Black-Box Visual Prompt Engineering for Mitigating Object Hallucination in Large Vision Language Models

Large Vision Language Models (LVLMs) often suffer from object hallucination, which undermines their reliability. Surprisingly, we find that simple object-based visual prompting -- overlaying visual cues (e.g., bounding box, circle) on images -- can significantly mitigate such hallucination; however, different visual prompts (VPs) vary in effectiveness. To address this, we propose Black-Box Visual Prompt Engineering (BBVPE), a framework to identify optimal VPs that enhance LVLM responses without needing access to model internals. Our approach employs a pool of candidate VPs and trains a router model to dynamically select the most effective VP for a given input image. This black-box approach is model-agnostic, making it applicable to both open-source and proprietary LVLMs. Evaluations on benchmarks such as POPE and CHAIR demonstrate that BBVPE effectively reduces object hallucination.

A Systematic Survey of Automatic Prompt Optimization Techniques

Since the advent of large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering has been a crucial step for eliciting desired responses for various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. However, prompt engineering remains an impediment for end users due to rapid advances in models, tasks, and associated best practices. To mitigate this, Automatic Prompt Optimization (APO) techniques have recently emerged that use various automated techniques to help improve the performance of LLMs on various tasks. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey summarizing the current progress and remaining challenges in this field. We provide a formal definition of APO, a 5-part unifying framework, and then proceed to rigorously categorize all relevant works based on their salient features therein. We hope to spur further research guided by our framework.

Machine Learning for Raman Spectroscopy-based Cyber-Marine Fish Biochemical Composition Analysis

The rapid and accurate detection of biochemical compositions in fish is a crucial real-world task that facilitates optimal utilization and extraction of high-value products in the seafood industry. Raman spectroscopy provides a promising solution for quickly and non-destructively analyzing the biochemical composition of fish by associating Raman spectra with biochemical reference data using machine learning regression models. This paper investigates different regression models to address this task and proposes a new design of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for jointly predicting water, protein, and lipids yield. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to conduct a successful study employing CNNs to analyze the biochemical composition of fish based on a very small Raman spectroscopic dataset. Our approach combines a tailored CNN architecture with the comprehensive data preparation procedure, effectively mitigating the challenges posed by extreme data scarcity. The results demonstrate that our CNN can significantly outperform two state-of-the-art CNN models and multiple traditional machine learning models, paving the way for accurate and automated analysis of fish biochemical composition.

Dynamic Pricing of Electric Vehicle Charging Station Alliances Under Information Asymmetry

Due to the centralization of charging stations (CSs), CSs are organized as charging station alliances (CSAs) in the commercial competition. Under this situation, this paper studies the profit-oriented dynamic pricing strategy of CSAs. As the practicability basis, a privacy-protected bidirectional real-time information interaction framework is designed, under which the status of EVs is utilized as the reference for pricing, and the prices of CSs are the reference for charging decisions. Based on this framework, the decision-making models of EVs and CSs are established, in which the uncertainty caused by the information asymmetry between EVs and CSs and the bounded rationality of EV users are integrated. To solve the pricing decision model, the evolutionary game theory is adopted to describe the dynamic pricing game among CSAs, the equilibrium of which gives the optimal pricing strategy. Finally, the case study results in a real urban area in Shanghai, China verifies the practicability of the framework and the effectiveness of the dynamic pricing strategy.

Helical Phononic Modes Induced by a Screw Dislocation

In this study, we investigate a one-dimensional (1D) unidirectional phononic waveguide embedded within a three-dimensional (3D) hexagonal close-packed phononic crystal, achieved by the introduction of a screw dislocation. This approach does not rely on the non-trivial topological characteristics of the 3D crystal. We discover that this dislocation induces a pair of helical modes, characterized by their orthogonal $x$- and $y$-directional displacements being out of phase by 90 degrees, which results in a distinctive rotational motion. These helical modes demonstrate directional propagation, tightly linked to the helicity of the screw dislocation. Through considerations of symmetry, we reveal that the emergence of these helical modes is governed by the symmetry of the screw dislocation itself. Our findings not only provide insights into the interplay between dislocation-induced symmetry and wave propagation in phononic systems but also open new avenues for designing directionally selective waveguides without relying on the crystal's topological properties.

FR-Net:A Light-weight FFT Residual Net For Gaze Estimation

Gaze estimation is a crucial task in computer vision, however, existing methods suffer from high computational costs, which limit their practical deployment in resource-limited environments. In this paper, we propose a novel lightweight model, FR-Net, for accurate gaze angle estimation while significantly reducing computational complexity. FR-Net utilizes the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to extract gaze-relevant features in frequency domains while reducing the number of parameters. Additionally, we introduce a shortcut component that focuses on the spatial domain to further improve the accuracy of our model. Our experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves substantially lower gaze error angles (3.86 on MPII and 4.51 on EYEDIAP) compared to state-of-the-art gaze estimation methods, while utilizing 17 times fewer parameters (0.67M) and only 12\% of FLOPs (0.22B). Furthermore, our method outperforms existing lightweight methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency for the gaze estimation task. These results suggest that our proposed approach has significant potential applications in areas such as human-computer interaction and driver assistance systems.

Topologically Protected Edge States in Triangular Lattices

We describe the possibility for topologically robust edge states existing on interfaces of triangular lattices which are supported by rotational symmetries that are sensitive to boundary conditions. Such states are trivial from the perspective of Berry curvature, but result instead from an interplay between crystalline symmetries and finite boundary effects. Regardless, we show such states are in a distinct topological phase, provided the gauge-dependent symmetries are maintained. Such a model describes a number of recent bosonic experimental demonstrations on triangular lattices, the physics for which has thus far eluded explanation.

HGKT: Introducing Hierarchical Exercise Graph for Knowledge Tracing

Knowledge tracing (KT) which aims at predicting learner's knowledge mastery plays an important role in the computer-aided educational system. In recent years, many deep learning models have been applied to tackle the KT task, which have shown promising results. However, limitations still exist. Most existing methods simplify the exercising records as knowledge sequences, which fail to explore rich information that existed in exercises. Besides, the existing diagnosis results of knowledge tracing are not convincing enough since they neglect prior relations between exercises. To solve the above problems, we propose a hierarchical graph knowledge tracing model called HGKT to explore the latent hierarchical relations between exercises. Specifically, we introduce the concept of problem schema to construct a hierarchical exercise graph that could model the exercise learning dependencies. Moreover, we employ two attention mechanisms to highlight the important historical states of learners. In the testing stage, we present a K&S diagnosis matrix that could trace the transition of mastery of knowledge and problem schema, which can be more easily applied to different applications. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness and interpretability of our proposed models.

Stochastic Variational Methods in Generalized Hidden Semi-Markov Models to Characterize Functionality in Random Heteropolymers

Recent years have seen substantial advances in the development of biofunctional materials using synthetic polymers. The growing problem of elusive sequence-functionality relations for most biomaterials has driven researchers to seek more effective tools and analysis methods. In this study, statistical models are used to study sequence features of the recently reported random heteropolymers (RHP), which transport protons across lipid bilayers selectively and rapidly like natural proton channels. We utilized the probabilistic graphical model framework and developed a generalized hidden semi-Markov model (GHSMM-RHP) to extract the function-determining sequence features, including the transmembrane segments within a chain and the sequence heterogeneity among different chains. We developed stochastic variational methods for efficient inference on parameter estimation and predictions, and empirically studied their computational performance from a comparative perspective on Bayesian (i.e., stochastic variational Bayes) versus frequentist (i.e., stochastic variational expectation-maximization) frameworks that have been studied separately before. The real data results agree well with the laboratory experiments, and suggest GHSMM-RHP's potential in predicting protein-like behavior at the polymer-chain level.

Realization of broadband index-near-zero modes in nonreciprocal magneto-optical heterostructures

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterial with the relative permittivity approaching zero has been a hot research subject in the past decades. The wave in the ENZ region has infinite phase velocity ($v=1/\sqrt{\varepsilonμ}$), whereas it cannot efficiently travel into the other devices or air due to the impedance mismatch or near-zero group velocity. In this paper, we demonstrate that the tunable index-near-zero (INZ) modes with vanishing wavenumbers ($k=0$) and nonzero group velocities ($v_\mathrm{g} \neq 0$) can be achieved in nonreciprocal magneto-optical systems. This kind of INZ modes has been experimentally demonstrated in the photonic crystals at Dirac point frequencies and that impedance-matching effect has been observed as well. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the INZ modes exhibit tunability when changing the parameter of the one-way (nonreciprocal) waveguides. Moreover, owing to the zero-phase-shift characteristic and decreasing $v_\mathrm{g}$ of the INZ modes, several perfect optical buffers (POBs) are proposed in the microwave and terahertz regimes. The theoretical results are further verified by the numerical simulations performed by the finite element method. Our findings may open the new avenues for research in the areas of ultra -strong or -fast nonlinearity, perfect cloaking, high-resolution holographic imaging and wireless communications.

A review of knowledge graph application scenarios in cyber security

Facing the dynamic complex cyber environments, internal and external cyber threat intelligence, and the increasing risk of cyber-attack, knowledge graphs show great application potential in the cyber security area because of their capabilities in knowledge aggregation, representation, management, and reasoning. However, while most research has focused on how to develop a complete knowledge graph, it remains unclear how to apply the knowledge graph to solve industrial real challenges in cyber-attack and defense scenarios. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the basic concepts, schema, and construction approaches for the cyber security knowledge graph. To facilitate future research on cyber security knowledge graphs, we also present a curated collection of datasets and open-source libraries on the knowledge construction and information extraction task. In the major part of this article, we conduct a comparative review of the different works that elaborate on the recent progress in the application scenarios of the cyber security knowledge graph. Furthermore, a novel comprehensive classification framework is created to describe the connected works from nine primary categories and eighteen subcategories. Finally, we have a thorough outlook on several promising research directions based on the discussion of existing research flaws.

DAGAM: A Domain Adversarial Graph Attention Model for Subject Independent EEG-Based Emotion Recognition

One of the most significant challenges of EEG-based emotion recognition is the cross-subject EEG variations, leading to poor performance and generalizability. This paper proposes a novel EEG-based emotion recognition model called the domain adversarial graph attention model (DAGAM). The basic idea is to generate a graph to model multichannel EEG signals using biological topology. Graph theory can topologically describe and analyze relationships and mutual dependency between channels of EEG. Then, unlike other graph convolutional networks, self-attention pooling is applied to benefit salient EEG feature extraction from the graph, which effectively improves the performance. Finally, after graph pooling, the domain adversarial based on the graph is employed to identify and handle EEG variation across subjects, efficiently reaching good generalizability. We conduct extensive evaluations on two benchmark datasets (SEED and SEED IV) and obtain state-of-the-art results in subject-independent emotion recognition. Our model boosts the SEED accuracy to 92.59% (4.69% improvement) with the lowest standard deviation of 3.21% (2.92% decrements) and SEED IV accuracy to 80.74% (6.90% improvement) with the lowest standard deviation of 4.14% (3.88% decrements) respectively.

Rethinking Feature Uncertainty in Stochastic Neural Networks for Adversarial Robustness

It is well-known that deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown remarkable success in many fields. However, when adding an imperceptible magnitude perturbation on the model input, the model performance might get rapid decrease. To address this issue, a randomness technique has been proposed recently, named Stochastic Neural Networks (SNNs). Specifically, SNNs inject randomness into the model to defend against unseen attacks and improve the adversarial robustness. However, existed studies on SNNs mainly focus on injecting fixed or learnable noises to model weights/activations. In this paper, we find that the existed SNNs performances are largely bottlenecked by the feature representation ability. Surprisingly, simply maximizing the variance per dimension of the feature distribution leads to a considerable boost beyond all previous methods, which we named maximize feature distribution variance stochastic neural network (MFDV-SNN). Extensive experiments on well-known white- and black-box attacks show that MFDV-SNN achieves a significant improvement over existing methods, which indicates that it is a simple but effective method to improve model robustness.

On-chip unidirectional waveguiding for surface acoustic waves along a defect line in a triangular lattice

The latest advances in topological physics have yielded a rich toolset to design highly robust wave transfer systems, for overcoming issues like beam steering and lateral diffraction in surface acoustic waves (SAWs). However, presently used designs for topologically protected SAWs have been largely limited to spin or valley-polarized phases, which rely on non-zero Berry curvature effects. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a highly robust SAW waveguide on lithium niobate (LiNbO3), based on a line defect within a true triangular phononic lattice, which instead employs an intrinsic chirality of phase vortices and maintains a zero Berry curvature. The guided SAW mode spans a wide bandwidth and shows confinement in the lateral direction with 3 dB attenuation within half of the unit-cell length. SAW routing around sharp bends has been demonstrated in such waveguide, with less than ~4% reflection per bend. The waveguide has also been found robust for defect lines with different configurations. The fully on-chip system permits unidirectional SAW modes that are tightly bound to the waveguide, which provides a compact footprint ideal for miniaturization of practical applications and offers insight into the possibility of manipulating highly focused SAW propagation.

Micro/nanoliter droplet extraction by controlling acoustic vortex with miniwatt

Micro/nanoliter droplet is capable of achieving versatile applications with tiny volume and substantial surface energy, which is a big plus over bulk liquid. Yet, the contradiction of elaborate manipulation and enough power is still a challenge. Here, we unleash the potential of our miniwatt aspirators pumping up liquid and creating droplets with the help of acoustic vortex beams, inspired by the power mechanism that spirals are significant for most mollusks that live in water. These droplet aspirators produce very large interface deformations by small radiation pressures with orbit angular momentum from spiral-electrode transducers. The precisely contactless manipulation of physical, chemical and biological objects at micrometric down to nanometric scales, promises tremendous development in fields as diverse as microrobotics, nanoreactors, or nanoassemblies.

Photonic topological insulators a beginner's introduction

Control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves has reached a new level with the recent understanding of topological states of matter. These metamaterials have the potential to revolutionize many areas in traditional electromagnetic design, from highly robust cavities to small footprint waveguides. Much of the past literature has been on the cutting edge of condensed matter physics, but there is now ample opportunity to explore their usage for practical microwave and optical devices. To assist the beginner, in this Tutorial we give a basic introduction to the essential concepts of topological phenomena in electromagnetic systems, including geometric phases, topological invariants, pseudospin states, and the integer/valley/spin quantum Hall effects. Our focus is on engineered photonic topological insulators (PTIs) in two-dimensional systems. We highlight methods for characterizing such structures and how they result in unique wave-guiding properties. In addition, we provide recipes on how to realize PTIs using photonic crystals and metasurfaces, examine differences between different types of PTIs, and discuss limitations and advantages of some of the existing enabling platforms.

Slow wave and truly rainbow trapping in one-way terahertz waveguide

Slow or even stop electromagnetic (EM) waves attract researchers' attentions for its potential applications in energy storage, optical buffer and nonlinearity enhancement. However, in most cases of the EM waves trapping, the EM waves are not truly trapped due to the existence of reflection. In this paper, a novel metal-semiconductor-semiconductor-metal (MSSM) structure, and a novel truly rainbow trapping in a tapered MSSM model at terahertz frequencies are demonstrated by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. More importantly, functional devices such as optical buffer, optical switch and optical filter are achieved in our designed MSSM structure based on truly rainbow trapping theory. Owing to the property of one-way propagation, these new types of optical devices can be high-performance and are expected to be used in integrated optical circuits.

Confining and channeling sound through coupled resonators

Confining sound is of significant importance for the manipulation and routing acoustic waves. We propose a Helmholtz resonator (HR) based subwavelength sound channel formed at the interface of two metamaterials, for this purpose. The confinement is quantified through (i) a substantial reduction of the pressure, and (ii) an increase in a specific acoustic impedance (defined by the ratio of the local pressure to the sound velocity) - to a very large value outside the channel. The sound confinement is robust to frequency as well as spatial disorder at the interface, as long as the interface related edge mode is situated within the band gap. A closed acoustic circuit was formed by introducing controlled disorder in the HR units at the corners, indicating the possibility of confining sound to a point.
