particles, have smoother boundaries and are more compact in dense regions. In contrast, the CWT method can link particles over greater distances to form halos in sparse regions due to its spatial segmentation scheme. The spatial distribution and halo power spectrum of both CWT and FOF halos demonstrate substantial consistency, validating the 2D applicability of CWT for halo detection. Our identification scheme operates with a linear time complexity of $\mathcal{O}(N)$, suggesting its suitability for analyzing significantly larger datasets in the future.

Turbulence revealed by wavelet transform: power spectrum and intermittency for the velocity field of the cosmic baryonic fluid

We use continuous wavelet transform techniques to construct the global and environment-dependent wavelet statistics, such as energy spectrum and kurtosis, to study the fluctuation and intermittency of the turbulent motion in the cosmic fluid velocity field with the IllustrisTNG simulation data. We find that the peak scale of the energy spectrum define a characteristic scale, which can be regarded as the integral scale of turbulence, and the Nyquist wavenumber can be regarded as the dissipation scale. With these two characteristic scales, the energy spectrum can be divided into the energy-containing range, the inertial range and the dissipation range of turbulence. The wavelet kurtosis is an increasing function of the wavenumber $k$, first grows rapidly then slowly with $k$, indicating that the cosmic fluid becomes increasingly intermittent with $k$. In the energy-containing range, the energy spectrum increases significantly from $z = 2$ to $1$, but remains almost unchanged from $z = 1$ to $0$. We find that both the environment-dependent spectrum and kurtosis are similar to the global ones, and the magnitude of the spectrum is smallest in the lowest-density and largest in the highest-density environment, suggesting that the cosmic fluid is more turbulent in a high-density than in a low-density environment. In the inertial range, the energy spectrum's exponent is steeper than both the Kolmogorov and Burgers exponents, indicating more efficient energy transfer compared to Kolmogorov or Burgers turbulence.

From Data to Story: Towards Automatic Animated Data Video Creation with LLM-based Multi-Agent Systems

Creating data stories from raw data is challenging due to humans' limited attention spans and the need for specialized skills. Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) offer great opportunities to develop systems with autonomous agents to streamline the data storytelling workflow. Though multi-agent systems have benefits such as fully realizing LLM potentials with decomposed tasks for individual agents, designing such systems also faces challenges in task decomposition, performance optimization for sub-tasks, and workflow design. To better understand these issues, we develop Data Director, an LLM-based multi-agent system designed to automate the creation of animated data videos, a representative genre of data stories. Data Director interprets raw data, breaks down tasks, designs agent roles to make informed decisions automatically, and seamlessly integrates diverse components of data videos. A case study demonstrates Data Director's effectiveness in generating data videos. Throughout development, we have derived lessons learned from addressing challenges, guiding further advancements in autonomous agents for data storytelling. We also shed light on future directions for global optimization, human-in-the-loop design, and the application of advanced multi-modal LLMs.
