Isotope effect and the role of phonon in the Fe-based superconductors

We studied the isotope effect of phonon in the Fe-based superconductors using a phenomenological two band model for the sign-changing s-wave ($\pm$s-wave) state. Within this mean-field model, we showed that the large isotope effect is not inconsistent with the $\pm$s-wave pairing state and its high transition temperature. In principle, a large phonon isotope coefficient $α$ implies a large phonon coupling constant. However, the asymmetric density of states (DOS) between two bands substantially enhances the value of $α$, so that a moderate value of the phonon coupling constant ($λ_{\rm ph} \approx 0.4$) can produce a very large value of $α$ ($\approx 0.4$) as well as a high transition temperature together with an antiferromagnet (AFM)-induced interaction.

Tunneling spectroscopy of $sπ$ pairing state as a model for FeAs superconductors

We present the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations of an $sπ$ pairing state of two band superconductivity as a model for the FeAs superconductors. The $sπ$ state is an s-wave pairing state with an internal $π$ phase, that is, nodeless gaps on each band but with the opposite sign. The novel features of this state are investigated by calculating the local density of states of the $π$ phase superconductor/normal metal bilayers. Because of the sign reversal between the two condensates, the zero bias conductance peak appears as observed in tunneling spectroscopy experiments on FeAs superconductors. This eliminates the major obstacle to establish the $sπ$ state as the pairing symmetry of the FeAs superconductors.

Possible pairing states of the Fe-based superconductors

We consider the minimal two-band model for the Fe-based superconductors with a phenomenological pairing interaction which mimics short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations. Two superconducting (SC) gap solutions are found to exist with the model: sign-changing s-wave gap ($\pm$s-wave) and double d-wave gap states. Both solutions hold the approximate relation $Δ_{h} ^{max} N_h \approx Δ_{e} ^{max} N_e$, a generic feature of two band model with a dominant interband pairing interaction. We carried out the calculations of the SC properties of the both SC states such as the density of states, temperature dependencies of spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, Knight shift, and penetration depth, particularly taking into account of the interband coherence factors. The results are discussed in comparison with the currently available experimental data.

Effects of phonon interaction on the pairing in the high-T$c$ superconductors

We study the effects of phonon interaction on the superconducting pairing in the background of a d-wave gap, mediated by antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations, using coupled BCS gap equations. We found that phonon interaction can induce a s-wave component to the d-wave gap in the (D+S) form with an interaction anisotropy and in the (D+$i$S) form without anisotropy, respectively. In either case, however, T$_c$ is not enhanced compared to the pure d-wave pairing without phonon interaction. On the other hand, anisotropic phonon interaction can dramatically enhance the d-wave pairing itself and therefore T$_c$, together with the AFM spin fluctuation interaction. This (D$_{AFM}$ + D$_{ph}$) type pairing exhibits strongly reduced isotope coefficient despite the large enhancement of T$_c$ by phonon interaction. Finally, we study the combined type of (D$_{AFM}$ + D$_{ph}$ +$i$S)) gap and calculate the penetration depth and specific heat to be compared with the experiments.

Theory of Neutron Scattering in High-T$_c$ Cuprates: Two Component Spin-Fermion Model

Recent neutron scattering experiments have revealed that the generic form of the magnetic excitations in the high-Tc cuprates of wide range of doping has the so-called "hourglass" shape; it features both upward and downward excitations at the incommensurate (IC) momenta spanning from the resonance peak at the commensurate momentum $(π,π)$. We propose the two-component spin-fermion model as a minimal phenomenological model which has both local spins and itinerant fermions as independent degrees of freedom. Our calculations of the dynamic spin correlation function provide good agreement with experiments and show: (1) the upward dispersion branch of magnetic excitations is mostly due to the local spin excitations; (2) the downward dispersion branch is from collective spin excitations of fermions; (3) the resonance mode is a mixture of both degrees of freedom.

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the PuMGa$_5$ materials

We examine the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ of PuRhGa$_5$ and PuCoGa$_5$, both in the superconducting and normal states, as well as their Knight shifts. Results for both compounds are consistent with a superconducting gap of d-wave symmetry in the presence of strong impurity scattering, though with quite different gap-over-$T_c$ ratios $2 Δ_{0}/ k_B T_c$ (8 for PuCoGa$_5$ and 5 for PuRhGa$_5$). In the normal state, PuRhGa$_5$ exhibits a gradual suppression of $(T_1 T)^{-1}$ below 25 K, while measurements for PuCoGa$_5$ reveal a monotonic increase down to $T_c$. We propose that this behavior is consistently understood by the crossover from the two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnetic regime of the local $5f$-electron spins of Pu to the concomitant formation of the fermion pseudogap based on the two-component spin-fermion model.

Theory of Knight Shift and Spin-Lattice Relaxation Rates of Pu-115

We calculated the Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rates of Pu-115 compounds assuming d-wave superconductivity in the presence of strong impurity scattering. We discuss the implications for recent measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation rate in the Pu-115 compound PuRhGa5 by Sakai and coworkers [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74, 1710 (2005)] and present a prediction for the corresponding Knight shift. In addition, we noticed a significant round-off of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 just above the superconducting transition temperature that is not observed in the sister compound PuCoGa5. It appears that in PuRhGa5 superconductivity is mediated by spin fluctuations, too. This provides additional support to the scenario of superconducting pairing mediated by spin fluctuations in the Pu-115 compounds similar to the Ce-115 compounds and the high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors.

Possible Pairing Mechanisms of PuCoGa$_5$ Superconductor

We examine possible pairing mechanisms of superconductivity in PuCoGa$_5$ based on spin-fluctuations or phonons as mediating bosons. We consider experimental data of specific heat C(T) and resistivity $ρ(T)$ as input to determine a consistent scattering boson with the superconducting transition temperature of 18.5K in PuCoGa$_5$. Irrespective to the type of boson, the characteristic boson frequency is found to be $\sim 150 K$ from the resistivity fitting. The spin fluctuation model is most consistent with the experimental resistivity, successfully explaining the anomalous temperature dependence ($\sim \frac{T^2}{150 K +T}$) at low temperatures as well as the saturation behavior at high temperatures. Assuming that the pairing state is non s-wave, the large residual resistivity $ρ_{imp} \sim 20 μΩcm \sim 120 K$ suggests that an ideally pure sample of PuCoGa$_5$ would have a maximum T$_c$ of 39 K.

Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the D+iD superconducting state: implications for CoO superconductor

We calculated the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ for the D+iD superconducting state with impurities. We found that small amount of unitary impurities quickly produces the residual density of states inside the gap. As a result, the T-linear behavior in 1/T$_1$ is observed at low temperatures. Our results show that the D+iD pairing symmetry of the superconducting state of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2} \cdot y$H$_2$ O is compatible with recent $^{59}$Co 1/T$_1$ experiments of several groups.

$1/T_1$ in the D-wave superconducting state with coexisting antiferromagnetism

We consider a general D-wave superconducting gap function in the presence of coexisting antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-rang order. We find that the D-wave order parameter develops additional nodes without lowering the symmetry of the state due to the interplay of the superconducting and AFM correlations. This AFM correlated D-wave gap has a small gap structure inside the generic D-wave gap. As a result of this additional structure it shows a quite different response to impurities compared to a standard D-wave gap. We calculate the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of this gap in the presence of impurities and discuss the implications for the experiments of some AFM heavy- fermion superconductors and in particular for CeRhIn5.

Mixed moment wave function for magnetic heavy fermion compounds

We propose a variational wave function for the ground state of the magnetic heavy fermion (HF) systems, in which both the Kondo and the RKKY interactions are variationally incorporated and the local f-orbital state exists as a linear combination of a full local moment state and a fully compensated state (mixed moment state). We describe the mechanism for the mixed moment ground state based on the large-N treatment of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian added with RKKY interaction. With the mixed moment ground state we can explain several puzzling experiments in magnetic HF compounds such as a small value of local moment, coexistence of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and the paramagnetic (PM) phases, local quantum criticality, etc.

Anomalous specific heat jump in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$

We study the anomalously large specific heat jump and its systematic change with pressure in CeCoIn$_5$ superconductor. Starting with the general free energy functional of the superconductor for a coupled electron boson system, we derived the analytic result of the specific heat jump of the strong coupling superconductivity occurring in the coupled electron boson system. Then using the two component spin-fermion model we calculate the specific heat coefficient $C(T)/T$ both for the normal and superconducting states and show a good agreement with the experiment of CeCoIn$_5$. Our result also clearly demonstrated that the specific heat coefficient $C(T)/T$ of a coupled electron boson system can be freely interpreted as a renormalization either of the electronic or of the bosonic degrees of freedom.

Superconductivity in Magnetically Ordered CeTe$_{1.82}$

We report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in a semimetallic magnetic material CeTe$_{1.82}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{SC}$ = 2.7 K (well below the magnetic ordering temperatures) under pressure ($>$ 2 kbar) is remarkably high, considering the relatively low carrier density due to a charge-density-wave transition associated with lattice modulation. The coexisting magnetic structure of a mixed ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism can provide a clue for this high $T_{SC}$. We discuss a theoretical model for its possible pairing symmetry and pairing mechanism.

Critical magnetic fluctuations induced superconductivity and residual density of states in $CeRhIn_5$ superconductor

We propose the multiband extension of the spin-fermion model to address the superconducting d-wave pairing due to magnetic interaction near critical point. We solve the unrestricted gap equation with a general d-wave symmetry gap and find that divergent magnetic correlation length $ξ$ leads to the very unharmonic shape of the gap function with shallow gap regions near nodes. These regions are extremely sensitive to disorder. Small impurity concentration induces substantial residual density of states. We argue that we can understand the large $N_{res}(0) = \lim_{T\to 0} C_p(T)/T$ value and its pressure dependence of the recently discovered $CeRhIn_5$ superconductor under pressure within this approach.

Pseudogap formation of four-layer BaRuO$_3$ and its electrodynamic response changes

We investiaged the optical properties of four-layer BaRuO$_{3}$, which shows a fermi-liquid-like behavior at low temperature. Its optical conductivity spectra clearly displayed the formation of a pseudogap and the development of a coherent peak with decreasing temperature. Temperature-dependences of the density $n$ and the scattering rate $1/τ$ of the coherent component were also derived. As the temperature decreases, both $n$ and $1/τ$ decrease for four-layer BaRuO$_{3}$. These electrodynamic responses were compared with those of nine-layer BaRuO$_{3}$, which also shows a pseudogap formation but has an insulator-like state at low temperature. It was found that the relative rates of change of both $n$ and $1/τ$ determine either metallic or insulator-like responses in the ruthenates. The optical properties of the four-layer ruthenate were also compared with those of other pseudogap systems, such as high $T_{c}$ cuprates and heavy electron systems.

Andreev reflections in the pseudogap state of cuprate supercondcutors

We propose that, if the pseudogap state in the cuprate superconductors can be described in terms of the phase-incoherent preformed pairs, there should exist Andreev reflection from these pairs even above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$. After giving qualitative arguments for this effect, we present more quantitative calculations based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. Experimental observations of the effects of Andreev reflections above $T_c$---such as an enhanced tunneling conductance below the gap along the copper oxide plane---could provide unambiguous evidence for the preformed pairs in the pseudogap state.

Tunneling Spectroscopy of the Underdoped High-$T_{c}$ Superconductors

Considering a possibility that the pseudogap state in the underdoped high-$T_{c}$ superconductors is not due to a superconducting correlation, we study the tunneling spectroscopy below $T_{c}$ based on the phenomenological models of the pseudogap state. Specifically we consider two cases: (1) the pseudogap is a simple suppression of the density of states with an unknown origin; (2) the pseudogap state is due to an antiferromagnetic correlation. For both cases we calculate $dI/dV$ using the BTK theory. The results are discussed in comparison with experiments.

A Vertex Correction in the Gap Equation for the High Temperature Superconductors

We show that the Migdal theorem is obviously violated in the high Tc cuprates and the vertex correction should be included, in particular, in the gap equation, in order to be consistent with the anomalously strong inelastic scattering in the ``hot spots'', which is observed from the various normal state experiments. The vertex correction is obtained by utilizing the generalized Ward identity, which is shown to hold in the important scattering channel for the pairing interaction in the high Tc cuprates. As a result, we find a strong enhancement of Tc from the vertex correction despite of the strong pair breaking effect due to the inelastic scattering.
