A benchmark dataset for evaluating Syndrome Differentiation and Treatment in large language models

The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) within the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) domain presents an urgent need to assess their clinical application capabilities. However, such evaluations are challenged by the individualized, holistic, and diverse nature of TCM's "Syndrome Differentiation and Treatment" (SDT). Existing benchmarks are confined to knowledge-based question-answering or the accuracy of syndrome differentiation, often neglecting assessment of treatment decision-making. Here, we propose a comprehensive, clinical case-based benchmark spearheaded by TCM experts, and a specialized reward model employed to quantify prescription-syndrome congruence. Data annotation follows a rigorous pipeline. This benchmark, designated TCM-BEST4SDT, encompasses four tasks, including TCM Basic Knowledge, Medical Ethics, LLM Content Safety, and SDT. The evaluation framework integrates three mechanisms, namely selected-response evaluation, judge model evaluation, and reward model evaluation. The effectiveness of TCM-BEST4SDT was corroborated through experiments on 15 mainstream LLMs, spanning both general and TCM domains. To foster the development of intelligent TCM research, TCM-BEST4SDT is now publicly available.

Successive Cancellation Decoding For General Monotone Chain Polar Codes

Monotone chain polar codes generalize classical polar codes to multivariate settings, offering a flexible approach for achieving the entire admissible rate region in the distributed lossless coding problem. However, this flexibility also introduces significant challenges for existing successive cancellation (SC) based decoding schemes. Motivated by the need for a general SC decoding solution, we present a comprehensive decoding strategy for monotone chain polar codes that can handle arbitrary numbers of terminals, non-binary alphabets, and decoding along arbitrary monotone chains. Specifically, we formulate the SC decoding task as a series of inference subtasks over the polar transform and propose a computational graph framework based on probability propagation principles. This approach highlights the impact of variable switching during decoding and shows that time complexity varies between $O(N\log{N})$ and $O(N^2)$, depending on the specific chain structure. Moreover, we demonstrate that the widely used $O(N)$ space optimization is not universally applicable to monotone chain polar codes, which prompts us to introduce a constant-time decoder forking strategy based on the proposed logical computation graphs. This strategy enables time-efficient list decoding without relying on $O(N)$-space techniques. Numerical results verify the superior performance of the proposed scheme compared with the classical lazy-copy scheme.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for Movable Antenna-Aided Communication Systems

This paper investigates the energy efficiency optimization for movable antenna (MA) systems by considering the time delay and energy consumption introduced by MA movement. We first derive the upper bound on energy efficiency for a single-user downlink communication system, where the user is equipped with a single MA. Then, the energy efficiency maximization problem is formulated to optimize the MA position, and an efficient algorithm based on successive convex approximation is proposed to solve this non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that, despite the overhead caused by MA movement, the MA system can still improve the energy efficiency compared to the conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) system.

Energy Efficiency Maximization for Movable Antenna Communication Systems

This paper investigates energy efficiency maximization for movable antenna (MA)-aided multi-user uplink communication systems by considering the time delay and energy consumption incurred by practical antenna movement. We first examine the special case with a single user and propose an optimization algorithm based on the one-dimensional (1D) exhaustive search to maximize the user's energy efficiency. Moreover, we derive an upper bound on the energy efficiency and analyze the conditions required to achieve this performance bound under different numbers of channel paths. Then, for the general multi-user scenario, we propose an iterative algorithm to fairly maximize the minimum energy efficiency among all users. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in improving energy efficiency compared to existing MA schemes that do not account for movement-related costs, as well as the conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) scheme. In addition, the results show the robustness of the proposed scheme to imperfect channel state information (CSI) and provide valuable insights for practical system deployment.

TCM-3CEval: A Triaxial Benchmark for Assessing Responses from Large Language Models in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Large language models (LLMs) excel in various NLP tasks and modern medicine, but their evaluation in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is underexplored. To address this, we introduce TCM3CEval, a benchmark assessing LLMs in TCM across three dimensions: core knowledge mastery, classical text understanding, and clinical decision-making. We evaluate diverse models, including international (e.g., GPT-4o), Chinese (e.g., InternLM), and medical-specific (e.g., PLUSE). Results show a performance hierarchy: all models have limitations in specialized subdomains like Meridian & Acupoint theory and Various TCM Schools, revealing gaps between current capabilities and clinical needs. Models with Chinese linguistic and cultural priors perform better in classical text interpretation and clinical reasoning. TCM-3CEval sets a standard for AI evaluation in TCM, offering insights for optimizing LLMs in culturally grounded medical domains. The benchmark is available on Medbench's TCM track, aiming to assess LLMs' TCM capabilities in basic knowledge, classic texts, and clinical decision-making through multidimensional questions and real cases.

Entropy Polarization-Based Data Compression Without Frozen Set Construction

Classical source polar codes require the construction of frozen sets for given sources. While this scheme offers excellent theoretical performance, it faces challenges in practical data compression systems, including sensitivity to the accuracy and computational complexity of the construction algorithm. In this letter, we explore the feasibility of construction-free polar compression schemes. By optimally selecting output symbols based on the decoder's behavior, the proposed scheme not only enhances flexibility but also achieves significant improvements in compression rates. Several enhancements are introduced to facilitate the practical implementation of the proposed scheme. Numerical results demonstrate the superior performance compared to existing polar compression approaches.

Harnessing the Power of AI-Generated Content for Semantic Communication

Semantic Communication (SemCom) is envisaged as the next-generation paradigm to address challenges stemming from the conflicts between the increasing volume of transmission data and the scarcity of spectrum resources. However, existing SemCom systems face drawbacks, such as low explainability, modality rigidity, and inadequate reconstruction functionality. Recognizing the transformative capabilities of AI-generated content (AIGC) technologies in content generation, this paper explores a pioneering approach by integrating them into SemCom to address the aforementioned challenges. We employ a three-layer model to illustrate the proposed AIGC-assisted SemCom (AIGC-SCM) architecture, emphasizing its clear deviation from existing SemCom. Grounded in this model, we investigate various AIGC technologies with the potential to augment SemCom's performance. In alignment with SemCom's goal of conveying semantic meanings, we also introduce the new evaluation methods for our AIGC-SCM system. Subsequently, we explore communication scenarios where our proposed AIGC-SCM can realize its potential. For practical implementation, we construct a detailed integration workflow and conduct a case study in a virtual reality image transmission scenario. The results demonstrate our ability to maintain a high degree of alignment between the reconstructed content and the original source information, while substantially minimizing the data volume required for transmission. These findings pave the way for further enhancements in communication efficiency and the improvement of Quality of Service. At last, we present future directions for AIGC-SCM studies.

STAR-RIS-Assisted Privacy Protection in Semantic Communication System

Semantic communication (SemCom) has emerged as a promising architecture in the realm of intelligent communication paradigms. SemCom involves extracting and compressing the core information at the transmitter while enabling the receiver to interpret it based on established knowledge bases (KBs). This approach enhances communication efficiency greatly. However, the open nature of wireless transmission and the presence of homogeneous KBs among subscribers of identical data type pose a risk of privacy leakage in SemCom. To address this challenge, we propose to leverage the simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) to achieve privacy protection in a SemCom system. In this system, the STAR-RIS is utilized to enhance the signal transmission of the SemCom between a base station and a destination user, as well as to covert the signal to interference specifically for the eavesdropper (Eve). Simulation results demonstrate that our generated task-level disturbance outperforms other benchmarks in protecting SemCom privacy, as evidenced by the significantly lower task success rate achieved by Eve.

Active RIS-Assisted mmWave Indoor Signal Enhancement Based on Transparent RIS

Due to the serious path loss of millimeter-wave (mmWave), the signal sent by the base station is seriously attenuated when it reaches the indoors. Recent studies have proposed a glass-based metasurface that can enhance mmWave indoor signals. The transparent reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) focuses on the mmWave signal to a specific location indoors. In this paper, a novel RIS-assisted mmWave indoor enhancement scheme is proposed, in which a transparent RIS is deployed on the glass to enhance mmWave indoor signals, and three assisted transmission scenarios, namely passive RIS (PRIS), active RIS (ARIS), and a novel hybrid RIS (HRIS) are proposed. This paper aims to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signal for the three assisted transmission scenarios. The closed-form solution to the maximum SNR is presented in the PRIS and the ARIS-assisted transmission scenarios. Meanwhile, the closed-form solution to the maximum SNR for the HRIS-assisted transmission scenario is presented for given active unit cells. In addition, the performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed under three assisted transmission scenarios. The results indicate that under a specific RIS power budget, the ARIS-assisted transmission scenario achieves the highest data rate and energy efficiency. Also, it requires very few unit cells, thus dramatically reducing the size of the metasurface.

mmWave RIS Phase Shift Feedback Based on Knowledge Base Autoencoder Framework

In reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted wireless communication systems, adjusting the phase shift of RIS unit cells is crucial for improving communication performance. Due to massive RIS unit cells, the number of phase shift parameters fed back from the base station (BS) to the RIS is enormous, which occupies a large number of frequency resources. In this paper, we propose a feedback scheme for millimeter-wave RIS phase shift applying a knowledge base autoencoder framework, in which the learnable knowledge base is shared at the BS and the RIS. The encoder at the BS compresses the RIS phase shift matrix to multiple feature vectors. Then the knowledge base vectors index is obtained by calculating the similarity between feature vectors and knowledge base vectors and transmitted to the RIS. With utilizing the index at the RIS, the corresponding knowledge base vectors are extracted and used as the decoder's inputs to reconstruct the phase shift of the RIS. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the accuracy of phase shift feedback and impressively reduce the amount of RIS phase shift feedback data. Moreover, the proposed scheme is easy to deploy in actual scenarios due to lower complexity and fewer parameters.

Secure Wireless Transmission for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Full Duplex Systems

This letter considers the secure communication in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided full duplex (FD) system. An FD base station (BS) serves an uplink (UL) user and a downlink (DL) user simultaneously over the same time-frequency dimension assisted by a RIS in the presence of an eavesdropper. In addition, the artificial noise (AN) is also applied to interfere the eavesdropper's channel. We aim to maximize the sum secrecy rate of UL and DL users by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming, receive beamforming and AN covariance matrix at the BS, and passive beamforming at the RIS. To handle the non-convex problem, we decompose it into tractable subproblems and propose an efficient algorithm based on alternating optimization framework. Specifically, the receive beamforming is derived as a closed-form solution while other variables are obtained by using semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method and successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed scheme compared to other baseline schemes.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Energy Efficiency in Full-duplex Communication System

In this letter, we study the reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) aided full-duplex (FD) communication system. By jointly designing the active beamforming of two multi-antenna sources and passive beamforming of RIS, we aim to maximize the energy efficiency of the system, where extra self-interference cancellation power consumption in FD system is also considered. We divide the optimization problem into active and passive beamforming design subproblems, and adopt the alternative optimization framework to solve them iteratively. Dinkelbach's method is used to tackle the fractional objective function in active beamforming problem. Penalty method and successive convex approximation are exploited for passive beamforming design. Simulation results show the energy efficiency of our scheme outperforms other benchmarks.

Simultaneous Transmission and Reflection Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Full-Duplex Communications

This work demonstrates the effectiveness of a novel simultaneous transmission and reflection reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) in Full-Duplex (FD) aided communication system. The objective is to minimize the total transmit power by jointly designing the transmit power and the transmitting and reflecting (T&R) coefficients of the STAR-RIS. To solve the nonconvex problem, an efficient algorithm is proposed by utilizing the alternating optimization framework to iteratively optimize variables. Specifically, in each iteration, we drive the closed-form expression for the optimal power design. The successive convex approximation (SCA) method and semidefinite program (SDP) are used to solve the passive beamforming optimization problem. Numerical results verify the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and further reveal in which scenarios STAR-RIS assisted FD communication defeats the Half-Duplex and conventional RIS.

Performance Analysis and Codebook Design for mmWave Beamforming System with Beam Squint

Beamforming technology is widely used in millimeter wave systems to combat path losses, and beamformers are usually selected from a predefined codebook. Unfortunately, the traditional codebook design neglects the beam squint effect, and this will cause severe performance degradation when the bandwidth is large. In this letter, we consider that a codebook with fixed size is adopted in the wideband beamforming system. First, we analyze how beam squint affects system performance when all beams have the same width. The expression of average spectrum efficiency is derived based on the ideal beam pattern. Next, we formulate the optimization problem to design the optimal codebook. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed codebook deals with beam squint by spreading the beam coverage and significantly mitigates the performance degradation.

Fast List Decoders for Polarization-Adjusted Convolutional (PAC) Codes

A latest coding scheme named polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes is shown to approach the dispersion bound for the code (128,64) under list decoding. However, to achieve the near-bound performance, the list size of list decoding needs to be excessively large, which leads to insufferable latency. In this paper, to improve the speed of list decoding, fast list decoders for PAC codes are proposed. We define four types of constituent nodes and provide fast list decoding algorithms for each of them. Simulation results present that fast list decoding with three types of constituent nodes can yield exactly the same error-correction performance as list decoding, and reduce more than 50% time steps for the code (128,64). Moreover, fast list decoding with four types of constituent nodes can further reduce decoding latency with negligible performance degradation.

We propose a nonuniform quantized decoder for polar codes. The design metric of the quantizers is to minimize the distortion incurred by quantization. The quantizers are obtained via dynamic programming and the optimality of the quantizer is proved as well. Simulation results show that the error correction performance degradation of the proposed nonuniform quantized decoder is less than 0.1 dB compared to conventional float-point decoders under 5-bit nonuniform quantization, outperforming previous uniform quantized decoders for polar codes significantly.

Learning to Denoise and Decode: A Novel Residual Neural Network Decoder for Polar Codes

Polar codes have been adopted as the control channel coding scheme in the fifth generation new radio (5G NR) standard due to its capacity-achievable property. Traditional polar decoding algorithms such as successive cancellation (SC) suffer from high latency problem because of their sequential decoding nature. Neural network decoder (NND) has been proved to be a candidate for polar decoder since it is capable of oneshot decoding and parallel computing. Whereas, the bit-errorrate (BER) performance of NND is still inferior to that of SC algorithm. In this paper, we propose a residual neural network decoder (RNND) for polar codes. Different from previous works which directly use neural network for decoding symbols received from the channel, the proposed RNND introduces a denoising module based on residual learning before NND. The proposed residual learning denoiser is able to remove remarkable amount of noise from received signals. Numerical results show that our proposed RNND outperforms traditional NND with regard to the BER performance under comparable latency.
