Mastering Autonomous Assembly in Fusion Application with Learning-by-doing: a Peg-in-hole Study

Robotic peg-in-hole assembly represents a critical area of investigation in robotic automation. The fusion of reinforcement learning (RL) and deep neural networks (DNNs) has yielded remarkable breakthroughs in this field. However, existing RL-based methods grapple with delivering optimal performance under the unique environmental and mission constraints of fusion applications. As a result, we propose an inventively designed RL-based approach. In contrast to alternative methods, our focus centers on enhancing the DNN architecture rather than the RL model. Our strategy receives and integrates data from the RGB camera and force/torque (F/T) sensor, training the agent to execute the peg-in-hole assembly task in a manner akin to human hand-eye coordination. All training and experimentation unfold within a realistic environment, and empirical outcomes demonstrate that this multi-sensor fusion approach excels in rigid peg-in-hole assembly tasks, surpassing the repeatable accuracy of the robotic arm utilized--0.1 mm--in uncertain and unstable conditions.

Analytical Solution of Transverse Oscillation in Cyclotron Using LP Method

We have carried out an approximate analytical solution to precisely consider the influence of magnetic field on the transverse oscillation of particles in cyclotron. The differential equations of transverse oscillation are solved from the Lindstedt-Poincare method. After careful deduction, the accurate first order analytic solutions are obtained. The analytical solutions are applied to the magnetic field, comes from an isochronous cyclotron with four spiral sectors, the accuracy of these analytical solutions is verified and confirmed from the comparison of numerical method. Finally, we discussed the transverse oscillation at v0=N/2 , using the same analytical solution.

New method to design stellarator coils without the winding surface

Finding an easy-to-build coils set has been a critical issue for stellarator design for decades. Conventional approaches assume a toroidal "winding" surface. We'll investigate if the existence of winding surface unnecessarily constrains the optimization, and a new method to design coils for stellarators is presented. Each discrete coil is represented as an arbitrary, closed, one-dimensional curve embedded in three-dimensional space. A target function to be minimized that covers both physical requirements and engineering constraints is constructed. The derivatives of the target function are calculated analytically. A numerical code, named FOCUS, has been developed. Applications to a simple configuration, the W7-X, and LHD plasmas are presented.

Ion cyclotron resonance heating systems upgrade toward high power and CW operations in WEST

The design of the WEST (Tungsten-W Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) Ion cyclotron resonance heating antennas is based on a previously tested conjugate-T Resonant Double Loops prototype equipped with internal vacuum matching capacitors. The design and construction of three new WEST ICRH antennas are being carried out in close collaboration with ASIPP, within the framework of the Associated Laboratory in the fusion field between IRFM and ASIPP. The coupling performance to the plasma and the load-tolerance have been improved, while adding Continuous Wave operation capability by introducing water cooling in the entire antenna. On the generator side, the operation class of the high power tetrodes is changed from AB to B in order to allow high power operation (up to 3 MW per antenna) under higher VSWR (up to 2:1). Reliability of the generators is also improved by increasing the cavity breakdown voltage. The control and data acquisition system is also upgraded in order to resolve and react on fast events, such as ELMs. A new optical arc detection system comes in reinforcement of the V r /V f and SHAD systems.
