Collective excitation of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the collective excitations of a Raman-induced spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a quasi one-dimension harmonic trap using the Bogoliubov method. By tuning the Raman coupling strength, three phases of the system can be identified. By calculating the transition strength, we are able to classify various excitation modes that are experimentally relevant. We show that the three quantum phases possess distinct features in their collective excitation properties. In particular, the spin dipole and the spin breathing modes can be used to clearly map out the phase boundaries. We confirm these predictions by direct numerical simulations of the quench dynamics that excites the relevant collective modes.

Spectroscopy and spin dynamics for strongly interacting few spinor bosons in one-dimensional traps

We consider a one-dimensional trapped gas of strongly interacting few spin-1 atoms which can be described by an effective spin chain Hamiltonian. Away from the SU(3) integrable point, where the energy spectrum is highly degenerate, the rules of ordering and crossing of the energy levels and the symmetry of the eigenstates in the regime of large but finite repulsion have been elucidated. We study the spin-mixing dynamics which is shown to be very sensitive to the ratio between the two channel interactions g0/g2 and the effective spin chain transfers the quantum states more perfectly than the Heisenberg bilinear-biquadratic spin chain.

Quantum walks in commensurate off-diagonal Aubry-André-Harper model

Due to the topological nature of Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model, exotic edge states have been found existing in one-dimensional periodic and quasiperiodic lattices. In this article, we investigate continuous-time quantum walks of identical particles initially located on either edge of commensurate AAH lattices in detail. It is shown that the quantum walker is delocalized among the whole lattice until the strength of periodic modulation is strong enough. The inverse participation ratios (IPRs) for all of the eigenstates are calculated. It is found that the localization properties of the quantum walker is mainly determined by the IPRs of the topologically protected edge states. More interestingly, the edge states are shown to have an exotic `\emph{repulsion}' effect on quantum walkers initiated from the lattice sites inside the bulk. Furthermore, we examine the role of nearest-neighbour interaction on the quantum walks of two identical fermions. Clear enhancement of the `\emph{repulsion}' effect by strong interaction has been shown.

Dynamics of a coupled spin vortex pair in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

The collisional and magnetic field quench dynamics of a coupled spin-vortex pair in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in a double well potential are numerically investigated in the mean field theory. Upon a sudden release of the potential barrier the two layers of condensates collide with each other in the trap center with the chirality of the vortex pair exchanged after each collision, showing the typical signature of in-phase collision for the parallel spin vortex phase, and out-of-phase collision for the antiparallel phase. When quenching the transverse magnetic field, the vortex center in the single-layered condensate starts to make a helical motion with oval-shaped trajectories and the displacement of the center position is found to exhibit a damped simple harmonic oscillation with an intrinsic frequency and damping rate. The oscillation mode of the spin vortex pair may be tuned by the initial magnetic field and the height of the Gaussian barrier, e.g. the gyrotropic motions for parallel spin vortex pair are out of sync with each other in the two layers, while those for the antiparallel pair exhibit a double-helix-structure with the vortex centers moving opposite to each other with the same amplitude.

Quantum walks accompanied by spin flipping in one-dimensional optical lattices

We investigate continuous-time quantum walks of two fermionic atoms loaded in one-dimensional optical lattices with on-site interaction and subjected to a Zeeman field. The quantum walks are accompanied by spin-flipping processes. We calculate the time-dependent density distributions of the two fermions with opposite spins which are initially positioned on the center site by means of exact numerical method. Besides the usual fast linear expansion behavior, we find an interesting spin-flipping induced localization in the time-evolution of density distributions. We show that the fast linear expansion behavior could be restored by simply ramping on the Zeeman field or further increasing the spin-flipping strength. The intrinsic origin of this exotic phenomenon is attributed to the emergence of a flat band in the single particle spectrum of the system. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of on-site interaction on the dynamics of the quantum walkers. The two-particle correlations are calculated and signal of localization is also shown therein. A simple potential experimental application of this interesting phenomenon is proposed.

Beats, broken-symmetry superfluid on a one dimensional anyon Hubbard model

By using the density matrix renormalization group and mean field methods, the anyon Hubbard model is studied systematically on a one dimensional lattice. The model can be expressed as a Bose-Hubbard model with a density-dependent-phase term. When the phase angle is $θ=0$ or $θ=π$, the model will be equivalent to boson and pseudo fermion models, respectively. In the mean field frame, we find a broken-symmetry superfluid (BSF), in which the $b^{\dagger}(b)$ operators on the nearest neighborhood sites have exactly opposite directions and behave like a directed oscillation pattern. By the density matrix reorganization group method, in the broken-symmetry superfluid, both the real and imaginary parts of the correlation $b^{\dagger}_ib_{i+r}$ behave according to a {\it beat phenomenon} with $0<θ<π$ in the form $C_0e^{i k r}(-1)^{r}$ or behave like waves with different wavelengths in the form $C_0e^{i k r}$. The distributions of the broken-symmetry superfluid phase and other phases are shown in the phase diagrams with different values of $θ$ and the direct phase transition between the two types of superfluid is observed. The beats phenomenon is explained by double peaks of momentum distribution with two wave numbers ${k}_1$ and ${k}_2$ satisfying the condition $\frac{{k}_1-{k}_2}{{k}_1+{k}_2}<\frac{1}{3}$, which are expected to be observed in the optical experiments.

Geometric Curvature and Phase of the Rabi model

We study the geometric curvature and phase of the Rabi model. Under the rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we apply the gauge independent Berry curvature over a surface integral to calculate the Berry phase of the eigenstates for both single and two-qubit systems, which is found to be identical with the system of spin-1/2 particle in a magnetic field. We extend the idea to define a vacuum-induced geometric curvature when the system starts from an initial state with pure vacuum bosonic field. The induced geometric phase is related to the average photon number in a period which is possible to measure in the qubit-cavity system. We also calculate the geometric phase beyond the RWA and find an anomalous sudden change, which implies the breakdown of the adiabatic theorem and the Berry phases in an adiabatic cyclic evolution are ill-defined near the anti-crossing point in the spectrum.

Magnetic and nematic phases in a Weyl type spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose gas

We present a variational study of the spin-1 Bose gases in a harmonic trap with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling of Weyl type. For weak spin-orbit coupling, we treat the single-particle ground states as the form of perturbational harmonic oscillator states in the lowest total angular momentum manifold with $j=1, m_j=1,0,-1$. When the two-body interaction is considered, we set the trail order parameter as the superposition of three degenerate single-particle ground-states and the weight coefficients are determined by minimizing the energy functional. Two ground state phases, namely the magnetic and the nematic phases, are identified depending on the spin-independent and the spin-dependent interactions. Unlike the non-spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate for which the phase boundary between the magnetic and the nematic phase lies exactly at zero spin-dependent interaction, the boundary is modified by the spin-orbit-coupling. We find the magnetic phase is featured with phase-separated density distributions, 3D skyrmion-like spin textures and competing magnetic and biaxial nematic orders, while the nematic phase is featured with miscible density distributions, zero magnetization and spatially modulated uniaxial nematic order. The emergence of higher spin order creates new opportunities for exploring spin-tensor-related physics in spin-orbit coupled superfluid.

Coupled spin-vortex pair in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the ground-state and magnetic properties of a dipolar spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a symmetric double-well potential. In particular, we focus on the spin-vortex states by assuming that each potential well is highly pancake shaped. We show that the presence of the double-well potential gives rise to two different spin configurations for the spin-vortex pair states. We also study the response of the coupled spin-vortex pair to static transverse magnetic fields.

Entanglement dynamics of the ultra-strong coupling three-qubit Dicke model

We give an analytical description of the dynamics of the three-qubit Dicke model using the adiabatic approximation in the parameter regime where the qubits transition frequencies are far off-resonance with the field frequency and the interaction strengths reach the ultra-strong coupling regimes. Qualitative differences arise when comparing to the single- and two-qubit systems - simple analytic formulas show that three revival sequences produce a three-frequency beat note in the time evolution of the population. We find an explicit way to estimate the dynamics for the qubit-field and qubit-qubit entanglement inside the three-qubit system in the ultra strong coupling regime, and the resistance to the sudden death proves the robustness of the GHZ state.

Spin-orbit-angular-momentum coupling in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a simple model with spin and orbit angular momentum coupling in a spin-1 Bose- Einstein condensate, where three internal atomic states are Raman coupled by a pair of co- propagating Laguerre-Gaussian beams. The resulting Raman transition imposes a transfer of orbital angular momentum between photons and the condensate in a spin-dependent way. Focusing on a regime where the single-particle ground state is nearly three-fold degenerate, we show that the weak interatomic interaction in the condensate produces a rich phase diagram, and that a many-body Rabi oscillation between two quantum phases can be induced by a sudden quench of the quadratic Zeeman shift. We carried out our calculations using both a variational method and a full numerical method, and found excellent agreement.

Symmetry protected skyrmions in 3D spin-orbit coupled Bose gases

We present a variational study of pseudo-spin $1/2$ Bose gases in a harmonic trap with weak 3D spin-orbit coupling of $\bmsigma\cdot\mathbf{p}$ type. This spin-orbit coupling mixes states with different parities, which inspires us to approximate the single particle state with the eigenstates of the total angular momentum, i.e. superposition of harmonic $s$-wave and $p$-wave states. As the time reversal symmetry is protected by two-body interaction, we set the variational order parameter as the combination of two mutually time reversal symmetric eigenstates of the total angular momentum. The variational results essentially reproduce the 3D skyrmion-like ground state recently identified by Kawakami {\it et al.}. We show that these skyrmion-like ground states emerging in this model are primarily caused by $p$ wave spatial mode involving in the variational order parameter that drives two spin components spatially separated. We find the ground state of this system falls into two phases with different density distribution symmetries depending on the relative magnitude of intraspecies and interspecies interaction: Phase I has parity symmetric and axisymmetric density distributions, while Phase II is featured with special joint symmetries of discrete rotational and time reversal symmetry. With the increasing interaction strength the transition occurs between two phases with distinct density distributions, while the topological 3D skyrmion-like spin texture is symmetry protected.

Fragmentation of a spin-1 mixture in a magnetic field

We study the ground state quantum fragmentation in a mixture of a polar condensate and a ferromagnetic condensate when subject to an external magnetic field. We pay more attentions to the polar condensate and find that it will be less fragile in the mixture when perturbed by the magnetic field. Both atom numbers and the number fluctuations in the spin-0 component will keep in a high magnitude of order of $N$ when the magnetization of the system is increased. The role of the ferromagnetic condensate is to provide a uniform and stable background which can delay the rapid shrink of the 0-component population and make it possible to capture the \textquotedblleft super-fragmentation \textquotedblright. Our method has potential applications in measuring the inter-species spin-coupling interaction through adjusting the magnetic field.

Quantum Walks of Two Interacting Anyons in 1D Optical Lattices

We investigate continuous-time quantum walks of two indistinguishable anyons in one-dimensional lattices with both on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions based on the fractional Jordan-Wigner transformation. It is shown that the two-body correlations in position space are symmetric about the initial sites of two quantum walkers in the Bose limit ($χ=0$ ) and Fermi limit ( $χ=1$), while in momentum space this happens only in the Bose limit. An interesting asymmetry arises in the correlation for most cases with the statistical parameter $χ$ varying in between. It turns out that the origin of this asymmetry comes from the fractional statistics that anyons obey. On the other hand, the two-body correlations of hard-core anyons in position spaceshow uniform behaviors from anti-bunching to co-walking regardless of the statistical parameter. The momentum correlations in the case of strong interaction undergo a smooth process of two stripes smoothly merging into a single one, i.e. the evolution of fermions into hard-core bosons.

Two Atoms in a Double Well: An Exact Solution

We propose to experimentally realize an odd parity eigenstate $\left\vert b\right\rangle $ of two atoms in the double well. The occupation probability of this state shows evident dependence on the interaction, distinct from the result of two-mode model adopted in the Heidelberg experiment. The tunneling dynamics of two atoms starting from the $NOON$ state with infinite barrier height can be derived from the exactly solved model of $δ$-barrier split double well based on a Bethe ansatz type hypothesis of the wave functions. We find that the single particle tunneling transfer the probabilities between double occupancy and single occupancy of each well.

Tavis-Cummings model beyond the rotating wave approximation: Inhomogeneous coupling

We present the analytical solution of the Tavis-Cummings (TC) model for more than one qubit inhomogeneously coupled to a single mode radiation field beyond the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). The significant advantage of the displaced oscillator basis enables us to apply the same truncation techniques adopted in the single qubit Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model to the multiple qubits system. The derived analytical spectrum match perfectly the exact diagonalization numerical solutions of the inhomogeneous TC model in the parameter regime where the qubits transition frequencies are far off-resonance with the field frequency and the interaction strengths reach the ultra-strong coupling regime. The two-qubit TC model is quasi-exactly solvable because part of the spectra can be determined exactly in the homogeneous coupling case with two identical qubits or with symmetric(asymmetric) detuning. By means of the fidelity of quantum states we identify several nontrivial level crossing points in the same parity subspace, which implies that homogeneous coupled two-qubit TC model with $ω_1=ω_2$ or $ω_1\pmω_2=2ω_c$ is integrable. We further explore the time evolution of the qubit's population inversion and the entanglement behavior taking two qubits as an example. The analytical methods provide unexpectedly accurate results in describing the dynamics of the qubit in the present experimentally accessible coupling regime, showing that the collapse-revival phenomena emerge, survive, and are finally destroyed when the coupling strength increases beyond the ultra-strong coupling regime. The suggested procedure applies readily to the multiple qubits system such as the GHZ state entanglement evolution and quantum entanglement between a single photon and superconducting qubits of particular experiment interest.

Density-functional theory for the spin-1 bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

We propose the density-functional theory for one-dimensional harmonically trapped spin-1 bosons in the ground state with repulsive density-density interaction and anti-ferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction. The density distributions of spin singlet paired bosons and polarized bosons with different total polarization for various interaction parameters are obtained by solving the Kohn-Sham equations which are derived based on the local density approximation and the Bethe ansatz exact results for homogeneous system. Non-monotonicity of the central densities is attributed to the competition between the density interaction and spin-exchange. The results reveal the phase separation of the paired and polarized bosons, the density profiles of which respectively approach the Tonks-Girardeau gases of Bose-Bose pairs and scalar bosons in the case of strong interaction. We give the R-P phase diagram at strong interaction and find the critical polarization, which paves the way to direct observe the exotic singlet pairing in spinor gas experimentally.

Improvement of the matching of the exact solution and variational approaches in an interacting two-fermion system

A more reasonable trial ground state wave function is constructed for the relative motion of an interacting two-fermion system in a 1D harmonic potential. At the boundaries both the wave function and its first derivative are continuous and the quasi-momentum is determined by a more practical constraint condition which associates two variational parameters. The upper bound of the ground state energy is obtained by applying the variational principle to the expectation value of the Hamiltonian of relative motion on the trial wave function. The resulted energy and wave function show better agreement with the analytical solution than the original proposal.
