Symmetry TFTs and Anomalies of Non-Invertible Symmetries

It is known that the 't Hooft anomalies of invertible global symmetries can be characterized by an invertible TQFT in one higher dimension. The analogous statement remains to be understood for non-invertible symmetries. In this note we discuss how the linking invariants in a non-invertible TQFT known as the Symmetry TFT (SymTFT) can be used as a diagnostic for 't Hooft anomalies of non-invertible symmetries. When the non-invertible symmetry is non-intrinsically non-invertible, and hence the SymTFT is a Dijkgraaf-Witten model, the linking invariants can be computed explicitly. We illustrate this proposal through the examples of the abelian Higgs model in 2d, as well as adjoint QCD and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills in 4d. We also comment on how the 't Hooft anomalies of non-invertible symmetries impose new constraints on the dynamics.

Boson-fermion duality with subsystem symmetry

We explore an exact duality in $(2+1)$d between the fermionization of a bosonic theory with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ subsystem symmetry and a fermionic theory with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ subsystem fermion parity symmetry. A typical example is the duality between the fermionization of the plaquette Ising model and the plaquette fermion model. We first revisit the standard boson-fermion duality in $(1+1)$d with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ 0-from symmetry, presenting in a way generalizable to $(2+1)$d. We proceed to $(2+1)$d with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ subsystem symmetry and establish the exact duality on the lattice by using the generalized Jordan-Wigner map, with a careful discussion on the mapping of the twist and symmetry sectors. This motivates us to introduce the subsystem Arf invariant, which exhibits a foliation structure.

Quantum 4d Yang-Mills Theory and Time-Reversal Symmetric 5d Higher-Gauge Topological Field Theory

We explore 4d Yang-Mills gauge theories (YM) living as boundary conditions of 5d gapped short/long-range entangled (SRE/LRE) topological states. Specifically, we explore 4d time-reversal symmetric pure YM of an SU(2) gauge group with a second-Chern-class topological term at $θ=π$ (SU(2)$_{θ=π}$ YM), by turning on background fields for both the time-reversal (i.e., on unorientable manifolds) and 1-form center global symmetry. We find four classes of time-reversal and Lorentz symmetry-enriched SU(2)$_{θ=π}$ YM, labeled by $(K_1, K_2)$: $K_1=0,1$ specifies Kramers singlet/doublet Wilson line and new mixed higher 't Hooft anomalies; $K_2=0,1$ specifies boson/fermionic Wilson line and a new Wess-Zumino-Witten-like counterterm. Higher anomalies indicate that to realize all higher $n$-global symmetries locally on $n$-simplices, the 4d theory becomes a boundary of a 5d higher-symmetry-protected topological state (SPTs, as an invertible topological quantum field theory (TQFT) or a cobordism invariant in math, or as a 5d higher-symmetric interacting topological superconductor in condensed matter). By dynamically gauging the 1-form symmetry, we transform a 5d bulk SRE SPTs into an LRE symmetry-enriched topologically ordered state (SETs); thus we obtain the 4d SO(3)$_{θ=π}$ YM-5d LRE-higher-SETs coupled system with higher-form gauge fields. We further derive new exotic anyonic statistics of extended objects such as 2-worldsheet of strings and 3-worldvolume of branes, physically characterizing the 5d SETs. We discover triple and quadruple link invariants associated with the 5d higher-gauge TQFTs, hinting at a relation between non-supersymmetric 4d pure YM and topological links in 5d. We provide 4d-5d lattice simplicial complex regularizations and bridge to 4d quantum spin liquids. We constrain gauge dynamics by higher anomalies and a higher symmetry-extension method.

Non-Invertible Symmetries of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and Twisted Compactification

Non-invertible symmetries have recently been understood to provide interesting contraints on RG flows of QFTs. In this work, we show how non-invertible symmetries can also be used to generate entirely new RG flows, by means of so-called "non-invertible twisted compactification". We illustrate the idea in the example of twisted compactifications of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM) to three dimensions. After giving a catalogue of non-invertible symmetries descending from Montonen-Olive duality transformations of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, we show that twisted compactification by non-invertible symmetries can be used to obtain 3d $\mathcal{N}=6$ theories which appear otherwise unreachable if one restricts to twists by invertible symmetries.

Kramers-Wannier-like duality defects in (3+1)d gauge theories

We introduce a class of non-invertible topological defects in (3+1)d gauge theories whose fusion rules are the higher-dimensional analogs of those of the Kramers-Wannier defect in the (1+1)d critical Ising model. As in the lower-dimensional case, the presence of such non-invertible defects implies self-duality under a particular gauging of their discrete (higher-form) symmetries. Examples of theories with such a defect include SO(3) Yang-Mills (YM) at $θ= π$, $\mathcal{N}=1$ SO(3) super YM, and $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU(2) super YM at $τ= i$. We also introduce an analogous construction in (2+1)d, and give a number of examples in Chern-Simons-matter theories.

Fermionization and boundary states in 1+1 dimensions

In the last few years it was realized that every fermionic theory in 1+1 dimensions is a generalized Jordan-Wigner transform of a bosonic theory with a non-anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. In this note we determine how the boundary states are mapped under this correspondence. We also interpret this mapping as the fusion of the original boundary with the fermionization interface.

Comments on compatibility between Conformal symmetry and Continuous higher-form symmetries

We study the compatibility between the conformal symmetry together with the unitarity and the continuous higher-form symmetries. We show that the d-dimensional unitary conformal field theories are not consistent with continuous p-form symmetries for certain (d,p), assuming that the corresponding conserved current is a conformal primary operator. We further discuss several dynamical applications of this constraint.

Chiral Approximation to Twisted Bilayer Graphene: Exact Intra-Valley Inversion Symmetry, Nodal Structure and Implications for Higher Magic Angles

This paper presents a mathematical and numerical analysis of the flatband wavefunctions occurring in the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene at the "magic" twist angles. We show that the chiral model possesses an exact intra-valley inversion symmetry. Writing the flatband wavefunction as a product of a lowest Landau level quantum Hall state and a spinor, we show that the components of the spinor are anti-quantum Hall wavefunctions related by the inversion symmetry operation introduced here. We then show numerically that as one moves from the lowest to higher magic angles, the spinor components of the wavefunction exhibit an increasing number of zeros, resembling the changes in the quantum Hall wavefunction as the Landau level index is increased. The wavefunction zeros are characterized by a chirality, with zeros of the same chirality clustering near the center of the moire unit cell, while opposite chirality zeros are pushed to the boundaries of the unit cell. The enhanced phase winding at higher magic angles suggests an increased circulating current. Physical implications for scanning tunneling spectroscopy, orbital magnetization and interaction effects are discussed.

Higher Anomalies, Higher Symmetries, and Cobordisms II: Lorentz Symmetry Extension and Enriched Bosonic/Fermionic Quantum Gauge Theory

We systematically study Lorentz symmetry extensions in quantum field theories (QFTs) and their 't Hooft anomalies via cobordism. The total symmetry $G'$ can be expressed in terms of the extension of Lorentz symmetry $G_L$ by an internal global symmetry $G$ as $1 \to G \to G' \to G_L \to 1$. By enumerating all possible $G_L$ and symmetry extensions, other than the familiar SO/Spin/O/Pin$^{\pm}$ groups, we introduce a new EPin group (in contrast to DPin), and provide natural physical interpretations to exotic groups E($d$), EPin($d$), (SU(2)$\times$E(d))/$\mathbb{Z}_2$, (SU(2)$\times$EPin(d))/$\mathbb{Z}_2^{\pm}$, etc. By Adams spectral sequence, we systematically classify all possible $d$d Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs as invertible TQFTs) and $(d-1)$d 't Hooft anomalies of QFTs by co/bordism groups and invariants in $d\leq 5$. We further gauge the internal $G$, and study Lorentz symmetry-enriched Yang-Mills theory with discrete theta terms given by gauged SPTs. We not only enlist familiar bosonic Yang-Mills but also discover new fermionic Yang-Mills theories (when $G_L$ contains a graded fermion parity $\mathbb{Z}_2^F$), applicable to bosonic (e.g., Quantum Spin Liquids) or fermionic (e.g., electrons) condensed matter systems. For a pure gauge theory, there is a one form symmetry $I_{[1]}$ associated with the center of the gauge group $G$. We further study the anomalies of the emergent symmetry $I_{[1]}\times G_L$ by higher cobordism invariants as well as QFT analysis. We focus on the simply connected $G=$SU(2) and briefly comment on non-simply connected $G=$SO(3), U(1), other simple Lie groups, and Standard Model gauge groups (SU(3)$\times$SU(2)$\times$U(1))/$\mathbb{Z}_q$. We comment on SPTs protected by Lorentz symmetry, and the symmetry-extended trivialization for their boundary states.

Gauge Enhanced Quantum Criticality and Time Reversal Domain Wall: SU(2) Yang-Mills Dynamics with Topological Terms

We explore the low energy dynamics of the four siblings of Lorentz symmetry enriched SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with a theta term at $θ=π$ in $(3+1)$d. Due to a mixed anomaly between time reversal symmetry and the center symmetry, the low energy dynamics must be nontrivial. We focus on two possible scenarios: 1) time reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken by the two confining vacua, and 2) the low energy theory is described by a U(1) Maxwell gauge theory (e.g. U(1) spin liquid in condensed matter) which is deconfined and gapless while preserving time reversal symmetry. In the first scenario, we first identify the global symmetry on the time reversal domain wall, where time reversal symmetry in the bulk induces a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ unitary symmetry on the domain wall. We discuss how the Lorentz symmetry and the unitary $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry enrich the domain wall theory. In the second scenario, we relate the symmetry enrichments of the SU(2) Yang-Mills to that of the U(1) Maxwell gauge theory. This further opens up the possibility that SU(2) QCD with large and odd flavors of fermions could be a direct second order phase transition between two phases of U(1) gauge theories as well as between a U(1) gauge theory and a trivial vacuum (e.g. a trivial paramagnet), where the gauge group is enhanced to be non-Abelian at and only at the transition. We characterize these transitions, and name them as Gauge Enhanced Quantum Critical Points.

Multi-Layer Restricted Boltzmann Machine Representation of 1D Quantum Many-Body Wave Functions

We consider representing two classes of 1D quantum wave functions of spin systems, including the AKLT and CFT correlator wave functions, in terms of multi-layer restricted Boltzmann machines. In our prescription, the AKLT wave function can be exactly represented by a 2-layer restricted Boltzmann machine with five hidden spins per visible spin. The construction can be generalized to prove that any MPS wave function on $N$ unit cells with finite bond dimension can be approximated by a 2-layer restricted Boltzmann machine with $\mathcal{O}(N)$ hidden spins within an error which scales linearly with $N$. The Haldane-Shastry wave function or a chiral boson CFT correlator wave function, as any Jastrow type of wave functions, can be exactly written as a 1-layer Boltzmann machine with $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ hidden spins and $N$ visible spins. Applying the cumulant expansion, we further find that the chiral boson CFT correlator wave function (with small vertex operator conformal dimension $α$, i.e., $α<0.1$) can be approximated, within 99.9\% accuracy up to 22 visible spins, by a 1-layer RBM with $\mathcal{O}(N)$ hidden spins. The cumulant expansion also leads us to a physically inspiring result in which the hidden spins of the restricted Boltzmann machine can be interpreted as the conformal tower of the chiral boson CFT on the cylinder.

New Higher Anomalies, SU(N) Yang-Mills Gauge Theory and $\mathbb{CP}^{\mathrm{N}-1}$ Sigma Model

We hypothesize a new and more complete set of anomalies of certain quantum field theories (QFTs) and then give an eclectic verification. First, we propose a set of 't Hooft higher anomalies of 4d time-reversal symmetric pure SU(N)-Yang-Mills (YM) gauge theory with a second-Chern-class topological term at $θ=π$, via 5d cobordism invariants (higher symmetry-protected topological states), with N = $2, 3, 4$ and others. Second, we propose a set of 't Hooft anomalies of 2d $\mathbb{CP}^{\mathrm{N}-1}$-sigma models with a first-Chern-class topological term at $θ=π$, by enlisting all possible 3d cobordism invariants and selecting the matched terms. Based on algebraic/geometric topology, QFT analysis, manifold generator correspondence, condensed matter inputs such as stacking PSU(N)-generalized Haldane quantum spin chains, and additional physics criteria, we derive a correspondence between 5d and 3d new invariants. Thus we broadly prove a potentially complete anomaly-matching between 4d SU(N) YM and 2d $\mathbb{CP}^{\mathrm{N}-1}$ models at N = 2, and suggest new (but maybe incomplete) anomalies at N = 4. We formulate a higher-symmetry analog of "Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem" to constrain the low-energy dynamics.

Restricted Boltzmann Machines and Matrix Product States of 1D Translational Invariant Stabilizer Codes

We discuss the relations between restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) states and the matrix product states (MPS) for the ground states of 1D translational invariant stabilizer codes. A generic translational invariant and finitely connected RBM state can be expressed as an MPS, and the matrices of the resulting MPS are of rank 1. We dub such an MPS as an RBM-MPS. This provides a necessary condition for exactly realizing a quantum state as an RBM state, if the quantum state can be written as an MPS. For generic 1D stabilizer codes having a non-degenerate ground state with periodic boundary condition, we obtain an expression for the lower bound of their MPS bond dimension, and an upper bound for the rank of their MPS matrices. In terms of RBM, we provide an algorithm to derive the RBM for the cocycle Hamiltonians whose MPS matrices are proved to be of rank 1. Moreover, the RBM-MPS produced by our algorithm has the minimal bond dimension. A family of examples is provided to explain the algorithm. We finally conjecture that these features hold true for all the 1D stabilizer codes having a non-degenerate ground state with periodic boundary condition, as long as their MPS matrices are of rank 1.

Structure of the Entanglement Entropy of (3+1)D Gapped Phases of Matter

We study the entanglement entropy of gapped phases of matter in three spatial dimensions. We focus in particular on size-independent contributions to the entropy across entanglement surfaces of arbitrary topologies. We show that for low energy fixed-point theories, the constant part of the entanglement entropy across any surface can be reduced to a linear combination of the entropies across a sphere and a torus. We first derive our results using strong sub-additivity inequalities along with assumptions about the entanglement entropy of fixed-point models, and identify the topological contribution by considering the renormalization group flow; in this way we give an explicit definition of topological entanglement entropy $S_{\mathrm{topo}}$ in (3+1)D, which sharpens previous results. We illustrate our results using several concrete examples and independent calculations, and show adding "twist" terms to the Lagrangian can change $S_{\mathrm{topo}}$ in (3+1)D. For the generalized Walker-Wang models, we find that the ground state degeneracy on a 3-torus is given by $\exp(-3S_{\mathrm{topo}}[T^2])$ in terms of the topological entanglement entropy across a 2-torus. We conjecture that a similar relationship holds for Abelian theories in $(d+1)$ dimensional spacetime, with the ground state degeneracy on the $d$-torus given by $\exp(-dS_{\mathrm{topo}}[T^{d-1}])$.

Tunneling Topological Vacua via Extended Operators: (Spin-)TQFT Spectra and Boundary Deconfinement in Various Dimensions

Distinct quantum vacua of topologically ordered states can be tunneled into each other via extended operators. The possible applications include condensed matter and quantum cosmology. We present a straightforward approach to calculate the partition function on various manifolds and ground state degeneracy (GSD), mainly based on continuum/cochain Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFT), in any dimension. This information can be related to the counting of extended operators of bosonic/fermionic TQFT. On the lattice scale, anyonic particles/strings live at the ends of line/surface operators. Certain systems in different dimensions are related to each other through dimensional reduction schemes, analogous to (de)categorification. Examples include spin TQFTs derived from gauging the interacting fermionic symmetry protected topological states (with fermion parity $\mathbb{Z}_2^f$) of symmetry group $\mathbb{Z}_4\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ and $(\mathbb{Z}_4)^2$ in 3+1D, also $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^2$ in 2+1D. Gauging the last three cases begets non-Abelian spin TQFT/topological order. We consider situations where a TQFT lives on (1) a closed spacetime or (2) a spacetime with boundary, such that the bulk and boundary are fully-gapped and short or long-range entangled (SRE/LRE). Anyonic excitations can be deconfined on the boundary. We introduce new exotic topological interfaces on which neither particle nor string excitations alone condensed, but only fuzzy-composite objects of extended operators can end (e.g. a string-like composite object formed by a set of particles can end on a special 2+1D boundary of 3+1D bulk). We explore the relations between group extension constructions and partially breaking constructions (e.g. 0-form/higher-form/composite breaking) of topological boundaries, after gauging. We comment on the implications of entanglement entropy for some of such LRE systems.

Entanglement Entropy From Tensor Network States for Stabilizer Codes

In this paper, we present the construction of tensor network states (TNS) for some of the degenerate ground states of 3D stabilizer codes. We then use the TNS formalism to obtain the entanglement spectrum and entropy of these ground-states for some special cuts. In particular, we work out the examples of the 3D toric code, the X-cube model and the Haah code. The latter two models belong to the category of "fracton" models proposed recently, while the first one belongs to the conventional topological phases. We mention the cases for which the entanglement entropy and spectrum can be calculated exactly: for these, the constructed TNS is the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the ground states with respect to particular entanglement cuts. Apart from the area law, the entanglement entropies also have constant and linear corrections for the fracton models, while the entanglement entropies for the toric code models only have constant corrections. For the cuts we consider, the entanglement spectra of these three models are completely flat. We also conjecture that the negative linear correction to the area law is a signature of extensive ground state degeneracy. Moreover, the transfer matrices of these TNS can be constructed. We show that the transfer matrices are projectors whose eigenvalues are either 1 or 0. The number of nonzero eigenvalues is tightly related to the ground state degeneracy.

Entanglement entropy of (3+1)D topological orders with excitations

Excitations in (3+1)D topologically ordered phases have very rich structures. (3+1)D topological phases support both point-like and string-like excitations, and in particular the loop (closed string) excitations may admit knotted and linked structures. In this work, we ask the question how different types of topological excitations contribute to the entanglement entropy, or alternatively, can we use the entanglement entropy to detect the structure of excitations, and further obtain the information of the underlying topological orders? We are mainly interested in (3+1)D topological orders that can be realized in Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theories, which are labeled by a finite group $G$ and its group 4-cocycle $ω\in\mathcal{H}^4[G;U(1)]$ up to group automorphisms. We find that each topological excitation contributes a universal constant $\ln d_i$ to the entanglement entropy, where $d_i$ is the quantum dimension that depends on both the structure of the excitation and the data $(G,\,ω)$. The entanglement entropy of the excitations of the linked/unlinked topology can capture different information of the DW theory $(G,\,ω)$. In particular, the entanglement entropy introduced by Hopf-link loop excitations can distinguish certain group 4-cocycles $ω$ from the others.

Field Theories for Gauged Symmetry Protected Topological Phases: Abelian Gauge Theories with non-Abelian Quasiparticles

Dijkgraaf-Witten (DW) theories are of recent interest to the condensed matter community, in part because they represent topological phases of matter, but also because they characterize the response theory of certain symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases. However, as yet there has not been a comprehensive treatment of the spectra of these models in the field theoretic setting -- the goal of this work is to fill the gap in the literature, at least for a selection of DW models with abelian gauge groups but non-abelian topological order. As applications, various correlation functions and fusion rules of line operators are calculated. We discuss for example the appearance of non-abelian statistics in DW theories with abelian gauge groups.
