BACKRUNNER: Mitigating Smart Contract Attacks in the Real World

Billions of dollars have been lost due to vulnerabilities in smart contracts. To counteract this, researchers have proposed attack frontrunning protections designed to preempt malicious transactions by inserting "whitehat" transactions ahead of them to protect the assets. In this paper, we demonstrate that existing frontrunning protections have become ineffective in real-world scenarios. Specifically, we collected 158 recent real-world attack transactions and discovered that 141 of them can bypass state-of-the-art frontrunning protections. We systematically analyze these attacks and show how inherent limitations of existing frontrunning techniques hinder them from protecting valuable assets in the real world. We then propose a new approach involving 1) preemptive hijack, and 2) attack backrunning, which circumvent the existing limitations and can help protect assets before and after an attack. Our approach adapts the exploit used in the attack to the same or similar contracts before and after the attack to safeguard the assets. We conceptualize adapting exploits as a program repair problem and apply established techniques to implement our approach into a full-fledged framework, BACKRUNNER. Running on previous attacks in 2023, BACKRUNNER can successfully rescue more than \$410M. In the real world, it has helped rescue over \$11.2M worth of assets in 28 separate incidents within two months.

Exploring the Dark Energy Equation of State with JWST

Observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have unveiled several galaxies with stellar masses $M_*\gtrsim10^{10} M_\odot$ at redshifts $7.4\lesssim z\lesssim 9.1$. These remarkable findings indicate an unexpectedly high stellar mass density, which contradicts the prediction of the $Λ\rm CDM$ model. Our study utilizes the Chevallier--Polarski--Linder (CPL) parameterization, one of the dynamic dark energy models, to probe the role of dark energy on shaping galaxy formation. By considering varying star formation efficiencies within this framework, our analysis demonstrates that in a universe with a higher proportion of dark energy, more massive galaxies are formed at high redshifts, given a fixed perturbation amplitude observed today. These intriguing results highlight the promising prospect of revealing the nature of dark energy by analyzing the high-redshift massive galaxies.

Muon neutrinos and the cosmological abundance of primordial black holes

In the mixed dark matter scenarios consisting of primordial black holes (PBHs) and particle dark matter (DM), PBHs can accrete surrounding DM particles to form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs or clothed PBHs) even at an early epoch of the Universe. The distribution of DM particles in a UCMH follows a steeper density profile compared with a classical DM halo. It is expected that the DM annihilation rate is very large in UCMHs, resulting in a contribution to, e.g., the extragalactic neutrino flux. In this work, we investigate the extragalactic neutrino flux from clothed PBHs due to DM annihilation, and then the muon flux for neutrino detection. Compared with the atmospheric neutrino flux, we derive the upper limits on the cosmological abundance of PBHs for 10 years of exposure time of, e.g., the IceCube experiment. Compared with other constraints, although the upper limits obtained by us are not the strongest, it is a different way to study the cosmological abundance of PBHs.

Occlusion-Free Image Based Visual Servoing using Probabilistic Control Barrier Certificates

Image-based visual servoing (IBVS) is a widely-used approach in robotics that employs visual information to guide robots towards desired positions. However, occlusions in this approach can lead to visual servoing failure and degrade the control performance due to the obstructed vision feature points that are essential for providing visual feedback. In this paper, we propose a Control Barrier Function (CBF) based controller that enables occlusion-free IBVS tasks by automatically adjusting the robot's configuration to keep the feature points in the field of view and away from obstacles. In particular, to account for measurement noise of the feature points, we develop the Probabilistic Control Barrier Certificates (PrCBC) using control barrier functions that encode the chance-constrained occlusion avoidance constraints under uncertainty into deterministic admissible control space for the robot, from which the resulting configuration of robot ensures that the feature points stay occlusion free from obstacles with a satisfying predefined probability. By integrating such constraints with a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework, the sequence of optimized control inputs can be derived to achieve the primary IBVS task while enforcing the occlusion avoidance during robot movements. Simulation results are provided to validate the performance of our proposed method.

Constraining primordial black holes as dark matter using AMS-02 data

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are the plausible candidates for the cosmological dark matter. Theoretically, PBHs with masses $M_{\rm PBH}$ in the range of $4\times10^{14}\sim 10^{17}\,{\rm g}$ can emit sub-GeV electrons and positrons through Hawking radiation. Some of these particles could undergo diffusive reacceleration during propagation in the Milky Way, potentially reaching energies up to the GeV level observed by AMS-02. In this work, we utilize AMS-02 data to constrain the PBH abundance $f_{\rm PBH}$ by employing the reacceleration mechanism. Under the assumption of a monochromatic PBH mass distribution, our findings reveal that the limit is stricter than that derived from Voyager 1 data. This difference is particularly pronounced when $M_{\rm PBH}\lesssim10^{15}\,{\rm g}$, exceeding an order of magnitude. The constraints are even more robust in a more realistic scenario involving a log-normal mass distribution of PBHs. Moreover, we explore the impact of varying propagation parameters and solar modulation potential within reasonable ranges, and find that such variations have minimal effects on the final results.

Decentralized Multi-Robot Line-of-Sight Connectivity Maintenance under Uncertainty

In this paper, we propose a novel decentralized control method to maintain Line-of-Sight connectivity for multi-robot networks in the presence of Guassian-distributed localization uncertainty. In contrast to most existing work that assumes perfect positional information about robots or enforces overly restrictive rigid formation against uncertainty, our method enables robots to preserve Line-of-Sight connectivity with high probability under unbounded Gaussian-like positional noises while remaining minimally intrusive to the original robots' tasks. This is achieved by a motion coordination framework that jointly optimizes the set of existing Line-of-Sight edges to preserve and control revisions to the nominal task-related controllers, subject to the safety constraints and the corresponding composition of uncertainty-aware Line-of-Sight control constraints. Such compositional control constraints, expressed by our novel notion of probabilistic Line-of-Sight connectivity barrier certificates (PrLOS-CBC) for pairwise robots using control barrier functions, explicitly characterize the deterministic admissible control space for the two robots. The resulting motion ensures Line-of-Sight connectedness for the robot team with high probability. Furthermore, we propose a fully decentralized algorithm that decomposes the motion coordination framework by interleaving the composite constraint specification and solving for the resulting optimization-based controllers. The optimality of our approach is justified by the theoretical proofs. Simulation and real-world experiments results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Constraints on primordial black holes in the mixed dark matter scenarios using the ratio $\rm (^3{He}+D)/H$

We derive the upper limit on the dark matter (DM) fraction in primordial black holes (PBHs) in the mixed DM scenarios. In this scenarios, a PBH can accrete weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) to form a ultracompact minihalo (UCMH) with a density profile of $ρ_{\rm DM}(r)\sim r^{-9/4}$. The energy released from UCMHs due to dark matter annihilation has influence on the photodissociation of $^{4}{\rm He}$, producing the $^{3}{\rm He}$ and the D. By requiring that the ratio $\rm (^3{He}+D)/H$ caused by UCMHs does not exceed the measured value, we derive the upper limit on the dark matter fraction in PBHs. For the canonical value of DM thermally averaged annihilation cross section $\left<σv\right>=3\times 10^{-26}\rm cm^{3}s^{-1}$, we find that the upper limit is $f_{\rm PBH} < 0.35(0.75)$ for DM mass $m_χ=1(10)~\rm GeV$. Compared with other limits obtained by different astronomical measurements, although our limit is not the strongest, we provide a different way of constraining the cosmological abundance of PBHs.

Influence of the deviation of the matter power spectrum at small scales on the global 21-cm signal at cosmic dawn

The matter power spectrum has been strongly constrained by astronomical measurements at large scales, but only weakly at small scales. Compared with the standard scenario, the deviation of the matter power spectrum at small scales has influence on the cosmological structure formation, e.g., the comoving number density of dark matter halos. The thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) can be changed if dark matter is made of weakly interacting massive particles and can annihilate into standard model particles. The changes of the evolution of IGM could leave imprints on the relevant astronomical observations. Taking into account the dark matter annihilation, we investigate the impact of the deviation of matter power spectrum at small scales on the global 21-cm signal. In view of the measurements of the global 21-cm signal by the EDGES experiment, we explore the allowed parameter space of $m_s$, which describes the degree of deviation, by requiring the differential brightness temperature of the global 21-cm signal $δT_{21} \le -50~\rm mK$ at redshift $z=17$.

Minimally Constrained Multi-Robot Coordination with Line-of-sight Connectivity Maintenance

In this paper, we consider a team of mobile robots executing simultaneously multiple behaviors by different subgroups, while maintaining global and subgroup line-of-sight (LOS) network connectivity that minimally constrains the original multi-robot behaviors. The LOS connectivity between pairwise robots is preserved when two robots stay within the limited communication range and their LOS remains occlusion-free from static obstacles while moving. By using control barrier functions (CBF) and minimum volume enclosing ellipsoids (MVEE), we first introduce the LOS connectivity barrier certificate (LOS-CBC) to characterize the state-dependent admissible control space for pairwise robots, from which their resulting motion will keep the two robots LOS connected over time. We then propose the Minimum Line-of-Sight Connectivity Constraint Spanning Tree (MLCCST) as a step-wise bilevel optimization framework to jointly optimize (a) the minimum set of LOS edges to actively maintain, and (b) the control revision with respect to a nominal multi-robot controller due to LOS connectivity maintenance. As proved in the theoretical analysis, this allows the robots to improvise the optimal composition of LOS-CBC control constraints that are least constraining around the nominal controllers, and at the same time enforce the global and subgroup LOS connectivity through the resulting preserved set of pairwise LOS edges. The framework thus leads to robots staying as close to their nominal behaviors, while exhibiting dynamically changing LOS-connected network topology that provides the greatest flexibility for the existing multi-robot tasks in real time. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through simulations with up to 64 robots.

Impact of radiation from primordial black holes on the 21-cm angular-power spectrum in the dark ages

We investigate the impact of radiation from primordial black holes (PBHs), in the mass range of $10^{15} \lesssim M_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{17}~\rm g$ and $10^{2} \lesssim M_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{4}~M_{\odot}$, on the 21-cm angular-power spectrum in the dark ages. PBHs in the former mass range effect the 21-cm angular-power spectrum through the evaporation known as Hawking radiation, while the radiation from the accretion process in the latter mass range. In the dark ages, radiation from PBHs can increase the ionization fraction and temperature of the intergalactic medium, change the global 21-cm differential brightness temperature and then effect the 21-cm angular-power spectrum. Taking into account the effects of PBHs, we find that in the dark ages, $30 \lesssim z \lesssim 100$, the amplitude of the 21-cm angular-power spectrum is decreased depending on the mass and mass fraction of PBHs. We also investigate the potential constraints on the mass fraction of PBHs in the form of dark matter for the future radio telescope in lunar obit or on the farside surface of the Moon.

Constraints on primordial black holes with CMB spectral distortions

In the mixed dark matter scenarios consisting of primordial black holes (PBHs) and weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), WIMPs can be accreted onto PBHs to form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs) with a density spike in the early universe. Compared with the classical dark matter halo, UCMHs are formed earlier and have a higher density of center. Since the annihilation rate is proportional to the squared number density of WIMPs, it is expected that WIMPs annihilation within UCMHs is enhanced and has influences on the early universe. Between the time of recombination and matter-radiation equality, the energy released from WIMPs annihilation within UCMHs is injected into the Universe resulting in CMB $y$-type distortion. We investigate these effects and derive the upper limits on the abundance of PBHs taking advantage of the observational results of Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS). We find that for the WIMPs mass range $1\le m_χ\le 1000~\rm GeV$, the upper limits on the abundance of PBHs are $5\times 10^{-3}\le Ω_{\rm PBH}\le 5\times 10^{-2}$.

Excitonic Bloch-Siegert shift in CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dots

Coherent interaction between matter and periodic light field induces both optical Stark effect (OSE) and Bloch-Siegert shift (BSS). Observing the BSS has been historically challenging, not only because it is weak but it is often accompanied by a much stronger OSE. Herein, by controlling the light helicity, we can largely restrict the OSE and BSS to different spin-transitions in CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dots, achieving room-temperature BSS as strong as 4 meV with near-infrared pulses. The ratio between the BSS and OSE magnitudes is however systematically higher than the prediction by the non-interacting, quasi-particle picture. With a model that explicitly accounts for excitonic effects, we quantitatively reproduce the experimental observations. This model depicts a unified physical picture of the interplay between the OSE, biexcitonic OSE and BSS in low-dimensional materials displaying strong many-body interactions, forming the basis for the implementation of these effects to information processing, optical modulation and Floquet engineering.

Influences of accreting primordial black holes on the global 21 cm signal in the dark ages

Baryonic matter can be accreted on to primordial back holes (PBHs) formed in the early Universe. The radiation from accreting PBHs is capable of altering the evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM), leaving marks on the global 21 cm signal in the dark ages. For accreting PBHs with mass $M_{\rm PBH}=10^{3}(10^{4})~M_{\odot}$ and mass fraction $f_{\rm PBH}=10^{-1}(10^{-3})$, the brightness temperature deviation $ΔδT_{b}$ reaches $\sim 18~(26)~\rm mK$ at redshift $z\sim 90$ ($ν\sim 16~\rm MHz$), and the gradient of the brightness temperature $dδT_{b}/dν$ reaches $ \sim 0.8~(0.5)~\rm mK~MHz^{-1}$ at frequency $ν\sim 28~\rm MHz$ ($z\sim 50$). For larger PBHs with higher mass fraction, the brightness temperature deviation is larger in the redshift range $z\sim 30-300$ ($ν\sim 5-46~\rm MHz$), and the gradient is lower at the frequency range $ν\sim 20-60~\rm MHz$ ($z\sim 23-70$). It is impossible to detect these low frequency radio signals from the Earth due to the influence of the Earth's ionosphere. However, after taking care of the essential factors properly, e.g. the foreground and interference, future radio telescope in lunar orbit or on the farside surface of the Moon has a chance of detecting the global 21 cm signals impacted by accreting PBHs and distinguishing them from the standard model.

Constraints on accreting primordial black holes with the global 21-cm signal

We investigate the effect of accreting primordial black holes (PBHs) on the thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM), including the accretion of baryonic matter and dark matter particles. The variations of the thermal history of the IGM caused by accreting PBHs will result in the changes of the global 21-cm signal in the cosmic dawn. Based on the detection of the global 21-cm signal by EDGES, by requiring the differential brightness temperature, e.g., $δT_{21} \lesssim -100~(-50)~\rm mK$, we obtain the upper limits on the abundance of PBHs for the mass range $10\lesssim M_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{4}~M_{\odot}$. Compared with previous works, the limits are stronger for the mass range $10\lesssim M_{\rm PBH}\lesssim 50~M_{\odot}$.

Learning-to-Dispatch: Reinforcement Learning Based Flight Planning under Emergency

The effectiveness of resource allocation under emergencies especially hurricane disasters is crucial. However, most researchers focus on emergency resource allocation in a ground transportation system. In this paper, we propose Learning-to-Dispatch (L2D), a reinforcement learning (RL) based air route dispatching system, that aims to add additional flights for hurricane evacuation while minimizing the airspace's complexity and air traffic controller's workload. Given a bipartite graph with weights that are learned from the historical flight data using RL in consideration of short- and long-term gains, we formulate the flight dispatch as an online maximum weight matching problem. Different from the conventional order dispatch problem, there is no actual or estimated index that can evaluate how the additional evacuation flights influence the air traffic complexity. Then we propose a multivariate reward function in the learning phase and compare it with other univariate reward designs to show its superior performance. The experiments using the real-world dataset for Hurricane Irma demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of our proposed schema.

Constraints on primordial black holes and curvature perturbations from the global 21cm signal

The recent observations of the global 21cm signal by EDGES and gravitational waves by LIGO/VIGO have revived interest in PBHs. Different from previous works, we investigate the influence of PBHs on the evolution of the IGM for the mass range $6\times 10^{13} {\rm g} \lesssim M_{\rm PBH}\lesssim 3\times 10^{14} \rm g$. Since the lifetime of these PBHs is smaller than the present age of the Universe, they have evaporated by the present day. Due to Hawking radiation, the heating effects of PBHs on the IGM can suppress the absorption amplitude of the global 21cm signal. In this work, by requiring that the differential brightness temperature of the global 21cm signals in the redshift range of $10\lesssim z \lesssim 30$, e.g., $δT_{b} \lesssim -100~\rm mK$, we obtain upper limits on the initial mass fraction of PBHs. We find that the strongest upper limit is $β_{\rm PBH} \sim 2\times 10^{-30}$. Since the formation of PBHs is related to primordial curvature perturbations, by using the constraints on the initial mass fraction of PBHs we obtain the upper limits on the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations for the scale range $8.0\times 10^{15}\lesssim k \lesssim 1.8\times 10^{16}~\rm Mpc^{-1}$, corresponding to the mass range considered here. We find that the strongest upper limit is $\mathcal P_{\mathcal R}(k) \sim 0.0046$. By comparing with previous works, we find that for the mass range (or the scale range) investigated in this work the global 21cm signals or the 21cm power spectrum should give the strongest upper limits on the initial mass fraction of PBHs and on the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations.

The abundance of primordial black holes from the global 21cm signal and extragalactic gamma-ray background

Primordial black holes (PBHs) formed in the early Universe can accret dark matter particles due to gravity and form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs). The theoretical researches and simulations have shown that the density profile of dark matter in UCMHs is in the form of $ρ(r) \sim r^{-2.25}$. Compared with the popular dark matter halo model, e.g. NFW model, dark matter annihilation rate is larger in UCMHs. Considering dark matter annihilation, there is a maximum core density $ρ_{\rm max}$ in UCMHs which has been treated independent on redshift. While in this work, we point out that $ρ_{\rm max}$ depends on redshift and dark matter annihilation rate in UCMHs also changes with time. We re-investigate the $γ$-ray flux from UCMHs due to dark matter annihilation and focus on their contributions to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB). Utilizing the EGB data of Fermi, the constraints on the abundance of PBHs are derived, $Ω_{\rm PBH,EGB} \lesssim 2\times 10^{-8}$. Motivated by the recent observations of global 21cm signals by the EDGES experiment, we investigate the influences of dark matter annihilation in UCMHs on global 21cm signals and derive the constraints on the abundance of PBHs, $Ω_{\rm PBH,21cm} \lesssim 2\times 10^{-10}$. The derived constraints are valid for mass range of $10^{-6} M_{\odot} \lesssim M_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{3} M_{\odot}$.

Constraints on the small scale curvature perturbation using Planck-2015 data

The particles emitted from PBHs through the Hawking radiation have interactions with the particles present in the Universe. Due to the interactions, the evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM) is changed and the changes have imprints on the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this paper, we focus on the PBHs with the lifetime in the range of $10^{13}s \lesssim τ_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{17}s$, corresponding to the mass range of $2.8\times 10^{13}\mathrm{g} \lesssim M_{\mathrm{PBH}} \lesssim 2.5\times 10^{14}\mathrm{g}$. We update the constraints on the initial mass fraction of PBHs using the Plank-2015 data. We find that the optimistic upper limits are $4\times 10^{-29}\lesssim β(M_{\mathrm{PBH}}) \lesssim 5\times 10^{-28}$, depending on the mass of PBH. The formation of PBHs is related to the primordial curvature perturbations. Therefore, using the constraints on the initial mass fraction of PBHs, we get the upper limits on the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation. For the investigated mass range of PBHs, corresponding to the range of scales $8.9 \times 10^{15}\ \mathrm{Mpc^{-1}}\lesssim k \lesssim 2.8 \times 10^{16}\ \mathrm{Mpc^{-1}}$, we find that the upper limits change slightly with a value of $\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{R}(k) \sim 0.0045$, and the limits are slightly stronger compared with the previous results.
