High-fidelity tabletop nanoscopy enabled by non-linear spectral preconditioning

Ptychography is a powerful lensless imaging technique that overcomes conventional numerical aperture limits to achieve diffraction-limited resolution. While routine at high-brilliance synchrotron facilities, its application to laboratory-scale sources is primarily limited by low photon flux. Under these conditions, the wide dynamic range of diffraction signals presents a critical bottleneck where detector bit-depth limitations hinder the simultaneous recording of low-frequency intensity and high-frequency details. Currently, most high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging methods enforce strict radiometric linearity, assuming the fused intensity must be linearly proportional to the squared modulus of the wavefront to satisfy Poisson likelihood models. In this paper, we introduce a multi-scale non-linear fusion approach into the ptychographic pipeline, demonstrating that strict linearity is not a prerequisite for accurate reconstruction. This method mitigates the traditional trade-off between noise suppression and physical fidelity, enables robust imaging under strong dispersion, and significantly broadens the effective spectral bandwidth.

Breaking optoelectronic SNR limitations via physics-consistent computational diffractive imaging

Ptychography is a powerful lensless imaging technique capable of approaching the diffraction limit, yet its performance is increasingly constrained by non-ideal detection hardware. In photon-limited measurements, weak high-frequency diffraction signals often overlap with spatially heterogeneous detector noise, whereas most reconstruction algorithms still treat the detector as an ideal measurement plane. Here, we introduce detector-informed measurement consistency into ptychographic reconstruction. By calibrating the pixelwise sensor response, the method construct a spatially resolved confidence map and embed it into the iterative amplitude constraint, allowing unreliable detector residuals to be down-weighted while preserving physically meaningful diffraction information. Experiments across transmission, reflection, and weak biological phase imaging show improved diffraction-data quality, an approximately twofold signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement, and reconstruction approaching the Rayleigh limit with a measured (k)-factor of about 0.65. Compared with previous advanced denoising methods, the proposed framework achieves a better balance between suppressing detector-induced background and preserving structural diffraction information. These results show that detector reliability can be used as an in-loop physical constraint to extend the performance of ptychographic imaging with imperfect sensors.

"I am here for you": How relational conversational AI appeals to adolescents, especially those who are socially and emotionally vulnerable

General-purpose conversational AI chatbots and AI companions increasingly provide young adolescents with emotionally supportive conversations, raising questions about how conversational style shapes anthropomorphism and emotional reliance. In a preregistered online experiment with 284 adolescent-parent dyads, youth aged 11-15 and their parents read two matched transcripts in which a chatbot responded to an everyday social problem using either a relational style (first-person, affiliative, commitment language) or a transparent style (explicit nonhumanness, informational tone). Adolescents more often preferred the relational than the transparent style, whereas parents were more likely to prefer transparent style than adolescents. Adolescents rated the relational chatbot as more human-like, likable, trustworthy and emotionally close, while perceiving both styles as similarly helpful. Adolescents who preferred relational style had lower family and peer relationship quality and higher stress and anxiety than those preferring transparent style or both chatbots. These findings identify conversational style as a key design lever for youth AI safety, showing that relational framing heightens anthropomorphism, trust and emotional closeness and can be especially appealing to socially and emotionally vulnerable adolescents, who may be at increased risk for emotional reliance on conversational AI.

Young children's anthropomorphism of an AI chatbot: Brain activation and the role of parent co-presence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots powered by a large language model (LLM) are entering young children's learning and play, yet little is known about how young children construe these agents or how such construals relate to engagement. We examined anthropomorphism of a social AI chatbot during collaborative storytelling and asked how children's attributions related to their behavior and prefrontal activation. Children at ages 5-6 (N = 23) completed three storytelling sessions: interacting with (1) an AI chatbot only, (2) a parent only, and (3) the AI and a parent together. After the sessions, children completed an interview assessing anthropomorphism toward both the AI chatbot and the parent. Behavioral engagement was indexed by the conversational turn count (CTC) ratio, and concurrent fNIRS measured oxygenated hemoglobin in bilateral vmPFC and dmPFC regions. Children reported higher anthropomorphism for parents than for the AI chatbot overall, although AI ratings were relatively high for perceptive abilities and epistemic states. Anthropomorphism was not associated with CTC. In the right dmPFC, higher perceptive scores were associated with greater activation during the AI-only condition and with lower activation during the AI+Parent condition. Exploratory analyses indicated that higher dmPFC activation during the AI-only condition correlated with higher end-of-session "scared" mood ratings. Findings suggest that stronger perceptive anthropomorphism can be associated with greater brain activation related to interpreting the AI's mental states, whereas parent co-presence may help some children interpret and regulate novel AI interactions. These results may have design implications for encouraging parent-AI co-use in early childhood.

Federated Conditional Conformal Prediction via Generative Models

Conformal Prediction (CP) provides distribution-free uncertainty quantification by constructing prediction sets that guarantee coverage of the true labels. This reliability makes CP valuable for high-stakes federated learning scenarios such as multi-center healthcare. However, standard CP assumes i.i.d. data, which is violated in federated settings where client distributions differ substantially. Existing federated CP methods address this by maintaining marginal coverage on each client, but such guarantees often fail to reflect input-conditional uncertainty. In this work, we propose Federated Conditional Conformal Prediction (Fed-CCP) via generative models, which aims for conditional coverage that adapts to local data heterogeneity. Fed-CCP leverages generative models, such as normalizing flows or diffusion models, to approximate conditional data distributions without requiring the sharing of raw data. This enables each client to locally calibrate conformal scores that reflect its unique uncertainty, while preserving global consistency through federated aggregation. Experiments on real datasets demonstrate that Fed-CCP achieves more adaptive prediction sets.

Coded Caching Scheme for Partially Connected Linear Networks Via Multi-antenna Placement Delivery Array

In this paper, we study the coded caching scheme for the $(K,L,M_{\text{T}},M_{\text{U}},N)$ partially connected linear network, where there are $N$ files each of which has an equal size, $K+L-1$ transmitters and $K$ users; each user and transmitter caches at most $M_{\text{U}}$ and $M_{\text{T}}$ files respectively; each user cyclically communicates with $L$ transmitters. The goal is to design caching and delivery schemes to reduce the transmission latency measured by the metric normalized delivery time (NDT). By delicately designing the data placement of the transmitters and users according to the topology, we show that a combinatorial structure called multiple-antenna placement delivery array (MAPDA), which was originally proposed for the multiple-input single-output broadcast channels, can be also used to design schemes for the partially connected linear network. Then, based on existing MAPDAs and our constructing approach, we propose new schemes that achieve the optimal NDT when $ {M_\text{T}}+ {M_\text{U}}\geq N$ and smaller NDT than that of the existing schemes when (${M_\text{T}}+ {M_\text{U}}\leq N$, $\frac{M_\text{U}}{N}+\frac{M_\text{T}}{N} \frac{L}{K}\left\lceil \frac{K}{L} \right\rceil \geq 1$) or ($ {M_\text{U}}+ {M_\text{T}}< N, \frac{K}{L}\notin\mathbb{Z}^+$). Moreover, our schemes operate in one-shot linear delivery and significantly reduce the subpacketizations compared to the existing scheme, which implies that our schemes have a wider range of applications and lower complexity of implementation.

Almost Beatty Partitions

Given $0<α<1$, the Beatty sequence of density $α$ is the sequence $B_α=(\lfloor n/α\rfloor)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$. Beatty's theorem states that if $α,β$ are irrational numbers with $α+β=1$, then the Beatty sequences $B_α$ and $B_β$ partition the positive integers, that is, each positive integer belongs to exactly one of these two sequences. On the other hand, Uspensky showed that this result breaks down completely for partitions into three (or more) sequences: There does not exist a single triple $(α,β,γ)$ such that the Beatty sequences $B_α,B_β,B_γ$ partition the positive integers. In this paper we consider the question of how close we can come to a three-part Beatty partition by considering "almost" Beatty sequences, that is, sequences that represent small perturbations of an "exact" Beatty sequence. We first characterize all cases in which there exists a partition into two exact Beatty sequences and one almost Beatty sequence with given densities, and we determine the approximation error involved. We then give two general constructions that yield partitions into one exact Beatty sequence and two almost Beatty sequences with prescribed densities, and we determine the approximation error in these constructions. Finally, we show that in many situations these constructions are best-possible in the sense that they yield the closest approximation to a three-part Beatty partition.

Giant biquadratic interaction induced magnetic anisotropy in the iron-based superconductor AxFe2-ySe2

The emergence of the electron-pocket only iron-based superconductor AxFe2-ySe2 (A = alkali metal) challenges the Fermi-surface nesting picture established in iron-pnictides. It was widely believed that magnetism is correlated with the superconductivity in AxFe2-ySe2. Unfortunately, the highly anisotropic exchange parameters and the disagreement between theoretical calculations and experimental results triggered a fierce debate on the nature of magnetism in AxFe2-ySe2. Here we find that the strong magnetic anisotropy is from the anisotropic biquadratic interaction. In order to accurately obtain the magnetic interaction parameters, we propose a universal method, which does not need including other high energy configurations as did in conventional energy mapping method. We show that our model successfully captures the magnetic interactions in AxFe2-ySe2 and correctly predicts the spin wave spectrum, in quantitative agreement with the experimental observation. These results suggest that the local moment picture, including the biquadratic term, can describe accurately the magnetic properties and spin excitations in AxFe2-ySe2, which sheds new light on the future study of the high-Tc iron-based superconductors.

Oxygen Vacancy Induced Flat Phonon Mode at FeSe /SrTiO3 interface

A high-frequency optical phonon mode of SrTiO3 (STO) was found to assist the high-temperature superconductivity observed recently at the interface between monolayer FeSe and STO substrate. However, the origin of this mode is not clear. Through first-principles calculations, we find that there is a novel polar phonon mode on the surface layers of the STO substrate, which does not exist in the STO crystals. The oxygen vacancies near the FeSe/STO interface drives the dispersion of this phonon mode to be flat and lowers its energy, whereas the charge transfer between STO substrate and FeSe monolayer further reduces its energy to 81 meV. This energy is in good agreement with the experimental value fitted by Lee et al. for the phonon mode responsible for the observed replica band separations and the increased superconducting gap. The oxygen-vacancy-induced flat and polar phonon mode provides clues for understanding the origin of high Tc superconductivity at the FeSe/STO interface.
