High-performance graphene-based electrostatic field sensor

Electrostatic sensing technology is widely utilized in both military and civilian applications, including electrostatic prevention in gas stations and various electronic devices. The high sensitivity of electrostatic sensor is capable to detect not only weak electrostatic charges, but also the weak disturbance of electrostatic field in distant. Here, we present a high-performance graphene-based electrostatic sensor. Combining the ultrahigh mobility of graphene and the long lifetime of carriers in lightly doped SiO2/Si substrate, our device achieves a fast response of ~2 us and detection limit of electrostatic potential as low as ~5 V, which is improved by an order of magnitude as compared to commercial product. The proposed device structure opens a promising pathway to high-sensitive electrostatic detection, and also greatly facilitates the development of novel sensors, e.g. portable and flexible electrostatic sensor.

Capacitance Performance of Sub-2-nm Graphene Nanochannels in Aqueous Electrolyte

Molecular dynamics simulations were used to explain the origin and properties of electrical double-layer capacitance in short graphene nanochannels with width below 2 nm. The results explain the previously reported experimental result on the non-monotonic dependence of the capacitance with the channel width. The mechanism for the anomalous increase of the capacitance in sub-1-nm in pore diameter is attributed here to the width-dependent radial location of counterions in the nanochannels, and the restricted number of co-ions. Decrease of the channel width lowers the number of co-ions and positions the counterions closer to the channel walls. For nanochannels with width ranging from 1 to 2 nm, co-ions are allowed to enter the nanochannel, and both types of ions assume alternating layered distributions leading to the decrease of the capacitance. Voltage is another control parameter which allows understanding capacitance in graphene nanochannels. As the voltage increases, due to limited space near the charged surface, more counterions need to be located in the center of the nanochannel resulting in further capacitance decrease.

Ionic Behavior in Highly Concentrated Aqueous Solutions Nanoconfined between Discretely Charged Silicon Surfaces

Through molecular dynamics simulations considering thermal vibration of surface atoms, ionic behaviors in concentrated NaCl solutions confined between discretely charged silicon surfaces have been investigated. The electric double layer structure was found sensitive to the density and distribution of surface charges. Due to the surface charge discreteness, slight charge inversion appeared which depended on the surface charge density, bulk concentration and confinement. In the nanoconfined NaCl solutions differently concentrated from 0.2 M to 4.0 M, the locations of accumulation layers for Na+ and Cl- ions kept stable, but their peak values increased. The higher the concentration was, the more obvious charge inversion appeared. In 4.0 M NaCl solution, Na+ and Cl- ions show obvious alternating layered distributions which may be corresponding to the solidification found in experiments. By changing surface separation, the confinement had a large effect on ionic distributions. As both surfaces approached each other, many ions and water molecules were squeezed out of the confined space. Two adjacent layers in ion or water distribution profiles can be forced to closer to each other and merge together. From ionic hydration analysis, the coordination number of Na+ ions in highly-confined space was much lower than that in the bulk.

Counterions and water molecules in charged silicon nanochannels: the influence of surface charge discreteness

In order to detect the effect of the surface charge discreteness on the properties at the solid-liquid interface, molecular dynamics simulation model taking consideration of the vibration of wall atoms was used to investigate the ion and water performance under different charge distributions. Through the comparison between simulation results and the theoretical prediction, it was found that, with the degree of discreteness increasing, much more counterions were attracted to the surface. These ions formed a denser accumulating layer which located much nearer to the surface and caused charge inversion. The ions in this layer were non-hydrated or partially hydrated. When a voltage was applied across the nanochannel, this dense accumulating layer did not move unlike the ions near uniformly charged surface. From the water density profiles obtained in nanochannels with different surface charge distributions, the influence of the surface charge discreteness on the water distributions could be neglected.

Conversational Recommendation System with Unsupervised Learning

We will demonstrate a conversational products recommendation agent. This system shows how we combine research in personalized recommendation systems with research in dialogue systems to build a virtual sales agent. Based on new deep learning technologies we developed, the virtual agent is capable of learning how to interact with users, how to answer user questions, what is the next question to ask, and what to recommend when chatting with a human user. Normally a descent conversational agent for a particular domain requires tens of thousands of hand labeled conversational data or hand written rules. This is a major barrier when launching a conversation agent for a new domain. We will explore and demonstrate the effectiveness of the learning solution even when there is no hand written rules or hand labeled training data.

Simultaneous Information and Energy Flow for IoT Relay Systems with Crowd Harvesting

It is expected that the number of wireless devices will grow rapidly over the next few years due to the growing proliferation of Internet-of-Things (IoT). In order to improve the energy efficiency of information transfer between small devices, we review state-of-the-art research in simultaneous wireless energy and information transfer, especially for relay based IoT systems. In particular, we analyze simultaneous information-and-energy transfer from the source node, and the design of time-switching and power-splitting operation modes, as well as the associated optimization algorithms. We also investigate the potential of crowd energy harvesting from transmission nodes that belong to multiple radio networks. The combination of source and crowd energy harvesting can greatly reduce the use of battery power and increase the availability and reliability for relaying. We provide insight into the fundamental limits of crowd energy harvesting reliability based on a case study using real city data. Furthermore, we examine the optimization of transmissions in crowd harvesting, especially with the use of node collaboration while guaranteeing Quality-of-Service (QoS).

Ion and water transport in charge-modified graphene nanopores

Porous graphene has high mechanical strength and atomic layer thickness, which make it a promising material for material separation and biomolecule sensing. Electrostatic interactions between charges in aqueous solution are a kind of strong long-range interaction which may have great influence on the fluid transport through nanopores. Here, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate ion and water transport through a 1.05-nm-in-diameter monolayer graphene nanopore with its edge charge-modified. From the results, it is found that the nanopores are selective to counterions when they are charged. As the charge amount increases, the total ionic currents show an increase-decrease profile while the co-ion currents monotonously decrease. The co-ions rejection can reach 75% and 90% when the nanopores are negatively and positively charged, respectively. Cl ions current increases and reaches a plateau, and Na+ current decreases with the charge amount in the systems where they act as counterions. Besides, the charge modification can enhance the water transport through nanopores obviously. This is mainly due to the ion selection of nanopores. Especially, positive charges on the pore edge facilitate the water transport much more than negative charges.

Analysis of Spectrum Occupancy Using Machine Learning Algorithms

In this paper, we analyze the spectrum occupancy using different machine learning techniques. Both supervised techniques (naive Bayesian classifier (NBC), decision trees (DT), support vector machine (SVM), linear regression (LR)) and unsupervised algorithm (hidden markov model (HMM)) are studied to find the best technique with the highest classification accuracy (CA). A detailed comparison of the supervised and unsupervised algorithms in terms of the computational time and classification accuracy is performed. The classified occupancy status is further utilized to evaluate the probability of secondary user outage for the future time slots, which can be used by system designers to define spectrum allocation and spectrum sharing policies. Numerical results show that SVM is the best algorithm among all the supervised and unsupervised classifiers. Based on this, we proposed a new SVM algorithm by combining it with fire fly algorithm (FFA), which is shown to outperform all other algorithms.

Novel energy detection using uniform noise distribution

Energy detection is widely used in cognitive radio due to its low complexity. One fundamental challenge is that its performance degrades in the presence of noise uncertainty, which inevitably occurs in practical implementations. In this work, three novel detectors based on uniformly distributed noise uncertainty as the worst-case scenario are proposed. Numerical results show that the new detectors outperform the conventional energy detector with considerable performance gains.

Outage Probability of Dual-Hop Selective AF With Randomly Distributed and Fixed Interferers

The outage probability performance of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward selective relaying system with global relay selection is analyzed for Nakagami-$m$ fading channels in the presence of multiple interferers at both the relays and the destination. Two different cases are considered. In the first case, the interferers are assumed to have random number and locations. Outage probability using the generalized Gamma approximation (GGA) in the form of one-dimensional integral is derived. In the second case, the interferers are assumed to have fixed number and locations. Exact outage probability in the form of one-dimensional integral is derived. For both cases, closed-form expressions of lower bounds and asymptotic expressions for high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio are also provided. Simplified closed-form expressions of outage probability for special cases (e.g., dominant interferences, i.i.d. interferers, Rayleigh distributed signals) are studied. Numerical results are presented to show the accuracy of our analysis by examining the effects of the number and locations of interferers on the outage performances of both AF systems with random and fixed interferers.

Cognitive radio has emerged as one of the most promising candidate solutions to improve spectrum utilization in next generation cellular networks. A crucial requirement for future cognitive radio networks is wideband spectrum sensing: secondary users reliably detect spectral opportunities across a wide frequency range. In this article, various wideband spectrum sensing algorithms are presented, together with a discussion of the pros and cons of each algorithm and the challenging issues. Special attention is paid to the use of sub-Nyquist techniques, including compressive sensing and multi-channel sub-Nyquist sampling techniques.

Power Allocation Strategies for Fixed-Gain Half-Duplex Amplify-and-Forward Relaying in Nakagami-m Fading

In this paper, we study power allocation strategies for a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward relay network employing multiple relays. We consider two optimization problems for the relay network: 1) optimal power allocation to maximize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 2) minimizing the total consumed power while maintaining the end-to-end SNR over a threshold value. We investigate these two problems for two relaying protocols of all-participate relaying and selective relaying and multiple cases of available channel state information (CSI) at the relays. We show that the SNR maximization problem is concave and the power minimization problem is convex for all protocols and CSI cases considered. We obtain closed-form expressions for the two problems in the case for full CSI and CSI of all the relay-destination links at the relays and solve the problems through convex programming when full CSI or CSI of the relay-destination links are not available at the relays. Numerical results show the benefit of having full CSI at the relays for both optimization problems. However, they also show that CSI overhead can be reduced by having only partial CSI at the relays with only a small degradation in performance.

Performance Analysis of Spectrum Sensing With Multiple Status Changes in Primary User Traffic

In this letter, the impact of primary user traffic with multiple status changes on the spectrum sensing performance is analyzed. Closed-form expressions for the probabilities of false alarm and detection are derived. Numerical results show that the multiple status changes of the primary user cause considerable degradation in the sensing performance. This degradation depends on the number of changes, the primary user traffic model, the primary user traffic intensity and the signal-to-noise ratio of the received signal. Numerical results also show that the amount of degradation decreases when the number of changes increases, and converges to a minimum sensing performance due to the limited sensing period and primary holding time.
