Single-shot Hyperspectral-Depth Imaging with Learned Diffractive Optics

Imaging depth and spectrum have been extensively studied in isolation from each other for decades. Recently, hyperspectral-depth (HS-D) imaging emerges to capture both information simultaneously by combining two different imaging systems; one for depth, the other for spectrum. While being accurate, this combinational approach induces increased form factor, cost, capture time, and alignment/registration problems. In this work, departing from the combinational principle, we propose a compact single-shot monocular HS-D imaging method. Our method uses a diffractive optical element (DOE), the point spread function of which changes with respect to both depth and spectrum. This enables us to reconstruct spectrum and depth from a single captured image. To this end, we develop a differentiable simulator and a neural-network-based reconstruction that are jointly optimized via automatic differentiation. To facilitate learning the DOE, we present a first HS-D dataset by building a benchtop HS-D imager that acquires high-quality ground truth. We evaluate our method with synthetic and real experiments by building an experimental prototype and achieve state-of-the-art HS-D imaging results.

A Set-Theoretic Study of the Relationships of Image Models and Priors for Restoration Problems

Image prior modeling is the key issue in image recovery, computational imaging, compresses sensing, and other inverse problems. Recent algorithms combining multiple effective priors such as the sparse or low-rank models, have demonstrated superior performance in various applications. However, the relationships among the popular image models are unclear, and no theory in general is available to demonstrate their connections. In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis on the image models, to bridge the gap between applications and image prior understanding, including sparsity, group-wise sparsity, joint sparsity, and low-rankness, etc. We systematically study how effective each image model is for image restoration. Furthermore, we relate the denoising performance improvement by combining multiple models, to the image model relationships. Extensive experiments are conducted to compare the denoising results which are consistent with our analysis. On top of the model-based methods, we quantitatively demonstrate the image properties that are inexplicitly exploited by deep learning method, of which can further boost the denoising performance by combining with its complementary image models.

Short-Term Temporal Convolutional Networks for Dynamic Hand Gesture Recognition

The purpose of gesture recognition is to recognize meaningful movements of human bodies, and gesture recognition is an important issue in computer vision. In this paper, we present a multimodal gesture recognition method based on 3D densely convolutional networks (3D-DenseNets) and improved temporal convolutional networks (TCNs). The key idea of our approach is to find a compact and effective representation of spatial and temporal features, which orderly and separately divide task of gesture video analysis into two parts: spatial analysis and temporal analysis. In spatial analysis, we adopt 3D-DenseNets to learn short-term spatio-temporal features effectively. Subsequently, in temporal analysis, we use TCNs to extract temporal features and employ improved Squeeze-and-Excitation Networks (SENets) to strengthen the representational power of temporal features from each TCNs' layers. The method has been evaluated on the VIVA and the NVIDIA Gesture Dynamic Hand Gesture Datasets. Our approach obtains very competitive performance on VIVA benchmarks with the classification accuracies of 91.54%, and achieve state-of-the art performance with 86.37% accuracy on NVIDIA benchmark.

GAN-based Projector for Faster Recovery with Convergence Guarantees in Linear Inverse Problems

A Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) with generator $G$ trained to model the prior of images has been shown to perform better than sparsity-based regularizers in ill-posed inverse problems. Here, we propose a new method of deploying a GAN-based prior to solve linear inverse problems using projected gradient descent (PGD). Our method learns a network-based projector for use in the PGD algorithm, eliminating expensive computation of the Jacobian of $G$. Experiments show that our approach provides a speed-up of $60\text{-}80\times$ over earlier GAN-based recovery methods along with better accuracy. Our main theoretical result is that if the measurement matrix is moderately conditioned on the manifold range($G$) and the projector is $δ$-approximate, then the algorithm is guaranteed to reach $O(δ)$ reconstruction error in $O(log(1/δ))$ steps in the low noise regime. Additionally, we propose a fast method to design such measurement matrices for a given $G$. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of this method by requiring $5\text{-}10\times$ fewer measurements than random Gaussian measurement matrices for comparable recovery performance. Because the learning of the GAN and projector is decoupled from the measurement operator, our GAN-based projector and recovery algorithm are applicable without retraining to all linear inverse problems, as confirmed by experiments on compressed sensing, super-resolution, and inpainting.

On the Open Question of The Tracy-Widom Distribution of β-Ensemble With β=6

We determine completely the Tracy-Widom distribution for Dyson's β-ensemble with β=6. The problem of the Tracy-Widom distribution of β-ensemble for general β>0 has been reduced to find out a bounded solution of the Bloemendal-Virág equation with a specified boundary. Rumanov proposed a Lax pair approach to solve the Bloemendal-Virág equation for even integer β. He also specially studied the β=6 case with his approach and found a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) for the logarithmic derivative of the Tracy-Widom distribution for \bea=6. Grava et al. continued to study β=6 and found Rumanov's Lax pair is gauge equivalent to that of Painlevé II in this case. They started with Rumanov's basic idea and came down to two auxiliary functions α(t) and q_2(t), which satisfy a coupled first-order ODE. The open question by Grava et al. asks whether a global smooth solution of the ODE with boundary condition α(\infty)=0 and q_2(\infty)=1 exists. By studying the linear equation that is associated with q_2 and α, we give a positive answer to the open question. Moreover, we find that the solutions of the ODE with α(\infty)=0 and q_2(\infty)=1 are parameterized by c_1 and c_2 . Not all c_1 and c_2 give global smooth solutions. But if (c_1, c_2) \in R_{smooth}, where R_{smooth} is a large region containing (0,0), they do give. We prove the constructed solution is a bounded solution of the Bloemendal-Virág equation with the required boundary condition if and only if (c_1,c_2)=(0,0).

Temporal Bilinear Networks for Video Action Recognition

Temporal modeling in videos is a fundamental yet challenging problem in computer vision. In this paper, we propose a novel Temporal Bilinear (TB) model to capture the temporal pairwise feature interactions between adjacent frames. Compared with some existing temporal methods which are limited in linear transformations, our TB model considers explicit quadratic bilinear transformations in the temporal domain for motion evolution and sequential relation modeling. We further leverage the factorized bilinear model in linear complexity and a bottleneck network design to build our TB blocks, which also constrains the parameters and computation cost. We consider two schemes in terms of the incorporation of TB blocks and the original 2D spatial convolutions, namely wide and deep Temporal Bilinear Networks (TBN). Finally, we perform experiments on several widely adopted datasets including Kinetics, UCF101 and HMDB51. The effectiveness of our TBNs is validated by comprehensive ablation analyses and comparisons with various state-of-the-art methods.

Chiral Superstring and CHY Amplitude

We calculate the chiral string amplitude in pure spinor formalism and take four point amplitude as an example. The method could be easily generalized to $N$ point amplitude by complicated calculations. By doing the usual calculations of string theory first and using a special singular gauge limit, we produce the amplitude with the integral over Dirac $δ$-functions. The Bosonic part of the amplitude matches the CHY amplitude and the Fermionic part gives us the supersymmetric generalization of CHY amplitude. Finally, we also check the dependence on boundary condition for heterotic chiral string amplitudes.

Chaoticons described by nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation

It is shown that the unstable evolutions of the Hermite-Gauss-type stationary solutions for the nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the exponential-decay response function can evolve into chaotic states. This new kind of entities are referred to as chaoticons because they exhibit not only chaotic properties (with positive Lyapunov exponents and spatial decoherence) but also soliton-like properties (with invariant statistic width and interaction of quasi-elastic collisions).

The construction of two-dimensional optimal systems for the invariant solutions

To search for inequivalent group invariant solutions, a general and systematic approach is established to construct two-dimensional optimal systems, which is based on commutator relations, adjoint matrix and the invariants. The details of computing all the invariants for two-dimensional subalgebras is presented and the optimality of twodimensional optimal systems is shown clearly under different values of invariants, with no further proof. Applying the algorithm to (1+1)-dimensional heat equation and (2+1)-dimensional Navier-Stokes (NS) equation, their twodimensional optimal systems are obtained, respectively. For the heat equation, eleven two-parameter elements in the optimal system are found one by one, which are discovered more comprehensive. The two-dimensional optimal system of NS equations is used to generate intrinsically different reduced ordinary differential equations and some interesting explicit solutions are provided.

A direct algorithm of one-dimensional optimal system for the group invariant solutions

A direct and systematic algorithm is proposed to find one-dimensional optimal system for the group invariant solutions, which is attributed to the classification of its corresponding one-dimensional Lie algebra. Since the method is based on different values of all the invariants, the process itself can both guarantee the comprehensiveness and demonstrate the inequivalence of the optimal system, with no further proof. To illustrate our method more clearly , we give a couple of well-known examples: the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the heat equation.

Generalized Darboux transformation and localized waves in coupled Hirota equations

In this paper, we construct a generalized Darboux transformation to the coupled Hirota equations with high-order nonlinear effects like the third dispersion, self-steepening and inelastic Raman scattering terms. As application, an Nth-order localized wave solution on the plane backgrounds with the same spectral parameter is derived through the direct iterative rule. In particular, some semi-rational, multi-parametric localized wave solutions are obtained: (1) Vector generalization of the first- and the second-order rogue wave solution; (2) Interactional solutions between a dark-bright soliton and a rogue wave, two dark-bright solitons and a second-order rogue wave; (3) Interactional solutions between a breather and a rogue wave, two breathers and a second-order rogue wave. The results further reveal the striking dynamic structures of localized waves in complex coupled systems.

Rogue wave solutions in AB system

In this paper, the generalized Darboux transformation is established to the AB system, which mainly describes marginally unstable baroclinic wave packets in geophysical fluids and ultra-short pulses in nonlinear optics. We find a unified formula of Nth-order rogue wave solution for the AB system by the direct iterative rule. In particular, rogue waves possessing several free parameters from first to second order are calculated. The dynamics and some interesting structures of the rogue waves are illustrated through some figures.

A new integrable discrete generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation and its reductions

A new integrable discrete system is constructed and studied, based on the algebraization of the difference operator. The model is named the discrete generalized nonlinear Schrodinger (GNLS) equation for which can be reduced to classical discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. To show the complete integrability of the discrete GNLS equation, the recursion operator, symmetries and conservation quantities are obtained. Furthermore, all of reductions for the discrete GNLS equation are given and the discrete NLS equation is obtained by one of the reductions. At the same time, the recursion operator and symmetries of continuous GNLS equation are successfully recovered by its corresponding discrete ones.
