Reconstruction of the deceleration parameter and the equation of state of dark energy

The new 182 gold supernova Ia data, the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement and the shift parameter determined from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data are combined to reconstruct the dark energy equation of state parameter $w(z)$ and the deceleration parameter $q(z)$. We find that the strongest evidence of acceleration happens around the redshift $z\sim 0.2$ and the stringent constraints on $w(z)$ lie in the redshift range $z\sim 0.2-0.5$. At the sweet spot, $-1.2<w(z)<-0.6$ for the dark energy parametrization $w(z)=w_0+w_a z/(1+z)^2$ at the $3σ$ confidence level. The transition redshift $z_t$ when the Universe underwent the transition from deceleration to acceleration is derived to be $z_t=0.36^{+0.23}_{-0.08}$. The combined data is also applied to find out the geometry of the Universe, and we find that at the $3σ$ confidence level, $|Ω_k|\alt 0.05$ for the simple one parameter dark energy model, and $-0.064<Ω_k<0.028$ for the $Λ$CDM model.

Thermodynamical properties of the Universe with dark energy

We have investigated the thermodynamical properties of the Universe with dark energy. Adopting the usual assumption in deriving the constant co-moving entropy density that the physical volume and the temperature are independent, we observed some strange thermodynamical behaviors. However, these strange behaviors disappeared if we consider the realistic situation that the physical volume and the temperature of the Universe are related. Based on the well known correspondence between the Friedmann equation and the first law of thermodynamics of the apparent horizon, we argued that the apparent horizon is the physical horizon in dealing with thermodynamics problems. We have concentrated on the volume of the Universe within the apparent horizon and considered that the Universe is in thermal equilibrium with the Hawking temperature on the apparent horizon. For dark energy with $w\ge -1$, the holographic principle and the generalized second law are always respected.

On curvature coupling and quintessence fine-tuning

We discuss the phenomenological model in which the potential energy of the quintessence field depends linearly on the energy density of the spatial curvature. We find that the pressure of the scalar field takes a different form when the potential of the scalar field also depends on the scale factor and the energy momentum tensor of the scalar field can be expressed as the form of a perfect fluid. A general coupling was proposed to explain the current accelerating expansion of the Universe and solve the fine-tuning problem.

Acceleration from M theory and Fine-tuning

The compactification of M theory with time dependent hyperbolic internal space gives an effective scalar field with exponential potential which provides a transient acceleration in Einstein frame in four dimensions. Ordinary matter and radiation are present in addition to the scalar field coming from compactification. We find that we have to fine-tune the initial conditions of the scalar field so that our Universe experiences acceleration now. During the evolution of our Universe, the volume of the internal space increases about 12 times. The time variation of the internal space results in a large time variation of the fine structure constant which violates the observational constraint on the variation of the fine structure constant. The large variation of the fine structure constant is a generic feature of transient acceleration models.

Probing the curvature and dark energy

Two new one-parameter tracking behavior dark energy representations $ω=ω_0/(1+z)$ and $ω=ω_0 e^{z/(1+z)}/(1+z)$ are used to probe the geometry of the Universe and the property of dark energy. The combined type Ia supernova (SN Ia), Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data indicate that the Universe is almost spatially flat and that dark energy contributes about 72% of the matter content of the present universe. The observational data also tell us that $ω(0)\sim -1$. It is argued that the current observational data can hardly distinguish different dark energy models to the zeroth order. The transition redshift when the expansion of the Universe changed from deceleration phase to acceleration phase is around $z_{\rm T}\sim 0.6$ by using our one-parameter dark energy models.

Exact scaling solutions and fixed points for general scalar field

We show that the most general dark energy model that possesses a scaling solution $ρ_ϕ\propto a^n$ is the k-essence model, which includes both of the quintessence and tachyon models. The exact scaling solutions are then derived. The potential that gives the tracking solution in which dark energy exactly tracks the background matter field is the inverse squared potential. The quintessence field with exponential potential can be obtained from the k-essence field with the inverse squared potential. We also find the fixed points and study their main properties, whereby the scalar field dominant fixed point is identified.

Observational constraints on the acceleration of the Universe

We propose a new parametrization of the deceleration parameter to study its time-variation behavior. The advantage of parameterizing the deceleration parameter is that we do not need to assume any underlying theory of gravity. By fitting the model to the 157 gold sample supernova Ia data, we find strong evidence that the Universe is currently accelerating and it accelerated in the past. By fitting the model to the 115 nearby and Supernova Legacy Survey supernova Ia data, the evidence that the Universe is currently accelerating is weak, although there is still a strong evidence that the Universe once accelerated in the past. The results obtained from the 157 gold sample supernova Ia data and those from the 115 supernova Ia data are not directly comparable because the two different data sets measure the luminosity distance up to different redshifts. We then use the Friedmann equation and a dark energy parametrization to discuss the same problem. When we fit the model to the supernova Ia data alone, we find weak evidence that the Universe is accelerating and the current matter density is higher than that measured from other experiments. After we add the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data to constrain the dark energy model, we find that the behavior of the deceleration parameter is almost the same as that obtained from parameterizing the deceleration parameter.

Super-acceleration on the Brane by Energy Flow from the Bulk

We consider a brane cosmological model with energy exchange between brane and bulk. Parameterizing the energy exchange term by the scale factor and Hubble parameter, we are able to exactly solve the modified Friedmann equation on the brane. In this model, the equation of state for the effective dark energy has a transition behavior changing from $w_{de}^{eff}>-1$ to $w_{de}^{eff}<-1$, while the equation of state for the dark energy on the brane has $w>-1$. Fitting data from type Ia supernova, Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, our universe is predicted now in the state of super-acceleration with $w_{de0}^{eff}=-1.21$.

Thermodynamics of an accelerated expanding universe

We investigate the laws of thermodynamics in an accelerating universe driven by dark energy with a time-dependent equation of state. In the case we consider that the physically relevant part of the Universe is that envelopped by the dynamical apparent horizon, we have shown that both the first law and second law of thermodynamics are satisfied. On the other hand, if the boundary of the Universe is considered to be the cosmological event horizon the thermodynamical description based on the definitions of boundary entropy and temperature breaks down. No parameter redefinition can rescue the thermodynamics laws from such a fate, rendering the cosmological event horizon unphysical from the point of view of the laws of thermodynamics.

Hologrphy and holographic dark energy model

The holographic principle is used to discuss the holographic dark energy model. We find that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy bound is far from saturation under certain conditions. A more general constraint on the parameter of the holographic dark energy model is also derived.

The Holographic dark energy reexamined

We have reexamined the holographic dark energy model by considering the spatial curvature. We have refined the model parameter and observed that the holographic dark energy model does not behave as phantom model. Comparing the holographic dark energy model to the supernova observation alone, we found that the closed universe is favored. Combining with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data, we obtained the reasonable value of the spatial curvature of our universe.

Transition of the dark energy equation of state in an interacting holographic dark energy model

A model of holographic dark energy with an interaction with matter fields has been investigated. Choosing the future event horizon as an IR cutoff, we have shown that the ratio of energy densities can vary with time. With the interaction between the two different constituents of the universe, we observed the evolution of the universe, from early deceleration to late time acceleration. In addition, we have found that such an interacting dark energy model can accommodate a transition of the dark energy from a normal state where $w_D>-1$ to $w_D<-1$ phantom regimes. Implications of interacting dark energy model for the observation of dark energy transition has been discussed.

Constraints on alternative models to dark energy

The recent observations of type Ia supernovae strongly support that the universe is accelerating now and decelerated in the recent past. This may be the evidence of the breakdown of the standard Friemann equation. We consider a general modified Friedmann equation. Three different models are analyzed in detail. The current supernovae data and the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe data are used to constrain these models. A detailed analysis of the transition from the deceleration phase to the acceleration phase is also performed.

Simplified diagrammatic expansion for effective operator

For a quantum many-body problem, effective Hamiltonians that give exact eigenvalues in reduced model space usually have different expressions, diagrams and evaluation rules from effective transition operators that give exact transition matrix elements between effective eigenvectors in reduced model space. By modifying these diagrams slightly and considering the linked diagrams for all the terms of the same order, we find that the evaluation rules can be made the same for both effective Hamiltonian and effective transition operator diagrams, and in many cases it is possible to combine many diagrams into one modified diagram. We give the rules to evaluate these modified diagrams and show their validity.

Conservation of connectivity of model-space effective interactions under a class of similarity transformation

Effective interaction operators usually act on a restricted model space and give the same energies (for Hamiltonian) and matrix elements (for transition operators etc.) as those of the original operators between the corresponding true eigenstates. Various types of effective operators are possible. Those well defined effective operators have been shown being related to each other by similarity transformation. Some of the effective operators have been shown to have connected-diagram expansions. It is shown in this paper that under a class of very general similarity transformations, the connectivity is conserved. The similarity transformation between hermitian and non-hermitian Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbative effective operators is one of such transformation and hence the connectivity can be deducted from each other.

Model independent analysis of dark energy I: Supernova fitting result

The nature of dark energy is a mystery to us. This paper uses the supernova data to explore the property of dark energy by some model independent methods. We first Talyor expanded the scale factor $a(t)$ to find out the deceleration parameter $q_0<0$. This result just invokes the Robertson-Walker metric. Then we discuss several different parameterizations used in the literature. We find that $Ω_{\rm DE0}$ is almost less than -1 at $1σ$ level. We also find that the transition redshift from deceleration phase to acceleration phase is $z_{\rm T}\sim 0.3$.

Observational constraints on dark energy model

The recent observations support that our universe is flat and expanding with acceleration. A quintessence model with a general relation between the quintessence potential and the quintessence kinetic energy was proposed to explain the phenomenon. The dark energy potential includes both the hyperbolic and the double exponential potentials. We analyze this model in detail by using the recent supernova and the first year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations. For a flat universe dominated by a dark energy with constant $ω$ which is a special case of the general model, we find that $Ω_{\rm m0}=0.30^{+0.06}_{-0.08}$ and $ω_{\rm Q}\le -0.82$, and the turnaround redshift $z_{\rm T}$ when the universe switched from the deceleration phase to the acceleration phase is $z_{\rm T}=0.65$. For the general model, we find that $Ω_{\rm m0}\sim 0.3$, $ω_{\rm Q0}\sim -1.0$, $β\sim 0.5$ and $z_{\rm T}\sim 0.67$. A model independent polynomial parameterization is also considered, the best fit model gives $Ω_{\rm m0}=0.40\pm 0.14$, $ω_{\rm Q0}=-1.4$ and $z_{\rm T}=0.37$.

Constraints on a new alternative model to dark energy

The recent type Ia supernova data suggest that the universe is accelerating now and decelerated in recent past. This may provide the evidence that the standard Friedmann equation needs to be modified. We analyze in detail a new model in the context of modified Friedmann equation using the supernova data published by the High-$z$ Supernova Search Team and the Supernova Cosmology Project. The new model explains recent acceleration and past deceleration. Furthermore, the new model also gives a decelerated universe in the future.
