Enhancing Multistep Prediction of Multivariate Market Indices Using Weighted Optical Reservoir Computing

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an innovative stock index prediction method using a weighted optical reservoir computing system. We construct fundamental market data combined with macroeconomic data and technical indicators to capture the broader behavior of the stock market. Our approach shows significant higher performance than state-of-the-art methods such as linear regression, decision trees, and neural network architectures including long short-term memory. It captures well the market's high volatility and nonlinear behaviors despite limited data, demonstrating great potential for real-time, parallel, multi-dimensional data processing and predictions.

Score-based Generative Priors Guided Model-driven Network for MRI Reconstruction

Score matching with Langevin dynamics (SMLD) method has been successfully applied to accelerated MRI. However, the hyperparameters in the sampling process require subtle tuning, otherwise the results can be severely corrupted by hallucination artifacts, especially with out-of-distribution test data. To address the limitations, we proposed a novel workflow where naive SMLD samples serve as additional priors to guide model-driven network training. First, we adopted a pretrained score network to generate samples as preliminary guidance images (PGI), obviating the need for network retraining, parameter tuning and in-distribution test data. Although PGIs are corrupted by hallucination artifacts, we believe they can provide extra information through effective denoising steps to facilitate reconstruction. Therefore, we designed a denoising module (DM) in the second step to coarsely eliminate artifacts and noises from PGIs. The features are extracted from a score-based information extractor (SIE) and a cross-domain information extractor (CIE), which directly map to the noise patterns. Third, we designed a model-driven network guided by denoised PGIs (DGIs) to further recover fine details. DGIs are densely connected with intermediate reconstructions in each cascade to enrich the information and are periodically updated to provide more accurate guidance. Our experiments on different datasets reveal that despite the low average quality of PGIs, the proposed workflow can effectively extract valuable information to guide the network training, even with severely reduced training data and sampling steps. Our method outperforms other cutting-edge techniques by effectively mitigating hallucination artifacts, yielding robust and high-quality reconstruction results.

Deep Synoptic Array science I: discovery of the host galaxy of FRB 20220912A

We report the detection and interferometric localization of the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20220912A during commissioning observations with the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA-110). Two bursts were detected from FRB 20220912A, one each on 2022 October 18 and 2022 October 25. The best-fit position is (R.A. J2000, decl. J2000) = (23:09:04.9, +48:42:25.4), with a 90% confidence error ellipse of $\pm2$ arcsec and $\pm1$ arcsec in right ascension and declination respectively. The two bursts have disparate polarization properties and temporal profiles. We find a Faraday rotation measure that is consistent with the low value of $+0.6$ rad m$^{-2}$ reported by CHIME/FRB. The DSA-110 localization overlaps with the galaxy PSO J347.2702+48.7066 at a redshift $z=0.0771$, which we identify as the likely host. PSO J347.2702$+$48.7066 has a stellar mass of approximately $10^{10}M_{\odot}$, modest internal dust extinction, and a star-formation rate likely in excess of $0.1\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The host-galaxy contribution to the dispersion measure is likely $\lesssim50$ pc cm$^{-3}$. The FRB 20220912A source is therefore likely viewed along a tenuous plasma column through the host galaxy.

Observation of Distinct Phase Transitions in a Nonlinear Optical Ising Machine

Optical Ising machines promise to solve complex optimization problems with an optical hardware acceleration advantage. Here we study the ground state properties of a nonlinear optical Ising machine realized by spatial light modulator, Fourier optics, and second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal. By tuning the ratio of the light intensities at the fundamental and second harmonic frequencies, we experimentally observe two distinct ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transitions: a second-order phase transition where the magnetization changes to zero continuously and a first-order phase transition where the magnetization drops to zero abruptly as the effective temperature increases. Our experimental results are corroborated by a numerical simulation based on the Monte Carlo Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, and the physical mechanism for the distinct phase transitions can be understood with a mean-field theory. Our results showcase the great flexibility of the nonlinear optical Ising machine, which may find important potential applications in solving combinatorial optimization problems.

Photon-pair generation in a heterogeneous silicon photonic chip

Integrated Silicon photonics has played an important role in advancing the applications of quantum information and quantum science. However, due to different material properties, it is challenging to integrate all components with excellent performance based on homogeneous material. Here, by combining high nonlinearity and low losses in a heterogeneous silicon platform, we efficiently generate high-quality photon pairs through spontaneous four-wave mixing in hydrogenated amorphous silicon waveguide and route them off-chip through low loss silicon nitride waveguide. A record high coincidence- to- accidental rate value of 1632.6 ($\pm$ 260.4) is achieved in this heterogeneous design with a photon pair generation rate of 1.94 MHz. We also showcase a wide range of multi-channel photon sources with coincidence- to- accidental rate consistently at 200. Lastly, we measure heralded single-photons with a lowest $g^{(2)}_H(0)$ of 0.1085 $\pm$ 0.0014. Our results demonstrate the heterogeneous silicon platform as an ideal platform for efficient generation of photon pairs and routing them off-chip with low losses. It also paves a way for the future hybrid photonic integrated circuit by collecting distinct features from different materials.

A Matched Survey for the Enigmatic Low Radio Frequency Transient ILT J225347+862146

Discovered in 2011 with LOFAR, the $15$ Jy low-frequency radio transient ILT J225347+862146 heralds a potentially prolific population of radio transients at $<100$ MHz. However, subsequent transient searches in similar parameter space yielded no detections. We test the hypothesis that these surveys at comparable sensitivity have missed the population due to mismatched survey parameters. In particular, the LOFAR survey used only $195$ kHz of bandwidth at $60$ MHz while other survey were at higher frequencies or had wider bandwidth. Using $137$ hours of all-sky images from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA), we conduct a narrowband transient search at $\sim10$ Jy sensitivity with timescales from $10$ min to $1$ day and a bandwidth of $722$ kHz at $60$ MHz. To model remaining survey selection effects, we introduce a flexible Bayesian approach for inferring transient rates. We do not detect any transient and find compelling evidence that our non-detection is inconsistent with the detection of ILT J225347+862146. Under the assumption that the transient is astrophysical, we propose two hypotheses that may explain our non-detection. First, the transient population associated with ILT J225347+862146 may have a low all-sky density and display strong temporal clustering. Second, ILT J225347+862146 may be an extreme instance of the fluence distribution, of which we revise the surface density estimate at $15$ Jy to $1.1\times 10^{-7}$ deg$^{-2}$ with a $95\%$ credible interval of $(3.5\times10^{-12}, 3.4\times10^{-7})$ deg$^{-2}$. Finally, we find a previously identified object coincident with ILT J225347+862146 to be an M dwarf at $420$ pc.

A trustless decentralized protocol for distributed consensus of public quantum random numbers

Quantum random number (QRNG) beacons distinguish themselves from classical counterparts by providing intrinsic unpredictability originating from the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. Most demonstrations have focused on certifiable randomness generators to guarantee the public that their genuineness is independent from imperfect implementations. These efforts however do not benefit applications where multiple distrusted users need a common set of random numbers, as they must rely on the honesty of beacon owners. In this paper, we formally introduce a design and proof-of-principle experiment of the first consensus protocol producing QRNs in a decentralized environment (dQRNG). Such protocol allows N number of participants contribute in the generation process and publicly verify numbers they collect. Security of the protocol is guaranteed given(N-1) dishonest participants. Our method is thus suited for distribute systems that requires a bias-resistant, highly secure, and public-verifiable random beacon.

Photon Conversion in Thin-film Lithium Niobate Nanowaveguides: A Noise Analysis

Wavelength transduction of single-photon signals is indispensable to networked quantum applications, particularly those incorporating quantum memories. Lithium niobate nanophotonic devices have demonstrated favorable linear, nonlinear, and electro-optical properties to deliver this crucial function while offering superiror efficiency, integrability, and scalability. Yet, their quantum noise level--an crucial metric for any single-photon based application--has yet to be understood. In this work, we report the first study with the focus on telecom to near-visible conversion driven by a telecom pump of small detuning, for practical considerations in distributed quantum processing over fiber networks. Our results find the noise level to be on the order of $10^{-4}$ photons per time-frequency mode for high conversion, allowing faithful pulsed operations. Through carefully analyzing the origins of such noise and each's dependence on the pump power and wavelength detuning, we have also identified a formula for noise suppression to $10^{-5}$ photons per mode. Our results assert a viable, low-cost, and modular approach to networked quantum processing and beyond using lithium niobate nanophotonics.

Robust and Efficient Single-Pixel Image Classificationwith Nonlinear Optics

We present a hybrid image classifier by mode-selective image upconversion, single pixel photodetection, and deep learning, aiming at fast processing a large number of pixels. It utilizes partial Fourier transform to extract the signature features of images in both the original and Fourier domains, thereby significantly increasing the classification accuracy and robustness. Tested on the MNIST handwritten digit images, it boosts the accuracy from 81.25% to 99.23%, and achieves an 83% accuracy for highly contaminated images whose signal-to-noise ratio is only -17 dB. Our approach could prove useful for fast lidar data processing, high resolution image recognition, occluded target identification, atmosphere monitoring, and so on.

Single-Pixel Pattern Recognition with Coherent Nonlinear Optics

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a nonlinear-optics approach to pattern recognition with single-pixel imaging and deep neural network. It employs mode selective image up-conversion to project a raw image onto a set of coherent spatial modes, whereby its signature features are extracted nonlinear-optically. With 40 projection modes, the classification accuracy reaches a high value of 99.49% for the MNIST handwritten digit images, and up to 95.32% even when they are mixed with strong noise. Our experiment harnesses rich coherent processes in nonlinear optics for efficient machine learning, with potential applications in online classification of large size images, fast lidar data analyses, complex pattern recognition, and so on.

Anti-Parity-Time Symmetry in Passive Nanophotonics

Parity-time (PT) symmetry in non-Hermitian optical systems promises distinct optical effects and applications not found in conservative optics. Its counterpart, anti-PT symmetry, subscribes another class of intriguing optical phenomena and implies complementary techniques for exotic light manipulation. Despite exciting progress, so far anti-PT symmetry has only been realized in bulky systems or with optical gain. Here, we report an on-chip realization of non-Hermitian optics with anti-PT symmetry, by using a fully-passive, nanophotonic platform consisting of three evanescently coupled waveguides. By depositing a metal film on the center waveguide to introduce strong loss, an anti-PT system is realized. Using microheaters to tune the waveguides' refractive indices, striking behaviors are observed such as equal power splitting, synchronized amplitude modulation, phase-controlled dissipation, and transition from anti-PT symmetry to its broken phase. Our results highlight exotic anti-Hermitian nanophotonics to be consolidated with conventional circuits on the same chip, whereby valuable chip devices can be created for quantum optics studies and scalable information processing.

High-dimensional temporal mode propagation in a turbulent environment

Temporal modes of photonic quantum states provide a new framework to develop a robust free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) scheme in a maritime environment. We show that the high-dimensional temporal modes can be used to fulfill a persistent communication channel to achieve high photon-efficiency even in severe weather conditions. We identify the parameter regimes that allow for a high-fidelity quantum information transmission. We also examine how the turbulent environment affects fidelity and entanglement degree in various environmental settings.

Quantum Systems for Monte Carlo Methods and Applications to Fractional Stochastic Processes

Random numbers are a fundamental and useful resource in science and engineering with important applications in simulation, machine learning and cyber-security. Quantum systems can produce true random numbers because of the inherent randomness at the core of quantum mechanics. As a consequence, quantum random number generators are an efficient method to generate random numbers on a large scale. We study in this paper the applications of a viable source of unbiased quantum random numbers (QRNs) whose statistical properties can be arbitrarily programmed without the need for any post-processing and that pass all standard randomness tests of the NIST and Dieharder test suites without any randomness extraction. Our method is based on measuring the arrival time of single photons in shaped temporal modes that are tailored with an electro-optical modulator. The advantages of our QRNs are shown via two applications: simulation of a fractional Brownian motion, which is a non-Markovian process, and option pricing under the fractional SABR model where the stochastic volatility process is assumed to be driven by a fractional Brownian motion. The results indicate that using the same number of random units, our QRNs achieve greater accuracy than those produced by standard pseudo-random number generators. Moreover, we demonstrate the advantages of our method via an increase in computational speed, efficiency, and convergence.

Relativistic Measurements from Timing the Binary Pulsar PSR B1913+16

We present relativistic analyses of 9257 measurements of times-of-arrival from the first binary pulsar, PSR B1913+16, acquired over the last thirty-five years. The determination of the 'Keplerian' orbital elements plus two relativistic terms completely characterizes the binary system, aside from an unknown rotation about the line of sight; leading to a determination of the masses of the pulsar and its companion: 1.438 $\pm$ 0.001 solar masses and 1.390 $\pm$ 0.001 solar masses, respectively. In addition, the complete system characterization allows the creation of tests of relativistic gravitation by comparing measured and predicted sizes of various relativistic phenomena. We find that the ratio of observed orbital period decrease due to gravitational wave damping (corrected by a kinematic term) to the general relativistic prediction, is 0.9983 pm 0.0016; thereby confirming the existence and strength of gravitational radiation as predicted by general relativity. For the first time in this system, we have also successfully measured the two parameters characterizing the Shapiro gravitational propagation delay, and find that their values are consistent with general relativistic predictions. We have also measured for the first time in any system the relativistic shape correction to the elliptical orbit, $δ_θ$,although its intrinsic value is obscured by currently unquantified pulsar emission beam aberration. We have also marginally measured the time derivative of the projected semimajor axis, which, when improved in combination with beam aberration modelling from geodetic precession observations, should ultimately constrain the pulsar's moment of inertia.

Resonant Matter Wave Amplification in Mean Field Theory

We develop a Green's function based mean-field theory for coherent mixing of matter- and light-waves. To demonstrate the utility of this approach, we analyse a co-propagating Raman matter-wave amplifier. We find that for a given laser intensity, a significantly faster amplification process can be achieved employing resonant rather than off-resonance driving. The ratio of the matter-wave gain to atom loss-rate due to spontaneous emission is given by the optical depth of the sample, and is the same both on- and off-resonance. Furthermore, we show that for short-times, the single-mode approximation for the matter-waves gives exact agreement with the full spatial dynamics. For long times, the off-resonant case shows suppressed amplification due to a spatially inhomogenous AC Stark shift associated with laser depletion. This suppression is absent on-resonance, where the AC Stark shift is absent.
