Observation of topological Phenomena in a Weyl Exceptional Ring with Single Photons

Compared with Hermitian theory, non-Hermitian physics offers a fundamentally different mathematical framework, enabling the observation of topological phenomena that have no analogue in Hermitian systems. Among these, the exceptional point (EP) ring stands out as a quintessential topological feature unique to non-Hermitian systems. In this study, we employ single-photon interferometry to overcome the experimental challenge of precise phase control in quantum systems, thereby enabling a complete simulation of the non-Hermitian EP ring in three-dimensional parameter space without invoking any additional symmetry assumptions. By measuring the non-Hermitian dynamics in three-dimensional parameter space, we determine the system's eigenstates, which allows us to characterize the topological band structure of the system under different conditions. We describe the topological properties of the EP ring by extracting the Chern number and Berry phase for different parameter manifolds and observe the topological critical phenomena of the system. Our work paves the way for further exploration of topological non-Hermitian systems.

Mechanical cooling in the bistable regime of a dissipative optomechanical cavity with a Kerr medium

In this paper, we study static bistability and mechanical cooling of a dissipative optomechanical cavity filled with a Kerr medium. The system exhibits optical bistability for a wide input-power range with the power threshold being greatly reduced, in contrast to the case of purely dissipative coupling. At the bistable regime, the membrane can be effectively cooled down to a few millikelvin from the room temperature under the unresolved sideband condition, where the effective mechanical temperature is a nonmonotonic function of intracavity intensity and reaches its minimum near the turning point of the upper stable branch. When the system is in the cryogenics environment, the effective mechanical temperature at the bistable regime shows a similar feature as in the room temperature case, but the optimal cooling appears at the monostable regime and approaches the mechanical ground state. Our results are of interest for further understanding bistable optomechanical systems, which have many applications in nonclassical state preparations and quantum information processing.

High efficiency SHG of orbital angular momentum light in an external cavity

Traditional methods for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) light include holographic diffraction gratings, vortex phase plate and spatial light modulator. In this article, we report a new method for high efficient OAM light generation. By pumping an external cavity contains a quasi phase matching nonlinear crystal with a fundamental OAM carrying light and properly aligning the cavity, mode matching between the pump light and the cavitys higher order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode is achieved, conversion efficiency up to 10.3 percentage have been obtained. We have demonstrated that the cavity can stably operate at its higher order LG mode just as Gaussian mode for the first time. The SHG light possesses a doubled OAM value with respect to the pump light. The parameters that affect the beam quality and conversion efficiency are discussed in detail. Our work opens a brand new field in laser optics, and makes the first step toward high efficiency OAM light processing.

Generation of light with controllable spatial patterns via the sum frequency in quasi-phase matching crystals

Light beams with extraordinary spatial structures, such as the Airy beam (AB), the Bessel-Gaussian beam (BGB) and the Laguerre-Gaussian beam (LGB), are widely studied and applied in many optical scenarios. We report on preparation of light beams with controllable spatial structures through sum frequency generation (SFG) using two Gaussian pump beams in a quasi-phase matching (QPM) crystal. The spatial structures, including multi-ring-like BGB, donut-like LGB, and super-Gaussian-like beams, can be controlled periodically via crystal phase mismatching by tuning the pump frequency or crystal temperature. This phenomenon has not been reported or discussed previously. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree very well with the experimental observations. Our findings give further insight into the SFG process in QPM crystals, provide a new way to generate light with unusual spatial structures, and may find applications in the fields of laser optics, all-optical switching, and optical manipulation and trapping.

Indirect precise angular control using four-wave mixing

Here we show indirect precise angular control using a four-wave mixing (FWM) process. This was performed with a superposition of light with orbital angular momentum (OAM) in an M-Type configuration of a hot 85Rb atomic ensemble. A gear-shaped interference pattern is observed at FWM light with a donut-shaped input signal. The gear could be rotated and is controlled through the change of the polarization of the pump laser. Our experimental results that are based on nonlinear coherent interactions have applications in image processing and precise angular control.

Orbital angular momentum light frequency conversion and interference with quasi-phase matching crystals

Light with helical phase structures, carrying quantized orbital angular momentum (OAM), has many applications in both classical and quantum optics, such as high-capacity optical communications and quantum information processing. Frequency conversion is a basic technique to expand the frequency range of fundamental light. The frequency conversion of OAM-carrying light gives rise to new physics and applications such as up-conversion detection of images and high dimensional OAM entanglements. Quasi-phase matching (QPM) nonlinear crystals are good candidates for frequency conversion, particularly for their high-valued effective nonlinear coefficients and no walk-off effect. Here we report the first experimental second-harmonic generation (SHG) of OAM light with a QPM crystal, where a UV light with OAM of 100 is generated. OAM conservation is verified using a specially designed interferometer. With a pump beam carrying an OAM superposition of opposite sign, we observed interesting interference phenomena in the SHG light; specifically, a photonics gear-like structure is obtained that gives direct evidence of OAM conservation, which will be very useful for ultra-sensitive angular measurements. We also develop a theory to reveal the underlying physics of the phenomena. The methods and theoretical analysis shown here are also applicable to other frequency conversion processes, such as sum frequency generation and difference-frequency generation, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.

An optical fan for light beams for high-precision optical measurements and optical switching

The polarization and orbital angular momentum properties of light are of great importance in optical science and technology in the fields of high precision optical measurements and high capacity and high speed optical communications. Here we show, a totally new method, based on a combination of these two properties and using the thermal dispersion and electro-optical effect of birefringent crystals, the construction of a simple and robust scheme to rotate a light beam like a fan. Using a computer-based digital image processing technique, we determine the temperature and the thermal dispersion difference of the crystal with high resolution. We also use the rotation phenomenon to realize thermo-optic and electro-optic switches. The basic operating principles for measurement and switching processes are presented in detail. The methods developed here will have wide practical applicability in various fields, including remote sensing, materials science and optical communication networks.

Quantum Storage of Orbital Angular Momentum Entanglement in an Atomic Ensemble

Constructing a quantum memory for a photonic entanglement is vital for realizing quantum communication and network. Besides enabling the realization of high channel capacity communication, entangled photons of high-dimensional space are of great interest because of many extended applications in quantum information and fundamental physics fields. Photons entangled in a two-dimensional space had been stored in different system, but there have been no any report on the storage of a photon pair entangled in a high-dimensional space. Here, we report the first experimental realization of storing an entangled orbital angular momentum (OAM) state through a far off-resonant two-photon transition (FORTPT) in a cold atomic ensemble. We reconstruct the matrix density of an OAM entangled state postselected in a two-dimensional subspace with a fidelity of 90.3%+/-0.8% and obtain the Clauser, Horne and Shimony and Holt inequality parameter S of 2.41+/-0.06 after a programmed storage time. All results clearly show the preservation of entanglement during the storage. Besides, we also realize the storage of a true-single-photon via FORTPT for the first time.

Actively switchable non-degenerate polarization entangled photon pair distribution in a dense wave-division multiplexing

We have realized experimentally a non-degenerate polarization-entangled photon pair distribution in a commercial telecom dense wave-division multiplexing device (DWDM) with 8 channels. A promising point of this work is that the entangled photon pair is obtained via spontaneously parametric down conversion in a single type-II periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal without usual post-selection. Another promising advantage is that we can actively control and switch the distribution of the photon pair between different channel pairs in DWDM at will. There is no crosstalk between the different channel pair because of a limited emission bandwidth of the source. High raw visibility of greater than 90% in Bell-type interference measurement in each channel pair and the CHSH inequality S parameter of 2.63+/-0.08 prove high entanglement of our source. Our work is helpful for building quantum communication networks.

Ultra-broadband continuously-tunable polarization entangled photon pair source covering the C+L telecom bands based on a single type-II PPKTP crystal

In this work, we report on the preparation of an ultra-broadband continuously-tunable, highly polarization-entangled photon-pair source covering the C+L telecom bands using a single type-II phase-matched bulk PPKTP crystal. Over 60 nm turning band of the down-converted photons is achieved experimentally. The broad tuning ability is due to operating near an extended phase match point in this crystal. The S parameter value of CHSH inequality is in the range between 2.60+/-0.04 (minimum) and 2.72+/-0.07 (maximum), which clearly demonstrates the high entanglement of the source over the whole tunable range. This is the first realization of such a broadband tunable degenerate polarization entanglement pair source in the telecom band. Combined with dense wavelength-division multiplexing technique, our source could be used to improve the transmission capacity of a single communication channel in the field of quantum communication.

Experimental demonstration of quantum leader election in linear optics

Linear optics is a promising candidate to enable the construction of quantum computers. A number of quantum protocols gates based on linear optics have been demonstrated. However, it is well-known that these gates are non-deterministic and that higher order nonlinearity is necessary for deterministic operations. We found the quantum leader election protocol (QLE) can be operated deterministically only with linear optics, and we have demonstrated the nearly deterministic operation which overcomes classical limit.

Hypothesis testing for an entangled state produced by spontaneous parametric down conversion

Generation and characterization of entanglement are crucial tasks in quantum information processing. A hypothesis testing scheme for entanglement has been formulated. Three designs were proposed to test the entangled photon states created by the spontaneous parametric down conversion. The time allocations between the measurement vectors were designed to consider the anisotropic deviation of the generated photon states from the maximally entangled states. The designs were evaluated in terms of the p-value based on the observed data. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the optimal time allocation between the coincidence and anti-coincidence measurement vectors improves the entanglement test. A further improvement is also experimentally demonstrated by optimizing the time allocation between the anti-coincidence vectors. Analysis on the data obtained in the experiment verified the advantage of the entanglement test designed by the optimal time allocation.

Optical realization of universal quantum cloning

Beyond the no-cloning theorem, the universal symmetric quantum cloning machine was first addressed by Buzek and Hillery. Here, we realized the one-to-two qubits Buzek-Hillery cloning machine with linear optical devices. This method relies on the representation of several qubits by a single photon. We showed that, the fidelities between the two output qubits and the original qubit are both 5/6 (which proved to be the optimal fidelity of one-to-two qubits universal cloner) for arbitrary input pure states.

Optimal entanglement purifying via entanglement swapping

It is known that entanglement swapping can be used to realize entanglement purifying. By this way, two particles belong to different non-maximally entangled pairs can be projected probabilisticly to a maximally entangled state or to a less entangled state. In this report, we show, when the less entangled state is obtained, if a unitary transformation is introduced locally, then a maximally entangled state can be obtained probabilisticly from this less entangled state. The total successful probability of our scheme is equal to the entanglement of a single pairpurification (if two original pairs are in the same non-maximally entangled states) or to the smaller entanglement of a single pair purification of these two pairs (if two original pairs are not in the same non-maximally entangled states). The advantage of our scheme is no continuous indefinite iterative procedure is needed to achieve optimal purifying.

Manipulating the frequency entangled states by acoustic-optical-modulator

In this paper, we describe how to realize conditional frequency entanglement swapping and to produce probabilisticly a three-photon frequency entangled state from two pairs of frequency entangled states by using an Acoustic-Optical-Modulator. Both schemes are very simple and may be implementable in practice.
