Implications on the origin of cosmic rays in light of 10 TV spectral softenings

Precise measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic rays (CRs) show various kinds of features deviating from single power-laws, which give very interesting and important implications on their origin and propagation. Previous measurements from a few balloon and space experiments indicate the existence of spectral softenings around 10 TV for protons (and probably also for Helium nuclei). Very recently, the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) measurement about the proton spectrum clearly reveals such a softening with a high significance. Here we study the implications of these new measurements, as well as the groundbased indirect measurements, on the origin of CRs. We find that a single component of CRs fails to fit the spectral softening and the air shower experiment data simultaneously. In the framework of multiple components, we discuss two possible scenarios, the multiple source population scenario and the background plus nearby source scenario. Both scenarios give reasonable fits to the wide-band data from TeV to 100 PeV energies. Considering the anisotropy observations, the nearby source model is favored.

Hyperbolic field space and swampland conjecture for DBI scalar

We study a model of two scalar fields with a hyperbolic field space and show that it reduces to a single-field Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) model in the limit where the field space becomes infinitely curved. We apply the de Sitter swampland conjecture to the two-field model and take the same limit. It is shown that in the limit, all quantities appearing in the swampland conjecture remain well-defined within the single-field DBI model. Based on a consistency argument, we then speculate that the condition derived in this way can be considered as the de Sitter swampland conjecture for a DBI scalar field by its own. The condition differs from those proposed in the literature and only the one in the present paper passes the consistency argument. As a byproduct, we also point out that one of the inequalities in the swampland conjecture for a multi-field model with linear kinetic terms should involve the lowest mass squared for scalar perturbations and that this quantity can be significantly different from the lowest eigenvalue of the Hessian of the potential in the local orthonormal frame if the field space is highly curved. Finally, we propose an extension of the de Sitter swampland conjecture to a more general scalar field with the Lagrangian of the form $P(X,φ)$, where $X=-(\partialφ)^2/2$.

Bell Inequality in the Holographic EPR Pair

We study the Bell inequality in a holographic model of the casually disconnected Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pair. The Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt(CHSH) form of Bell inequality is constructed using holographic Schwinger-Keldysh (SK) correlators. We show that the manifestation of quantum correlation in Bell inequality can be holographically reproduced from the classical fluctuations of dual accelerating string in the bulk gravity. The violation of this holographic Bell inequality supports the essential quantum property of this holographic model of an EPR pair.

Towards Searching for Entangled Photons in the CMB Sky

We explore the possibility of detecting entangled photon pairs from cosmic microwave background or other cosmological sources coming from two patches of the sky. The measurements use two detectors with different photon polarizer directions. When two photon sources are separated by a large angle relative to the earth, such that each detector has only one photon source in its field of view, a null test of unentangled photons can be performed. The deviation from this unentangled background is, in principle, the signature of photon entanglement. To confirm whether the deviation is consistent with entangled photons, we derive a photon polarization correlation to compare with, similar to that in a Bell inequality measurement. However, since photon coincidence measurement cannot be used to discriminate unentangled cosmic photons, it is unlikely that the correlation expectation value alone can violate Bell inequality to provide the signature for entanglement.

Holographic Approach to Entanglement Entropy in Disordered Systems

We investigate the entanglement entropy of a two-dimensional disordered system holographically. In particular, we study the evolution of the entanglement entropy along renormalization group flows for a conformal theory at the UV fixed point, that is perturbed by weak disorder into a Lifshitz theory at the IR fixed point. Through numerical fitting, we find that the disorder correlations leads to a sub-leading power-law term in the entanglement entropy that vanishes at the IR fixed point. Interestingly, the exponent that controls the power-law vanishing of the sub-leading term seems to be almost universal as it depends very weakly on the strength of the disorder. We show that our results can be put in the context of the c-theorem by defining an effective central charge that decreases along the RG flow. We also investigate disorder induced long-range correlations between the two subsystems by studying the holographic mutual information.

Emergent Dark Universe and the Swampland Criteria

We study a model of the emergent dark universe, which lives on the time-like hypersurface in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime. The holographic fluid on the hypersurface is assumed to play the role of the dark sector, mainly including the dark energy and apparent dark matter. Based on the modified Friedmann equations, we present a Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo analysis with the observational data, including type Ia Supernova and the direct measurement of the Hubble constant. We obtain a good fitting result and the matter component turns out to be small enough, which matches well with our theoretical assumption that only the normal matter is required. After considering the fitting parameters, an effective potential of the model with a dynamical scalar field is reconstructed. The parameters in the swampland criteria are extracted, and they satisfy the criteria at the present epoch but are in tension with the criteria if the potential is extended to the future direction. The method to reconstruct the potential is helpful to study the swampland criteria of other models without an explicit scalar field.

Emergent Dark Matter in Late Time Universe on Holographic Screen

We discuss a scenario that the dark matter in late time universe emerges as part of the holographic stress-energy tensor on the hypersurface in higher dimensional flat spacetime. Firstly we construct a toy model with a de Sitter hypersurface as the holographic screen in the flat bulk. After adding the baryonic matter on the screen, we assume that both of the dark matter and dark energy can be described by the Brown-York stress-energy tensor. From the Hamiltonian constraint equation in the flat bulk, we find an interesting relation between the dark matter and baryonic matter's energy density parameters, by comparing with the Lambda cold dark matter parameterization. We further compare this holographic embedding of emergent dark matter with traditional braneworld scenario and present an alternative interpretation as the holographic universe. It can be reduced to our toy constraint in the late time universe, with the new parameterization of the Friedmann equation. We also comment on the possible connection with Verlinde's emergent gravity, where the dark matter is treated as the elastic response of the baryonic matter on the de Sitter spacetime background. We show that from the holographic de Sitter model with elasticity, the Tully-Fisher relation and the dark matter distribution in the galaxy scale can be derived.

Calibration of the DAMPE Plastic Scintillator Detector and its on-orbit performance

DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne apparatus for detecting the high-energy cosmic-rays like electrons, $γ$-rays, protons and heavy-ions. Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is the top-most sub-detector of the DAMPE. The PSD is designed to measure the charge of incident high-energy particles and it also serves as a veto detector for discriminating $γ$-rays from charged particles. In this paper, PSD on-orbit calibration procedure is described, which includes five steps of pedestal, dynode correlation, response to minimum-ionizing particles (MIPs), light attenuation function and energy reconstruction. A method for reconstructing the charge of incident high energy cosmic-ray particles is introduced. The detection efficiency of each PSD strip is verified to be above 99.5%, the total efficiency of the PSD for charged particles is above 99.99%.

Holographic Charged Fluid with Chiral Electric Separation Effect

Hydrodynamics with both vector and axial currents is under study within a holographic model, consisting of canonical $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ gauge fields in an asymptotically AdS$_5$ black brane. When gravitational back-reaction is taken into account, the chiral electric separation effect (CESE), namely the generation of an axial current as the response to an external electric field, is realized naturally. Via fluid/gravity correspondence, all the first order transport coefficients in the hydrodynamic constitutive relations are evaluated analytically: they are functions of vector chemical potential $μ$, axial chemical potential $μ_5$ and the fluid's temperature $T$. Apart from the proportionality factor $μμ_5$, the CESE conductivity is found to be dependent on the dimensionless quantities $μ/T$ and $μ_5/T$ nontrivially. As a complementary study, frequency-dependent transport phenomena are revealed through linear response analysis, demonstrating perfect agreement with the results obtained from fluid/gravity correspondence.

From nonholonomic quantum constraint to canonical variables of photons I: true intrinsic degree of freedom

We report that the true intrinsic degree of freedom of the photon is neither the polarization nor the spin. It describes a local property in momentum space and is represented in the local representation by the Pauli matrices. This result is achieved by treating the transversality condition on the vector wavefunction as a nonholonomic quantum constraint. We find that the quantum constraint makes it possible to generalize the Stokes parameters to characterize the polarization of a general state. Unexpectedly, the generalized Stokes parameters are specified in a momentum-space local reference system that is fixed by another degree of freedom, called Stratton vector. Only constant Stokes parameters in one particular local reference system can convey the intrinsic degree of freedom of the photon. We show that the optical rotation is one of such processes that change the Stratton vector with the intrinsic quantum number remaining fixed. Changing the Stratton vector of the eigenstate of the helicity will give rise to a Berry's phase.

Rindler Fluid with Weak Momentum Relaxation

We realize the weak momentum relaxation in Rindler fluid, which lives on the time-like cutoff surface in an accelerating frame of flat spacetime. The translational invariance is broken by massless scalar fields with weak strength. Both of the Ward identity and the momentum relaxation rate of Rindler fluid are obtained, with higher order correction in terms of the strength of momentum relaxation. The Rindler fluid with momentum relaxation could also be approached through the near horizon limit of cutoff AdS fluid with momentum relaxation, which lives on a finite time-like cutoff surface in Anti-de Sitter(AdS) spacetime, and further could be connected with the holographic conformal fluid living on AdS boundary at infinity. Thus, in the holographic Wilson renormalization group flow of the fluid/gravity correspondence with momentum relaxation, the Rindler fluid can be considered as the Infrared Radiation(IR) fixed point, and the holographic conformal fluid plays the role of the ultraviolet(UV) fixed point.

Interpretations of the DAMPE electron data

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a high energy cosmic ray and $γ$-ray detector in space, has recently reported the new measurement of the total electron plus positron flux between 25 GeV and 4.6 TeV. A spectral softening at $\sim0.9$ TeV and a tentative peak at $\sim1.4$ TeV have been reported. We study the physical implications of the DAMPE data in this work. The presence of the spectral break significantly tightens the constraints on the model parameters to explain the electron/positron excesses. The spectral softening can either be explained by the maximum acceleration limits of electrons by astrophysical sources, or a breakdown of the common assumption of continuous distribution of electron sources at TeV energies in space and time. The tentive peak at $\sim1.4$ TeV implies local sources of electrons/positrons with quasi-monochromatic injection spectrum. We find that the cold, ultra-relativistic $e^+e^-$ winds from pulsars may give rise to such a structure. The pulsar is requird to be middle-aged, relatively slowly-rotated, mildly magnetized, and isolated in a density cavity. The annihilation of DM particles ($m_χ\sim1.5$ TeV) into $e^+e^-$ pairs in a nearby clump or an over-density region may also explain the data. In the DM scenario, the inferred clump mass (or density enhancement) is about $10^7-10^8$ M$_\odot$ (or $17-35$ times of the canonical local density) assuming a thermal production cross section, which is relatively extreme compared with the expectation from numerical simulations. A moderate enhancement of the annihilation cross section via, e.g., the Sommerfeld mechanism or non-thermal production, is thus needed.

The String Worldsheet as the Holographic Dual of SYK State

Recent studies of the fluctuations of an open string in AdS space show some pieces of evidence that the string with a worldsheet horizon could be a dual description of SYK model, as they saturate universal chaos bound and share the same symmetry. An open string hangs from the AdS boundary to the horizon of black brane could be dual to a 0+1 dimensional boundary state. To be specific, we find that the fluctuation of the string in charged BTZ black hole has an asymptotic scaling symmetry, and its Euclidean IR fixed point is governed by the quadratic order of Schwarzian action, which is just the low energy effective theory of the SYK model. Considering the open string worldsheet also has natural reparametrization symmetry, we conjecture that the action of the string worldsheet is a dual description of SYK state.

Anisotropic Dyonic Black Brane and its Effects on Hydrodynamics

We construct $SL(2,R)$ invariant in anisotropic medium, with a dual anisotropic charged black hole geometry in massive gravity. We show how to obtain $SL(2,R)$ elements in terms of new degrees of freedom for Electromagnetic configuration, and construct the general expressions for conductivity with $SL(2,R)$ invariant. The holographic conductivities can be calculated using horizon data in an external magnetic field, and we show the numerical results using the linear response theory.

Horizon supertranslation and degenerate black hole solutions

In this note we first review the degenerate vacua arising from the BMS symmetries. According to the discussion in [1] one can define BMS-analogous supertranslation and superrotation for spacetime with black hole in Gaussian null coordinates. In the leading and subleading orders of near horizon approximation, the infinitely degenerate black hole solutions are derived by considering Einstein equations with or without cosmological constant, and they are related to each other by the diffeomorphism generated by horizon supertranslation. Higher order results and degenerate Rindler horizon solutions also are given in appendices.

Engineering Holographic Superconductor Phase Diagrams

We study how to engineer holographic models with features of a high temperature superconductor phase diagram. We introduce a field in the bulk which provides a tunable "doping" parameter in the boundary theory. By designing how this field changes the effective masses of other order parameter fields, desired phase diagrams can be engineered. We give examples of generating phase diagrams with phase boundaries similar to a superconducting dome and an anti-ferromagnetic phase by including two order parameter fields. We also explore whether the pseudo gap phase can be described without adding another order parameter field and discuss the potential scaling symmetry associated with a quantum critical point hidden under the superconducting dome in this phase diagram.

Topological Non-Fermi Liquid

In this paper we investigate the $(2+1)$-dimensional topological non-Fermi liquid in strongly correlated electron system, which has a holographic dual description by Einstein gravity in $(3+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. In a dyonic Reissner-Nordstrom black hole background, we consider a Dirac fermion coupled to the background $U(1)$ gauge theory and an intrinsic chiral gauge field $b_M$ induced by chiral anomaly. UV retarded Green's function of the charged fermion in the UV boundary from AdS$_4$ gravity is calculated, by imposing in-falling wave condition at the horizon. We also obtain IR correlation function of the charged fermion at the IR boundary arising from the near horizon geometry of the topological black hole with index $k=0,\pm 1$. By using the UV retarded Green's function and IR correlation function, we analyze the low frequency behavior of the topological non-Fermi liquid at zero and finite temperatures, especially the relevant non-Fermi liquid behavior near the quantum critical region. In addition, we find that when $k=\pm 1$, the effective mass of bulk Dirac fermion at IR fixed point is topologically quantized, consequently the Fermi momentum presents a discrete sparse distributed pattern, in contrary to the Ricci flat case with $k=0$. As demonstrated examples, we calculate the spectral functions of topological non-Fermi liquid due to anomalous Hall effect (AHE) ($|\vec{b}|\ne 0, b_0=0$) and chiral magnetic effect (CME) ($|\vec{b}| = 0, b_0\ne 0$), which can be tested in topological materials such as topological insulator and topological metal with strong couplings.

Topolgical Charged Black Holes in Generalized Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

As a candidate of quantum gravity in ultrahigh energy, the $(3+1)$-dimensional Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity with critical exponent $z\ne 1$, indicates anisotropy between time and space at short distance. In the paper, we investigate the most general $z=d$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in arbitrary spatial dimension $d$, with a generic dynamical Ricci flow parameter $λ$ and a detailed balance violation parameter $ε$. In arbitrary dimensional generalized HL$_{d+1}$ gravity with $z\ge d$ at long distance, we study the topological neutral black hole solutions with general $λ$ in $z=d$ HL$_{d+1}$, as well as the topological charged black holes with $λ=1$ in $z=d$ HL$_{d+1}$. The HL gravity in the Lagrangian formulation is adopted, while in the Hamiltonian formulation, it reduces to Dirac$-$De Witt's canonical gravity with $λ=1$. In particular, the topological charged black holes in $z=5$ HL$_6$, $z=4$ HL$_5$, $z=3,4$ HL$_4$ and $z=2$ HL$_3$ with $λ=1$ are solved. Their asymptotical behaviors near the infinite boundary and near the horizon are explored respectively. We also study the behavior of the topological black holes in the $(d+1)$-dimensional HL gravity with $U(1)$ gauge field in the zero temperature limit and finite temperature limit, respectively. Thermodynamics of the topological charged black holes with $λ=1$, including temperature, entropy, heat capacity, and free energy are evaluated.
