An Efficient Algorithm for Spatial-Spectral Partial Volume Compartment Mapping with Applications to Multicomponent Diffusion and Relaxation MRI

We introduce a new algorithm to solve a regularized spatial-spectral image estimation problem. Our approach is based on the linearized alternating directions method of multipliers (LADMM), which is a variation of the popular ADMM algorithm. Although LADMM has existed for some time, it has not been very widely used in the computational imaging literature. This is in part because there are many possible ways of mapping LADMM to a specific optimization problem, and it is nontrivial to find a computationally efficient implementation out of the many competing alternatives. We believe that our proposed implementation represents the first application of LADMM to the type of optimization problem considered in this work (involving a linear-mixture forward model, spatial regularization, and nonnegativity constraints). We evaluate our algorithm in a variety of multiparametric MRI partial volume mapping scenarios (diffusion-relaxation, relaxation-relaxation, relaxometry, and fingerprinting), where we consistently observe substantial ($\sim$3$\times$-50$\times$) speed improvements. We expect this to reduce barriers to using spatially-regularized partial volume compartment mapping methods. Further, the considerable improvements we observed also suggest the potential value of considering LADMM for a broader set of computational imaging problems.

Robust altermagnetism and compensated ferrimagnetism in MnPX$_3$-based (X = S or Se) heterostructures

The recent research interests in the non-relativistic spin splitting of electronic band structures have led to the exploration of altermagnets and other compensated magnets. Here, we show that various types of non-relativistic spin splitting can be robustly induced by constructing Van der Waals heterostructures consisting of materials with intra-plane anti-ferromagnetic orders and suitable substrates. Using MnPX$_3$ (X = S or Se) as an example, which has a Néel magnetic order, we demonstrate that altermagnetic spin splitting can arise in the AA-stacking MnPX$_3$/MPX$_3$ (M = Cd, Mg, or Zn) heterostructures. For the AB-stacking heterostructures that are semiconducting, ferrimagnetic-type spin splitting emerges, and the fully compensated magnetization is protected by the Luttinger theorem. By combining with a Van der Waals ferroelectric substrate like CuInP$_2$S$_6$, MnPX$_3$-based heterostructures can show tunable spin splitting and spin-related properties that depend on the electronic band structures and ferroelectric polarization, which can be non-volatilely reversed by applying an out-of-plane electric field. Our study provides a route to induce tunable non-relativistic spin splitting in experimentally synthesizable two-dimensional magnets.

CoCoHD: Congress Committee Hearing Dataset

U.S. congressional hearings significantly influence the national economy and social fabric, impacting individual lives. Despite their importance, there is a lack of comprehensive datasets for analyzing these discourses. To address this, we propose the Congress Committee Hearing Dataset (CoCoHD), covering hearings from 1997 to 2024 across 86 committees, with 32,697 records. This dataset enables researchers to study policy language on critical issues like healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights, and climate justice. We demonstrate its potential with a case study on 1,000 energy-related sentences, analyzing the Energy and Commerce Committee's stance on fossil fuel consumption. By fine-tuning pre-trained language models, we create energy-relevant measures for each hearing. Our market analysis shows that natural language analysis using CoCoHD can predict and highlight trends in the energy sector.

Abnormal Trading Detection in the NFT Market

The Non-Fungible-Token (NFT) market has experienced explosive growth in recent years. According to DappRadar, the total transaction volume on OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace, reached 34.7 billion dollars in February 2023. However, the NFT market is mostly unregulated and there are significant concerns about money laundering, fraud and wash trading. The lack of industry-wide regulations, and the fact that amateur traders and retail investors comprise a significant fraction of the NFT market, make this market particularly vulnerable to fraudulent activities. Therefore it is essential to investigate and highlight the relevant risks involved in NFT trading. In this paper, we attempted to uncover common fraudulent behaviors such as wash trading that could mislead other traders. Using market data, we designed quantitative features from the network, monetary, and temporal perspectives that were fed into K-means clustering unsupervised learning algorithm to sort traders into groups. Lastly, we discussed the clustering results' significance and how regulations can reduce undesired behaviors. Our work can potentially help regulators narrow down their search space for bad actors in the market as well as provide insights for amateur traders to protect themselves from unforeseen frauds.

PALMNUT: An Enhanced Proximal Alternating Linearized Minimization Algorithm with Application to Separate Regularization of Magnitude and Phase

We introduce a new algorithm for complex image reconstruction with separate regularization of the image magnitude and phase. This optimization problem is interesting in many different image reconstruction contexts, although is nonconvex and can be difficult to solve. In this work, we first describe a novel implementation of the previous proximal alternating linearized minization (PALM) algorithm to solve this optimization problem. We then make enhancements to PALM, leading to a new algorithm named PALMNUT that combines the PALM together with Nesterov's momentum and a novel approach that relies on uncoupled coordinatewise step sizes derived from coordinatewise Lipschitz-like bounds. Theoretically, we establish that a version of PALMNUT (without Nesterov's momentum) monotonically decreases the objective function, leading to guaranteed convergence in many cases of interest. Empirical results obtained in the context of magnetic resonance imaging demonstrate that PALMNUT has computational advantages over common existing approaches like alternating minimization. Although our focus is on the application to separate magnitude and phase regularization, we expect that the same approach may also be useful in other nonconvex optimization problems with similar objective function structure.

Fast Multi-class Dictionaries Learning with Geometrical Directions in MRI Reconstruction

Objective: Improve the reconstructed image with fast and multi-class dictionaries learning when magnetic resonance imaging is accelerated by undersampling the k-space data. Methods: A fast orthogonal dictionary learning method is introduced into magnetic resonance image reconstruction to providing adaptive sparse representation of images. To enhance the sparsity, image is divided into classified patches according to the same geometrical direction and dictionary is trained within each class. A new sparse reconstruction model with the multi-class dictionaries is proposed and solved using a fast alternating direction method of multipliers. Results: Experiments on phantom and brain imaging data with acceleration factor up to 10 and various undersampling patterns are conducted. The proposed method is compared with state-of-the-art magnetic resonance image reconstruction methods. Conclusion: Artifacts are better suppressed and image edges are better preserved than the compared methods. Besides, the computation of the proposed approach is much faster than the typical K-SVD dictionary learning method in magnetic resonance image reconstruction. Significance: The proposed method can be exploited in undersapmled magnetic resonance imaging to reduce data acquisition time and reconstruct images with better image quality.

Projected Iterative Soft-thresholding Algorithm for Tight Frames in Compressed Sensing Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Compressed sensing has shown great potentials in accelerating magnetic resonance imaging. Fast image reconstruction and high image quality are two main issues faced by this new technology. It has been shown that, redundant image representations, e.g. tight frames, can significantly improve the image quality. But how to efficiently solve the reconstruction problem with these redundant representation systems is still challenging. This paper attempts to address the problem of applying iterative soft-thresholding algorithm (ISTA) to tight frames based magnetic resonance image reconstruction. By introducing the canonical dual frame to construct the orthogonal projection operator on the range of the analysis sparsity operator, we propose a projected iterative soft-thresholding algorithm (pISTA) and further accelerate it by incorporating the strategy proposed by Beck and Teboulle in 2009. We theoretically prove that pISTA converges to the minimum of a function with a balanced tight frame sparsity. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves better reconstruction than the widely used synthesis sparse model and the accelerated pISTA converges faster or comparable to the state-of-art smoothing FISTA. One major advantage of pISTA is that only one extra parameter, the step size, is introduced and the numerical solution is stable to it in terms of image reconstruction errors, thus allowing easily setting in many fast magnetic resonance imaging applications.
