Efimovian Phonon Production for an Analog Coasting Universe in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Efimov effects arise from scale invariance, a fundamental symmetry with universal implications. While spatial Efimov physics has been extensively studied, realizing its temporal counterpart remains challenging, as it requires a dynamical system that breaks time-translation symmetry yet preserves the essential time-scaling symmetry. Analog cosmology offers a powerful platform to address this challenge, bridging the domains of Efimov physics and cosmology. Here, we predict a temporal Efimov effect in an analog linearly expanding universe realized with a quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. The invariance of phonon mode equations under time rescaling leads to particle production with two distinct dynamics: power-law growth and log-periodic oscillations, with the latter being the hallmark signature of the Efimov effect. Furthermore, these dynamics map directly onto sub- and super-horizon cosmological modes. Our predictions can be directly verified through time-averaged measurements of the density-fluctuation spectrum $S_{k}(t)$ in current experiments.

Dual Phonon Universe in a Spinor Bose Gas

We show the possibility of simulating a dual universe in a pseudospin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), wherein two phononic modes experience distinct curved spacetime metrics. Through ramping the interspecies interaction of the BEC, we observe that one universe expands, and in the mean time, the other contracts. These findings can be directly verified in existing cold-atom experimental setups by detecting the correlators of the scaled density contrast (SDC): The sizes of the expanded/contracted universes can be deduced from the SDC's oscillating frequencies, while the expanding/contracting histories are reflected in the SDC's amplitude. Our study demonstrates the great potential of spinor BECs for exploring multiverse-related physics in laboratory settings.

Understanding Visual Saliency in Mobile User Interfaces

For graphical user interface (UI) design, it is important to understand what attracts visual attention. While previous work on saliency has focused on desktop and web-based UIs, mobile app UIs differ from these in several respects. We present findings from a controlled study with 30 participants and 193 mobile UIs. The results speak to a role of expectations in guiding where users look at. Strong bias toward the top-left corner of the display, text, and images was evident, while bottom-up features such as color or size affected saliency less. Classic, parameter-free saliency models showed a weak fit with the data, and data-driven models improved significantly when trained specifically on this dataset (e.g., NSS rose from 0.66 to 0.84). We also release the first annotated dataset for investigating visual saliency in mobile UIs.

Strain-Rate-Dependent Deformation Behavior of Ti29Zr24Nb23Hf24 High Entropy Alloys at Elevated and Room Temperature

We investigate the strain-rate-dependent mechanical behavior and deformation mechanisms of a refractory high entropy alloy, Ti29Zr24Nb23Hf24 (at.%), with a single-phase body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. High-temperature compression tests were conducted at temperatures from 700 to 1100°C at strain rates ranging from 10-3 to 10 s-1. A sudden stress drop after yield point was observed at higher temperatures and lower strain rates with the Zener-Holloman parameter, lnZ, in the range of 17.2-20.7. Such a softening behavior can be related to the interaction of dislocations with short-range clustering. However, at higher strain rates or lower temperatures (lnZ>25.0), kink bands were activated being responsible for the continuous strengthening of the alloy in competition with the softening mechanism. Systematic TEM investigations reveal that dislocation walls formed along {110} planes and dislocation loops were observed at a low strain of 6% at a high strain rate of 1 s-1 and 800°C. Kink band induced dynamic recrystallization is evident upon further straining. On the other hand, at low strain rate of 10-3 s-1 and 800°C, discontinuous recrystallization mechanisms become dominant with arrays of dislocations forming in front of the bulged boundaries of parent grains. These sub-grain boundaries eventually turn into high-angle grain boundaries. We also investigate the deformation mechanism of the alloy under extremely high strain rate (103 s-1) at room temperature. The specimen exhibits extensive kink bands with arrays of dislocation walls. As further strained, multiple slip systems can be activated and the interaction of dislocation walls plays a vital role in the strain hardening of the alloy.
