Dimensionality Reduction on Grassmannian via Riemannian Optimization: A Generalized Perspective

This paper proposes a generalized framework with joint normalization which learns lower-dimensional subspaces with maximum discriminative power by making use of the Riemannian geometry. In particular, we model the similarity/dissimilarity between subspaces using various metrics defined on Grassmannian and formulate dimen-sionality reduction as a non-linear constraint optimization problem considering the orthogonalization. To obtain the linear mapping, we derive the components required to per-form Riemannian optimization (e.g., Riemannian conju-gate gradient) from the original Grassmannian through an orthonormal projection. We respect the Riemannian ge-ometry of the Grassmann manifold and search for this projection directly from one Grassmann manifold to an-other face-to-face without any additional transformations. In this natural geometry-aware way, any metric on the Grassmann manifold can be resided in our model theoreti-cally. We have combined five metrics with our model and the learning process can be treated as an unconstrained optimization problem on a Grassmann manifold. Exper-iments on several datasets demonstrate that our approach leads to a significant accuracy gain over state-of-the-art methods.

Cold and Hot Nuclear Matter Effects on Charmonium Production in p+Pb Collisions at LHC Energy

We study cold and hot nuclear matter effects on charmonium production in p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}=5.02$ TeV in a transport approach. At the forward rapidity, the cold medium effect on all the $c\bar c$ states and the hot medium effect on the excited $c\bar c$ states only can explain well the $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ yield and transverse momentum distribution measured by the ALICE collaboration, and we predict a significantly larger $ψ'$ $p_\text{T}$ broadening in comparison with $J/ψ$. However, we can not reproduce the $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ data at the backward rapidity with reasonable cold and hot medium effects.

Thermal production of charm quarks in heavy ion collisions at Future Circular Collider

By solving the rate equation in an expanding quark-gluon plasma, we study thermal production of charm quarks in central Pb+Pb collisions at the Future Circular Collider. With the charm quark production cross section taken from the perturbative QCD at the next-to-leading order, we find that charm quark production from the quark-gluon plasma can be appreciable compared to that due to initial hard scattering between colliding nucleons.

$Ω_{ccc}$ Production in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

We investigate the production of $Ω_{ccc}$ baryon in high energy nuclear collisions via quark coalescence mechanism. The wave function of $Ω_{ccc}$ is solved from the Schrödinger equation for the bound state of three charm quarks by using the hyperspherical method. The production cross section of $Ω_{ccc}$ per binary collision in a central Pb+Pb collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV reaches 9 nb, which is at least two orders of magnitude larger than that in a p+p collision at the same energy. Therefore, it is most probable to discover $Ω_{ccc}$ in heavy ion collisions at LHC, and the observation will be a clear signature of the quark-gluon plasma formation.

Double ratio of charmonia in p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 TeV

Based on a kinetic description of J/psi dissociation and production in an expanding quark-gluon plasma that is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamics, we have studied the double ratio R_{p Pb}(psi')/R_{p Pb}(J/psi) of charmonia in p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 TeV by including not only the cold nuclear matter effects but also the hot nuclear matter effects. We find that the double ratio of prompt charmonia is significantly suppressed in the most central collisions as a result of the hot nuclear matter effects.

Heavy quark correlations and the effective volume for quarkonia production

Using the Boltzmann transport approach, we study the effective volume of a correlated heavy quark pair in a partonic medium based on their collision rate. We find that the effective volume is finite and depends sensitively on the momentum of the heavy quark and the temperature of the medium. Generally, it increases linearly with time $t$ at the very beginning and the increase then becomes slower due to multiple scattering, and finally it increases linearly with respect to $t^{3/2}$. We further find that the colliding heavy quark pair has an effective temperature similar to that of the medium even though their initial transverse momentum spectra are far from thermal equilibrium.

Spin Asymmetry of J/psi in Peripheral Pb+Pb Collisions at LHC

By generalizing the statistical model for particle production to the spin degree of freedom of initially produced J/psi, we study the spin projection J_y of J/psi perpendicular to the reaction plane in peripheral heavy ion collisions at the LHC energy that leads to a strong, albeit of short duration, magnetic field. We find that for J/psis produced directly from charm and anticharm quarks in the color singlet state, like that in the Color-Singlet Model, their yield in the presence of the magnetic field is larger for J_y=0 than for J_y=1 or -1. This leads to a spin asymmetry of finally produced J/ψeven after including their final-state scattering in the produced quark-gluon plasma.

Hot medium effects on J/psi production in p+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02 TeV

Based on a kinetic description of J/psi dissociation and production in an expanding quark-gluon plasma that is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamics, we have studied the hot medium effects on J/psi production in p+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02 TeV. Including also the cold nuclear matter effects, we are able to reproduce recent experimental results on the nuclear modification factor R_{pPb}(J/psi) measured by the ALICE Collaboration. We have also made predictions for the R_{pPb} of J/psi and the double ratio R_{pPb}^{pro}(psi')/R_{pPb}^{pro}(J/psi) of prompt quarkonia produced in the most central 10% p+Pb collisions. We find that different from the cold nuclear matter effects, the R_{pPb}(J/psi) is slightly smaller than that in the minimum bias collisions, and the double ratio is significantly less than one at backward rapidity.

Gluon dissociation of J/psi beyond the dipole approximation

Using a nonrelativistic potential model, we calculate the cross section for the leading-order gluon dissociation of J/psi by including the full gluon wave function. We find that the resulting cross section as a function of gluon energy is reduced by about a factor of three at its maximum value compared to that calculated in the dipole approximation that is usually adopted in theoretical studies. The effect of the reduced cross section on the J/psi dissociation width at finite temperature is also discussed.

ψ^\prime Production and B Decay in Heavy Ion Collisions at LHC

In comparison with J/ψ, the excited charmonium state ψ^\prime is loosely bounded and its yield is dominantly from the B-hadron decay. Based on the transport approach, we study the double ratio of N(ψ^\prime)/N(J/ψ) from A+A collisions to that from p+p collisions at LHC energy. We found that the primordial production in the initial stage and the regeneration in the hot medium are not significant for ψ^\prime production in heavy ion collisions at LHC and the double ratio in semi-central and central collisions is controlled by the B decay.

Velocity Dependence of Charmonium Dissociation Temperature in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions

In high-energy nuclear collisions, heavy quark potential at finite temperature controls the quarkonium production. Including the relaxation of the medium induced by the relative velocity between quarkonia and the deconfined expanding matter, the Debye screening is reduced and the quarkonium dissociation takes place at a higher temperature. As a consequence of the velocity dependent dissociation temperature, the quarkonium suppression at high transverse momentum is significantly weakened in high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC.

B_c meson enhancement and the momentum dependence in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy

B_c meson production in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s}=2.76 A TeV is surveyed in both a statistical coalescence model and a transport model. The nuclear modification factor R_{AA} is predicted to be between 2 and 18 in the most central collisions, which can help to confirm the regeneration mechanism. In addition, the momentum dependence is also investigated as given by the transport model. A strong suppression of the transverse momentum is found in central collisions accompanying the enhancement in yield. The spectrum and elliptic flow of B_c are also discussed.

Upsilon Production as a Probe for Early State Dynamics in High Energy Nuclear Collisions at RHIC

Upsilon production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energy is investigated. While the transverse momentum spectra of the ground state Upsilon(1s) are controlled by the initial state Cronin effect, the excited $b\bar b$ states are characterized by the competition between the cold and hot nuclear matter effects and sensitive to the dissociation temperatures determined by the heavy quark potential. We emphasize that it is necessary to measure the excited heavy quark states in order to extract the early stage information in high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC.

J/psi elliptic flow in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The J/psi elliptic flow in high energy nuclear collisions is calculated in a transport model. While the flow is very small at SPS and RHIC energies, it is strongly enhanced at LHC energy due to the dominance of the regeneration mechanism.

Rapidity Dependence of $J/ψ$ Production at RHIC and LHC

The motion of charmonium in heavy ion collisions is described by a three dimensional transport equation with initial production and continuous regeneration in hot medium. The observation of apparently stronger $J/ψ$ suppression at forward rapidity compared to that at midrapidity, so called $J/ψ$ puzzle at RHIC, can well be explained by the competition between the two production mechanisms. At LHC, however, the rapidity dependence of the $J/ψ$ production is dominated by the regeneration process.

J/psi Transverse Momentum Distribution in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

The transverse momentum (pt) dependence of J/psi production in heavy ion collisions is investigated in a transport model with both initial production and continuous regeneration of charmonia. The competition between the two production mechanisms results in a pt suppression in central collisions, the gluon multi-scattering in the initial stage leads to a high pt enhancement, and the regeneration populates J/psis at low pt region and induces a minimum in R_AA(pt). These three phenomena are indeed observed in both 200 GeV Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy.
